Those of you that were at Carlisle 2006 know of my Pinto, and saw her there. You also know how she died on the way home 130 miles outside Columbus, Ohio. Well, I sorta left her for dead in the driveway from October 2006 until late 2007. I decided to go to Carlisle this year, so I started to do some serious work to the car.
I was planning on changing the transmission that was slipping on the way to Carlisle 2006, when I noticed the car ws running very flat. I pulled the valve cover to find a badly worn camshaft.
It seemed the further I got into the job the more I found wrong. Original hoses from 1977, bad gaskets, leaking front seals, you name it I had to replace it.
While I had the top end apart I went ahead and painted every part, and carefully put it all back together. It got a rebuilt distributor, all new gaskets, roller cam & lifters, new timing belt, exhaust manifold, and new valve cover. New muffler is coming soon.
That was late December, early January, and I then left the car sit until it was warm enough to work on. The car wsa outside and I couldn't work on the car in the freezing cold.
Today I went ahead and drained the oil, added clean oil, new filter and a bottle of engine flush, when I hears what sounded like knocking when cranking. I am currently going to pull the oil pan to check out the noise. Can't tell too much since the car has no exhaust & I can't hear it. Originally I was going to pull the oil pan to clean out the oil pan after I flushed the engine to get the coolant out of the engine oil after I pulled the head.
That leads me to now. The car is sitting in the driveway with the battery disconnected, with no oil. I also went ahead and did some minor body work to the badly rusted passenger door to get the car looking better. I am going to have to replace the door, but until then I'm just doing some patchwork to it.
I plan on posting some pictures of the car as she sits now, waiting for me to do more work. The Interior is partially apart so I can repaint the dash, and reinstall the steering wheel I have for the car. When it comes down to it I am getting the car ready for Carlisle, and do whatever it takes to get there safely.
Go! Matt Go! Good Luck! and may it all go easy on ya ;D
Thanks. I just hope I don't have to replace the rod & main bearings. If I do I'll not be a happy camper.
This is an auto, right?
Check your flexplate, when they start to give up they sound JUST like a rod going. What happens is, they crack around the mounting flange, then wrinkle. The wrinkles start hitting the block shortly thereafter. Trust me, my Lil' Horse is sitting in the driveway for just that problem, for the second time. >:(
Awesome tip man!!!! +1 for you.
Seriously though, I'll give that a check. What's the best way to check the flexplate with the transmission still in the car?
I should have stated, that yes it is an auto. C3 to be exact.

Pull the starter.
Bill
I shoulda added that you need to pull the starter & peer inside with a flashlight. You can reach the crank with a ratchet & turn the motor while looking.
Gotcha. I'll check that out tomorrow when I have the starter out to drop the oil pan to clean it out.
Then your life just got easier. with the oilpan off you can see nealy a third of the flexplate easily.
Just for S&G with CLEAN hands grab the rods & see if there's any play. Just to rule out the worst case.
Gotcha. Thanks for the tips. Do the rods need to be on any certain stroke, and how much play is acceptable?
I looked at my post & it didn't make much sense to me. What I meant was do the rods need to be at the bottom or top of the crank journals?
If there's any play in the rods, it'll be apparent at any part of the stroke. Grab 'em & give a firm shake.
>:( DAMMIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THAT"S WHAT I WAS AFRAID OF!!!
OK, 'nuff yelling. I pulled the pan, lots of sludge on the bottom from the engine flush, no big deal. What is though is the fact that the rods do have play down there, not much but enough to concern me.
BTW, I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary with the flexplate aside from some ground teeth. When The tranny gets pulled I'll be replacing the flexplate. I just have a bad feeling about it.
As for the rest of the car, the floor is beyond trashed so it's gonna need major floor repair. Gotta figure out how to get a donor pan for it since it's pretty bad. The actual body of the car is is pretty good shape for a 30 year old car. The passenger front fender was replaced cuz it had a dent in it & I had a spare. Both front doors were rotted at the corner. As for the back half of the car, it's suprizingly good. It's got a few places that'll need patched, but overall they are in great shape. Wish I coulda gotten the patch panel for the quarter panel that was on ebay. It went for cheap on there but I had ZERO cash then.
The picture gets grimmer.... I just pulled a main bearing cap since I already knew I was gonna have to drop the crank, and I saw the main bearings are shot. Worn down to the bronze, or brass or whatever it is, I don't care right now.... At the moment I've found I gotta get new rod & main bearings, and am deciding whether or not to pull the head & rering it while the crank is out. s for the flexplate, now I don't know if I will replace it or not. We'll see.
DANG Matt, that sux. Sounds like a rebuild is in order. I wish I were closer, I'd gladly lend a hand with it.
Sorry to hear that Matt. If we were closer I would bring over one of my spare running engines and help you put it in.
Bill
Thanks for your support guys. Fortunately I got the crankshaft from the engine I was rebuilding and it's in great shape. It came out of an engine with only 80k miles so I'll use that one & get some bearings for it. It'll be a pain to do in the car but better to do it now than end up dead on the side of the road.
Ok, NOW I'm intrigued!
How ya gonna get the crank out with the engine in the car?
No, wait, better yet, beg, borrow or steal a camera, & post a how-to!
Teach me young one. ;D

I did that job on my Rabbit GTI racecar, no big deal. I did not have an engine hoist at the time.
Bill
77 Turbo Pinto.
I too would like to know just how this is possible in the Pinto without lifting the engine. There's that dang cross member right in the way! BTW, I have a 1984 Rabbit GTI and it is possible in that and many other Front wheel drive cars. Apples & Oranges ???
Pintosopher
I have replaced the rear main seal on more than one Pinto engine with the engine still in the car. If that can be done I can't see why you could not change out the crankshaft. It would not be the best way, or easy, but I am sure it could be done.
BTW: I never said that the engine did not have to be lifted.
Depending on how the crank looked I would just slide in the bearings.
Bill
It looks to be easy enough, and difficult at the same time. I'm going to pull the transmission anyways, so changing the crank won't be too hard.
I probably shoulda mentioned I'm swapping out the crank since there is some noticeable wear from what I could see on the main cap I took off. I wish I had a micrometer so I could check the journals to make sure they are within specs. Might just go & get one.
Update.....
Today I took out the radiator, removed the timing belt, and the rear timing cover. I am going to wait until after I have the transmission pulled to remove the front seal holder. As long as it doesn't rain I'll be able to get the transmission out of the car.
Aside teardown of the front of the engine I also got some minor body work done to the fender and a couple rust spots on the door. Two spots down, about 20 to go. This is just temporary until I can afford to get a replacement door, and that'll be after Carlisle.
Pics to come soon.
Well, at about 9 pm I was bored so I took the 1977 cars Motor repair book to the garage and checked the specs for the oil pump. It shocked me to see it's in specs by about .003". With that in mind I have the oil pump soaking in cleaner overnight- parts soaking out of the housing that is- so tomorrow I can reassemble the pump and get it all lubed up and ready to reinstall in the engine. Figured while I had it apart to clean the crud out of it after flushing the engine I might as well be safe & check the clearances. The pickup tube will get cleaned out then bolted back on the pump. I tell ya, this car will probably run almost as good as it did when new.
While I've got the cooling system drained I'm gonna remove the valve cover and make sure there's nothing wrong under there. If I have any bad lifters I have some known good lifters ready to be installed.
More to come later.
Ground down quite a bit of the rust on the passender side door, and also finished filling and sanding the RF fender. I just have to do some finish work to the fender so I can get it primed and painted to match the other fender. On the A pillars there is a bulge on the top of each and I'm working to get that fixed. To be honest I can't believe how much I've gotten done on the body. The door may be temporarily fixed since it's rusted through but atleast it'll look better for Carlisle.
Tomorrow if all goes according to plan I'm going to remove the cam from the head so I can clean it up really good to make sure there's no metal shavings.
It just keeps getting worse... As I originally planned I couldn't get the cam pulled form the head yesturday since it rained onn & off all day. I did do a good soaking of the oil pump so I could inspect it better.
Today I finished cleaning the pump and saw more rotten news. While the pumps clearances are within specs there are some grooves worn in the side of the pump housing. At this point I now have to find a pump as I don't want to chance losing the engine over a $20 oil pump. I don't really have the money for a replacement pump but if I put the oil pump back in the engine it will fail with the way my luck has been going.
I took some pictures of the car as she sits and will get them posted soon.
I just pulled apart a 2.3 for the pan and pick-up. It was a running engine with good oil pressure. PM me your address and I will send you the pump for free (I will pay shipping too).
Bill
PM sent.
Got it, will ship Monday.
I still have a good running engine you can have if you can come get it.
Bill
I wish I could, but my dad's taurus wagon won't make it too well, if at all. It barely gets him to work so if I get the Pinto running he can drive it while I work on the Taurus. Thanks again, you're a stand up guy Bill.
Finally, I got some pics of the work that I've got done to the car so far. It's the shots of the bodywork I've gotten done so far.
RR quarter panel scratch filled & fixed.

That's all for now, more to come later
Another update. It's been raining so I'm unable to work on the engine or busy, so I've been working on intierior pieces. The maplight setup I have had a broken mounting screw hole so I'm in the process of fixing it. Previously I used plastic epoxy but it didn't hold, so I decided to retry it with gobs of JB weld. Also this time I've secured the broken piece to the light with a clamp.
Also I had the typical broken sunvisor peg, and used JB weld on it to secure the peg to the visor. I'm gonna start reassembling the interior in the next couple days as well as restitching a torn part of the headliner. Pics to come soon.
Got some more pics of the parts I worked on while it's raining. Including the visor reglue. The top visor in the pic has the JB welded pin. You can see where I had to use JB weld on the map light. If it doesn't stay glued this time then I will keep an eye out for a replacement. I repainted the grille while I had it off & posted a pic of it. Lastly, the sport mirrors I bought long, long ago when I had my 78 hatchback. Black is a neutral color so I went ahead and painted them gloss black so they won't look as bad.
I tested the light repair I made & it's holding perfectly. JB WELD IS AWESOME!!!!
Today I got the oil pump in the mail. Thanks Bill!!! Anyways, looked at the pump and noticed it seemed somewhat different from the original 1977 Ford oil pump when Isaw the tag with a part number. That pump is a Melling oil pump, and looks reasonably new. It must have been replaced at one time in the engine Bill got it out of.
I got the car pulled up the driveway with the help of a 94 Taurus and a piece of chain. My dad's Taurus may be falling apart and near death but the engine & transaxle still have some guts to them. Without even giving the car gas she pulled the Pinto up the driveway with minimal damage to her plastic bumper.
With that I can go ahead and install the brake clips, thanks to Tigger for sending them a while back, and also bleed the brakes to make sure all is good.
Well, I got the driver side brake hose replaced, as well as the anti rattle springs installed. Thanks again Gerhard. When I removed the master cylinder lid I noticed the front part of the reservoir was almost empty. I'm going to check the rear brakes since I think there's a possible leak. I've checked the other front hose & it's ok, from what I can tell. It's as old as the driver side was so I'm thinking I might replace it just to be safe. The rear hose is cracking so that will get changed.
More to come on this pain in the neck project.
Matt, where are you located?
I'm in Dayton, with some spare parts (2.3 short block, etc).
I'm in Reynoldsburg, Oh.
Cool. Well, let me know if you need any parts off mine.
My crank is probably original, but she ran when I pulled her...
Have you gotten the floor pan issue(s) resolved? The Rust Monster took everything between the firewall and the seat mounts on the driver's side. :( I'm probably going to make my own out of 18ga steel sheet.
Cool. Thanks for the offer. I have a crank out of an 80 2.3 I was rebuilding for the Pinto and the crank is in great shape so I'm gonna use that.
Nah, haven't gotten the floors tane care of yet. Mine are very bad. The driver side had been patched by the old owners by screwed in street sign, but I want a good fix that will hold. The passenger side is starting to look like swiss cheese so I gotta take care of that also. The underside is very rusty on the car, but the body is in decent shape. The rockers are solid, and very little of the rear quarters are rusted out. I plan on patching the rear quarters by welding in new metal. Right now I'd be happy if the car had brakes. The reservoir for the rear brakes was almost completely dry so I gotta track down the problem there.
No problem... If you want, I'm looking at shaping my driver's side, running a few bead rolls and welding it in. I could do two and leave some extra metal on the sides so it'd be a "cut to fit"... I could mirror that on the passenger side easily enough. I'm not sure if I need to do mine, yet. Too many parts over on that side.
If I was off on weekends, I'd offer to come out and lend a hand.
>:(
It just got worse folks....
I went to remove the rf brake hose & the line broke. New line up front needed. I jacked up the rear & found the leak. crumbling LR metal line. Saw the rear hose & it's about ready to go. It gets better folks... I was carefully rolling the car down the driveway & missed the block for the front wheel so the car rolled into the garage and hit my rolling workbench. No harm there. I got the taurus to pull it up the driveway & forgot to close the driver door. It caught on the grass & bent it backwards. You guesed it, the door won't cloe right now and is dented up bigtime. I now need a new door & possibly a new lower hinge. The upper was the wrong one and I have a replacement upper in the garage. I pulled the driveshaft and the front u joint is quite free, compared to the rear u joint I replaced in 2006.
At this point, the car might not get to carlisle as now I gotta check my funds..
Oh yeah, when I got the door able to close I started to pull it back up the driveway, hit the gas a little hard and ripped off the bumper on my dad's car. I now gotta get a replacement for the taurus.
What a friggin day!!!! >:(
OMG! what a day...
I don't know what to say other than sorry all that happened.
Thanks. I'm getting a bumper right after work tomorrow so my dad's car will be fixed. I got a post for a replacement door, although I'm going to see if I can fix the old one so it'll atleast close. It drops about 2 inches so I'm not holding my breath there. As my dad told me, it's better to find the bad brake lines now then when they go while driving, which they would have.
As for the ujoint, It's only a couple bucks so I'll get a replacement for it.
Well, I looked at the door yesturday to check it out & see what I can do, and confirmed the door is too badly dented to fix. The lower hinge is trashed so I gotta replace it, and the upper one is also bent. I have a hinge for the top in the garage & Tigger is checking for a good hinge that he's gonna sell me. As for the door, for now it's gonna get sanded, filled & painted so it doesn't look as bad as it does right now with the dent & chipped paint. I don't expect it to look much better but it has to look better than it does right now.
I'm still trying to find a door for the car before Carlisle but if I don't find one atleast the one on the car should be able to open & close alright without dropping any.
Well, today after I got the bumper on my Dad's car I was all wound up & ready to go so I worked some on the Pinto. I was trying to decide whether or not to paint the engine compartment for Carlisle, so I started to paint it gloss black. It's not going to be a perfect job, as it's mainly to make the engine compartment a uniform color, as well as hide some of the rust. It's looking good so far. I got one coat on the passenger side, and ran out of gloss black, so I've got to get more. It's going well so far, and I figured while I had the battery out of the way I might as well do it.
As for the engine, I found another problem that was missed when I replaced the camshaft & rockers. I got the lifters from the Ranger I got the roller rockers out of and installed them, and shortly after I started to hear the noise. Turns out, alside from having worn rod & main bearings and a bad oil pump I also had ONE lifter that I could compress. I am thinking it was making some of the noise I was hearing, as well as the bad bearings at the bottom of the engine. I'm ok with that since I kept a set of lifters I previously bought with the cam. The cam & lifters came out of a 92 Ranger, but I had to get different Rockers for it.
Anyways, I'm going to clean up the lifters from the 92 Ranger and install them since there was one bad one from the 84 Ranger.
Got some body work done to the car. Once I get the pics off the cam I'll post them. The hood was never properly sanded when I threw a coat of paint on it so I sanded it to take care of the cracking original paint. It looks & feels so much better, but now I gotta fill the little nicks & dents that are there. I also got some work to both doors. The passenger door is about 3/4 done & the driver door is just about filled where I dented it. It won't be perfect, but it'll look better than it did after I messed it up. I also sanded the cowl in the corners. I think the previous owners had the hood open up while driving since there is one small dent on both sides of the cowl pan, which match up perfectly with the corners of the hood. It's not the hood on the car now. The original one was rusting badly on the underside so I replaced it. I plan on repairing the windshield seal tomorrow after work and sanding some of the bondo on the driver door and spot filler on the hood.

If that is Glaze your using on the hood make sure it dries althe way threw before finishing it..it tends to hold moisture a long time and shrink back.

Thanks for the tip. You learn something new everyday. I plan on working on sanding ot probably tomorrow since I gotta get the house ready for an appraisal. I did notice a little what you're saying, on spots I worked on before, unfortunately I wasted a lot of time since I didn't know what was causing it.
Now I know for later. Hopefully tomorrow I'll have the replacement lifters installed, rockers back in & the valve cover reinstalled. If all goes according to plan I'll be dropping the transmission this weekend at the latest, and then I can change the bad bearings and crankshaft.

I tell ya, you're the man with that tip. Sure enough out of all the spots I filled the dent I filled did shrink back a little bit. I finished it off today with some bondo and will sand it tomorrow.
As for the rest of the work I did today, I sanded the driver door where the dent is and got another coat of bondo over it. The door is gonna have lots of bondo in one spot of the door, but it'll look better than the dent did. I also got the lifters & rockers back in the head, as well as the valve cover back on. Tomorrow if all goes according to plan I'll be doing more sanding to the door to get the shape back. I hope to have a coat of primer over the hood, and be ready for painting. The rf fender is just about ready, as I have some minor sanding to do to it before I prime it. I'm also going to fill in the cracks on the windshield seal to make sure it doesn't leak. A new seal will be coming sometime in the summer when I can afford it, hopefully anyways.
Pics of the work to come soon.
Well, one of the rusty areas on my car is at the back, located at the trunk seal. I gotta replace the rusty metal with new metal welded in, but in the mean time I had some galvanised aluminum that I cut to shape, rivited into place, and sealed up with some indshield sealant. This is only temporary, but looks better, and hopefully will keep out the rain from the trunk.
I've been so busy lately that I haven't done much to her lately. That combined with crappy weather, and school I haven't been able to work on her much. Today I rolled the car back up the driveway with help from my Dad, and started working on fixing the brakes. I looked at the rear brake line that went from the proportioning valve to the back of the car, and there was no good section of line to cut, flare & connect a new piece. When I noticed that I went ahead and unbolted the whole brake line from the car. That's one less rusty thing on the car now. Tomorrow I'm going to get the line needed for the rear, as well as the small part of the front brakes. I hope to be able to bleed the brakes on tomorrow, the end of the week at the latest.
I also went ahead and drained the tranny in the car and noticed there was only 2 quarts in the pan. The transmission lines have been unbolted from the tranny and one was constantly dripping into the bowl I had underneath it, so that might be where some of the fluid went. Either way, the output shaft has so much play in it there's no way I can use it.
I hope to have the tranny pulled and the engine work done by the end of the week. It's gonna be close at this point whether or not the car will go to Carlisle or not, but I'm gonna try.
IT HAS BRAKES!!!!!! For the first time since god knows when I don't have to pump the pedal to get the car to stop. When I got the car I bled the crap out of the brakes and the pedal was better, but never perfect. I thought it was just that they were manual brakes but was wrong.
Anyways today I installed the brake line from front to back, and also the small section on the rf wheel, bled the brakes, then had the most solid pedal the car has had in the three years I have owned the car. I ordered a brake hose for the back, since the old one is badly deteriorated, being from 1977. After that there is no part of the brakes that is original.
Unfortunately I did find the underside is in MUCH worse shape than I thought. It needs a heckuva lot of work, as well as some brackets replaced that are badly rusted. At this point I have done so much to the car I am going to whatever I can to save this car. The body is in decent shape, and the interior is in good shape as well.
Last but not least, I did finish painting the front of the car, and will be doing some final sanding to the doors, then they will be the same color as the front end. I also painted the engine compartment & underside of the hood gloss black.
Pics to come soon.
Yesturday I got the doors painted in silver & they look ok. It's not perfect since the doors are junk to begin with but they look better than they did. The vinyl paint was chipping off the rear seat so I repainted it where it was chipping. The console was faded where I didn't properly paint it 2 years ago, so that was redone. The console did not have a panel underneath the emergency brake, so I fabricated one, using a broken plastic container, and some woodgrain contact paper. It's not a perfect color match to the factory woodgrain color, but it looks nicer than having no panel there. To complete the console I installed an ashtray in the back that I bought at Carlisle 2006.
Next to do is to finish assembling the interior, and touching up any interior parts that need it. Rain is in the forcast today so I doubt I will be doing any tranny work to the car, but we'll see. I am also thinking of going ahead and painting the back half of the car to match the front half so it looks better.
I'll get some pics taken today & will get them posted soon.
It's taken me a while, but here are the pics of the work I've done lately to her.

That's all for now folks... I'm working on painting the inside of the trunk black, and will get some pics of the engine compartment that I already painted.
I am going to be painting the rest of the car to match the front of the car. I am going to be painting the car red eventually, but in the mean time atleast the car will all match for the first time in a long time.
She's coming along very nicely! I especially like the MII center console. 8)
Thanks. The insert underneath the ebrake had to be fabricated since it was missing, but I can't tell much difference between that & the actual piece. The console isn't bolted down yet, but will be soon.
looks like a lot of work but isnt it worth it? i think so. nice job man. oh and i have the mustang II center console as well i love that thing .
You are right on the money. It's been a lot of work to do but is definitely worth it, especially when I look out the front door & see her looking the way she is. Dad & I talked about it & he & I think the car will look even better painted all one color, so by the end of the week the car will be all silver. It's not going to be a perfect job, just rattlecanned with duplicolor silver truck paint, but it will definitely look better than it does now.
As for the console, yeah, it is great. One mod I did to the console is I got an adjustable cupholder from Advance Auto Parts and screwed it to the bottom of the console under the lid. Works great and isn't seen.
The body is just about done, the mechanicals are near complete, all that is left is the suspension and the floor & such under the car.

so in 2006 it was the PCCA "Most Potential" award winner
this year the "Shiney Award!!" 8)
git-r-done, not much time left...
Go! Matt! Go! Matt! Go! Matt! Go!
keep up the good work ;D
Thanks. Yeah, "Most potential" in 2006, and that award is sitting next to the "Booster's Choice" trophy I got from a car show a couple months later. I have been counting down the days, and at this point I'll have the car running in just enough time to take her for a quick spin, and make sure nothing is gonna fall off.
This time the car has to make the complete trip to redeem herself. I might even make a stop at the gast station that the car died at in 2006.
Got the car's back half primered so there is no original color showing. Tomorrow I get paid so I'm gonna buy the silver paint to paint the back half to match the front half. Saturday & Sunday will be spent pulling the tranny, fixing the bottom end & installing the new tranny.
I also got the shift selector shaft seal in the mail today & it looks great. Really finished off the shifter nicely.
Hey Matt!
After following your recent progress, I can't wait to meet you and see Harold II up close and in person! Can't bring my Pinto this time, but am planning to make a day trip to Carlisle next Saturday. Hoping to meet all the PCCA guys and the Lincoln guys I converse with regularly online... kind of put faces with the names. See you there!
Dwayne
Looking forward to meeting you, as well as anyone else that goes to Carlisle this year. I got the car's back end painted silver to match the rest of the car. It doesn't look perfect but is better than nothing. The tranny is just about out of the car. All I have left is to remove the bolts to the rear transmission mount then the transmission will be out of the car. I had to take a break since it's wuite warm out & I have not drank much water today.
Got the tranny out of the carand it turned out to be quite easy to be honest. I removed the flexplate since I'm going to be replacing the crankshaft & bearings & found out the ring gear teeth on the flexplate are more worn than I originally thought. I have a replacement on order, but it won't be in until tuesday. Since I have school on Tuesday that gives me wednesday & thrusday to get the transmission back in the car.
I got the crankshaft & bearings swapped out today as well as the oil pump installed. It rotates nice & freely, and now I'm getting the rest of the engine reinstalled. I'm waiting for the flexplate to arrive then I can get the rest of the work done. If all goes according to plan the car will run wednesday night. If not then I WILL have her ready for Carlisle Thursday night. The only thing that will keep the car from Carlisle is another problem, but hopefully I'm done finding problems with the car.
Man, you're flying on that rebuild.
You should stop by and get mine done.
I bet two weekends you could have it up and running. ;D
Lol.. Yeah, I am but it's not because I want to. I am trying to get Harrold II back to Carlisle for the first time since 2006. The trip wasn't technically completed since the car died on the way home and I want to get the car done so I she can redeem herself. The flexplate arrived today, and had a rear brakehose rushed so I could get it installed before Carlisle. It arrived today after having it overnighted. The original one I ordered April 20 through another website was apparently out of stock and I found out when the money reappeared in the account. Not happy that I had to pay $40 to have the hose overnighted but I couldn't chance it.
The car is far from done being restored as the underside is a major disaster area. She needs a lot of work under there. It has more rust under there than my 85 Omni turbo did. I might just have to help you with your car. lol
It's been a while since I posted on my car, but that is because it didn't make it to Carlisle last year. I had one problem after the other so I couldn't get it done. The last nail in the coffin was the pilot bushing stuck in the crankshaft.
Well, I have started to work on her again this year, with a little hope of going to Carlisle. The little hope is VERY LITTLE at this point but we'll see.
Anyways, I am in the process of replacing the driver door hinges since they got mangled last year, when disaster struck again.. I couldn't get the door lined up. No problem, I figure I'm going to have to remove the fender for easier access. Well, I got it off then found out the bolts on the door were not wanting to thread, so I took the hinges & door back off the car. I got the threads fixed & pushed the door on the striker bolt and tried to line up the bolts. Well, the adjustable plate the bolts go into fell down into the side panel. I am now trying to figure out how to get it back up there without removing the door. I went ahead and put the lower hinge on & got the door on the car since it is going to rain, but I have to fix that one problem tomorrow after work. I hope I don't have to remove the dash to get the plate back in but if I do then I do.
Hmm, perhaps you can gain access to a high power magnet to put against that panel and "guide" the plate back to where you need it. Would need to be a mighty powerful magnet though, as the panel between the magnet and the plate that fell is metal itself. :\
Well, I had a wire run to pull it back up, but ran into a small problem. I couldn't get the part to stay in place. Whatever holds that piece in place was getting in the way, so I couldn't position the place. That's why I think I might just have to remove the dash.
Hmm. I wonder what DOES hold that in place. I'm guessing it is just a little shelf that it sits on that is folded on the other side, cradling the metal piece.
Something like that. I removed the bottom one to see what was causing my problem and that's what it basically was. A bent over piece of metal to hold it so you can adjust the hinge. The bottom one is easily gotten to but not the top one so much.
Funny thing, is the problems today started to occur after I decided that I was going to get the car ready to go to Carlisle this year. I am really starting to think the car does not want to go to Pennsylvania, let alone Carlisle.
Don't give up on it Matt. You can do it. Just take one thing at a time.
I know Gerhard.. It's just frustrating. I try to fix one thing for something else to go wrong. I so hope I don't need to pull the dash. I hear it is virtually impossible

That is what seemed to happen to me with the Ghost!! If it wasn't one thing, then it was another, but not to that extreme!
If I am correct in my assumption, you will need to pull the windshield to get to top dash bolts/screws. The shield was already broken out of the parts pinto I stripped so I can't say for sure if it needs to be pulled, but I think it does?? Other then that, the rest was fairly easy. I did it myself with out hubby being around to help me.
If you do have to pull the windshield, I would defenitly buy a new rubber, and just cut the old one to get the shield out!!!! I broke my shield when I tried to pull it back out when I still had a leak. Course, I think the new rubber runs about 89 bucks, and a new shield cost me 100! LOL Not much of a difference! LOL I did lose my original shield though, but then again, I got rid of the scratches from the PO not having good wiperblades!! LOL
Good luck, and I hope you can get that part with maybe a combo of string and magnet!!!!
Not really too impossible, it's just A LOT of work. I pulled the dash from a 77 Bobcat at the junkyard to keep as a spare. The windshield had to be removed for access to the screws along the firewall at the base of the windshield. Then I dropped the steering column, removed the glove box insert, radio bezel, switches, gauges, vents and ducts, heater control panel, wiring harness clips, fuse panel, dash struts on each side, then removed the rest of the mounting hardware for the dash.
It took about 45 minutes to do, but I really didn't give any concern to the well being of the other parts that I didn't want. I will admit though, I did cut the harness in some places.
Great. That is not what I needed to hear. I might be having to replace the windshield rubber and headliner sooner than I wanted to. Both need done but I don't want to do it now. If I gotta do that I might just go ahead and get her running & driving and see if I can borrow part of the garage of a guy my Dad works with.

Back in high school I was where you were at with my 67 Mustang. I was in a wreck that took out the majority of the perfect original parts of the car. Next week my parents started their divorce. I decided to focus on the car to keep my mind off my parents divorce. The car however, decided to fall apart. I would take one step forward and the next day the car would take me 3 steps back. I was so frustrated after the third or fourth time that I almost sold it out of frustration. Eventually the car started comply and things turned around. I am so glad I didn't sell the car. I have since gone thru this with a couple other cars. A couple years ago, I spent what felt like a year under our explorer, trying to keep in on the road. It seemed like every month I was doing a major repair on it. Lately my crusing wagon has been nickel and diming me but I am slowing fixing all the little qwerks. Unfortunately I think this is the nature of our hobby. We are going to get into these ruts from time to time. We just need to stick to it and fix one thing at a time. Eventually you will get over the hump and be able to enjoy your car. At that point you will be motivated to finish her.
Well,
today I planned on getting quite a bit done to my car. Fix the door hinge, pull the front of the engine & crank off. Knock out the pilot bushing, get the crank back in & also install the flexplate.
Well, nothing went to plan. I spent all day messing with the stupid door hinges. I bought two kits that both went to the upper hinge after I messed up the first pin on a bent hinge. Tomorrow I hope to get another hinge pin kit so I can rebuild the bottom hinge Gerhard sold me last year. Then I can get the door to close properly & get to work on the bottom end of the engine. Hopefully I can get all that done tomorrow.
Got the lower door hinge replaced and the door opens & closes perfectly. I am happy about that. Now I am going to get the front of the engine taken back apart so I can get the crank pulled back out of the engine.
I got the front of the engine torn back apart. After I take a break I'm gonna get the car up the driveway & pull the crank so I can get the pilot bushing out of the end. While it's out I'm gonna rechange the rear main seal just to make sure it's good.
Things are really turning around for this car.
The only way from losing your mind on these long term projects is to just take it one job at a time. You have already proven that you can do it. is it furstrating??? oh hell yes and i like the part where you feel you have been working on a part for a year and it still needs work. have faith as all of a sudden you will see positive results. when you finish this car you are going to be proud of the car and yourself for seeing it through.
jim
The car might not last much longer. If it could go wrong after the door it did. I am one step away from saying the hell with the car and calling a tow truck to have the piece of junk towed away >:( At one point I got mad enough that I threw my jack handle into the garage & it bounced off the radiator. I now need a new radiator. Got the crank out of the engine to find that the pilot bearing race is stuck in the end of the crankshaft. I have about had it with this car & if I quit I will junk it & never mess with another pinto again.
Well, I am now a bit calmer & in the process of tracking down a radiator for the car. Tomorrow I plan on calling around to see where I can take the crankshaft to so I can get the pilot bushing, or what is left of it out of the crank. If I can't get it out I will have to get another crank. This one had only 80k miles on it so I'll end up looking for another low milage crank or just breaking down & buying a remanned crank.
I've been there too! I had a hell of a time pulling the pilot bearing when I put the motor in my CW. I tried everything but the correct tool to get that stupid thing out. I finally took a sharp cold chissel to it and a couple hours later it was out. Needless to say I was not happy as it was about 20 degree's outside and that task took the majority of the day. Before I replaced the clutch in my 79 wagon, I went to harbor freight and bought their pilot bearing tool. 3 minutes and the bearing was out. It was the best $30 I spent that year! Try the cold chissel and see if that will loosen it. You can do it Matt!
I'm thinking I might give it another go today after I get off work. Worse case I'll have to pay to get what is left out.
One thing I am trying is letting it soak in blaster for a few hours. I went ahead and filled the end up with the stuff and am letting it soak while I am working today. It couldn't hurt.
Well, the project has taken yet another turn. Instead of all black interior with an unknown exterior color I have decided to go with a blue exterior & a combo blue and black interior.
My reasoning for this is because my seats are junk & can't find any I like in black. I also have blue door panels for the car already that I was going to paint black but will now stay blue. The Tempos & Topaz's have a nice comfortable seat so I am going to go with that. I hope to get a power seat from a Topaz as those are really nice. Pretty much the seats, rear side panels, door panels, arm rests, headliner, and carpet will be blue, and the console, dashboard, and rear deck will be black. I got the image in my mind and I like what I see. It will be unique and at the same time I won't have to worry about finding black seats.
Yes...been there, done that, on the seat thing. Good luck, you'll find just the right ones, I'm sure.
Larry :police:
Well, the remaing part of the pilot bearing seems froze in the end of the crankshaft. The cage & needle bearings are long gone, but the race is still stuck in there. I might have to take the crank to a machine shop to have them take care of it, or have the old crank turned since it was grooved.
More to come soon
I GOT THE RACE OUT!!! After soaking & soaking the pilot bearing race in PB Blaster I was able to keep chiseling until it came loose. I got it out in two pieces but it came out in about 15 minutes after I drained the blaster out of the end of the crankshaft. Blaster... The miracle cure for what is frozen.
If all goes according to plan I will be reinstalling the bottom end and get this thing back on to the road to recovery.
NExt step, tranny install.
I didn't know that Peanut Butter (PB) would do that?!!!!!! (http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m247/myhrdly/laughing6-hehe.gif)
Seriously though, I am glad to hear things are starting to work out, or come out!!! :)
You will be on the road before you know it!!!! ;D
Yeah, I think you're right Kim. Now I just need to get a radiator to replace the one I broke when I threw the jack handle after getting mad at the car this weekend.
Who knows.. Maybe some day she will be in good enough shape to make the trip out west lol. I doubt it but you never know
Another update.. Since I originally replaced my driver door back in 2006 I have noticed it closes in way too much & didn't line up. Today I adjusted the striker bolt out & it now lines up perfectly. The only drawback is there is a nice size gap from the squished weather stripping so I gotta figure something out until I can get the new doors on the car. The door also rattles a bit now, but I am thinking it could be from the striker bolt bushing missing & the worn weather stripping. Next step is to get both those issues resolved.
keep up the good progress matt. The help section of the parts store sells the striker bolt for about $6.00. I replaced both of mine it took the rattel out but i still need to replace the weather striping, to get rid of the whistles while driving
phil
Thanks Phil,
I actually saw the striker bolt you are talking about, retailing at $9 but there just isn't the cash right now. The tape is a temporary measure until I can get the right part to fix it lol.
One thing I have been working on the past couple days are a set of deluxe door panels I bnought off eBay quite quite a while ago. The chrome stripping was all peeling off really bad so I went ahead and used silver model paint to recoat them. I am very, very happy how that turned out. I do need to do some regluing of the part that folds over the edge & repair a couple tears in the vinyl before they go on the car but overall I am happy of the condition. I only paid $20 when I got them, so I knew they weren't going to be perfect.
Haven't really done anything to Harold II lately, but that will change tomorrow.
I made $20 by fixing my brother's brakes so I went out & bought the rear main seal & gasket sealer needed for me to reinstall the crankshaft. The rear main seal was not leaking but while I have the crankshaft and tranny out of the car I figure now is the best time to get to it as a preventative measure.
When I get off work I am going to get the car up the driveway and take care of the bottom end. I can then reinstall the crank, timing belt & get ready to install the transmission. If all goes well the car will start & go up & down the driveway on her own. I can't drive it much since there is no exhaust or good radiator, thanks to the jack handle sized hole in it.
I just lucked out.. As I previously mentioned I bought a rear main seal to install while I had the crank out of the car & it turns out it's a good thing I did. The old one has some of the rubber cut on it & more than likely would have started to leak. Better to replace it now then with the crank in the car. That is no fun there.
One step closer to running for the first time in almost three years!!! I got the crankshaft back in, oil pump bolted up and the new flexplate installed. Tomorrow I will be torquing the flexplate bolts to specs, as well as installing the oil pan, crank seal holder, timing belt and accessories. Depending on how things go I plan on shortening the spark plug wires & getting them reinstalled on the engine as well. If all goes according to plan the transmission will be back in the car very, very soon.
Woohhhhooooo!!! You are coming right along!!! Congrats!! Sounds like you will be on the road in no time!! ;D
Thanks Kim,
I sure hope so anyways. After installing the transmission I still need a u-joint to install the driveshaft but I plan on getting that relatively shortly.. My brother just came back from a trip to California. Had I thought of it I woulda told him to go Pinto Parts hunting lmao. There just aren't any parts cars near here, thus the long list I sent ya lol.
Update...
I got the front of the engine back together today. Since the car sat for a while I pulled the plugs & squirted some oil in the cylinders then got the front crank seal, pulleys & timing belt put on. I went ahead & set the radiator back in the car, even though it is junk. Atleast it is out of the garage though.
Next is to reinstall the oil pan & for the first time in almost a year, the transmission. More to come soon.
After getting a little lazy for the day I got a boost of energy so I went outside to do some cleaning & reassembling of my interior. I got the trash out of the car, as well as reinstalled the instrument cluster. She is looking really good inside, even though she has sat for a couple years. I also got the wheel covers back on the car, since they were sitting for the past year. Got the trunk lock installed & mopped up the water that was in the trunk. The seal is shot beyond belief so I gotta do something to fix it. I'll prolly do Dave's foam weatherstripping repair since they don't seem to make a trunk seal for the car.
Lastly I found a couple holes in the body behind the door where the antenna and mirror grommet goes through and put tape over them. I will be putting the antenna and mirror on the car but until I do I want to keep the holes covered so wasps or other bees don't try to make a nest in the car. If that were to happen I would have to junk the car and that would be bad. I plan on reassembling the replacement carb and get it ready to install. That will come after the gas tank has been dropped and flushed. I don't need a repeat of June 2006 on the way home from Carlisle.
more to come tomorrow after I get off work, weather permitting.
keep up the good progress matt
Thanks Phil. I plan on going to Harbor Freight tomorrow to pick up a hole saw kit so I can get the holes drilled for the mirror cable to go through. Then I can get the duct tape off the holes. Going to also go ahead & reinstall the antenna for the same reason. No radio in the car for now but atleast that will be taken care of. One step closer to completion. I do have some old door panels in the garage so I'm gonna go ahead & install them for the Ohio show in July. I don't want to risk destroying the deluxe door panels I got to install on the new doors I got last year. Before I install the doors I bought from Phil I'm going to strip them to the bare metal & fix any dings that are in them. The door panels I bought off eBay will be going on those panels.
Well, here's what I got done today. It might not seem like much but it's better than nothing.
After I got off work I got one of those xmas tree shaped bits.. You know the ones that can drill different size holes & also deburr... Anyways, I went to Harbor freight and bought one and enlarged the hole I already drilled for the passenger side mirror cable to go through. I then mounted the mirror & ran the cable in the car. That miror has been in my garage since my first Pinto in 2004 & aside from a dirty mirror glass it works great!. You would never know the car never had it.
Next I finished installing the cable for the driver side mirror. That one I used that same bit inside to drill the hole for the cable to fir through. It turned out great as well. I got ambitious. I retaped the trunk seal so it doesn't flap all over, reinstalled the antenna, and most importantly... I washed the car for the first time in almost three years!!!
Wow.. The car shined up. While I had the hose off I looked for the water leak at the front. Couldn't find it. The big difference between when it leaked water in the car & now is that the antenna is in place. I saw a small pin hole that lead to the wheel well. In order to fix it I will have to pull the heater box & dash so that will come at a later date. I will seal it somehow in the mean time. I also found the trunk leaks BADLY!!! I gotta get a new seal for it but in the mean time I will figure something out.
PICS!!!!

Thanks for looking :)
Today after work I took my 04 Paliby Maxx to get the tires rebalanced and while they were doing that I walked to the Lowes behind it to get some weatherstripping. I did what Dave did to his but instead of 1/2" and 5/16" I got three rolls of 1/4" weatherstripping. Same result, just different size. I noticed the Autokrafters catalog has the trunk weatherstripping for Pintos, so when I weld in new metal to replace the rusty parts I'm going to buy the actual seal for the car.
I also went ahead & went a little farther on the interior of my car. In the garage I had some door panels I previously bought off here & put them on the car. They are not the ones I want on the car but since the doors leak these work fine. Now, before you get in an uproar these are already junk. The backs are horrible & the vinyl is junk. I just wanted something on there so I won't have to look at the ugly inside of the doors when driving the car. Once I get the new doors on with new door seals then my good door panels will go on the car. They don't look great on there but from a distance they don't look too bad. I will try to clean them up some but don't know how well they will come out.
I got some pics of the door panels on my car. They don't look too horrible in the pics but to be honest the door panels don't do the pics justice.

>:( The damn trunk still leaks!! It is raining pretty good so I went outside & opened the trunk. The trunk floor is wet. What I've got to do is remove the back seat and while someone is watering the deck lid I will be inside the trunk with a flashlight. If the trunk were bigger I would just close the lid while in there but since the trunk is tiny that won't work lol.
I also found the water leak at the front of the car is back so I gotta pull the glove box so I can see where it's coming from. I am sure it's from the corner seam but not positive.
More to come later.
Don't overlook the rear window gasket! I had a leak in the driver side corner of my rear window gasket. Squished some silicon windshield sealant in there and it's stopped for now.
The only thing separating the cabin from the trunk is the seat, and that's just upholstery on fiberboard...
I'll check it out. I don't think that's where it is since the leak is more towards the back but it doesn't hurt to take a look.
Another thing I just thought of to check would be the tail light seals. They use a foam type gasket that tends to leak after time. I replaced mine with a cheap foam fender mat, cut it up into the shapes I needed and double layered them.
hmmm I'll give those a check
matt, I have a site you can check out for your color samples
http://www.tcpglobal.com/autocolorlibrary/cgi-bin/search/search.pl
phil
Thansk Phil! I'll give that site a look :D
I was gonna install the tranny today but instead I cleaned up the garage & rebuilt my replacement carb. It's not going to be bolted on just yet because I still have to drop the tank and clean it out so I dont plug up the replacement carb. I hope to install the tranny tomorrow but we'll see.
Well, I was removing the rear seat so I could locate the source of the trnk leak & found a very bad problem.. See the pic below
(http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y36/mmanter/Pinto/P1020438.jpg)
I know it's a 32 year old car but this is not good. If I'm gonna save her I need some major welding
The driver side rear just needs some minor fixing with a couple minor spots but this is very bad for the passenger side rear, especially since the whole front floor is shot. On the upside the transmission tunnel looks brand new.I got some major deciding now. Do I try to find a good shell nearby or do I fix what I got.. I can figure a way to pull the engine & it's got no tranny. I have yet to install the 8" rear.. Oh man.. what to do :-\
I feel your pain!!
I wish my pasenger front floor looked that good :(
With this car lately it's been one step forward and about 50 steps back. I love this car more than the 78 I used to own. It prolly shows by all the work I have done to her lately. I do not want to let her go but I might have to :'(
It's getting really grim for Harold II. It might be the end for her. :'( :'(
What I have decided is more than likely gut the interior, and take a close look at what I got to work with. I am pretty sure it's worse looking than the back but only time will tell what I find.
As Snowman said in Smokey and the Bandit, "oh whoa whoa, Come on now, You've come this far, If we do a job we finish the job". I know it's easy for me to say "don't stop now" but you HAVE come this far. Take a few days off from the car. Have a beer, then with a cleared mind make your decision. Bandit has beat me up a few times and I almost quit. I came to realize Bandit can't die, I must restore her heart and sole. This week her engine went bye bye, found more rust, broke a major part for the full glass hatch. I have made a promise to have Bandit at the 2011 Carlisle. So to end my rant, it's up to you, I hope you keep Harold II alive even if it's thru another car with parts from him.
Carolina Boy
aka Robert
Yeah, I know what you are saying. Actually after I found more rust on the driver side I went out & picked me up a 24 oz Bud Ice. It wasn't the best beer I coulda had but all I could afford. It atleast did the job for me though.. I figure I'll patch the rear floor with the help of a friend my Dad works with. That is more severe than the front floor. Eventually I will get to the front floor. Atleast I have the front of an old washer in the garage for that very puropse. I also have the old left front fender I will cut up & use for grafting new metal.
There you go, I like Fosters myself. You have gave me some added "omph" to get back to work on mine. I'll meet you at Carlisle in 2011, I'll have the Pinto!
matt, i have a compleat floor pass side from project kat that i do not need pm me and see if we can work something out
phil
PM sent phil Thanks.
Well,
after taking the night to rest while drinking a beer I figured out what I am gonna do about the cancer. As a temporary fix to keep the rodents out of the car I am gonna pop rivet some sheet metal over the holes. When my dad finally follows through with the welder he promised me last Christmas I am going to weld in new sheet metal on the floor. A guy he works with knows how to weld so I'm gonna see if he will show me how. This car means alot to me since it is a newer model of my mom's first car and also named after her car. Hers was a 71 Pinto sedan named Harold, thus my sedan named Harold II. I'll keep you all posted on what happens here. One thing.. I am unsure what attracted more rust. The 1985 Dodge Omni GLH Turbo or this car. Either way they both were rust magnets ;D. I don't miss that car since I bought a clean silver version of her to replace her. I REFUSE to do the same thing to Harold II!
Yet, another update....
It started raining so I went ahead & got a flashlight to check into the trunk leak. Dave, you are right. The tail lights are leaking water. Gotta reseal them. I also noticed that there is a missing bolt for the bumper filler & one of the holes were letting water in. I am guessing the water is running off the panel & into the hole. There is also the trunk seal issue... I used a method suggested by Dave to reseal the trunk.. Well, it no go. I used a cheap spongey seal and it is soaking up the water. My guess is the seal is soaking it up then the water is flowing from the seal to the trunk. I'll have to try again. Next is to do a patch job on the floor & fix the trunk leak.
Glad to see you have pinpointed the leaks, now it's just a matter of sealing them up!
I will snap a shot of where my quarter panels were leaking and I had to seal up. It's a fold in the metal at the back that has an open corner and lets water fill up inside the quarter panels. Better explained with pictures...
That would be awesome! Thanks for any assistance on the trunk leak. I am so willing to learn so I can get this car in the shape she needs to be in. One good thing happened tonite is I won a pair of control arms off ebay for $10.51. They are in better shape than mine and are only 20 minutes away from me so I can pick them up. They do need the lower ball joints and bushings but the ones on my car are shot so it's all good anyways.
Is there a reason you want to go with a metal patch for the floor boards?? When my hubby used to work on VW bugs, he would use fiberglass to patch the rust holes. It comes in big sheets and you could probably do the whole floor board by cutting the sheet to the shape of it. Then just poor and spread the resin on it and let it dry. It drys clear so hubby would put a business card in it before it dried! LOL When he did his kid's bug, they put pictures in it too!
In fact I have 4 holes in my floor boards and when we get ready to put new carpet in the car, that is how I will have him fix them. I will probably ad a pic or something in it too! LOL
That woud work except for one major problem... just about the entire floor needs replaced. Yup, it's that bad lol.
THE TRANNY IS IN!! THE TRANNY IS IN!!
In case you couldn't tell, I am happy that Harold II finally has a tranny installed for the first time in just over 11 months. I have a few little odds & ends to finalise the install, like replacing the driveshaft rear u-joint, hooking up the cooler lines, bolting the torque convertor to the flexplate, draining & refilling the tranny itself and of course hooking up the starter but I am still a very, very happy camper.
I ran into a problem with the flexplate bolt I got to replace one I lost. It was too long & wouldn't fully tighten up. Since I was in a major bind I oouldn't wait to get one from someone on here, so I went to O'Reilly Auto & bought a 3 pack of Mr Gasket flexplate bolts for about $7. A bit pricey, but I had no choice, aside from leaving it off, which was a no no... Anyhow, it is bolted up in there & fills the void quite nicely.
More to come soon.
Got a little more work done to the car...
The torque converter bolts are on, block to bell housing torqued down, oil pan back on & oil back in the engine. Because the rings are the original from 1977 I decided to go with a little heavier weight, using 10w-40 instead of 10w-30. No leaks at all, so my decision to replace the rear seal has proven to be good. Tomorrow I am going to drop the transmission pan, install the new gasket & filter & put fresh transmission fluid in her. I am also going to reinstall the starter, as well as replacing a torn tie rod end boot. The tie rod end was replaced in 2006 so I know it is still good. I tore it when I was removing it from the steering knuckle to make dropping the steering rack easier. More to come soon.
Sounds like you are making some pretty good progress!! You will be road worthy in no time!!! ;D
Oh, I sure hope so Kim. I tell ya though, I am on cloud 9 since that happened today though. Hoping all goes as well tomorrow for me.
Well,
not much has gone on with my Pinto since I got the tranny back in. A few things I did get done to the car include reinstalling the tranny dipstick, installing the egr valve line that goes to the exhaust and installing the exhaust downpipe.
Back in 2006 when my car died on the way home from Carlisle the idiot tow truck driver broke my exhaust pipe. I have had it rigged up with a sheet metal patch to quiet the car enough to drive but I needed to fix it better. I installed a downpipe I bought off quickrick on here and just now got it taken care of.
I had to cut off the end a little so I could use an exhaust coupler to connect the pipe, but I couldn't get it to slide over the new piece. After some heating and hammering I got the reducer on. Only problem is the reducer is the same size as the original pipe. What I did to remedy that is joined them using another coupler to go over both, the oe main pipe and the replacement downpipe.
Tomorrow I'm gonna do a test fit on the pipe & make any adjustments as needed for length. I'm also going to fabricate a new exhaust hanger, as the rear one that was welded to the pipe has long since broken off. No coat hangers will be used. If I am going to fix it I will fix it right, or as close to it as my budget and parts availability will allow. I'll take some pics of what I am doing.
Great news about getting the tranny back in! Hope to here Harold II is on the road soon!
Chuck :afro:
:) Thanks Chuck, I hope so too. If all goes according to plan I'll have the car on the road in a couple weeks. Gotta get a few more things buttoned up on her before the Ohio meet in July.
WOW! You have done soo much in the past few weeks. Glad to hear you're getting it back together again and haven't lost hope.
Thanks Dave... I dunno why but I have been extra motivated to get the work done to her. Hopefully I'll have her running by next weekend at the latest. Then I can worry about fixing that trunk leak and floor sheet metal.
Well all in all, working on it will be more enjoyable once the car is actually running and drivable. I keep telling my friend the same on his 75 Jeep we are building from the ground up. Once you get past the hard part, everything else seems menial and easy, if it isn't so.
Anyone know were to get window gaskets for the small side windows
I have both sides, but next time post in the "Pinto Parts Wanted" forum.
Not much has happened with the car the past couple weeks since I installed the tranny. It's been just to friggin hot out for me. Only May and we are already hitting the 80s. We're in for a hot one this summer.
One thing I have been doing is working on installing a Realistic radio booster/equalizer I bought at the Springfield, Ohio swap meet. Previously I was gonna install a clock where the a/c heater control would go, but I have decided to mount the booster there instead. I have a rectangular plate I cut to put in place of the a/c control, and have cut out a hole for the booster. Before I'm done with it I am gonna cover the panel with some black vinyl. Hopefully it will look as good as it does in my head.
Pics to come soon.
80's? your complaining its hot in the 80's? omg lol Come out here for a week man, its 104+ this week (I dont trust the Weather people) I would rather go by my thermometer. I cant work outside for more then 30 mins without Baking to hell...
For out here, you bet! ;D
Not much has been going on with my car lately. I went to Phils toys place to get some parts for my car from his Bobcat parts car. Got a battery tray, rear quarter sections to repair mine, replacement washer bottle, muffler, passenger side floor and some blue interior parts for my interior color change.
I was using a wire wheel in my dad's drill to get the battery tray cleaned so I can fill any holes & paint for the car. So far, so good. Next I am gonna do a temporary patch job on the floor and drop the gas tank so I can get the car driveable.
I am also gonna take the radiator to a shop to get it fixed. The thing is so far gone it will prolly need recored. More to come later, as well as a pic of the parts.
can i have your weather so i can work on my car too? I get off work in Mid day heat. so its peaking at 3:30ish and that's when i get home lol.
Things seem to be turning around for my car! I was looking for a place to get my radiator repaired, but struck out every place I looked. I was at the end of my rope so I decided to look in the yellow pages at the junkyard section. I called the first place that specializes in older car parts & they had a radiator in stock for $50 with exchange! Just got it home & fit it in the car. It needs cleaned off as it is quite dusty but that doesn't matter to me. I'm gonna clean the tank up since it is exposed & also run some water through it to make sure there is no crud in it that could cause a problem. It looks clean inside but I want to flush it out since it was sitting around for a long, long time. One more thing I like about it... It is an original Ford radiator. It has the insignia plain as day on the top tank, along with the part number. Now for that pesky gas tank!
Well, I ran water through the radiator & got it all cleaned up. I also used some 200 grit sandpaper on the top of the radiator to clean it up. Looks better & is ready for a little paint. I did use some metal polish on the radiator cap, and it is very shiney now. I installed the washer bottle I got off Phil & it holds fluid nicely.
Unfortunately the gas tank is shot. I didn't get a chance to pull it, but when I was getting ready to install the license plate light I noticed the gas tank was wet. It was gas. I now need to replace the gas tank before I start the car. If it isn't one thing with this car it's another.
Hey! You stole my quote! lol. ;) ;D :)
Nah... I been saying that for years about this car. I must save her.
It's official on the tank. I removed the driver side strap and she started peeing in the drain pan I put beneath her.. Hmmm driveway is to hospital bed as drain pan is to bed pan
Anyways The gas looks very nasty, I think from all the rust in the tank. It still smells fresh but looks horrible. I will be donating that stuff to the lawnmower. Next I will be dropping the tank and turning it upside down so I can attempt to patch the hole. It will be a temporary patch so I can get her going, and I will be replacing the tank. More to come soon. Gotta see if she is done peeing
She quit peeing so I removed the other strap. That was not fun at all but I will say that was the easiest gas tank I have ever pulled, not to mention the lightest. I did forget to remove the gas cap so the cover snapped off it. I hammered on the lip & screwed it back on. It's all good. I used some of that Permatex gas tank patch putty & will be letting it sit overnight. Next will come the soap and water to clean it out, as well as the chain to remove some of the rusticles from the inside of the tank. That will be happening tomorrow, as well as putting new rubber hoses up there. They weren't that old but I got lazy & cut them to remove the tank. No problem since it's cheap to replace it.

Leave it to Matt to stuff a bodily function comparison in there. :P :o ;D
What I used whn I cleaned mine was acetone (like for paint.) I believe it breaks up the varnishy residue in the tank. Then soap 'n' water it.
I couldn't help myself  It really looked like she was peeing.. And she took a while too. Good thing she had a paper to read :read: ;D
That poor lil' car... if she could blush in embarassment she would. :embarrassed:  :o
LOL.. Good thing she is unconscious at the moment. Soon she will live for the first time since early 2007.
I know you'll do it! Too bad I can't be there to help... then again we'd laugh so hard we're bound to knock off some dirt-grease-oil chunks from the underside of HII and they'd fall like snow into our howling mouths. Yuck! :P :D
Nah... No grease under there.. Just lots & lots of rust :'(
She will live, hopefully by the end of the week :D
Guess that's one way to get your iron... iron oxide. :cheesy_n:
You know it hun. :lol:And for fiber I chew on the worn out driver seat
...or anyway with the synthetics in the seats you'll grow another body part in an inappropriate place. :o
That'd zoop. I have all the body parts I need. Good thing I plan on installing some high quality seats out of a Mercury Topaz coupe.. mmmmm power driver seat :)
Well, I cleaned out the tank & had lots of rust come out of it. I rinsed the tank three times and had lots & lots of rust & sediment come out of it. There is still a little in there but I have done the best I can on this tank. After I got it cleaned out I filled the tank with some water to check the repair on it.
1/2 hour later no water had dripped from the repair. I drained the water and tomor I was able to row I will be fabricating a strainer to replace the old, dead one. I am gonna buy a strainer from the parts store, cut it, and use a clamp to hold it to the sending unit. That would work until I can track down the correct strainer. According to Ricart Ford the strainer is part of the sending unit, which I don't believe as back in 2006 I was able to get one but chose not to. Stupid move, and now I am paying for it.
To make things a little worse I found the sending unit float has a tiny, tiny pin hole in it. The hole is so small I can't even see it until the fuel seeps out of it. I am gonna see if I can fix it with a little JB weld, especially since I replaced it back in 2006.
Got the gas tank done!!!
I got new fuel hoses, as well as a fuel strainer for the car. It isn't the correct one for the car, as I could not find one at this time, so I bought one from the parts store, cut it in half, and clamped it to the sender. It is on there snug, and does not interfere with the float arm. I also installed the repaired float to the arm. Hopefully the repair to the float works, but to be honest I'm not gonna hold my breath.
After I reinstalled the sending unit I got the tank back under the car. I made sure to clean off the driver side strap of any rust to make sure it didn't rub the repair the wrong way. I did put about a gallon of gas in the tank & so far all is dry. I have some pics of the gas tank repair, as well as the sending unit mod & I will get them up as soon as possible.
Next I plan on installing the muffler I got from Phils Toys, as well as making a couple temporary patches for the floor. While I did get a replacement passenger floor from Phil I don't have the time or equipment to weld it in. The patch will be temporary and will do for now. I also plan on getting the ignition module mounted on the car, instead of just sitting there. If all goes according to plan the car will be ready to fire up by the end of the week.
More to come later.
Not much happened to the car today. The heat and humidity was up there today, and I had to clean my work area, so I could work on the car. It was literally so bad that I couldn't walk 6 inches without tripping over something.
Anyways, I did get a little done to the car. I had a problem with a stripped out bolt hole on the egr valve. I took a look at it & found that just the first few threads were gone, so I found a longer bolt in my collection & got the EGR to tighten up with no problem. I also got the ignition module bolted back to the car and the top of the radiator painted with semi-gloss black engine paint.
While cleaning the garage I found the missing lighter and ashtray so I got that back in the car. I also cleaned up the driveshaft & got it ready for the new u-joint. More to come soon.
Good for you Matty! You're kicking butt! I know all about tripping over the tools. I finally cleared them out of my living room for the same reason... :o ::) :rolleye: Now come out here and fix mine! lol.
Hmmmmm.... Okay, works for me. For payment I will take one of your Pintos off your hands
Yeah right, like that would happen. I couldn't take them away from you.
there you go with that crazy talk again. Do I need to lock you in a padded room? ;D
There's room for two in there now. I expanded.
Yeah... for you and Robert! lol. ;D
Nah.. I expanded in the coed section  ;)
I am rotten
You are. But for some strange reason we love you anyway! ::)
lol.. True, true. And yet nobody knows why. We better behave before they tell us to get a room
...with padded walls! lol!
Well, I got a little bit done to Harold II today. I started off by pulling off the carb so I can clean it out & adjust it. Found about 1/8" of rust in the bottom of the bowl. Good thing I dropped the tank to fix the leak. Gave me a chance to flush it out. I also got a new vacuum line that goes from the bottom of the air cleaner to the vacuum air heater valve mounted on the hard part of the duct. Nothing else, as I wasn't home too long & had to pack my car of any tool I need for my grandma's a/c repair. I'm still planning on firing her up this weekend. Just need a few little things so she can run. Hopefully more will happen Wednesday. I might get the carb back together & on the car tomorrow evening, might not. Depends when I get done with my grandma's a/c.
There is something special when you can fire it up and hear it run. it just re-charges you to keep going. Hang in.
jim
Thanx Jim, I agree. I am just counting down the days till the weekend, when I can get the starter on the car. Once I do that nothing can stop me from firing her up! :fastcar:
New Goal!!!
Get the car to fire up tomorrow or Thursday. Why the bump in the goal you ask? Because today I got the carb all cleaned out & adjusted. There isn't much to do to get her running, so I figure why not shoot for tomorrow or Thursday?.
Now, I did test my battery, and it is starting to show some age. The battery was replaced about a year before I bought the car and it wasn't that good of a battery to begin with. It just stands to reason that it is gonna go sooner, rather than later. Tomorrow I am gonna get some gas for her, as well as reinstall the driveshaft, tranny lines, and hopefully the starter. If that happens there is no reason why she won't start. As to how well she will run, I don't know. The goal is just to get her started.. Nothing more, nothing less.
The time is 9:00pm in Ohio. At Approximately 8:58 Harold II was awakened from her 3 year long coma. While she is quite groggy and does not respond too well to the accelerator I am quite confident that come tomorrow she will have the get up and go of a newborn Pinto.
It came into my mind to make it sound like a patient in a hospital, especially since that is how I view my Harold II. She is not only my car, but my baby. Hopefully she likes her transplant, as well as the "open heart surgery" performed on her old, worn out engine. More to come tomorrow ;D ;D :D
:fastcar: :tgif: Today, not only does TGIF stand for Thank God It's Friday, but also Thank God It's Fixed!!!
Congrats on Harold II!
That may or may not be a dried out accelerator pump in the carb.
I'm amused that Harold II is a she.
In Sci-Fi Guy!, a webcomic that I'm working up, there are a cat-girl named Tom, a calico named Rover, and a tabby named Melvin. Melvin's clueless owner says things like "He had kittens."
Also there 's Pursia in my InterStellar OverDrive comic. Pursia is a female Junior on the planet she's from. So she's technically a Leonina Jr.
Thanks!
I know it isn't the accelerator pump because when I took the carb off the car I disassembled it to clean out any and all the rust that was in any crevis of the carb. One thing I did look at was the accelerator pump & it was very flexible. I'm gonna try to advance the timing a little to see if maybe that will help. One difference is on the car I installed the idle solenoid thing off of a carb I bought off a buddy of mine. Might try and disconnect that & see what happens.
Wooo Hoooo!!! Glad she finally ran!!! You are almost ready for the open road!!!! Can't wait to see some pics of Harrold II and some Ohio backgrounds!! ;D
Congrats!!!!
Thanks Kim. At this moment she is sitting at the top of the driveway so I can work on her first thing in the morning. I have 4 quarts of tranny fluid in her & will put in 4 more after the car will run under her own power. I'm gonna see what I can find out about why the car will not run when I give her gas. It's almost as if she is suffering from fuel starvation, but I'm not too sure. I can't run her too long with no muffler on. That will be the first thing to get fixed tomorrow ;D
Sure wish I could go over there and help or hinder you! lol. I'm proud of you Matty! Harold II will be rarin' to go before you know it. I'm already suffering from Old Timer's Disease because I don't remember if you did any carb work, but maybe that's why she stalls when you press the accelerator. See? Wish I was there... ;)
good job getting life back in her. now if only you had a muffler ...hummmm...............
good thing we cut that one off.
keep up the good work.
phils toys
Thanks Becky, Yeah I rebuilt the carb just a day before I started her up. We'll see what happens today.
Thanks Phil, Back in the 80's my mom got pulled over for a loud exhaust. She knew the state trooper that pulled her over & he told her "Anita, the muffler is supposed to be on the car. Not in the car".
I thought of her last nite since the muffler is sitting in the back. Got to shorten the pipe some more, then the muffler will fit. Thank goodness for sawzalls lol.
I got the exhaust on the car & man does it sound awfull. I dunno if the patch job is making it sound like crap or if maybe the muffler was more junk than either Phil or I thought. I dunno but hopefully I can get her running right so I can find out. I did notice that when I had the right side in the air & tried to start the car she was leaking oil. It stopped as soon as I lowered the right side back down so I dunno what to make of it. One thing at a time.
where was the leak? was the leak at the top of the pan? or somewhere else? if its the pan go over the bolts again and make sure they are torqued correctly and check it again.
It was coming from the back of the engine. As quick as it started it stopped, so not too sure. Prolly will go over the bolts again just to make sure.
I remembered something about when I replaced the crank & all the related parts.. I didn't replace the rear oil pan seal. I bought a gasket set & did replace the front but the rear looked good so I left it alone. I am thinking I may have knocked it off when I reinstalled the oil pan. Least of my problems at the moment. Gotta get the car running first.
Forgot to update on the car...
Today I bolted on the exhaust & installed the alternator belt & tried to start the car. No go so I advanced the timing & she ran, but very fast idle. I disconnected the idle solenoid & it dropped back down. I got the solenoid on a carb I got from a buddy of mine but I will be taking it back off. Oh well, I tried anyways..
After fooling around with it I was able to get her going & set the timing. When I did that the car would not run with the vacuum advance hooked up. I am thinking the cam gear is off a few teeth or so. When I have the crank at TDC the distributor is at number one, but not sure of the cam. Gonna pull the timing cover to see. If the belt is off I'll reindex the cam & go from there.
I did get 5 quarts of tranny fluid in the car so once the car is running more consistently I will run through the gears & fill the tranny the rest of the way. I am a bit nervous since I don't know the condition of the tranny at all. I bought it off Pintony in 2006 but took him for his work it is good. We will see when I finish installing the fluid.
Good to see the progress. On the tranny, if it has sat for at least 3 years you might have some small leak issues untill the seals get well lubricated just fom sitting. My c3 is working very well and i am happy.
Glad to hear that! I did go ahead & replace the external seals before putting it in the car so hopefully that will take care of that.
Don't be like me and, uh, overtorque the pan bolts. I still haven't forgiven myself. :'(
Just drove her around the block... Yes, you heard right. I changed the plugs and distributor & she fired right up. She has a heavy misfire but she still drives. Gonna work on fixing that, as well as the oil leak.
The misfiring reminded me of a couple weeks ago. I took Avi (the Flying Avocado) to my best friend's place and when I tried to start her up to go home she actually backfired through the carb. It sounded like a gunshot. My friend looked out the window and her neighbor came out of his house and asked me about the noise. She hasn't done that since. I blame Fred! (just kidding Fred.)

So do I lol.. It's gotta be a plug wire. They were way too long so I shortened them. I think I may have damaged them when I removed them to replace the plugs. Bad thing is I dunno how I can time the engine with it missing as bad as it is.
You might as well replace the wires too. When I was getting Wildfire to run so we could go to Knott's the little metal cylinder in the plug wires that pops onto the spark plug disengaged fron the wire so I just replaced all the wires. I know it's more expense, and if I could afford to I'd send you the funds, but I think this is your next step. ;D
Oh you know it Becky... Only thing is I hateoverly long plug wires. Dunno at this point. We'll see.

that is a definate
step giant leap forward.
keep at it matt.

Good news!!!!
After fooling with a bad miss at idle, with help from other Pinto members I tracked down a vacuum leak. The vacuum tree on the number 4 intake runner had a bad, bad rubber plug over the top, causing a MAJOR vacuum leak. I replaced the plug, as well as another small one and the car fired right up with no problem!
As the distributor in the car had a broken plug on it I swapped it out with a different one & got the timing and idle set.The car now fires up within a second of turning the key and at idle she runs so smooth, it's as if the car isn't running.
I have to be careful when I first get on the gas since it bogs down a bit at first but then I can get into it & she revs great!
Next I plan on fixing the oil leak, which I identified as the rear oil pan seal. Then I will be installing the radio and reassembling the interior. This car is really coming along & I couldn't be any happier about that. Next stop.... Mentor, Ohio.. Then Corry, PA!!!
now thats good news r4 glad shes doing so well
Thanks! I'm gonna put a different carb on the car to try to eliminate the initial bogging I am experience when I first start to rev the engine. Back when I bought the car in 2005 I was told by the previous owner they couldn't get the carb to act right. I rebuilt it but have never gotten the car to run right on it. Time to just get a different carb, especially since they are popping up on ebay.
good luck.
Congrats on getting her running!!!! (Ok, I know I already said that on yahoo, but had to put it on here too!! LOL)
A carb swap is what I had to do on the Green Machine! Once I did the swap she ran fine!! Cleaned the old carb twice before the swap and never fixed the problem. I got my new carb off ebay too!!! Great place when it comes to getting some stuff kinda cheap!! ;D Just got to be in the right place at the right time1!!!!
Congrats again. Now go out and drive!!! :police: ;D
Didn't get the carb. While I was out working on my Grandma's car someone else set a better bid than I did. Oh well.
Hey!!!! Do you know how many things I haven't won on Ebay for my Pinto???? Anyway, I'm sure a new carb will come up soon, and you'll get a great deal. Look forward to hearing about more of your progress.....Larry :police:
Thanks
I was hoping to have a different carb on the car before my trip to Mentor, Oh in about a week but oh well, can't cry over spilled milk lol.
Got a little done to the car today..
It was supposed to rain so I didn't want to worry about the oil leak the car has. Instead I went ahead and worked on fixing little things that drove me crazy.
One thing I looked at was the key buzzer. It worked when I bought the car but not since. Found the buzzer itself is broken so I gotta get a replacement. The seat belt buzzer also didn't work so I tracked down the connector & did some investigating using the 78 EVTM manual. On my car the light would work but not the buzzer. The book said to look for continuity at the seat belt buckle connector. I went to do that, only to find it was unplugged! I plugged in the connector & it worked. I also went ahead and tried to figure out why my washer pump would not work. I push the button & get nothing. It worked when I parked the car in 2007 so this puzzled me. I had an old washer pump pig tail so I used it to bypass the wiring & switch. The pump worked with no problem. I'm gonna investigate further tomorrow.
The blue kick panels I got from Phils Toys also went on the car. They look 100% better than the old, chipping nasty black ones that used to be green. Lastly, the radio. I bought a cheap radio from Pick N Pull over a month ago, and since I got the car running I went ahead and hooked it up. For a 13 dollar radio it actually sounds decent, although the LCD display for the channels keep flickering. It's only temporary until I can get the 8 track back in there, so I don't care too much. It's got a wood grain trim piece around it, so it actually goes with the scheme of the old interior. Tomorrow I plan on fixing the oil leak and the dome light. It woks when I turn the knob but not when I open the door.
No more leaky engine!!! I installed a new oil pan gasket & that solved the problem. When I installed the old one it apparently slipped off inside the pan. That caused me to lose oil. No problem, all fixed.
I also took the car for a drive & noticed I could not get on the gas for anything. I am thinking it is because the carb is junk since even the previous owner had problems with it. I will be looking at it tomorrow after I get home from my uncles place. Fixing his brakes.
We'll see what I can find when I tear into the carb. At this point that is just about the only thing that is gonna prevent the car from driving to Mentor, Oh for the Pinto meet, and that will get fixed one way or another.
The carb I got off ebay arrived today so I ripped off the old one & bolted on the new one. At first the car seemed to have the same boging problem, but when I took her for a drive it shortly went away. I also adjusted the driver door so I could open it & close it with no problem. Tomorrow I am gonna bolt up the driver fender back on the car & also make sure the lights are working. I will also be patching the rear floor & reinstall the interior.
Well, I got the temporary patch job on the floor & also got the interior back in the car. It's been such a while that it looks wierd to have an interior in the car lol. I also installed the replacement seat belt on the passender side of the car. After that I took the car on a drive & she seemed to do alright. The carb does need some minor tuning so I'm gonna make the adjustments tomorrow. The choke doesn't want to set so I'm gonna get that taken care of. She did seem to do alright on the freeway but we'll see what happens tomorrow after the adjustments.
That's awesome Matt!!!!
Hope the carb adjustments do the trick and you have a confident driver!!!! ;D
Matt,
The Harold II project is sounding better all the time! Keep up the good work!
Dwayne
Months have passed, and the car still sits without a sending unit in the tank. This week I plan on getting the sending unit back in the tank, provided I can find the ring to hold it in. Dad rearranged the whole garage, and now I know where none of my tools or parts are. More to come soon.
Darn Dads! Sometimes when I straighten up a room or the garage I inadvertently do the same thing- to myself! That's why I avoid straightening up! lol.
Matty, Harold II's issues will work themselves out in time. As a Pinto Mom whose Baby is somewhat in the same boat- but with more issues I know how frustrating not having funds or not having- or finding- the essential part you need can be. All I can tell you is hang in there. You have to keep plugging away at her. I expect Harold II and yourself to be there at Carlisle in 2011. Don't despair. You'll find a way. :)
Thanks Becky,
I expect her to be there as well. If all goes according to plan she will go to Carlisle the next two years! Going to blow out the fuel lines to make sure there is no rust (or water) hanging out in them.
Update:
It has warmed up so on Thursday or Sunday I will be reinstalling the sending unit. I will also be blowing out the fuel lines, putting gas in her & seeing what happens. If all goes according to plan she will run soon.
Wish me luck! tomorrow I will be working on getting her running, and this time stay running. We'll see what happens.

Best of luck, Matt! I have faith in you AND in Harold II!
Dwayne
I got you covered Matty... Good JuJu headed your way! C'mon Harold II!
JuJu no good today :( It rained all day long so I couldn't work on the car. We will see what happens soon.

That darned Becky... she sent you mechanical Ju-Ju without weather Ju-Ju (weather Ju-Ju never occurs to those California girls )
Here's some Ju-Ju from Virginia for mechanical prowess AND good weather!
Dwayne
It's alright Matt, we got hit hard with that same storm today. :(
Well,
I got moved in & have been too busy to work on the car. That is going to change, hopefully in the morning. I am planning on getting some fresh gas, blowing out the fuel lines, reinstalling the sending unit, & evicting the bees from the outside mirrors.
Hopefully after tomorrow she will run. Gotta make sure I have the key to the Omni GLH, as she is parked behind the Pinto. Can't move the Pinto if I can't move the Omni.
Went to the car yesterday but it was stormy to work on the car. It has been over a year since she has been started but the battery still holds a charge! Although drained I could still listen to the radio!
The headliner stitching is gone so I will need to fingure something out to get that rigged up for now.

Matt,
Your battery sounds like a couple of mine. Neither my '72 Pinto nor my '83 F-150 have anything on them option-wise that would drain the battery. The battery in my truck was installed new in March of 1998 and still starts under its own power, although it admittedly sounds a little weak during the Winter months! lol
Dwayne
That's what is wierd... I have a radio that has power all the time since it is digital. With that I really don't understand why the battery still has a charge since there has been a drain on it. Oh well, no complaints there lol.
The work has started... Hook the battery up to the battery charger... Check. Disconnect the rubber hose from the fuel pump... Check. Find out why the dome light won't come on with the door open... Check & fixed.
Dummy me. The dome light problem was caused by the simplest of problems... The plug was disconnected from the switch. Plugged it in & she works. Now I am going to blow out the fuel lines, reconnect the line to the pump, & reinstall the sending unit, along with the replacement strainer I bought a year ago. We'll se if she runs good after that.
IT'S ALIVE!!!! ALIIIIIVVVEE!!! MUAHAHAHAHA!!!!!
Now that I am done with my frankenstein moment, it's true, the Pinto is alive once again. I blew out the fuel lines, installed a brand spankin new fuel filter, reinstalled the sending unit with new filter on the end, & put 5 gallons of fresh unleaded in her. She stumbled a bit at first but after the gas got to the carb she started up! Now she runs very, very rough at first but once I rev it a couple times she smoothes right out. I'm certain it's an adjustment that needs done with the carb.
I did see there was a little seepage at the carb at a cap on the left side near the fuel filter, so I am going to see if I can get that to stop leaking, otherwise it's off to the auto parts store to get a rebuild kit for one of my spares.
After I go get my head shrunk I am going to work on cleaning her up & out, so she looks better as she is sitting in the driveway.
Next thing planned for her after cleaning is to adjust the exhaust, as I bottom out everytime I hit a bump. I repaired a broken piece last year & think I just need to shorted the main pipe a little more to accomodate for the sleeve joining the two pieces together.
How are her shocks? If she's bottoming out her shocks probably are shot. Anyway, good for you and Harold II!!! I had faith in you two!!! ;D
Her shocks are the originals from 1977 so I know they are shot. The exhaust is bottoming out because it is too low to the ground. I just have to adjust it to get it up higher.
Thanks for the kind words Becky, now off to get my head examind lol.
Matt, how long has the carb been sitting, a year? It might have some varnish built up in it.
Congrats on getting it running.
Russ
I'm sure you'll be fine Matty. Just the same, happy head examining!
GO MATT GO !!!!!!!!
I've had good luck running Seafoam through the tank after a car has been sitting a while. That may be enough to take care of your rough idle at startup.
Good job on wiping off the dust and more fun is to follow I'm sure!
-beegle55
Thanks guys!! Beegle55, I will get me a bottle of Seafoam & go ahead & put it in the tank. Couldn't hurt anything.
I actually ran the car for a while today & that car really missed being alive. If I wanted to I could probably go out to the car right now & start her right up. That car runs so very smooth. When I first start her up after she sits it's a little rough but smooths out, I forgot how smooth she can run. I just need to adjust the carb so it will run better during startup.
Matty, I don't know about the chokes on later models but Wildfire's choke is automatic- she runs- I mean ran- rough when she was first started til the choke warmed up and opened. She's a '74, and she got fed Sea Foam, Lucas oil, carb cleaner (no not all at once! lol). Whatever the case may be, in the wise words of Larry The Cable Guy... Git 'er done! lol. Like always, I'm rootin' for you! I want Ruby to meet her younger sister from Ohio. ;D
And you will Becky, and you will. Maybe I will give you a ride in her if you're nice lol.
I just gotta work on adjust the driver door, as it is a little off on the adjustment. The door is mangled from the incident a couple years back, but the filler on the door makes it look a little better.
ME!? NICE!?! LOL That'll be the day! I'll just hop in her regardless! And if YOU'RE nice I won't even bring my Towel Of Death. Whhhhap-SNAP! lol. :o ;D
And what fun would that be if you don't bring the towel?? ;) lol
True, true... ::)
I tell ya, tomorrow I plan on cleaning the interior of the car & get the inside windows clean. The silver sharpie on everything inside still looks good. Maybe I will still mount the equalizer in the car, or atleast do a mockup of it.

don't put too much in there matt, don't know if it will hurt the Pinto (since they are so tough!!) but I have been fixing 2.0 Escorts who's intake valve seats drop out after jiffee lube tells the customer they need to have the fuel injection system flushed out and they dump a can in the tank! A 16 oz can treats like 25 gallons so just give it a sip. ;)
Hmmmm... Thanks for the info. I will make sure to only put about 1/4 can since the tank is only 1/2 full.
Congratulations, Matt! Glad to hear Harold II is running again! Now, if I could only get some of your enthusiasm and energy to rub off on me! :rolleye:
Dwayne
Thanks Dwayne,
I hope the enthusiasm will continue, since I have a bad history of not doing that lol.
Today I was working on a Toyota Tundra's brakes so I couldn't do much to the Pinto. However, I did go ahead & get a garden hose so I could wash the car. There was a years worth of dirt & debris, so I wanted to go after it bigtime. That car looks so much better, especially without all the cobsebs & such that were clinging all over the car. I still need to work on the carb because the car just doesn't seem to run too good with the current carb. It smells quite rich when it is running, so I gotta figure out what to do with that.
silly question, but did you put fresh gas in the tank?
and it could be just from the car sitting so long. Holley carbs used to be famous for going bad after sitting(back in the 70's)(which is why I still don't like them), for example.
Try a tank of new gas, and give it a good long drive. Even if that doesn't fix it, it will feel good. :-)
Russ
Yup, as fresh as I could get. The car had no gas in it at all. When I bought the carb off ebay I slapped it on the car, but it never felt quite right. I am actually thinking of rebuilding the original carb & slapping it back on. The car fires right up, but doesn't seem quite right. On the other hand I recall replacing the carb because I couldn't get the original carb to work right anymore, so I dunno.
The parts collecting has begun!! I am in the process of getting things ready for the power steering install, & have added a post with a list of parts I am needing for my car to make her show ready for Carlisle 2011. I am stoked! I gotta decide what to do about the carb & get that car road readyt bigtime because as she sits she won't be able to go far reliably. I just wish I could fix the headliner before Calrlisle but I prolly won't be able to. Might just have to glue some new vinyl over the old headliner for a temporary fix.
I went to the car today, but I couldn't get motivated to do anything constructive at all. She is missing due to a vacuum leak, the exhaust is banging against the leaf spring & about 1/2 inch from the ground, seeping gas at the carb, too low idle, needing carb adjustments, interior cleaned out, door adjusted... So much, yet I couldn't do anything at all. I couldn't even make brackets to mount the floor console & radio booster/equalizer in the console.
Some days I don't know why I even bother.
when you look at the car you have to see what you want it to be. and either visualize yourself getting there bit by bit, or making yourself do it as i have been having to do lately. as long as you can get yourself into a PMA (positive mental Attitude) you should be able to get things done. Ive recently gotten everything out of my car and am starting the interior work on it. even tho its 115+ outside i really wanna see some progress, even if its small
I know you're right about the positive attitude part & I am getting help in that department. Yup, I been getting my head checked.. It's the american way of life it seems lol.. Anyways, as for picturing what the car will look like when done I even see it in my head as we speak.
Interior:
Nice blue seats from a Mercury Topaz coupe. Why a Topaz you ask? Because the Topaz has a better chance of a power driver seat than the Tempo lol. The interior is going to be a combination of blue & black. The seats, carpet, rear panels, door panels, kick panels, & center dash will be blue. The dash cap & top of the doors will be black, floor console black, sunvisors black.. Headliner I haven't decided if I am going to go black or blue. Factory style 8-track player, 2 speakers in the dash, 2 on the rear deck, wiper delay, equalizer/booster in the a/c style Pinto console, followed by a Mustang II console between the seats. Deluxe steering wheel, deluxe door panels, wood grain insert on the dash, wood grain shifter trim & e-brake handle.
Exterior: Blue, close to a shade offered in 1973, steel wheels with the slotted hubcaps, sport remote mirrors.
Trunk & engine compartment are basically done. I am going to fix a trunk leak & probably paint the inside a gloss black, that is not final. The engine compartment has been painted gloss black, but it doesn't look its best. The engine for the most part has been rebuilt, the lone exception being the piston rings. The engine had great compression so I left them alone. Power steering & power braks will get installed on the car.
That is pretty much what I am planning on doing with her & hopefully I can get it all done, or atleast most of it done before carlisle.
So far today I have been working on Harold II & while I haven't gotten too much done I am getting little things fixed. I am working on installing the radio & equalizer & have put some gas tank sealer on the plug that was leaking on the carb. It has been on there for about 2.5 hrs & hopefully in a little bit I will be working on tuning the carb to get the car running smoother. I am also rewiring the radio, so I don't have all the audio equipment running through one ground. More to come later
The gas leak is gone. The gas tank repair worked on the carb. No seepage at all, so that is another problem gone. Now I am going to work on the radio wiring. There is a slight problem with the starter solenoid plug, as I just tried to start the car & I had to jiggle the plug to get the car to start. No harm, as it's not suprizing, being a 33 year old car.
Update!!!!
With the help of my best friend's 10 yr old son I got the exhaust issue fixed, as well as worked on the curb idle. I checked it with my Sears Engine Analyzer I bought way back when & while it wasn't completely solid the idle wasn't too bad. The needle drifts a bit from about 840-860 & runs very nicely. . The next thing I plan on doing is finding the dratted tail pipe, mount it on the muffler, & also adjust the fast idle. Right now it is probably about 1000 or so, & I know it needs to be higher. I also plan on rewiring the stereo in the car, so I can get it & the booster all hooked up. Next, I gotta find the money to pay for the power brake parts I am getting from Tigger, as well as the power steering setup I will be buying from him as well. Once I get that stuff on the car I will be a happy camper, as I will be able to steer & stop the car so much easier. Pics to come soon.
Good for you Matty! :D
Who said 10-year-olds are useless!? lol. ;D
You have an old Sears Engine Analyzer too?! Awesome! My dad bought one in the 80s for use on my Pinto but he only used it once. Still in it's original box! I use it when I do full tune-ups. Black and silver, yes?
Yep Dave, that's the one. It works really good, although I lost the box years ago lol.
Matt,
Child labor is super-efficient in any form... and especially if you grown your own!
Glad to hear you are continuing to make progress on Harold II.
Dwayne
Thanks Dwayne, I am mainly concerned of the structural integrity of the car, since she is so rusty.. I got too much invested at this point to give up on her now.
Update....
I adjusted the fast idle, wired up the passenger side dome light switch, adjusted the heater control cables, cut & mounted the tailpipe, reinstalled the glovebox.. All that in about a week. Next thing is to go ahead & get the radio hooked up & reinstalled. I can't wait for that!
I have a list of about 5 car shows that I plan on taking the car to in the next month, all I have to do is get her registered & insured.
At the rate you're going Matt, I have no doubt you'll make it! Keep up the good work!
Dwayne
Yeah, she really is coming along Dwayne, Hopefully I will get the rear shocks installed & find a way to take care of the horrible rust problem underneath the car lol.

I'm sure you'll figure it all out. I have faith in you and Harold II.
Dwayne
Thanks Dwayne, I hope you're right. I am going to take some pics of the car tomorrow when I am off & hopefully get them posted. I just need to find a welder & learn to do it myself lol.
Well, the day was productive, but not too productive. I got the radio all hooked up & tested, & adjusted the door. The radio doesn't sound too bad, considering it is older than dirt & was rather beat up when I got it from the junk yard. I cleaned it up & installed it, after hooking up the wires. I then took the car for a drive to see how the radio sounded going down the road. It sounds pretty good, but would probably sound better if I had good speakers in the car. The ones in the car are just cheapy speakers from The Andersons General Store. Dad bought the rears for Christmas one year & I bought the fronts.
When I get home I plan on posting the pics I took of the car today.
Here are some pics. Once I get more resized I will be posting more.
Matt,
It looks like Harold II is coming right along. Keep up the good work!
Dwayne
Thanks Dwayne, I hope she does good when I take her for a nice drive this next Sunday. I might even take her to a car show.
Nice vintage door panels there Matty! lol.
LOL.... those door panels actually look good in that pic but they are shot. I'm glad the car is looking pretty good though. Now to take care of checking the brakes & making sure all is good with them before I drive her this weekend.
The ones I got from Fred are destined to be wall art! ;D I think I'll collect all the colors of the Deluxe Pony door panels. I don't care if they have rips even! ;D
Sounds cool Becky!! If my door panels would survive I would send them to ya. They are so far shot they won't come off the car in one piece. I'm just glad to get the car driveable once again. I am going to drive the car to a freeway exit that is about 20 minutes away from my dad's.
Be safe! ;D

What??? You're not getting
on the freeway? Where is your sense of adventure? :surprised: As Becky said,"be safe."
Dwayne
Oh yeah.... On the freeway & going fast lmao. I think she will like to get her insides rumbling. After I do complete the tests I am going to change the oil & filter. I haven't driven that many miles since changing it but I wanna make sure it's good & clean for the drive.
She passed the test today!!!!!!
I got her insured & registered & was able to take her for a test drive. I went ahead & drove to my grandma's house, which is 20 miles away from home. Not only did she drive well, but she got 27 mpg! I did have a small issue with the car though. I was driving on the freeway, when the speedometer stopped working. I left it alone for a while but got off the freeway, removed the radio, & reconnected it. I noticed it was loose since the clip was broken, so I went ahead & took a pair of pliers & bent the outside, so it clamps down on the speedo end. It held tight & hasn't come off again, yet. Hopefully that will be taken care of, while I wait for a new cable.
Next test is a bigger trip. That is soon to come.
YAY!!! YAY!!! GO MATTY!
:fastcar: :fastcar: :fastcar:
Nothing is quite so exhilarating as a successful test run! Congratulations!!!
Dwayne
Congratulations Matt! :D
I can't wait to take Brownie for a test run with the new transmission and distributor. Hopefully she still gets good gas mileage! :)
You've got my adrenalin pumping to get Brownie back on the road again! :D
Thanks guys!
Dave, you are quite right. Nothing like a little patience & good news about someone else's Pinto to put you in the mood to work on getting your own back on the road. I was not motivated for the past year & after getting back on the site I read so many stories of people getting theirs going, that I decided to do the same. Now my own is registered & insured for the first time in almost a year.
This time I kept her insured & registered... Good thing too, as she seems to get better traction in the winter than my 2004 Malibu Maxx. While it's gonna zoop not having power everything or V6 power, I think I need traction more.
Looks like she is going to get driven once I replace the rear brakes, not to mention get some better wipers on her. The ones on her are crap. They look good for car shows but the frames are ancient, so they don't hold the windshield like they should.
Well,
It is cold & slick out & my 2004 Malibu Maxx likes to go sliding, so I have decided to park her & drive the Pinto for a while. I am going to see if the brake issue is just some rust that needs knocked off. She gets better mileage than the Malibu anyways, so it's all good.
Well, I am driving her for now. Where the Malibu doesn't like the cold because she has too much power, the Pinto doesn't like the cold because she is carburated. I am so used to just getting in turning the key & driving away, but I cannot do that with Harold II. Even after only sitting for a couple hours she pops & backfires until she is warmed up! I think part is a bad float but I'm not sure.
Looks like something nice to get into & fix
Couldn't help but smile at that comment, Matt. It's a generational thing! I remember the first car I had with electronic fuel injection (a new 1981 Lincoln Town Car which was my 10th car overall)... I had the hardest time with getting into the car and just turning the ignition switch to start it! I had to train my foot to stay OFF the accelerator pedal (actually it was my slow brain I had to train, I guess). It was SO hard! The exact reverse of the problem you're having now!
Dwayne
Funny you say that Dwayne... When I was growing up all the cars my parent's had were carbureted, including the 1985 Chevy Celebrity they had. For granted it was a computer controlled carb, but none the less, still a carb & had to be treated the same as any other carb.. My first car, a 1986 Ford Tempo with 2.3 CFI... Fuel injection, but was so primitive for 1986 you had to treat it like a carb. It wasn't until my 86 Olds Calais I enjoyed real fuel injection. Heck, the way my Dad's 1993 Taurus ran you had to treat it like a carbed car until I fixed the bad fuel pump lol. Until recent he still pumped the gas on his 2004 Impala.
I'm not entirely sure why, but my 78's 2.3l with the stock Holley 5200 has never needed the gas pedal pumped unless it's sat for more than 3 or 4 days. I just step on the pedal once to engage the choke and turn the key. After it turns over once or twice it starts right up.
My 73 station wagon with the "same" type carb on the other hand, has to be pumped so many times it's not even funny. However, I haven't completely disassembled and cleaned it's carb like I have my 78s, yet.
She is my daily driver at the moment! The Malibu Maxx does not like the snow, so I have parked her in favor of driving the Pinto.
The heat works alright, the radio sucks & she has no power but she is paid for & wanting to go.
As for the brakes, turns out it was rust from sitting, as they no longer lock up. The drums were used when I installed them so I may want to get new ones eventually but for now they are fine.
The carb died...
It started leaking pretty well from a brass plug I previously repaired. I am throwing in the towel on that carb & getting a rebuild kit for the old one. I will then retune it get her running right. I miss my car :'(
Got the old carb off the car & tore it apart & found nothing but problems....
The float was bad, it was leaking from every seal possible, the accelerator pump was leaking, the needle that goes under the float was MIA completely, with some odd piece in there, with no clip to keep the float in place for the float drop.
No wonder I was having issues with pickup, maintaining speed & everything else.
I am rebuilding the original carb & am going to have a spare that I am buying from Fred.
More soon.
I am getting ready to hang the new doors on Harold II. I just got all the gaskets I will need from ebay... Window sweeps, door seals, & new window guides. Once they come in I can install the doors & have a dry interior on the car.
I was working on the car quite a bit today. I went ahead & pulled the interior panels & seats from the car so I could paint them blue. I also went ahead & installed a brand new RCA 8 track FM radio I bought off ebay. It had the plugs for a GM, so rather cut the GM plugs off & have a problem finding Ford connectors I went ahead & got some GM radio plugs from the junkyard. So far so good.
Without further delay here are a couple pics of some of the work I have done to the car.
Cool authentic retro kitsch radio! :afro:
Thanks! It would sound better with better speakers but for now it will do.
I finally did it!! I have been wanting to replace the front seats with some from a Tempo/Topaz & I finally got a pair for the car. While I wanted blue they were hard to come by so I settled on grey. On the Tempo/Topaz the common color is either red or grey, with Blue or tan being hard to come by. Oh well, better grey seats than the worn out seats in the car with crappy seat covers on them. The driver side bolster needs sewn up but that's not too bad, as I have done that before lol. I have to fab up a bracket to make the passenger side fit but the driver side fits with almost no issues.
Here are some pics of them as of yet.
I am also thinking of modding the rear seat back of the Tempo/Topaz & using the seat bottom from a set of front buckets from a Tempo/Topaz to go in the back, so I have a uniform look. We will see if my idea will work, but I think it will. It's amazing what you will think of when you have a few 16 oz beers in your system lmao.
Those should make for a nice upgrade, and the gray will look just fine in a blue car, once Harold II is painted!
Dwayne
Thanks Dwayne! I actually made the appointment for 5/16. I will be taking her to Maaco on 5/15 & deciding on the color then. In the mean time I am doing all the body & interior work I can do. Gotta work on them doors some tonight, & get the new shocks I got off ebay on the front. Then go over the rear brakes & while I have the rear in the air I am going to fix the rear leaf & replace the rear shocks as well. She should drive a lot better then. ;D
I did the mod to the Tempo passenger seat & it is going according to plan. The problem I was running in to was the hump for the convertor was in the way. Rather than take a hammer to the car & make it fit as is I took a sheet of 22 gauge sheet metal & fabricated a bracket to move the passenger left bracket over about three inches on the seat. I bolted it up & it works great! I still need to trim the metal & mod the spring cover for the seat but no problem with that. Those are minor issues, as the seat will bolt right up & look great. The driver seat just needs to have one hole drilled for the floor, as the seat brackets moved over about an inch on that side.
Pics to come soon!
Got an appointment to get the car painted a week from now & got 4 tires ordered from tire discounters for $300.00! The car is going to be ready one way or another... Even if it means late nights. Currently I have half the car sanded back down to the original colors. I say colors, as I replaced the hood & RF fender at one point, so the original car color is medium saddle metallic, the RF fender is a mint green, & the hood is dark blue. Not too much sanding & filling, then the car will be ready for paint.
Sounds like you're going to have Harold II all spiffed up just in time for Carlisle. Looking forward to seeing you there!
Dwayne
Literally just in time Dwayne... I am even thinking of installing speakers in the doors. I just can't stand not being able to listen to the music while driving with the window's open. I did get the passenger seat in the car today& am going to work on modding a bracket for the driver seat tomorrow.
The front seats are all bolted in!! I made a bracket for the driver side as well, since if I moved the bolt holes on the left I woulda drilled right through a brake line & gas line. Not good. The install went alright though, & the bolster even sewed up nicely.
Hey Matt,
They look pretty good in there!
Dwayne
The car went to Maaco last night. I had her all sanded down to the original colors & removed everything I could from the car. The only things that were on there were the headlights, wipers, & driver door handle. She looks very ugly right now but the end result will be worth it. I will post before & after pics, but only after I get the car back together. The mystery continues lol.

You're right, Matt... there are few things less attractive than a car that has been sanded, stripped of its trimwork, and prepped for painting! I had my '79 Collector's Series Lincoln taken down to bare metal when we painted it and it was NOT a pretty sight. As you predicted however, the end result was well worth it! Can't wait to see Harold II!
Dwayne
Exciting news!!!!!
My Dad was working across the street from Maaco, so he stopped in there to see how things are coming with the car. He told me the driver door that was all dented up bigtime looks like it was never damaged at all! He told me they were sanding the car, getting ready for the color... I CAN'T WAIT!!!!!!!!!! ;D ;D ;D
I can't wait to see it Matt ;D

Fantastic! Are you going to post photos, or keep us in suspense until Carlisle?
Dwayne
Suspense until the official unveiling at Carlisle. Then I will be posting the pics on the site after Friday. I am gonna print off pics & put them on a poster in a frame, to show the pics of when I bought the car, when I got her ready for paint, & after paint. It's all in my head, so I just gotta do it.

Oh it will be worth it! The car is oh, so shiney!! lol
When are you planning to arrive in Carlisle? I'm going to meet up with the Stampede at the Flight 93 Memorial on Thursday, June 2nd and follow them in.
Dwayne
June 3rd. I work June 2nd, so I won't be able to leave until after I get off work then. My dad & I are going to go so far June 2nd, then finish the trip June 3rd.

I'll be there all day Friday, but have to return home Friday night because my son's high school graduation is Saturday. Can't miss that! I'll be back in Carlisle on Sunday morning. Looking forward to finally meeting you!

It will be nice to see you too Dwayne... I might be having a mini-unveiling on May 30th. There is a car show at a Hooters about 20 minutes away from me, so if I get her all back together I will be taking her to that car show. I don't care if I get any awards or not but it would be cool if she did at the first car show since the repaint.

;) Hehe ;)
The interior is all back together, she runs great & just needs a few mechanicals done for the trip. I did have to take the driver side mirror back off the car because for reasons not even known to Maaco for whatever reason they taped off the bottom of the mirror & it wasn't painted. The mgr felt bad about that when I went to get the car Saturday, so they told me if I bring the mirror in they will get it painted. No harm, no foul, as accidents happen from time to time. My Dad is going to drop the mirror to Maaco tomorrow after he gets off work.
Carlisle went great! The car did alright, aside from getting pulled over for a headlight that went out after I left the house, exhaust that kept falling, & a bad ball joint. I took some pics of the car & will get them posted, as well as some of her at Carlisle. As for the balljoint I had been given one by a nice guy at Carlisle & was going to install it, but found out the entire front suspension is shot. All the bushings are dry rotted & the upper ball joints are also showing age. Just to be safe I got a front suspension kit from ebay, as well as new coil springs that will be getting installed. I previously replaced the tie rod ends, so after I get these parts on she should feel good & tight up front. As for the rear I bought a pair of leaf springs from sedandelivery when at Carlisle & will be installing those, as well as a pair of nearly new rear shocks. With all those parts the car will handle fantastic! When I have the funds I will be getting the sway bar installed, since I have to get the links for it. The bar came from my 78 parts car & has been sitting since.
Pics to come soon!
Pics of the car!!!
a couple more pics.

Thanks Scott, Makes it all worthwhile to hear the compliments.
It was great seeing you again too.
Matt, you car lived up to expectations and looks great, hats off to a job well done.
Thanks Brian,
The next step is to tackle the suspension. A couple years ago I bought a couple lower control arms off ebay but never installed them. I have gone ahead & installed the new ball joints on the lower control arms & am getting ready to install the bushings in them as well. While I have the lowers off I will be installing new coil springs, upper ball joints & control arm bushings, as well as replacing the strut rod bushings. Of course new shocks going on the car. I'm also going to redo the rear suspension. Rear leaf springs & shocks are coming to the back.
I did go ahead & install one shock last week & noticed the old one still held pressure. I was shocked, but they were showing their age. It had pressure but not as much as the new ones I bought off ebay.
The car has been sitting on the street for about 2 weeks since I couldn't find the keys to her. I found them a couple days ago & moved the car in front of my house, just to pi$$ off my neighbor's oldest son. My dad decided to start parking in front of the house after the neighbor's son parked in front of the house on trashday, causing us to have to put the trash outside the rental house next door. I got the keys, jumpered the solenoid & moved the car. This weekend I plan on getting a toggle switch & some wire to run in the car so I don't have to pop the hood to get the car to start. This is just a temporary measure, but will work until I get to the junkyard to get a neutral safety switch for her. I'm also gonna get the rear leaf springs & shocks on the car, so she will be ready for the Ohio Pinto meet in September.
Well I got the starter button hooked up so I no longer need to pop the hood to start the car. I ran two wires from under the hood into the interior & hooked them up to the starter solenoid. I did have an accident with the starter solenoid & had to replace it with my backup unit. I was using a nut on the S terminal stud but it was the wrong thread. Instead of cross threading the nut or stud it cracked the solenoid. Oh well, it will work for now. I am going to mount up the switch below the radio using one of the screws for the radio bezel & a mounting bracket fabricated out of some scrap metal.
Is it necessarily the right way to fix the problem? No... that would be replacing the neutral safety switch, but it will work for now.
Got the driver side leaf spring installed today. Dad & I were working hard on getting that taken care of since the old one was busted up really bad. The driver side rear tire was not centered in the wheel well & it was suspected to be due to a rear leaf spring installed backwards. Well, that was not the case. The spring was so broken that while it was not moving freely the axle had no way to be centered when installed. Got the rear leaf spring installed on the driver side & it took care of the problem. Now I just need to replace the passenger side spring & replace both shocks. Then the car will drive better. Soon it will be my daily driver as the Malibu Maxx fuel pump issue is back with a vengence. Before long she prolly won't be starting or running so I gotta get the Pinto road worthy.
Haven't really done much to the car since September but recently I was having to drive the car after my 08 Grand Prix was in the shop for some warranty tranny work. I was driving the car for a bit when the brake light fuse blew. I think it's a shorting wire in the steering column so once it warms up I'm gonna give it a whirl to fix it. The car is loud & fires right up but doesn't have brakes. Once it warms up I'm gonna take care of the suspension, exhaust & electrical issues. Such a good car. 32 years old & keeps on trucking.
Well, since it was a warm day I went ahead & dropped the steering column to find the culprit of the short. Two wires were crushed by the steering column & eventually wore through & shorted each other out. When the turn signal switch went bad I got one that had a longer harness & just crammed the crap out of it so I could make it work. It did for a while but apparently I pinched a couple wires when I bolted up the column & the rest is history. I had kept the old one in case I ever got motivated to shorten the harness & well, I sorta had to in order to keep from having another short. I got the turn signal harness all shortened up to match the original equipment harness, cut out the bad wires & soldered in new ones & put everything back in place. The final test was the hazzard flashers & brake lights. No more blown fuses!
Next in line is to try to fix the exhaust so I can drive the car tomorrow. The Grand Prix doesn't get the gas mileage the Pinto does so I wanna get it all fixed so I can drive the car. We'll see what happens.
Here's hoping you're driving her today! :D

It didn't happen. It kept raining & with the funeral showing I was going to there just wasn't any time. I ws disappointed since I planned on driving her in the funeral, but what can you do.
2 1/2 weeks to Carlisle & now I'm feeling it!!! Haven't had the energy or motivation to work on the car so I am forced to cram a lot of work in a short time. Oh well, I can do it.
Anyways, I recently went to the junkyard for a part for my friends car when I found a Mustang II. I got the silver wiper arms & air cleaner tube at the time & will be going back Wednesday to get the power brake booster & master cylinder. By the end of the week this car will have power brakes! Next step is power steering. & floors. I have some of the parts but not all of them. Either way this car is a big pain in the butt. I have a lot of welding to do & I dunno how to do that. I need floors so very bad & am going to figure out what I need to do it.

you will need the brake pedal and mounting too... I'm not sure what all is involved in this conversion but you may want to wait until after Carlisle unless you are aware and have everything ready for the swap. Hate to see you miss Carlisle because you got stuck in the middle of a project and not able to complete in time.
That's a good idea Brian. If anything I will get the parts now & install them afterwards. Not gonna miss Carlisle for nothing!
Went to the junkyard to get the parts from the Mustang II but had nothing but problems. First problem was getting in the car. Apparently the damage on the driver side was so bad it jammed the door shut. Once I got in it I found I didn't have the right sockets or wrenches to remove anything. Apparently the car has standard fasteners & no metric fasteners. Wierd how my 77 Pinto had a mixture & the 78 Mustang II doesn't seem to. Gonna go back Saturday to go after the parts.
I did go ahead & remove the front panels on the car. Last year when I had the car repainted it looked good but a few months later the headlight buckets were flaking badly. I went ahead & removed them, as well as the bumper filler & will be taking them to Maaco to have them redone. Can't have the car looking like crap for Carlisle. While the buckets are off I'm gonna go ahead & remove the left front fender so I can take care of the insane door gap at the back. Never had it right so now it will be right.
No front end.
matt
off topic but what part of ohio are you in??
im orginally from cleveland area.
I'm from the Columbus area. Been living in Reynoldsburg for the past 18 years.
thats funnt my wife is from bexley!!
miss the roads up there but not the weather!!
well if im up in for thanksgiving will be at ford swap meet! might meet you then
eric
LOL that sounds cool. I try to go to that every year, although I forgot about it last year until two days after the fact.
Now for an update... I have taken the headlight buckets & bumper filler off the car & took them in to Maaco to be reshot. When the car was painted last year the paint stuck pretty good but it started to flake off. From what I could tell a flexible additive wasn't used. No harm, no foul. better to take care of it now.
Aside from that I went to the junkyard today & was able to get the power brake set up from the 78 Mustang II. I got everything I needed, including master cylinder, brake booster, & brake pedal. I also got the proportioning valve & found out that won't need changed. Kinda irritating when you get the part & find out it's the same exact part number as the one on the car. Oh well, at least I have a spare to throw in the parts bin. I also got the neutral safety switch, alternator bracket for the power steering set up & vbelts. They were almost new & have no cracking at all & for only 99 cents each!
Well I removed the old speedometer cable & neutral safety switch & both were shot. The plastic center post on the neutral safety switch was gone altogether, which let the sp& apparently rusted in the housing that when I spun the gear it was to stiff & hard to rotate that I think this was causing the issue with the inaccurate speedometer reading. Having an issue with getting the plug on the neutral safety switch. Just a very tight area so it's being a little tough to plug it in. Now I am also still waiting for the parts to be finished by Maaco. For whatever reason they are having issues with the paint. It keeps getting fisheyes & they are not sure why. If the parts are not done my Tuesday heads will roll since I am going to Carlisle on Thursday.
The exhaust is fixed!!!! It took two adapters & a couple nuts & bolts but the exhaust is finally up in place for the first time in a long long while. No dragging or anything! Carlisle here I come!
Hey Matt!
I like the updated picture of Harold II - much more indicative of what she looks like now! Have a great time in Carlisle!
Dwayne :)
Thanks Dwayne! I wanted a pic with the similar stance of the old one & got around to changing it. There will be no getting pulled over by WV cops this year. The headlights work & the car is quiet lol.
I do need to go to NAPA in the morning to get me another headlight adjuster screw. One of the ones I bought on ebay before decided to break when I was trying to adjust the light, so it's now pointing to the center, like it did before. Oh well, no harm no foul. I am also going to change the oil & go to Maaco to get the parts. If they are not done this time then I will have their heads on a pole. If I have to drive the car with no front end to Carlisle I will but I will be very very pissed if I do.
I am afraid the project is at an end.. The car is just too rusty underneath to save. The car has severe rust to the floor, wheel wells, right leaf spring shock mount, firewall rust.. The car is too far gone for me to continue trying to fix this car. With that being said I won't be able to save the car. There comes a time when you realize that some things cannot be saved and this car is definitely one of them. I will be looking for a replacement car for Harold II and when I find one I will swap out all the usable parts before junking the shell.
Sad, sad day for me & the car. I hate to end a project when it is not finished but in this case I don't have a choice.
Aww Matt, that is sad news indeed. But the rust you describe sounds so thoroughly complete that it most likely is the best move. Best of luck in finding a suitable replacement!
Matt,
It is a sad day, indeed... but best of luck in your search for Harold III.
Dwayne :)
I feel your pain. I ran into ther exact same problem with my '78 sedan. The rust was everywhere once the fenders came off & it's not worth saving. I need most of the parts off the car anyhow including the clean floorpans so it won't die for nothing. It will live on having provided everything needed to finish my '80 & '73 both.
Thanks guys. It is frustrating bigtime but nothing that can be done about that. All I will do in this case is drive it & enjoy it while I still can & once I find a replacement I will pull everything from this car & put it in the new one. The only thing that will be left is the worn out parts & rust. I would like my next Pinto to be a wagon but I won't rule anything out. The only thing I am looking for is a Pinto with a good body & floor 74-80. Then I can make it looking similar to what Harold II is.
Gotta look at one good thing... All the parts I have put on the car & some I didn't will be pulled off the car, so when it goes to the junkyard it will be going as just a shell. Anything I can salvage will be pulled off. Then I will be taking pics of the car to show how badly rusted the car is. I will even pull the windshield & save that since mine is in good condition & they are at a premium anymore.
Looks like the car gets a slight reprieve from death. Harold II still has almost 3/4 tank of gas & the Pontiac gets crappy mileage. With that said I will be driving Harold II around for the rest of the week & some next week after I fix my brakes. Seems silly to fix them now but I gotta fix them to drive her. I think she really is dying. The car has had an unidentifiable clunk from the rear of the car. Not gonna fix it at this point. No point since it doesn't seem to affect how she drives.
The end is really near.
Well Harold II is still around, hanging on to every last breath but probably not much longer. My Grand Prix is costing me way too much in gas so I gassed up Harold II to drive to work. I been hearing clunking & creaking from the car & today while driving the car to work I heard something hit the underside of the car on the freeway. Only thing is there was nothing on the road, leading me to think something has fallen off the car. I'm beginning to wonder about the safety of this car with all the noises. I have got to get that 1980 runabout back on the road so I can retire this car before something serious happens. I was gonna take the car on one last trip to the Ohio meet but now I seriously doubt the car will have many more trips to work left in her. The drive is getting rougher and rougher so I know something has gone wrong. The drive to Carlisle was fairly smooth but the 25 mile drive to work has gotten very rough on a section of freeway that has given me a very smooth ride in other cars.
No more odd noises & the ride has smoothed out on the car. It's driving alright for now so i will be driving the 77 to the Ohio Pinto meet. I been driving it to work for two weeks now & aside from the shower I get from the leaky windshield gasket the car is doing pretty well. Now that I decide to part out the car she decides to do better. Figures.
Stay tuned for possible updates. I just can't bring myself to scrap this car. I'm gonna save the floor that was gonna be used to fix the 77 & see what I can do to save her. I have thought about this long and hard and I just can't do it. While I would probably be better off getting rid of this car altogether I just can't do it.
I am gonna save this car, one way or another. When I get done I will have two nice Pintos. I dunno, maybe it was driving the car that made me wanna save her but save her I will. Harold II will not die!!
With that being said I am trying to get a transmission to replace the one that just went out this past Friday. I can't complain, as I only paid 20 bucks for it & after driving around 2k miles I definitely got my moneys worth.
Good thing I planned on replacing the transmission on the car. Today I drove the car around the block so I could move it to the driveway & the car wouldn't shift out of first. I would hit the gas & the car would move but it didn't wanna shift at all, and when I backed off the gas it seemed more like it was idling than in gear. About 3/4 around the block it started to slip. If I was in doubt the transmission was bad before I am sure now. Friday I get paid and will be going to a local junk yard that has one from a 1976 Pinto for only $75.00. I will be getting it & installing it in the car. The old one will be eventually torn down & rebuilt to have as a spare for Harold II or the 1980.
Matt,
Like you said, you might be better off getting rid of Harold II altogether, but I'm happy to hear that you've scrapped that idea rather than scrapping the car. I've somehow always felt that there was a little more life in Harold II than you were giving her credit for. Congratulations on the decision to keep her. Sorry that you missed the Ohio get-together... your luck runs about the same direction as mine, I think! Good luck and hang in there!
Dwayne :)
Thanks Dwayne,
What got me thinking of saving Harold II was when I was talking to my dad about the floor a week or so ago & he came right out & said you never know I might be able to fix it. That really got me thinking about it. We were talking about it after I started driving the car to work since it got so much better gas mileage than my 08 Pontiac. 26mpg for a 35 yr old car with messed up carb isn't too shabby at all lol.
I now have to get the transmission replaced since I gotta drive this car to & from work. Hard to do with no working tranny. Getting the car running solid underneath will make it all worth while. It also means I gotta fix the leaky windshield instead of leaving it but I don't mind. I just wanna keep enjoying the car.
Not having much luck looking for a transmission for my car. The one that was really close to me has been sold. Looks like it is time to park the 77 for the time being.
Matty, do you know anyone who can rebuild that one for a decent price? (don't go to Aamco- they gipped me when I had my transmission in my ((at the time)) '82 Mercury Capri "reconditioned" for almost $1,000 in '98. ) >:(
No I'm afraid not. The problem I got is I can't afford to have it rebuilt & don't have a place to do it myself. I do plan on keeping the old one & rebuilding it eventually once the garage is reorganised but in the mean time I gotta do what I can to get Harold II back on the road.
Wish we were closer to help with your car, matt.
Hey I've got what appears to be a freshly rebuilt c3 that you can have to get Harold back on the road. The only problem is I'm in Mississippi. You figure out how to ship it it's yours. Brent
When I bought my 76 2 door a few months ago it included most of the original drivetrain (2.3 w/c3) I'm doing a small v8 install 289(sorta) but who cares about those kinda details??? The guy had the tranny in his shop on a shelf under a blanket. It is super clean, tork converter and seals look brand new.
I've decided to let the car die. :'( It's too terminal and been on life support long enough. Once the 1980 is out of major surgery the 77 will be driven in to the driveway one last time, to begin her organ doning.
The more I thought about it, it is a matter of safety & the car just isn't very safe to drive anymore. It needs a transmission, major structure repair, rear quarter repair, door repair, LF fender repair, as well as some interior work.
After looking at my priorities and realising what is important, saving a major rust bucket isn't among them. It would cost me around 3-4k alone in rust repairs just to get the car to where it is safe & rot free. This decision has not been an easy one to make but I feel it is the best one in the case of this car.
I know how you feel. I tried to find a way to save my '77 sedan for 2 years. It was just too far gone to save so it's being stripped clean to save my other 3. Same for my '76 wagon. I started assessing it & realized the body had too much damage to save so I got a '74 wagon shell to replace it. At least I can drive it while I get the new body ready to replace it.
We can't save 'em all......
atleast you guys are using them to save more then one car!!

You got that right. The rear bumper on the 80 is in bad shape so for now I am thinking of using the 77s bumpers, engine going in the 80, exhaust will go on the 80 & whatever other parts I have will be either sold off or kept as spares for the 80. Don't wanna do it but have come to terms with the issue.
The parting out of the car will soon start. Once I get the 80 running I will take the wheels & tires from the 77 & put them on the 80. Whatever I don't keep for the 80 will be put up for sale or scrapped.
One thing is for sure... I WILL NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES sell the entire car. I got new parts on there I need to pull and the car is no longer safe to be driven or fixed. If it were I would be fixing it.
How goes the parting out, Matt? Is the 80 running after the fire?
Haven't touched either yet. Been working my tail off & now they're covered in snow. Once I rebuild the head on the 80 the car will be close to running.
Hey Matt, is the 77 a hatch back? I need an interior corner trim for a rear deck on my 2 door (coupe)
Mine is the sedan. Are you referring to the plastic piece that is above the rear seat back at the top on the side of the package tray? If so I will sell them to you for $15 plus shipping. That price is for both sides.
The parting out of the car will be starting soon. Not much time left in this old rusty relic. Gonna drive the car to storage so I don't get a ticket for having an unregistered car on the street. Once the 80 is running & driving then I will take the tires off it & put them on the 80.
Hey Matt, I'll take them! Let me know your PayPal info I'll send you some$$$. My email is Brent@duckworthrealty.com thanks!
PM sent!
I been thinking & thinking, and I can't believe what I'm about to say, but I'm considering once I get the engine & transmission put in the 80 to get it on the road, gutting the thing and seeing just how bad the rust is. I must be a big idiot cuz the whole reason to get the 80 was to replace the rusty 77. But after 10 years I can't bring myself to get rid of it. :-[
You're not an idiot, Matt... far from it! You are a Pinto addict!
Dwayne :)
What makes me an idiot is the sad Dodge Omni GLHT sitting in storage needing all four tires new turbocharger and roof and hood sanded and primered for the time being and here I am not wanting to scrap my 77 pinto

But yes I am one. If it wasn't a sedan and ties me to my mom and her 73 sedan then I prolly wouldn't feel this way

Well, we all have our reasons. My most basic affinity for Pintos dates back to 1974 when, at sixteen, I bought a brand new Runabout. It was my first car and is a huge part of my history. The Pinto I have right now is a '72 Squire wagon, much like the '72 Squire my mom drove back and forth to work back in the day. Her Squire was later replaced by a '77 Bobcat Villager which proved itself to be something of a lemon (gasp!) and that was soon traded back in on a '79 Bobcat Runabout. So I have family ties as well as personal. Follow your heart.

Dwayne :)
Which is the big problem I have. My head says cut it up & get rid of it. My heart says one last ditch effort to see exactly how bad the cancer is.
So my plan is to go ahead and still pull the engine and transmission from the 77, and put them in the 80. That car is in much better shape and needs an engine to run. I will be rebuilding the transmission from the 77 more than likely, as it has no 3rd gear, and occasionally no second. Unless I can replace it cheaper. I will cross that bridge when I get there. I will pull the wiring from the engine compartment, and take a closer look at the rust in it. I will also proceed to pull the windshield, and interior. Now, before I do all of this I will need to get my shed fixed, so I can lock up the body parts. The seats will stay in the garage or possibly go inside the storage in my house. Once I gut the interior I will have a better idea of what needs to be done to save this car. If anything I can practice my welding skills on her.
The end of the project has come. The car has been pulled in the garage, hood removed, grille removed, and started to remove engine parts. It's a sad moment for me but needs to happen. I don't have the time or money to save this car. Rust at the firewall, entire floor gone except for the transmission tunnel, rust possibly around the windshield, rusted out corners of the core support, around the trunk panel, wheel wells, area around leaf spring perch, passenger door, front fender, and possibly rocker panel. It's just not financially advisable, and not safe.
Yesterday I took the car for one last drive, although only around the block. The car fired right up with the push of a button, and other than a misfire at idle due to a vacuum leak the car ran well. I put Skynyrd in the 8 track player and parked in the garage. Towards the end of Freebird it quit working. Put Kenny Rodgers in and it worked a moment but that was it. The horn also quit working. It's as if the car knew her time had come. Sad moment that I will admit brought a tear to my eye. I've had so much time and money invested in this car that I bought 5/7/05. It has been transformed from an ugly brown turd of a car with worn out tan interior to a beautiful shade of blue but not knowing how bad the structure was turned out to be my biggest issue. Realistically I should have looked more underneath the car before I considered it. Had I done that & seen the galvanized aluminum and pop rivets on the driver side I would have passed on it.
This has been a very hard decision to make but I know it's the right one, for a car with no structure is not a safe car.
I will be gutting the car, and what doesn't get used on the 80 or put in my parts collection will be sold off.
Get a mortgage & buy my white car ;D
Much cheaper than Shelby's 001 car that just went for 13.8m !

LOL already got a mortgage and with an 80 Pinto, 04 Impala, and 85 Omni Turbo I got too many cars as it is.
Matt.
The car IS fixable to be safe to drive for years to come. Many Mustangs (mainly from the 60's) have been brought back from worse.
However, at the point this one is at it generally isn't worth the work and the cost. Odds are a Pinto will never be worth Mustang money.
If this WAS your mom's car, then I would say keep it and fix it a little at a time. But since it isn't go ahead and let it go. Which it sounds like you already are doing.

Yup, I got the engine yanked from the car today. I know what you're saying and yes it would be fixable but when it comes to the point where there is more rot than anything you have to ask is it worth throwing away any more money? I don't know how to weld, and the car needs more than I can give. The 1980 I have is far from perfect but more is good on it than bad. I'm going to be pulling the brakes off it since the ones on the 80 are gone and will go from there as to what can be used before getting that thing hauled to the scrapper
Understood.
Like I said, probably not worth it unless that specific car means something to you, like if it was your mom's car.
Before you have it hauled away, I would take as much as possible off of it. Every nut, bolt, bracket, etc. Anything not rusted away. Assuming you have the storage that is. Glass too. Dash, panels, etc.
Really, everything possible. You never know when you might need something.
Russ
Yup that's the plan. Wiring, nuts, bolts... Anything I can save and store will be saved.

RIP Harold II... 1977- 8/20/16.
I pulled the engine 8/21/16 but started taking parts off 8/20/16. The car will live on in the un-named 1980. It still saddens me to see how the car is currently in my garage. Today I will drain the gas from the tank so I can take the fuel sending unit and use it on the 1980, as well as fuel lines. Next will be pulling the brakes, including the line going to the back of the car. I replaced the wheel cylinder and line going over the axle in 2012 so I will take those parts, as well as all the springs which were replaced when I bought the car in 2006.
Call me crazy but once I get the 80 back on the road I will remove everything from the interior & take pics of the car. I want to see just how rusty this car is. Who knows, maybe I can use it for welding practice before I weld on my nicer 1980. I just can't bring myself to let her go. I'm so torn but if I can experiment with welding & it be solid then we'll see. I know I should let her die completely but who knows
OK, you're crazy. :P
Well, you said to. ;D
Seriously, that is a good plan. At worst, you will have learned how to weld on a rusty car. At best, you save a car. If needed, you can always get rid of it later on.
Me, I am stupid. I have to replace the floors on my Ranchero, and I won't be practicing first. That's the reason I am a lousy bass player. I hate practicing. I figure by the time I get done I should have a clue.
Speaking of clues, I took a 3 hour evening welding course last year. Mig. I have a flux core, sigh. But what I learned was to not try to run a bead at this point. Just do "spot" welds, rotating around the patch. That way there is almost no chance for warping the metal. So quick spot weld on one side, move to the next side, continue. Eventually they will form a solid weld. Once they get fairly close (like an inch or so apart) you can run a bead between them, starting in the first and ending in the second weld.
Russ
One thing is for sure.... Between Ohio winters & time in Georgia she lived a rough life. Figure I don't know what I can do until I try. Might just surprise myself & get it safe. Then play musical engines lol
Well, you really have very little to lose by trying and much to gain. Here's wishing you the best of luck!
Dwayne :)
Thanks. I figure Once the 80 is back on the road I will pull the interior & see what it looks like. Since there is no engine I will know more of what is too far gone. If I can save it then I will collect parts to fix the car since some of the parts are going to fix the 80.
This is it... The OFFICIAL ending to the 77. I just now had to take off the RF rotor, caliper, and brake hose to use on the 1980 Runabout. The list of parts to scalp to put on the 77 is getting much to big. In addition I was under the car and found the inner structure of the RF was much worse than I thought. There is a major hole under the battery tray, seam that goes from the wheel well to the body is gone, and fire wall seam rusted beyond repair. In order to save this car I would have to pull everything including the dash board just to get access to the rust damage. It's not worth the time and more importantly the money that would be needed to save this car. I will be pulling the transmission which will be rebuilt and saved as a spare just in case the 1980s C4 fails, RF brake assembly already yanked with the 1980s bad rotor installed. I will pull the seats and clean them. Eventually I might dye them and put them in the 80 since the fabric on the 80 seats are a little worn in places. The radio will be kept for a future Pinto of the era. 8 track unit. I haven't decided but I might transplant the nose from the 77 to the 80 since I like that look better.
Parts needed to save the 77:
Front brakes, extensive sheet metal repair to all 4 wheel wells, patch panels to the rear quarters, possible rust repair to windshield pillar due to possible hole, firewall rust cut out & welded, exhaust repair including manifold, instrument cluster (sold the original a couple years back), new shifter assembly to replace the one being scalped for the 80, battery tray, battery hold down, LF fender, RF door, interior door panels, carpet, speakers, rear axle.
Yes, I have put a lot of money in this car and will NEVER recoup it but to throw away good after bad would be a waste of money, and plain dumb. My 80 is far from perfect, but in much better shape.
I am officially at peace with the decision. I love the sedan. It's my favorite behind the wagon, with the Runabout last and least favorite, but comes a time you say enough is enough. I've hit that moment.
With that said, Her final certificate of death.... 5/1977- 10/13/ 2016. Date of ownership: 4/28/05-current. First found the car September 2004 before I bought my first which was a 1978 Runabout with bad engine and rot issues.
RIP Harold II
Matt,
I know it's hard to let go, but sometimes there just isn't any other logical choice. Harold II did not die without a good fight! I find it interesting that you prefer the sedan. I've owned all three body styles and the Runabout is, by far, my favorite. Oh well... different strokes for different folks!
Dwayne :)
Yeah she didn't die without a fight although her heart doesn't wanna live thanks to the 1980 curse

I did forget to mention the rusted out radiator core support corners and rusted out trunk corners. I dunno why but I never was a fan of the hatchback. Even when I bought the 1978. Oh well she will live on in the 1980. Her side marker bulbs already got installed in the 1980 since those didn't work and turn signal flasher installed in place of the dead one

Sorry to hear about the death of the 77 but it does happen, time to move on best of luck with the 80.

Well crap I put this on the wrong car post

The car was picked up this morning by the new owners. Glad to have it gone to someone who will be able to either use the parts from it, or possibly fix it. Bitter sweet but beyond time.
I did manage to save the brake caliper and rotor from the right front, front brake hoses, exhaust, stereo, wiper delay I previously installed, driver door seal, and engine. Those parts will be installed in the 80 if they haven't been already.
It was beyond time to get rid of the car. I couldn't save it, and it was just taking up valuable real estate in my garage/driveway.
RIP Harold II
Well, too bad you had to sell it, but good luck on the 80..
I hope you got enough out of it to help fund some of the remaining items on the '80. I know it's hard letting go, but sometimes it's the only logical thing to do.
Dwayne :)
It is actually going towards the debt the 80 and the Impala racked up lol

At least those of us that seem the car and followed this post know how bad it was underneath and all over. My 80 has some rust underneath but repairable and in much better overall shape.
