Hi all...while out wandering the local junk yard looking for a roller cam..i came across a Capri turbo and noticed a carb on it.............sounds to me like an easy upgrade...(for my limited mechanical skills)..anyone try this? is it as easy as I`m thinking it is?(no wiring..I hope)...I`m going back Sat. to get a better look at it..thanks for any thoughts or ideas.........
You would need to upgrade your pistons, rods and rod bolts to be able to pour some boost to it. Your best bet would be to get a motor from a T-bird turbo coupe or other turbo charged car and start with that. Cast pistons will not last long with boost.
The other possible issue with the Capri set up is that the turbo is on the intake side of the car. I'm not sure if the steering would get in the way. The exhaust comes off the manifold, then around the back of the bellhousing and up into the turbo. Then the turbo exhaust needs to go out the back from the same side. Its a lot of plumbing on the intake side.
thanks all for the input...but....I found an 86 turbo coupe....ad says it needs a head..going there sat. he wants $500. ...I`ll offer $300 and go up from there..and best of all there is plenty of info on doing this swap...
Now thats the ticket... ;D Yeap, that will be your best bet. Good luck.
Thanks for the vote of confidence.......lol.cause other than oil and plug changes..I aint done nothin that comes close to this... :o.......but i`ll keep reading
Sorry people.....the real Q is will a Merkur 2.3 turbo with a 5 spd bolt up ...to my auto C4?
Merkur?? What happened to the 86 T/C?? If you do decide to start on a EFI turbo swap, there are many guys here that will be willing to help.
SVOwagon
Yes the Mercur motor will bolt up to your C-4.
Went and looked at the 86 t/c the guy had started to take it apart and the engine bay looked like a rats nest ..so I kept looking and found a 87 merkur and another 88t/c...I figured they`re all going for about the same price so why not look at them all...3 weeks ago I couldn`t dig up a 2.3 turbo and now i found 3 in a week ;D.....go figure!!...
Get the engine and computer from the 88 T/C and the harness from the Merkur. Your set!! ;D

I concur doctor............. ;D
Thanks all...got the 87 merkur home yesterday....now the fun begins....I just gotta keep looking at it 1 step at a time cause the whole picture is a little (a lot) intimidating ??? and reading about the swap is my way to avoid doing it...lol.....lets see now...step 1 ..go read some more........ ;D
update...engine out and sitting on stand waiting for time and money...now what do i do about the harness?..I only pulled what i had to off the engine and marked them..but what about the rest of the harness.. ??? and the puter..I`ve scoured the car and for the life of me can`t find a keyboard or mouse..(figured I`d follow the wires back to the puter) ;D..k I admit I`m a jughead not a wrench head..need help on what to take...and how?..I`ve removed most clips holding the harness under the hood but do i need it all?..headlights..etc? Do I trace back what I need and remove them individually?......thanks for any all help!!..think I`ll go read or clean parts till I start step 2....lol..
I know on a Mustang you have to remove the dash to get the harness out. I would assume you have to do the same for the Merk. Also your best bet would be to find a large Vam from a SVO or 87-88 Tbird , 35lb. injectors and the computer needed to run them. You don't have to do this, but you will have more HP if you do. You can find most of these parts on Turboford.org.
Ok there'll be a BIG wad of wires with a rubber grommet like six inches long. one end will have most of your engine sensors , the other will have the 'puter. My Taurus's is actually on the firewall behind the heater!! That means I've gotta pull the WHOLE dash to get to it.
thanks people...now under the hood left side by the w/s is a box of relays fuses etc..I`ll assume thats coming with the harness..the rest of the harness (to the puter?) looks like it enters on the right side..and what looks like a vacumn aplifier..also i`ll assume any vacumn lines entering the cabin is to control the hvac...not engine mang....went looking for a haynes manuel but most if not all places discontinued carring them on the merkur got one on the t/c though..my niehbour says I`m suffering from midlife crazies..he can help with the engine rebuild but I`m on my own for the wiring...well not really..I got FORDPINTO.COM........lol.. ;D
The computer on a merc. is hidden on top of the clove box.Or could be in the passenger kick panel.
I got my harness from a Merkur. This is what you should do. On the passenger side under the hood find where the harness goes into the fire wall. This will be right above the turbo. Follow it out to the engine and to all the sensers. Go inside and follow the harness to the computer. It will be somewhere by the kick panel. Also, there will be a bunch of grounds going to the body in this area as well. Unscrew the computer from the harness and unbolt the grounds from the body. There will be other wires to undo, but it's been awhile and can't remember everything. After it is all loose, with a screwdriver work your way around the rubber grommet (from under the hood) that is in the fire wall around the harness and pull everything to the engine bay. Look for things in the engine bay that might be bolted to the body... sensers, grounds or anything else that will have to go with the harness. I know I'm leaving things out but it's been awhile and can't really think of everything right now. One thing to always keep in mind...DO NOT cut any wires!!!
Hhhhhheeeeeeyyyyy JJJJJEEEEEEFFFFFFFFF they are talking about wiring here......your FAVORITE subject!!!!! Jump in here and help this guy out. You have experience doing this not ONCE but TWICE on the same car. lol
not a chance!.....besides SVOwagon has this covered, thank god! ;D
update.......k got the harness to the EEC-IV out all along the right side across the front and down the left to the brake booster now from there it looks like I`m going back into the cabin after i get it out from around the booster..sound right?only cut 2 wires..to the 2 side marker lights also found a few eyelets loose but figure the`re grounds...passing thoughts as I`m working......everyone says the turbo engine is an easy drop in for the Pinto..then it dawned on me not one word about the wiring ;D and I gotta stop manhandling this stuff..broke a couple of vacumn fittings along the way :'(..hoping to rebuild the engine over the holidays but can`t get to it till the car is out of the garage and won`t do that till the harness is out.
Wires to the marker lights ??? ??? Sounds like your getting too many wires. There is a harness for the engine and one for the body. You only need the harness for the engine. Like I stated before, start at that grommet above the turbo, and work your way out to all the sensers, then inside to the computer. Anything that is not involved with this harness you do not need.
ooops...I started at the gromett on the right firewall...was i to separate the harness at that point and only take the engine stuff?...that box marked EEC-IV is that the right puter? cause I see more under the dash.
Ok, this may help. Go onto my site, go down to "other turbo Pintos", then click on "High Performance Pinto". Go down to the very bottom of this page and there are some really good pics of his engine bay. Looks to me like all the wires you need are the ones in the red loom. You can also click on the 4 cornered arrow thingy in the bottom right corner of the pics to super size it. You can see where the red loom goes into the firewall. This will be in the same place as the Merkur, only the Merkur will have a grommet around it. Facing the engine bay on your left side...you will need wires that go to the VAM, boost solenoid, ground wire that goes to turbo housing, MAP senser (black thing held on by 2 bolts),and there will also be 2 plugs (one small, one big) that will not go to anything. These are the plugs for running codes for your sensers. Don't worry about them right now. You can see that the harness kind of splits into two parts from the fire wall. One goes to the things I just described, the other goes across the back of the engine bay. Follow this one and there will be a wire that goes to the battery side of your starter soleniod and one for the EGO senser (on top of the exhaust elbow). Follow it along more and there will be a plug that goes to your TPS. This is on the side of the throttle body. There will be another plug that goes to your air bypass valve (big round thing right next to the throttlebody). Following it along more and the harness will split again. There will be kind of like a "sub" harness that will have wires going to your 4 injectors; oil psi senser, coolant senser, knock senser, ACT senser (middle of intake), I think that may be it. This "sub" harness you can't see in the pic, and you may have left it on the engine when you pulled it, as it does unplug from the main harness. This is what I did. Moving on down tha MAIN harness, we come to the EGR shut off senser. Then to the coil and on to the TFI (on the side of the distributor).
I wish I could take detailed pics of my car for you, but it is in storage 320 miles away. As for the inside, what I wrote before is all I can really remember for now. I hope I didn't leave anything out in the above paragraph...78pinto ??? ???
EEC-IV...yes, this is the right computer. By the way, heres my site.
http://myweb.cableone.net/svowagon/
SVO..you`ve helped tremendously..thanks..your site..well i`ve been referring to it all along..great site and nice job on the car(your site has been in my fav.`s since I first entertained the idea of a swap)..anyways the harness has been stripped of the extra`s and i`m as far as where it enters on the left(drivers side is always the left side) there is a small l/blue wire off the alt. any idea what its for?..anything else you can remember will help but for now i need a rest.... ;D
I used my Pinto alt. so I really don't know anything about the Merkur alt. set-up. You can reuse your Pinto alt. and wiring, but may have to change pullies if your not going to use the V-belt set-up.
Ive been following this thread for future reference... What wires need to splice into the original Pinto harness?
none...The EFI harness will be all by it self. There will be one wire that will go to your battery side of the starter solenoid and one wire that will go right to your negitive post on your battery.

Wow, that is easier than I thought ;D One more question... Can you mix match harnesses? In one of your previous posts, you mentioned the sub harness that splits off from the firewall. Can you interchange that harness between the T-bird and Merkur?
I have never done this... but I would think no. Why do you ask? I've never delt with any other harness other then the Merkur and 87-88 T/C. I'm about 90% sure you can't with these two because the 87-88 T/C has an extra senser in it, so the wires would not match up. As for the 83-86 T/C harness, I guess first you could look to see if they would physically go togeather. Then you would have to look at the pin out sheet ( on my site ) and see if all the sensers have the same pin out numbers. Then it should work. If they DO have different numbers, I guess you could move them to get it to work. I would just use the right "sub" harness and not have to worry about it.
K..I`ve been avoiding this long enough..read and reread your post.. looked at and studied your pics...I think I`ve made a mountain out of this..( got everything taken apart and cleaned and sent the block & head out for checking,cleaning)...so i got myself all the way to the left side to where it re-enters the cabin and i`m not supposed to be that far. the sub harness was to end earlier than that. So my next step is to start taking the wires apart and get this sub-harness out..I have no need to re-enter the cabin? I noticed you used the Pinto starter relay..the lower cable on the throttle..kick down linkage? And the only wires entering the Pinto is for the puter..right? Other stuff....Daughter doesn`t want to give up the Bobcat now..says the car grew on her..Yaa right.. she`s broke and its a guy magnet..and I was born yesterday.. ;D Anyways found a `75 Bobcat..may go look at it this weekend...5 hrs round trip..put the turbo in the better of the 2 and she can use the other for school..but the added costs will slow me up some.
;D ;D ;D found my point of confusion..once i removed the alt. harness from the starter relay..the rest of the harness fell away..I now have the engine harness with puter....whew ...the `75 bobcat was a no go for me.
Glad to hear you FINALLY got the harness out...just kidding ,man ;) If you need or would like, I'm going to my parents for Christmas ( that is where I'm storing the wagon for winter) and could snap some pics of it. This is the only time I can do it till Easter, so ask now. ;D

I asked because I know I have the complete subharness out of my 86 t-bird but I am not sure if I got the rest of the main harness I needed. I ran out of time and had to get rid of the car sooner than I had hoped and had to rush to get the computer and wiring out before the next owner came to get the car.
I for one would like you to post some more pics of your car, primairly the wiring. I have hesitated converting my car to fuel injection because of the wiring harness but it sounds like it will be much easier than I thought. I will most likely do the conversion this coming summer.
Thanks for your help
SVO..thanks and I`m with Tigger.. more pics would be great!!.. and because i broke most of the vacumn conectors I`ll be looking at those...I`m getting the engine back tomorrow...he says i got a cracked head(wife tells me that all the time ;D) but the rest checks out good..wants $1200. to replace repair and assemble .a little steep so i`ll get it back and see what i can do..our plant is shut down the 1st week of the new year so i`ll have time to look around for some deals...so with that i`ll wish everyone Happy Holidays
I'll take some of the wiring and of the vacuum lines. I know that most of my vacuum lines are no longer the way they were when the motor was in the thunderbird. Mostly got rid of lines that are not needed. I'm also going to take pics of my trans mount and crossmember. When putting in a T5, these parts have to be modified. I'm thinking that all these new pics will be added to my site and I'll let you all know when that is done.
SVOwagon
hi all..quite the absence..been busy though.. just not on the bobcat...lol..seemed like everytime the car went out it got dinged or banged or something so my priority was to get the car off the road..so after finding a car then getting the saftey etc...and so on...well anyways now that the cold has settled in probably for the remainder of the winter I can now turn my attention back on the swap..so with a rebuild kit ordered I still have to replace the head..and now with the bobcat parked I can start getting it ready for the transplant.
Just a quik update..engine is almost done..but I parked the Bobcat in the field.. no hood..it snowed.. now won`t start..turns over real nice ..just won`t catch..not that it matters it`s still socked in with drifts..warm days just makes it soggy out there and the car..she`s a sinking...what can go wrong will!!!!
Good luck with the project. There is not much to hook up with the harness. Do you still have the donor cars? I did mine less than a year ago, I will give you pointers if I can, just ask.
Bill
Thanks Bill....well I`m just sitting here collecting parts etc....gonna go with tubular arms..they arrived Tues. ..I put the pully`s on just to see and noticed right off that they didn`t line up so I mixed and matched them.. looks like it`ll work Alt. bracket is coming from the Bobcat.. had to cut & grind a little off a corner to get it clear of the intake. Since I can`t move the car I`m bringing the hoist to it... It`ll be easier to pull outof the field after I get the engine out.The Merkur is also just sitting out there..a friend of my son wants it..I told him to wait..make sure i got all I need first.I gots a few Q`s to ask but they`ll wait till I get to that point where I need to know.lol..cause when I look at the whole project..nope..1 step at a time....lol...I started to look at the center mount header to clear the heater motor but the exaust turn down look like it`ll interfere with it..with our damp humid summers here even a summer only car needs air flow to the windshield. This weekend i`ll start taking the rest of the parts off..just hope it`s not windy..

pic. Vam
pic Turbo and heat sheild. The sheild is about .5" away from the firewall.
pic. Not as bad as it looks, really, very easy. Note my kick down, hooks to the stock arm on the tranny.
Hey, I thought this thread was about "carbbed turbos................ ;D Jeff go to chat
Darwin has a theory about this thread.
Bill
;D I think Darwin`s theory is working in reverse for me...went to remove the turn down on the exhaust and 4 of the 5 bolts broke ..no he-man stuff they just gave way..better to find out now rather than after..idle hands.. now I gotta beg borrow or steal some tools..1st weekend I`m off.. the motor in the Bobcat is coming out then I`ll get it into the garage
;D finally got some time...engine and tranny is out..oh and bringing the cherry picker to the car...bad idea..got everything half way out and reached the limit on how high the picker would go ..it sunk in so we couldn`t pull ..so the tranny came off in a very akward position..best to send it out for a look see..now I gotta see what i`ll need.. get it off cleaned and put on the turbo..some suspension work then I`ll see about fitting the turbo...slow going and going slow..I`ll get there just don`t know when...lol ;D
How's it gonig?
Hey all....thanks for asking... the tranny was sent out.. shift kit and some extra clutch plates going in ..so in the mean time I figured the tubulars can go in ..but the spring refuses to fit..as soon as it get close to position the whole car lifts off the jack stand..I probably need the weight of the engine..so with that said I think I`m ready to trial fit the motor and get the spring in also..I only did the r/side so it looks bad with the sag..started to clean and degrease the engine bay..but this stuff (release all cleaner) is taking most of the rustproofing off .one more cleaning and that`ll be enough..the hvac motor still needs to come out but I`m gonna try to sit the motor down on the mounts...I know I`m not posting many Q`s yet.. but I read the posts of those like you who blazed the trail before me and find most of the info I need..on another note..Tues. I pick the tranny up ..put it into the wheelbarrow ..place it in the pick-up drive to my buddies place..put it on his bench..get back home..bend over to tie my shoe and bam!! throw my back out...go figure..oh and i got me a digital camera took some pics but can`t post them..best i can figure is that the files are too large..I know it can be done but how?.....later
Hey 80 bobcat,
When doing the cherry picker thing.
Sometimes it helps to deflate the front tires.
Gives a bit more clearance.
Also do not use the hook at the end of the crain.
Take the hook off and put the chain attached to the engine through the bolt
at the end of the arm.
From Pintony
Thanks for the hints Pintony....Well I got the engine in..it`s not sitting proper yet though..needs the hole for the exaust stud..and the exaust turn down just clears the hvac motor..so mayby I can leave it in ,..I figure after i drill a hole for the stud I may get more clearance there...the heat will cook the hvac motor but either way I wont have one..
On another post I read that i have to resize my pics to get them posted here..I`ve searched everywhere..pulled every pull down I could find on any and every screen and still can`t find how to resize my pics...any hints? It`s probably real simple but i`m so puter illiterate that I wonder how i get back here sometimes..
I just set my camera at the low quality setting and it works fine for posting. What stud?
Bill
Thanks `77 I`ll try that.....the stud I`m referring to is on the exaust turn down where the rest of the exaust connects to...it`s sitting on the inside fender right now but the scratches will leave me a nice mark as to where to drill...for now though I gotta try and get the new spring in and then paint the engine bay..mayby play with the camera some...lol
Hey all....anybody put tubular control arms on?..mine are supposed to be direct replacements but I`m having trouble. the strut bar that attaches to the lower control arm the nuts wont fit to secure it.. the arm itself gets in the way of threading them on..all I can think of doing is popping the studs out putting in longer ones then using a spacer..then I looked at the old one and see a bracket that circles the ball joint and reinforces this section..where the strut bar attaches..I`m thinking I have to do both..reinforce this section and use longer studs with spacers. anybody do this? any hints? am I on the right path?.......thanks

Looks like your heater will blow REALLY hot air! Most turbo conversions do away with the heater all together. When you get this working I'd love to see it. I'm betting a heat shield is in order to keep the blower motor from literally burning up!
Well after banging the metal in the fender area to make room for the turbo..exaust,etc.. the engine sat back even further and now I know why the heater motor is removed entirely..it`s just in the way...so while I`m waiting for the strut bushings (1st 2 were sent back..only sent the male part (Moog)) I opted for TRW..but I`m told they own Moog..anyways hoping to get the set this time..I`m not looking forward to doing this part..I just don`t bend like I used to....lmao ;D
there is a fellow at www.turboford.org who sells very nice custom made turbo headers for the pinto that will allow it to be moved further forward if your interested.
Thanks `78...I opted to take the hvac out...and it was a lot easier than I thought..looked like it was out once before...strut bushing came and the right side is back together..but the new coil has a definant curve to it..but everything bolted back up ok..now to find the time for the other side..the tranny sure is taking long..I guess my next step would be to start looking for a fuel pump....I got a lot of work ahead of me but things are starting to come together
;D...I got one in
this one stuck.. :'(
Anybody know if I can use the feed and return line that are on the car now for the fuel system? They look to be in good condition ..then I would only have to find a place to mount the pump.......thanks
That's all I used and it works fine. Make sure you use EFI high pressure line & clamps if your using EFI.
I just read `78`s post on the inertia switch..good point..anyone know if the `87 merkur`s can be wired in? where would I look for it? Or am I looking at aftermarket? thanks
I used the harness from an 86 t/c, and the stock pump wires worked all the way back to the side panel (h/b car), and I just lengthend the power ones down to the pump from there(think I put the details on page 3). Used the stock one with the harness for it if you can. On the t/c I had, it was in the trunk, on the right side, under and near the rear deck speaker. Small black box, 1.5"sq. or so, with a white button on the top(been a while, hope this is right). As far as the blower motor, I think i posted that an underdash aasy. for an a/c car, delete the evap., can be used, and it lets you have heat and defog. I just pulled on out of a jy car in MA last weekend. If you do that, get ALL the parts and ducts, as the are ALL different. It is a royal PITA to work with, and it took about 2 hours to remove. I purchased one and installed it, but that was the first time I removed one. As far as that header, there is not much room for the vam as it is, and moving the turbo forward will not help.
Bill
Hi 80bobcat,
You can find the switch on any fuel injected ford at the salvage yard, probably in the trunk.
Just wire it inline in the hot wire to the pump.
thanks guys..all good info and tips..I`ve hit another snag on the project..while working on the stuck bolt on the left lower ctrl arm I must of nicked the boot on the steering rod cause I had a puddle of fluid on th floor and I think there isn`t to be fluid there..so off the steering rack comes..get that rebuilt too...need a 24mm and all my stuff ends at 22mm so its off to the hardware store....I wonder if shiney tools count?...lmao...2 steps forward 1 step back..sooner or later though......lol ;D
Hi all...just a quik note to let you all know..everything has come to a halt..and if you haven`t noticed its been awhile since I did any work..I`m going to need time to gather some money and especially time..that has been in very short supply lately and i don`t see anything letting up soon.....so everyone stay cool (hard to stay motivated in this heat) I do keep comming to this site..I'll report in when work resumes on the project.
Hi all...not quite back to work on the progect ..but I did get a rare weekend off..and since the tranny came back I thought I`d bolt it up to the engine..now here`s the problem I encountered..the adapter starter plate from the Bobcat won`t line up with the crank on the engine ( Merkur)..what gives? and how do I get past this? only 1 of the 6 bolts wont line up so I`m thinking of drilling that hole a little larger ...thanks
;D..boy do I got egg on my face.......turns out everytime I orientated it to the tranny I would turn it around before I got to the engine...then wonder why it wouldn`t line up...but its not all bad I did find out there is a bearing in the end of the crank that has to come out before I put it together...see 2 steps back and 1 forward... ;D ;D
I almost did that myself!!! (removing the roller one is not fun, unless you destroy it) I did install the oil pan and then had to remove it again to change the dipstick tube/plug (before install).
Bill
Hello Bobcat80,
IF you had an extra input shaft you could hydraulic the old needle bearing out by packing the bearing hole with axel grease and driving the inputshaft in with a dead blow hammer.
Viola; the bearing will pop right out!
From Pintony
thanks Pintony...I got it out ..and no it wasn`t pretty till my neighbour came over and seen what I was up to and brought his puller. He`s the type who has everything ..knows how to use them and if you can catch him doesn`t mind loaning them out. Thanks Bill and yes i was on my way to destroying it before the puller showed.
Glad you got it out. I would never re-use one, so I don't mind how I did it.
Bill
hi all...ok now for more Q`s...fuel pump and filter is 3/8...but 5/16 is coming out of the tank so I`m gonna ?? ( thinking out loud) put an adapter nipple just past the tank run h.p. 3/8 hose to the filter then 3/8 to the pump..mounting it near the front of the car..then to the fuel rail....then do the same to the return line...I gotta stock up on hose clamps or run a lot of rubber hose? any advice, hints, tips would be welcome............thanks
Hello 80Bobcat,
Your 5/16 line should provide enough fuel for a 200+ Hp Pinto engine.
Over 300 HP may require a 3/8 line.
From Pintony
thanks Pintony.. but thats not the problem...the pump and filter have 3/8 fittings on them and i`m trying to hook up to a 5/16 system...and the fuel rail is 3/8 ..so it seems like I`m going from 1 size hose then back again..just to change back again...so as to use whats there...just thought that was a lot of change ups...hopeing for an easier cleaner way... ???
thanks Bill..got your post as I was typing this one...I guess I am on the right track then....

Hey Bill,
Yes, Please try again.

Make sure you mount the fuel pump close to the gas tank and not at the engine compartment.
Thanks ........I almost did..thought it would cut down switching of sizes...oh and for those who don`t know...the return line on an `80 is 1/4"....lol...I`m off for more FI hose
Yea, I think the 77 has the same, works fine.
Mount the pump as low as you can too, they don't like to lift.
Get those fi clamps too.
Thanks tony.

Hi all.. I`m in the middle of a turbo swap and finally after a long long hiatus I`m back on track... I just got the engine to turn over and sure enough it started ( I finally found help).. but everything was kinda jerry rigged ..so now I got to make it look good. .. I know I`ve not been online much.. but I remember that we had pics posted of finished underhood work.. is there a chance I could get some links to them as to give me some ideas on where to mount sensors etc etc... As noted earlier I`m way out of practice on site and having a dickens of a time searching.. I still have a long way to go but FINALLY !!
And to top it all off the guy who came and wired it up is a friend of Map351 who sold me a front valance..that I now can see getting put on........ what a small world we live in.
TIA ........... everyone!
