Hi All:
A bouncing beautiful baby car was delivered to me today. A tow truck (er, stork) delivered a '74 bronzy-copper runabout at approx. 2 pm. She was bather and had attention lavished on her by her stoked mommy. I have a few questions about the (new) baby- like what's this toggle switch under the dfashboard on the driver's side, and what engine is this by looking at a photo (the sticker is discolored from a previous under-hood fire). Also, she will need (new) parts, like armrests and a rearview mirror. I would love to find a '74 owner's manual too. This time I hope the pix will show. Anyway, mommy and baby are fine...
grats on the car, Where is this Switch? if it isnt the headlight or wiper switch its Probably not stock.
I bought a Peugeot with a "mystery" toggle switch, after a year of playing with the switch on and off and listening for things 'clicking' and watching for something to turn off, I followed the wires and figured out it was for fog lights the car didn't have anymore. Congrats on the new car! Hatchbacks are cool and handy. Factory a/c? I didn't see a pic of your engine, it has to be either a 2.0 or a 2.3 given that its a 74.
Chuck :afro:
It could be a rear window defogger. Just guessing.
NICE CAR!!!
Are you sure it is a toggle switch? Your car appears to have sport mirrors, and if there is a mirror on the passenger side, it may be the adjuster knob for that. Also, there does not seem to be any picture of an engine attached to your post. :D

I was going to say to that guy were dealing with Ford Pinto. weired Fred ???
My 79 has switch in that location next to column, mines for the rear window defogger. Pull it towards you & lever lights "ON" ,do it again & powers "OFF". Do you have any wires in rear window? Or might have been eliminated. I did'nt know at first look.
DK
Congrats on the 74 Pinto! She looks in good shape on the outside. Got any other pics of the car?
As for the owners manual, I bought mine for my 77 at a car show in Carlisle, Pa for $6. you should be able to find an owners manual for your car at almost any car show for a good price. Ebay also has them from time to time but they cost a little more that way.
Hi,
Sorry I didn't post pix yet of the motor or the toggle. The toggle switch, which looks like it's chrome-plated, is located under the dashboard closer to the driver's side. I'll send a pic tonight when I get home (I'm on my friend's 'puter). The car doesn't have a rear window defroster (I'm assuming that is the original window). As for A/C, there's a sticker on the inside right wall that says "Air Conditioner" but the previous owner assured me the car has no A/C. I haven't had a lot of time to really absorb everything in her. Yes, I'll post more pictures very soon. Now that I have that reducer thing figured out... Thank you for the congrats. I'm really happy with the car. I can't wait to start fixing her up. I also want to thank the nice lady who sold her to me. That lady is a firecracker! She is happy that her little car went to a good home.
I'm thinking the engine is a 2.3 because there seems to be more stuff in the engine compartment than I remember my '72 had (that one had a 2.0) The sticker on the valve cover is discolored due to a previous car fire (thankfully superficial). I know I have a '74 Pinto OM floating around somewhere but I'll be darned if I know where I misplaced it and its sister manuals. The ones on ebay look like the cover's missing (or I forgot what the '74 manual looks like.).
The hatch works better than the one on my '97 Rodeo! It stays up (okay, okay, so I need to change the lifts on the Rodeo. I'll get to it...) ;)
Congrats on your new baby!!! Doesn't look like you have to much fixing to do!! LOL She looks like she is in pretty good shape!!
Thank you Pintogirl!
You're right- there really isn't much wrong with her- just some little things. I was told that she belches a lot of smoke from her tailpipe. She runs rough and I have to keep my foot on the accelerator pedal to keep her from stalling. Most of what she needs is cosmetic, like the vinyl trim on her sides, the transmission shifter plastic base is cracked in several places, Of course the dashboard is badly cracked, but she lived in the desert all her life, so I'm not surprised. THe rearview mirror needs to be replaced because the reflective part of the glass is cloudy.
Now for those pix...
pic #1 is the toggle switch under the dashboard and instrument panel. The switch is between the steering column and the radio area.
pic #2 is the engine.
pic #3 is where the plastic piece for the pop-out window hinges are missing. The window kinda flops around (what, you've never seen a window flop around?! ;)
When I get a few minutes more I'll post more pix.
It looks to me like a 2.3 you have, judging by the air intake system and location of smog pump, etc...
Is that a toggle switch or the mirror adjustment knob for the passenger's side sport mirror? I know that my car has a hole for the adjustment knob for a passenger's side mirror, but my car did not come with Sport mirrors. Because I installed Mustang II mirrors on my car, the knob does not fit under the dash as it should. It looks exactly like a mirror knob from here....
The switch should be for the sport mirrors, I have the same switch on mine, But I need a new Adjusting Cable as mine broke.
You are correct... it IS a passenger-side sport mirror adjuster. I'll find any excuse to go out to see my new baby and this was a great excuse! The mirror doesn't move much but it does move. Thank you guys for clearing up this mystery. How clever is that- to have a pass. side adjusting toggle (?) so you don't have to reach across the car to make the mirrors right?! That's so coooooool!
I understand the 2.3 is more fuel efficient than the 2.0- Speaking of engines... nowhere on this car does it say "unleaded fuel only". I'm guessing this takes regular gas. What are my options in terms of fuel? Lead additive? I remember someone told me when I had the '72 Pinto that after all these years the valves had hardened to where unleaded fuel could be used without damage. Please advise.
My '72 runs fine on regular unleaded, although unleaded fuel was not a requirement at that time.
Dwayne
i spy ac on that car. maybe the person meant it didnt work. but its there nonetheless
I had the same issue with my sport mirrors, where they barely moved. I sprayed a bit of liquid wrench on the pivoting parts before I installed them, and let it soak over night. After that they moved very freely, but not to the point that they become crooked when the car is bumped or during rough driving.
I do find that they are rather sensitive to adjustments though. I will move the toggle in a specific direction and the mirror doesn't respond right away, but eventually jumps past where I wanted it. Because of this it takes a little bit to get them adjusted correctly. Once done, it doesn't need readjusted though.
75bobcatv6, if you find somewhere to purchase new adjusting cables, I would be interested in them as well. Then I would just have to find out how to safely replace them without breaking anything. :P

Are you sure it is a toggle switch? Your car appears to have sport mirrors, and if there is a mirror on the passenger side, it may be the adjuster knob for that.

:afro: SWISH!
Hey again...
I took a little trip to the local junkyard today. It was a bittersweet experience for me. I went there hoping against all hope I would at least find another set of window cranks (The Baby is missing the knobs from hers) and came across a (sob) '72 Pinto in Grabber blue like my first love. This one didn't have pop-out windows and had a WAY straighter body but was otherwise the same. I was bummed to see her there. However, a little bit of her will live on in mine. She had the door trim that I needed as well as the window cranks (someone took them off to get the inner door paneling). While I was rooting around in the cab I found a nifty Pinto floor mat (see picture).
When I was done salvaging from the Grabber blue one I spied a '76 Mustang ll. I think the windshield will fit the '74 Mustang ll I'm getting in the not-too-distant future. While I was there lamenting (again)- this time about why would someone sacrifice a Mustang with metallic blue (mmmm) interior when I spied a pair of ford Mustangll-Pinto aluminum mag wheels with the black stripe around them. Yay! Now I have a set of four. They will need to be cleaned big time. Is it possible to make these guys really shine like in their younger days?
If there's anyone in the Oceanside Ca. area interested, there are a pair of other aluminum Ford (?) mag wheels but there's no black stripe on them. There's also a '77-78 powder-blue Pinto there but it's been there awhile.
Thank you for the pointer Dave.
The toggle itself moves freely but the mirror doesn't. What's the best method of getting to those pivoting parts?
It is a really tight fit, but you have to pivot the glass to one side with your hand while sticking a narrow (but not to small of a head) Philips screwdriver behind the glass. Once done, the glass should pull away from the housing with the cables still attached to the back of it. Once there, you can do the lubricating. Getting it back together is the reverse procedure, but also a bit more tedious while trying to keep the mirror centered (the cables pull it out of position while tightening the screws).
If the toggle moves really freely without any affect to the mirror, you might have a broken cable. There are three in all which lead from the toggle to the glass.
Thank you Dave. I'm gonna try that out as soon as I have a few minutes to play with her. Sunday, probably.
Today was baby's day.
One great way to know yopur car's paint job intimately is to rub Turtle Wax on her. There's real horses that don't get so thorough a rubdown! LOL. What I discovered were places where the paint is flaking off to bare sheet metal (groan) and little rust bubbles under the paint in a key locale or two. The good news is, she's waxed to the max. The bad news is, she'll need a paint job in the not-too-distant future. I did change out the shifter bezel to a '72 metal one (old one is a badly-cracked woodgrain one in plastic) and switched out the original '74 window cranks with '72 s (which, to me, look better than the '74 cranks). I'll play more tomorrow...
Nice find on the parts
Yes the rims can be polished as long as there is no pitting but it is a lot of work I saw a set that Had been cleaned to a mirror finish and the person told me It was about 8 hrs per rim to get them that nice. I did not ask what they used to clean them with unfortunately.
YIKES!!! Eight hours per rim!?!
That's ok. The baby's well worth it. She'll look so good in them... I think the pitting is minimal, which is good... I'm in the process of tearing my garage (and, coming soon...attic!) apart looking for the pinto center caps I know I have. I have a set of four red ones with the frolicking filly and I have a set with our filly with a black backing (these centers are smaller than the rebacked ones) . Now if I can locate the friggin' things... Well, at least the garage is cleaner... :cheesy_n:
Blupinto did you happen to get a price on the powder blue car in Oceanside. Fred :)
Hi Fred,
Are you referring to the one at the junkyard, I'm afraid it's already gone as of last week. Sorry. I don't know if they were going to sell the whole car- it was at Ecology Auto Wrecking.
Now...if I should come across a Pinto in my travels, would you like a heads-up?
I drove the baby about nine miles today. She did me so proud! She has a full tank of gas and a bottle of lead additive. She still runs rough but she kept up with traffic on the 76 "expressway". She stalled only right after I pulled in to the parking space at my friend's vintage clothing shop. It's raining off and on here in Oceanside but the car's lights and wipers all work. This is her longest trip with me at the helm.

That is so cool!! Sounds like you had a good time with you baby!!! I can't wait to do my first 9 or more!! LOL I have only driven around the neighbor hood! I am looking forward to the day I can drive mine to work!!! It will be the oldest car in the lot!!! LOL
Congrats on a successful journey!!! :)
Blupinto sure, I will be in Sandy Eggo area 2PM on 12-12-08. Thanks Fred :)
I'll keep you in mind, Fred! Enjoy Sandy Eggo! It's America's Finest City (and my birthplace!) LOL .
Pintogirl, you are so on my wavelength! I've already bragged to my co-workers that there will be a beautiful vintage sub-compact invading the parking lot soon. I' too, can't wait!!!
One of the great joys of old car ownership for us who are relatively new to old car ownership is discovering things you might not know existed. Today I discovered that the backseat area interior pseudo-wood side paneling has an ashtray on the right side, but not on the left.
Now for the not-so-good news: I took my copper queen a mile to WallyWorld to get some essentials and the baby kept stalling at stops and her Fasten Seat Belts light (?!) buzzed in spite of my seat belt AND the passenger side belt being fastened. Also there was a smell (reminiscent of, well, like butter pecan or something like that) but the odor wasn't constant. Also I heard sone clicking noise right near the firewall. She made it to the store and back, but now I'm a little worried.
I'll be talking to my mechanic soon.
I am sorry your journey to Wally World didn't go to well. It looks like we are in the same boat though. I guess you can say us girls stick together!! LOL I too took my Pinto out for the first time (on to main streets) to go to the gas station. It started out ok, but about the time I got to the main street and had to step on it to get out in traffic, the car decided it didn't want to go very fast!! I will tell my story in my project thread, so read about it there!! Don't want to threadjack yours to much!! LOL I will say, I too made it there and back, so she didn't leave me stranded, just took her time coming and going!!! LOL
Hope you find those little kinks causing your problems!!! Keep us informed on what may have caused your problems!!!!
Kim
It's ok Kim threadjack away!
I guess great cars think alike! LOL Mine, too, is in no hurry to get going. On one hand I feel bad for the folks behind me (Hello! you just pulled up behind a little old car. Get a clue!! She won't burn rubber on her best days so get in the left-hand lane and stop sniveling!) Oh, did I just say that!? Well, maybe I don't feel toobad for the folks too in a hurry to see a classic in action!
I did read your threads and have to conclude that my earlier comment on great cars thinking alike sticks. I have windshield weatherstripping/ rubber issues too. The BF of the great lady who sold me this car put- no, SLATHERED- silicone all over the outside of the windshield. The chromey trim around it is covered in the stuff. Heres the kicker- IT STILL LEAKS!!! Aaaaaaahhhhh! (sploosh- the sound of my head exploding). The inside rubber has wide expanses where it cracked in places. I don't look forward to taking the windshield out, though. And I would kinda hate to remove that rubber anyway- it's part of the old Pinto's charm.
Note to Fred: There's a '72 droolingly beautiful powder-blue automatic listed on ebay with $800 starting bid- and it's in Diego. This car was on craigslist and the owner was asking first $3,000, then relisted for $2,000 obo. I contacted them before I found the copper queen and got no reply. I didn't have nearly $2,000 but thought I'd give it a try. Also, on craigslist in Mira Loma there's a silver-and-maroon '80 Pinto going for $1500. I don't know if it runs but the tires aren't flat.
blupinto thanks for info.. Fred :)
The Fasten Seatbelt light is something dear to my heart lol. Everytime your car shuts off and needs restarted or you turn the key on the buzzer and fasten seatbelt light will come on. My '78 drag car still illuminates the fasten seatbelt light each time its started which makes me laugh because the Pinto sure loves the 500 HP under the hood and wants me to be safe =P Good luck with your Pinto.

I guess I don't know how to use the fonts. Sorry if it looked like I was "yelling" or being sarcastic. I'll just stick to this font from now on...
Anyway, the seatbelt buzzer had been good until this last drive, and the baby just really didn't feel like going out that day. I swear I feel unharnessed power in her, but something's not quite right... then when the buzzer came on for no reason and I got that smell, I thought she wasn't going to make it down the street. She did, but it was a struggle. I wouldn't be surprised if her timing was a tad off. Where's that mechanic...
I took the baby to the local beanery this morning (okay, Starbucks!) and she wasn't as cantankerous as last spin. I did give her a lengthy warm-up session. This is good. However, I hear rattling on the right rear that I don't think is the floppy window. Hmmm....

LOL "Beanery" That is just to funny!!!! My hubby is looking at me strange because I just busted up lauging!!! LOL
I'm glad your trip was a better one then the last! I have to say, I am not adventurous as you, LOL! I am going to change my fuel filter before my next great adventure out, and at that, I will stay in the neighbor hood till I know she will get up to speed in a timely manner!!! LOL
I am really enjoying reading you trials and tripualatoins (ok I made that word up LOL), because I feel like I have someone to relate too with my own!!! It's neat to have another woman doing the Pinto thing!!! It's kinda like girl gossip, "so, what happened with your baby today?" , but the baby is a Pinto!!! LOL

You can always do what I do... turn up the radio lmao.. Glad she ran better today. It almost sounds like an issue with the choke if it ran better after a lengthy warming up.
It would help if I had a radio! lol. I just play music in my head (maybe I'm not supposed to admit that... ) She does have a hard time starting every time but she's a trooper. Sadly I didn't get to play with her afterwards. The garage (or my crap storage building) made its siren call to me- then proceeded to dominate my day! Love those lattes! I had to actually stop and make myself go to the store as planned earlier. I have optimism for tomorrow.
Hey - I'm glad to learn I'm not the only one who "plays music in my head". It sure makes living with the radio delete package in my Pinto a lot more bearable!
Dwayne
Mine is a previous-owner-radio delete! lol. I'll have to hook up the ol' AM to listen to those happenin' tunes.....not. Seriously, I'll be getting an AM-FM cassette (at least) so I can pop in the ipod and play period tunes. Great for a cruise night or old car show and I'll be dressed in '74 duds (and hopefully be heaps slimmer!) .
I could always grab the AM/FM/8-track that is sitting in the Bobcat I'm parting out if you like. ;)

Not to hijack the thread but I will take it if you are interested in selling.
I am gald I am "normal" when it comes to hearing the music in my head when I am driving sometimes LOL!!!!
Keep up the good work
Thank you Dave, I'm good.
I've only had one 8-track in my life, Gordon Lightfoot's Summertime Dream. It's long gone, who knows where... 78squire may want it, though. I would at least like to have a tape deck so I can plug the ipod in.
...but first I gotta replace some shocks...

There's nothing like driving around on a summer day listening to ELO on the 8-track ;D Or having a dad show his children what was "top of the line" was back in the day.
If my Bobcat wasnt totally wrapped up for the winter, I would pull the cassette deck and send it to you. discolives has one headed his way but I am not sure if it works.
Thanks so much! I believe I have some ELO on the ipod. Strange Magic coming out of the speakers... Well, spring isn't that far away... pencil me in!
You could always do what I am gonna do with my 77... I installed an am/fm 8 track & have two adapters for it... an 8 track to cassette adapter, and the cassette adapter for the ipod. Talk aout your time travels... from the 8 track era to the digital age lol.

That is what I would like to do. Just need to find the 8 track radio and the cassette adaptor! I have the ipod!! LOL
Heck yeah!....
WAIT! My words aren't invisible!!! Whoo-hoo! BTW, the site looks great...
Anyway, that would be pretty cool, the technology through the years in my little gem... and get this: a friend at work Wednesday had his ipod not connected to his pickup (I drove the Baby to work and got a few positive comments- including one from him) and he showed me his ipod with this doodad on it that lets him play through the speakers in his truck without a port or an adapter (like my Rodeo has).
Wildfire's mom (me) wants another bouncing baby Pinto. San Diego craigslist has a dark green Pinto wagon for $950. mommy starts to dream of taking the pooches out in it- especially since it's easier for Mojo (11 years old) to get in a Pinto than a Rodeo- plus more room for three large dogs. But no mon no fun, even though the man offered a reduced price- plus delivery and a, er, crash course in driving a stick shift. I have no right to want yet another car right now in these tough times.
Still, I dream...in green. Where's my money tree!?! :'(
Please don't mind me. I just had to pour my anguish somewhere. I'm going to see what I can do to make this dream a reality. Cross your fingers for me! :)
Becky,
I'm a firm believer in the old adage, "where there's a will, there's a way!"
The man selling the wagon certainly sounds like an accomodating sort... might he be willing to let you make payments? Maybe a lay-away-type plan where he wouldn't actually deliver the car until you've finished with the payments? I don't know... there's bound to be a way if you think about it enough!
I'm keeping MY fingers crossed for you... and I'll bet a lot of other folks are too.
Dwayne
GOOD LUCK!! I had given up on finding a coupe to have fun in when I finally got word on Jr. And the fact that it's a sibling to my red wagon made the wait worth it :D Yeah times are tough but look at it this way, if they were better, it would be harder to get the little cars cheap so .....
Becky, I say if you really want it & it's meant to be then it will. I pulled it up & that is a nice looking wagon. One thing I noticed & gotta wonder.. Is the cowel just repainted or has it been replaced lol. I would see if he is willing to do payments, especially since he is willing to lower the price for stick shift lessons. You never know.
Mark, I know why you had given up on finding a coupe... Because they don't exist! lmao.. Seriously though, I know what you mean. You were looking for a non-wagon Pinto. I do like how that one you got looks.
It's easier for me to call the two door hard top "the coupe" then it is just to say I am looking for another Pinto. People get confused because I have two wagons ;D
If you look up the word coupe it means something like two door hard top and yes I know it's a hatchback but it's cooler calling it a coupe.
Thank you for your faith in me. I have a peaceful feeling about this. In my heart I know she'll be mine. :) A couple minutes ago I hit upon a plan. I don't know if he'd be willing to take payments, and he wants to be rid of the car in nine (eight now) days. But I wonder if he's a musician... it would hurt a little but if he was interested I think I would trade my 2000 Rickenbacker 330 guitar almost gladly for the green wagon. Then I wouldn't go into more debt and could actually learn more (manual tranny, 2000 cc engine...) but as I said it would hurt...
I think there's a way. It all comes down to what do I want more... a guitar I can barely play (but love all the same) or a Pinto who's numbers get fewer and fewer...?

Yeah, I know exactly what you mean. I got a Malibu Maxx, and according to Chevy it is a hatchback. I do anything to avoid calling it a hatchback.
It doesn't look good. Why is it that when I can spare cash I'm either a) not interested in a car (2or 3+ years ago) or b) there's not a Pinto anywhere nearby? I realize I don't "need" yet another car but I was feeling this car. I could virtually see her in the driveway next to Wildfire. Oh well. I guess I get to keep my guitar.
It appears the wagon has red primer(?) on the cowl and a few small dings but it wasn't going to be a show car anyway. I had such grand plans. :'(
Further developments may emerge. Stay tuned...
I'm sending good Pinto joojoo to you!!! I hope things work out!! I know how you feel when you see that poor little Pinto sitting in that persons yard and they just don't love it like it should be loved. You are so wanting to rescue the poor thing!!! That is how I felt when I saw the Ghost, but luckily for me, we had the funds at the time to get her. I have since stopped looking on CL just because I really don't have the funds right now to get more, nor do I have the room, yet!! LOL Will be gaining some room here soon though!! LOL
Good luck!!!
Bless you Kim. You're really good at sending good vibes this way. The truth is, why am I so ga-ga about this wagon? I can't even drive it! lol. It's a stick. The guy, Gil, assures me it's a trustworthy little beast. And anybody who not only offers delivery but a quick stick lesson to boot is gold to me. He sounds like a funny guy. So yes, send plenty of JooJoo or JuJu or Mojo (oh, he's here! lol.) or just plain good ol' good vibes. I'll take all the help I can.
Okay... you couldn't negotiate a trade with the guitar. Do you have any musician friends who would be interested in buying it? Could you sell it on CL or eBay? I know you're dealing with a tight time frame, but you never know. Think outside the box, girl! That wagon is callin' your name!
Dwayne
(fingers AND toes crossed)
Some people's toes are so long they can pinch! So crossing them would be a breeze. lol. I do have a musician friend who might be interested in buying it and at least I know it will have a good home (and maybe I can buy it back someday too!) ;D dga57, you are too funny! But thank you for your faith in me. I'm even thinking of a name for the wagon. I'd better not tell. It might jinx me getting it and render the JuJu vibes Kim sent me! I'm still feeling that car in my driveway...
BREAKING NEWS:
It is rumored that a green '73 Pinto wagon will make an appearance at an Oceanside woman's house sometime tomorrow. Authorities say that jubilant screaming will be heard as far away as Riverside County and beyond. One source noted a Rickenbacker may be involved. Stay tuned...
That guitar for sale? How much? I might be able to get the funds for that. It would Entertain my kids and Get me back in practice. What kind is it?
It's a Rickenbacker 330 in Fireglo. Picture George Harrison's 360 12-string- except mine has 6 strings and an "R" tailpiece. It comes with hardshell case. However, the guy with the wagon is bringing the Pinto around today at 2 pm or so. He needs to lose the wagon by this weekend because he's moving. I was asking $900 for the Ricky- less than what I bought it for in 2005. It's a 2000 model. I love this guitar, but I want the little wagon more. I really can't explain. I would love for someone who loves guitars to have it.
P.S. Kitten not included! ;D
the last guitar i had was a 1980 fender stratocaster, with the pearl pick guard, capo and all the accesories. was a christmas present in 2000 from my first wife, had to sell it in 2003 to make a car payment. been lookin ever since for another guitar, and well.. Im really picky about those.
I can definitely understand being particular about a guitar. Mine's not a vintage model but it's a beautiful instrument to play as well as look at.
Here's an update: Gil brought the Green Bean (see I already named her!!!) by and I got a lesson in driving stick. He said he was impressed with my enthusiasm but he still has to think about the trade. I'll know either way by Friday. The JuJu's working Kim! Keep sending it down!!! :D
All hail Pinto juju.. I must find a vega to sacrifice to the Pinto Gods to seal the deal.
Pinto Ju Ju? Is that like a Car Ma Thing? Is it important that the car is green(Envy color)? Pintosophy needs another chapter added for JuJu.
Looking for Gumby
Pokey aka :Pintosopher
I sacrificed two Merkurs today.
Photos later....
Ok, I went out and meditated with my Pinto to help send more "Ju Ju" to you and the soon to your green Pinto!!!
jujujujujujujuju!!!!! ;D
I tell ya, you & Kim must be living in the right area to get a nice Pinto. When my brother goes out there for his job I should tell him to bring me one home lol... That is if the two of you haven't already bought them all up lol
GAWD!!! I HATE THIS &^$%#@(*&! COMPUTER OR PHONE MODEM OR WHATEVER IS TIMING ME OUT WHEN I'M REPLYING!!! ARRRRGH!!!!!!!!!!!!
That's done. No, there's nothing special about green, but I like that color. Her interior is (break out your big box of Crayolas) Spring Green. I know folks have, er, rather creative names for that shade of green that "loosely" resembles the output of a cretain mucus membrane. The Green Bean needs attention to her interior. The steering wheel is #1 on that list. I'm hoping by Friday she'll be sittin' pretty in the driveway next to Wildfire. Now to ge the hang of the 4-speed manual gearbox. I hope I can...

You can do it Becky!!! Driving a stick can be really alot of fun!!! Specially if it is a Mazda Miata!!!!! LOL You'll get the hang of it and you will feel you are driving a sport Pinto!!! ;D
So, who's going to Knotts now??? Wildfire or Forrest?? LOL You know, Forrest green!! LOL Ok, yah, I don't know if it is Forrest green but the name just came out!! LOL Kinda like Forrest Gump!! ;D :D Oops, forgot you already named her Green Bean!! I like that better!!! LOL
Kim is right.. Driving a stick is a piece of cake once you learn how. I learned back in 1997, and haven't driven one for a couple years, but if I were to recharge the battery of that car I could drive her with no problem.
Sadly it's not looking good now. Gil just emailed me a few minutes ago and wants $300 AND the guitar. If I had it I would, but money is tight here too. Unless a small miracle happens by Friday (tax refund) Green Bean will likely go to someone who'll trash her the rest of the way before dumping her at a junkyard. Damn Arnold S! :'( :'( :'(
Maybe you can make a deal that he gets the guitar now and you will make payments on the 300, he holds the Pink till you pay it off???
I don't think so. He was counting on the cash to get him back to New Jersey. Now with a guitar he's out more gas, plus now he has to pay for more baggage (the guitar). I do understand, but I was on cloud 9 before that sucker-punch email. I want him to be bluffing, but I know he's really not. He seems like a nice, honest young guy. I'll probably get a tax refund check Saturday (too late). I'll get over it (not).
Becky,
I know this is horrible financial advice (so if there are any financial advisors reading this, just remember... we're dealing with desperation here!) and I don't even know if it's available in California, but Virginia is chock-full of "Payday" and "Car Title" lenders. True, their interest rates are outrageous but if you have a tax refund check coming, it may be worth a week's interest on $300 to avoid losing the car. These type of loans can usually be obtained immediately and without a credit check. Worth thinking about! I wish I had an extra $300 I could spare you for a few days but things are tight here too. Still keeping my fingers crossed!
Dwayne
Thank you Dwayne. That's awfully nice of you to say that. The car loan idea is a good one. I might check into it. Yeah, I want that lil' wagon that bad! Thank you. Maybe there is hope... keep your fingers crossed.
Becky,
In spite of my Irreverent sense of humor, I wish you all the best in acquiring that wagon. If I was flush with cash, I offer to help out, but I'd likely ruin my finances, and a few other things. Heck I'd even be checkin' on that '72 in Moreno valley for 2500 buckos.
If you succeed , then you must posulate yourself in thanks to the Spirit of CAR MA and promise to be a good steward of its custody for the next Existential owner.
Curator = ownership= good vibes hereafter
Light 'em or we'll show you how...
Pintosopher.... jUjU Fer U
May things go right Becky and the JuJu get you the Pinto. Now to pray to the almighty Pinto Gods...
The 1 on left is the 1st Muntz 4 track model. The right is 2nd 4 track model. Fred :)
Uuuh, Fred, what are those? They look radio-like to me...
Just out of curiosity, would you happen to have any lime (Spring!) green interior parts for a '73- like, say, a steering wheel?
Becky this is the desert, nothing green here ;D The 1 on left is the 1st 4 track car stereo, uses cartridges like you're 8 track. It is 60's stuff. Fred :)
Aren't cacti green?!
Remind Ashley to bring the fuel cap when she goes to Knott's! Only 9 more days!
Well?? Did you get it????
Aye Say Kim,
I do believe she's Pulling our bloody legs :D ! The clues are there!, I guess she'll explode about Monday if she hasn't admitted it :amazed:
Wagons Ho!!
Pintosopher
Who you calling a Wagon Ho!?
Well, since I've got a chum or two waiting with baited breath (keep the cats out of this! lol) I'll spill. It's not in my possession yet (tonight) but it's fair to say I won't be mooning over a wagon after tonight! I'll post pix tomorrow morning, then it's off to the races! Hopefully not a race to burn out the clutch, or to crash because I had a brain fart. Remember- I don't know nuthin' about no stick shift. Suffice to say I'll be playing with my new old baby! :tgif: ;D :-*
Becky,
Just Light 'em up when in doubt. Steer in the direction of the slide and hold on! :surprised:
Pintosopher, Pulling the Wagon No Ho's on board :drunk:
No worries... I'll not be going fast enough to slide... it's when the panic sets in and I hear grinding noises and I lose what little cool I got... :tgif: :hypno: :o :accident:
That's awesome!!!! So...... What one is going to Knotts?? Or you going to have a friend drive one???? ;D ;D ;D ;D
Congrats on your new baby!!!!! Can't wait to see pics!!!!
I think we have to bring the one we signed up, so Wildfire's going. If I can master the stick on Green Bean (or another possible name- JuJu Bean) and other factors go my way I might take her to stuff bags on Sat. Wait til you see her Kim! She's the Green Machine's green. :tgif: ;D

Ahh, bummer!! I won't be there that early and Sat. I am hoping to make it for Pizza in the afternoon/evening though!!!
I can't be there as early as I'd like either because I have to recycle Wildfire's bad juices and the appointment is naturally Sat. morning, though I could cancel... anyway, I can try to do the pizza thing too. That is, if I can master the shift...
BTW, what is that black lever(?) to the immediate right of the fuse box? Is it a choke or is it the defroster for the back window (the window has the wires)?
The defroster lever is labeled defrost and is generally on the left of the steering column. Got a pic of it?

(I'm here all week ::))
HMMM?? I don't know about Pintos, but I thought the choke cables were generally located on the left on the side kick panel?? Also, I think the Vent controls are located on the left next to the kick panels but under the dash, or way over under the glove box! The Ghost had a choke cable mounted on the kick panel, but it went no where!! Was just floating around under the hood, so I removed it!! I'm not even sure if it was supposed to be there. Hubby said it looked like somebody had added it!
Did somebody ad fog lights or anything?? Or does the lever look stock??
Hardest thing about shifting is takeing off!! Once you got that down, your good to go!! Also taking off on a hill!!!! A little trick I learned when I first started driving (I had a stick shift Bug) was to use the emergency brake while on a hill. I would push and keep the button in, while holding the e brake on, then when I had to take off, I would slowly let the clutch out and give the gas, while at the same time slowly let the e brake off!! Once the car was rolling, I just put the e brake all the way down!!! ;D
OH, and as far as taking the car you registered with Knotts, just put the plates from Wildfire on the Green "JuJu" Bean!!!! LOL Just kidding!! I want to see Wildfire too!!!
I will PM my cel number to you so you can call me Sat Afternoon and find out where I am at. Hopefully we can get together so I can see the Bean!! ;D

Mr. Hanto, Have you been to the beanery with some greenery? :coolrasta: lol
Pics! Pics! Pics! Pics! Pics! Pics! ;D
I know I am rotten lol
Seriously, I want to thank you and everybody else for pulling for me, sending the good JuJu, Car-Ma, well wishes, crossed digits etc. I think it worked! It also helped that I "saw" her in the driveway and was strangely compelled to have her. So :welcome: and :happy_bday: my little Green Bean, JuJu Bean (a play on Jujube), Dream In Green, You are home now! ;D Pix to come...
1) That knob looks stock. There's a cable of some sort attached, I think, to the carb that wiggles when that knob is jiggled.
2) THAT'S what I call shag carpeting! It's like I've got my own little pasture in the Pinto! lol.
Down at the ol' hitching post...
Boy you can say that again about the Shag carpet!!!!!!! LOL She don't look half bad!!!
Need some pics of the front though!!! ;D ;D
How's this? It's overcast here so there's a gloomy pall on the scene.
...and the craigslist pic...
Now I'm off to the auto parts store to get an air filter. She is good once she warms up but she gets temperamental when she's warm and we're fooling around. I opened the air cleaner and sure enough, the filter's filthy. At least the guy is keeping the oil maintained...
Becky, that car looks sharp. As for the cable I would have to say, no it's not stock. The previous owner probably installed that. It looks like an aftermarket choke cable.
Thank you.
While contemplating things in the driver's seat I recalled that this car lived in Santa Ysabel for a while and it gets a mite cold there. Is there any merit there?
Could be.. The choke coil prolly went out at one time & instead of buying a new choke for it they rigged a choke cable to help during cold weather driveability. I have heard of it being done out here, but it also gets much colder in Ohio.
Becky,
My guess would be a Choke cable too! Many people would jury rig those up to compensate for poorly maintained carbs with badly maintained ( water heated Chokes) and just remove the OEM choke linkage.
MR Hanto ,
The Only HO's that I find that really work Are H.O. ( High Output) Your ride has one of these underhood. We should all be so Lucky to have 2 bumpsticks in the Head!
Corraled by the Philly and Pulling weeds,
Pintosopher
I know it snows in Santa Ysabel (it's in the local mountains) It probably doesn't go below 0 though.
I have a feeling that the tailgate and rear bumper are not hers originally. However, she does have a functional heater and a powerful 2.0 engine! Whoooopeeee!!!!!! :drunk: :D
 You guys are too much!
Oooh ,
Another ally in the 2.0l Horsey power revolution! AHH ,Have we got ideas for you and JuJu and your street will bear the marks of your rapid gallop away! :hypno:
Horseypower, by thunder, we need Horsey with much power Tonto
Pintosopher CFM (could find more) to the Max :drunk:
:welcome: Juju Bean!
That's the same color inside and out as my 74 wagon! If it weren't for the narrow bumpers, that 'massaged' front fender, and the lack of bmw 2002 hubcaps, I would swear that was my car! Is that astroturf? Aftermarket choke, very common. I used one for a while, I had trouble getting the choke to open after I closed it. Ended up fixing the stock electric one. Those 2.o's are a blast to drive! I swear they take off faster than the 2.3, they just run out of breath sooner, but around town, that's ok! You need a couple pedal pads!
Very nice find! :)
Chuck
Yes it is astroturf. I call it "my paddock away from home". lol. It also goes by "my greener pasture".
On another note, Mama was very unhappy yesterday morning- the first actual day I had my beautiful new baby. I went to check her fluids and get an eyeful of 2.0 memories when I pulled her dipstick to check the oil. Oh sorry. I guess I meant check the air in the oil pan- BECAUSE THERE WAS NO OIL ON THE #@*^&$%!^* DIPSTICK!!! >:( Oooh Mama was mad. Then when I went to explore every inch of the rear area I noticed there was moisture on the carpeting. When I lifted it up there was rust, moisture, mold, mildew, etc. The little twerp who traded it to me teaches kayaking in high schools and surfs on his time. The carpet and astroturf have been airing out for two days now. >:( The worst was the lack of oil. It's a miracle the engine didn't seize. AND he called her ugly! >:( >:( >:(
Now a question for the seasoned veterans and gearheads: is there a way to know if an engine was rebuilt at one time? The twerp had her for all of three months and fed her unleaded gas and no lead additive. Should I worry?
Becky,
It sounds like the Prev owner was treating the car like a Toaster, use it until it can't serve him any more "bread".
That being said ( Holy Crap! I'm being judgemental!) There's a bunch of things to do at this point:
Remove cam cover look for scored cam & followers
verify compression by cylinder
leakdown test by cylinder
Bore scope inspection to check cylinder walls
If all of the above are good, Where is the Missing oil? Heavy consumption or leakage?
Did the oil find its way into the antifreeze, Head gasket ,cracked head, or block?
Can we assume this guy ever changed the oil properly? Right length Dipstick?
Drain oil and measure amount present.
The Leakdown test would answer some of the "valves/unleaded gas issue"
Measuring an engine without disassembly for discerning rebuild status is not very accurate for all intents. You need to pull the cylinder head and go from there. This requires some knowledge & measuring equipment for best results.
Sounds intimidating, but JuJu Bean is now in your driveway, let the full diagnostic power of these community help you down that road.
Sound off all you Master techs..
Pintosopher
Sound off? Poooof.... that was the sound of my head exploding...
I'm still quite the novice, though I thank you for having that much faith in me... ::) I won't be doing any of that stuff til after the FabFord thing. I was asking if there's anything external that One could see and know an engine's been rebuilt. Jerry next door says no, so I'm going to do the lead substitute thing just to be safe.
Documentation is about the only thing that can show if a motor has been rebuilt or not. But then, only if you have receipts if it was done by previous owners, or car fax it if it was done by a shop.
Hey Becky!
Congratulations on sealing the deal on the wagon. I just knew somehow you'd pull it off!!! I haven't been on here since last week (wife got sick, then Easter, then in-laws showed up to visit) and never knew the final outcome of your negotiations. Hope the diagnostic stuff doesn't uncover anything too major. It's certainly a good-looking car. That shag carpeting is a blast! I agree with the others - it appears someone added a manual choke... not particularly uncommon, or even a really bad thing for a daily driver. Get the hang of that, as well as the clutch, and you'll be zipping around with ease before long.
My fingers and toes ache from being crossed so long but, for you, I'll keep them crossed until you dig into the diagnostics .
Seriously, have a ball at Knotts! If I didn't have to work this weekend, I'd be tempted to fly out there just to meet the west coast gang! Maybe next year!
Congratulations!
Dwayne
Thank you Dwayne! That's awesome of you to say that! I hope your wife is much better and you all (and everybody else! ;D) had a very nice Easter. The Twerp who traded with me (you see I haven't forgiven him!) told me she stalls three or four times before she'll stay on. Guess he doesn't know the Pinto starting procedure. This morning I only had to turn her key once and she was running.
I gave her a bath today and found out she has primer on her lower doors and front quarter panels. Her windows (the ones that roll up/down) have terrible rain channels (the rubber pieces that meet the window at the bottom) so she's had rust issues, I assume. Her tailgate leaks badly, so I'll need to deal with that too. Meanwhile, I'm getting better at driving her! ;D
So Becky, is it just me or is the Pinto clutch more sensitive and stiff compared to other cars?
I can't say. This is the only stick shift I've ever driven. I know I "dump" the clutch more than I like and the friction (?) point is almost to the top of where the clutch pedal is at rest. :look:
Exactly my observations. Lucky for me my Pinto was the first clutch I had ever driven. After that I got to drive my brothers 89' Mercury Tracer, sister's 87' Mazda 626, and my bothers 91' Honda Civic. I have also driving one of my friend's haundai's and the friction point is right between flooring the pedal and it's relaxed state. Not only that, but it is also much smoother and doesn't require nearly as much effort to push in as my Pinto does, making shifting much smoother and easier. None of these have a hydraulic clutch, BTW.
Me personally, I like the harshness of the old Ford clutch, makes the car feel a little more like a muscle/classic car! ;D :D
Hi Becky and Dave!
Nobody asked me, but I'll weigh in anyway since I'm old enough to remember how these cars drove when they were new. The clutch in a Pinto is pretty much normal feeling for its era... similar to what you might find in a small pickup today. My eldest daughter bought a Hyundai Accent a few years back and stepping on the clutch pedal in it feels more like stepping on a marshmallow - no resistance whatsoever! I guess I'm old-school, but I like the more primitive clutch too. At least you feel like you're driving a car, not a toy!
Becky, if the "twerp" didn't know how to use a manual choke, and that's what your car has, it could easily explain his stalling problem! As for my wife, she's feeling a little better than she was over the weekend. Long-term improvement, however, isn't likely. She suffered a pretty major stroke a little over two years ago (at age 46) and has been in a steady decline healthwise ever since. We just take one day at a time!
Have a great weekend at Knott's!
Dwayne
first car i had that was a manual was stiff as hell, loved it. and it was a nissan lol. i had a friend that had a 84 rx-7 when i was in high school with a manual choke so yea that can be fun =)
I can't say whether mine is stiff or not... once I get her going, though, she goes, and the shifting is pretty easy. ;D
Clutch has come a long way since the 70s, that's for sure! I just don't like driving newer cars because the clutch is TOO smooth. When letting the clutch back out, I can't feel the friction point like I do on my Pinto, so half way through the pedal stroke I stopping trying to feel the car pull and I just let it out, hoping it grabbed. Driving in hope that the car is operating how I expect it to just isn't fun.
the nissan that i had grabbed at Just about 1/2 inch off the floor and you always felt it. it was a 1997 btw =)
I let a friend take her for a spin today, and he said the gas pedal is stiff- by the time the car responds the engine's already racing. He thinks the spring (accelerator) needs to be loosened. He did say it brought back memories from when he had a Pinto.
I noticed last night- to my chagrin- the normal beams of the headlights don't work. Only the high beams. I'll bet I made a few friends on the road last night! ::)

WHEW!
I debated on bringing JuJu Bean/Lucky/Chia Pet (lol) to Knotts today. I had no doubt she'd make it, but ME...
I had fun holding bags to get stuffed and met lots of fun people (and had to endure grumblings from disgruntled unhappy people because of achy backs, going back into line time after time...) but overall a pleasant experience. After the stuffing was over and lunch was consumed I was at loose ends. I had no idea how to get to Alberto's place, and I couldn't find a payphone for nothing, and I didn't remember Kim's accomodations and wasn't sure when she was due in. It was hot, JuJu was getting cranky. I WAS cranky, so we came home. Overall I'm real proud of my little green wagon. I'm hoping Wildfire will do well tomorrow! KNOTTS OR BUST!
I'm sure Wildfire will do you proud!!!
Can't wait to meet you!!! See you tomorrow!!!! ;D
Ooooh, almost forgot...
This thrilled my eyes and warmed my heart when I glanced over the fence this morning...
The Pinto Sisters both have radiator leaks! :'( JuJu has a pinhole leak in the upper front of hers, and Wildfire (who didn't want to start this morning!) has a leak on top. This might be the cap, as there's coolant in that gutter area on top of radiator and the overflow hose appears hole-free. Kragen has lots of stop-leak stuff for radiators. Any suggestions which one's best? Money is once again tight so I can't get another radiator now. :'(
Dont use the plastic pellets one. I forget the name but its a real pain to clean out. the Alumaseal is ok.
Honestly I would suggest not using any stop leak. i have found it to be true that if it will stop a leak in a radiator it can plug up the cooling system, and even cause a problem with your heater core.
That stuff is also nearly impossible to flush out after you get the leak fixed. Just my opinion
Thank you Iffy! I like their colors too. ;D
