Fighting Fire With Foresight ( a fuelish statement)
« on: February 04, 2009, 11:46:59 AM »
Greetings all,
I've brought this subject up in the past, But had a recent "reminder" how important it is to us all.
As you all bring your equine rides up to restorative bliss, don't forget to replace all Rubber fuel hoses. I've been fighting a slow leak on my '84 GTi on the low pressure side of the Fuel injection right at the clamp on the hose at the tank return fitting. I had a Smog check coming up and added a Polyether Amine type additive to the Ethanol RFG gas sold here in CA. This was to "guarantee to pass" formula. Well , I went from fight a slow intermittent leak to finding fuel coating the underside near the Muffler! This stuff will degrade most old Nitrile Butyl Rubber (NBR) and seriously damage SAEJ30R7 Hose.

I solved the leak with Fuel Injection Hose SAEJ30R9 made by Goodyear. Look for the blue plastic liner inside the rubber hose. Then you can buy Ethanol type fuels and it can stand the effects of Techron, and similar additives.
Many of your cars may still have the old type fuel hoses near the tank, DON'T wait until they start leaking to replace them.

Otherwise ,all my warnings about the "CASH for CLUNKERS crap in Washington D.C.
won't mean a thing!
