Swap or rebuild?
« on: July 30, 2004, 07:21:18 PM »
Hello all,
I'm new to the forum and am thinking about getting my '80 back on the road. I pulled the head off some years ago because the valve guide seals were bad. It's pretty obvious that the previous owner didn't change the oil much-the cam and pistons are pretty worn. I have a '92 Mustang with a 2.3 and an automatic. What's the easiest and best way to get the car back on the road? My Pinto has a 4-speed and I don't want to swap transmissions. Will I have problems getting the newer motor to run with the carburetor? Will it bolt up to the transmission?
Thanks!
David

To answer this question, I'd suggest finding a 2.3 from a Pinto or other '70s era Ford car. Rebuild it, and drop it in the '80.
I left my Pinto in front of my house last night. This morning there were two more left with it.

That '92 engine should have a head with 8 spark plugs.  The head has different intake ports and a different bolt pattern for the intake than the old carbureted manifold.
I suppose what you could do is rebuild the original Pinto head and put it on the newer block.  You will also have to swap over the crank pulley to the old V type belt.
Then you got the problem with the oil pan.  You will need a front sump pan to fit that block.  They did change things  a little around the rear main area.
The newer block will bolt up to your four speed.
Really, I think Poison Pinto is right.  It would be easier to just rebuild the original motor, or at least one of the same vintage.
'80 Sedan, 2.3, EFI, Electromotive TEC3, 75 shot N2O, Esslinger Alum. D port head, 5 speed, 3.55, 15x7 Mustang "10 hole" rims.  Continual project.

Thanks a lot, guys. I haven't looked at the Mustang motor recently, so I don't know about the head. Will the newer style block bolt up to the 4-speed? I thought I read something somewhere that Ford changed the bolt pattern on the bellhousing.
As a second vein, what's the best way to de-restrict the older motor? I've heard that the Ranger intake manifold is really good. How about the Ranger cam?

Thanks a lot! Sorry for all of the questions.
