Super Pinto...
« on: July 06, 2008, 09:48:09 PM »
My friend is building a 75 Hatch project. He thought it should be different so we decided it should be supercharged. This is mostly junk yard stuff with stock SVO Vane meter,  in tank 255 LPH pump a T-5, an 8" rear and fat tires. It is getting close to run time. It uses a Volvo I/C.  That is a T-Bird M90 supercharger. It will have a functional bypass valve that will  be manually operated. We might set up the bypass switch like the infamous blower switch on the Mad Max interceptor. There are lots of details still to be worked out but he's really good with that stuff so it will run. Oh it uses a 2.3 Pinto Mid length headder like you see in all the catalogs. It will also be easily switchable to turbo power if so desired.

No  He will have the blower and the header insulated from each other.  It does solve the down pipe\blower motor issue the turbo cars have since  there is plenty of room back there now . We have no idea how much boost it will make with the current pulley. He put the biggest one he had on it for starters.

The T-bird blowers intake is on the back. The outlet is what you see on top, If he sat it  upside down on the intake it couldn't use an intercooler. Plus on the intake side there is no room for the vane meter and throttle body to mount (They are below the blower by the former battery location. One pic has a tube on top of the motor that he's going to use to connect the bypass to the intake. I forgot to remove it.

The blower takes to much power to drive when used on a 2.3. And loose the Volvo cooler if your going to run more than 20Lb you'll blow the tanks off..

The HOT setup is turbo & blower...

I Like it... I also have seen a guy with a Eaton SC on his Ranger 2.3L it worked fine... IIRC he had a inter cooler off a Ford diesel. It had plenty of power.

I envy his progress.

Turbo swaps and V8's swaps in Pintos get boring after a while its good to see something different.  Keep us posted.

The idea is to see what works and have some fun. He's a hell of a fabricator so he can make just about all he needs. We figure it will be more of a low end torque motor. It probably will not peak nearly as much power as the turbo. It will most likely feel like and drive like (Minus the front end weight) a V-8. This motor might end up in his street rod 35 Ford pickup truck. The Pinto will then be switched to turbo power. I heard about the Volvo cooler blowing its tanks. He ran that one to around 20 PSI on his old SVO so if it blows he's ready to upgrade. He switched the SVO to a Vortech aftercooler. We also have no clue what boost it will make considering it's a 90 (1.5 liter) inch blower on a motor (2.3) thats not even twice that amount. The pulleys appear to be overdriving the blower close to 50%. Maybe it'll pop maybe it'll haul butt. We will have the bypass switch ready   :surprised: in case it makes mega boost levels.

I'll get more pics next time I go out there. My Maverick is getting its 331 installed in his shop. Along with my Pintos new motor/5-Speed shortly after that.

Still it is fun to do something different. Fun to hear everyones  opinion too.

I don't know how soon the dyno will happen but I will document all the details. I will definitely put up the dyno numbers when I get em. It's still in the deciding where everything is going to go faze. But that is close to the final location for most of the parts. Hood clearance is an issue still so he's working on that right now. He just bought a 77 trunk Pinto for parts too.

If I get the chance I'll go out there and take some more pics this weekend.
