How do you keep dynamite from exploding?
Install a longer filler tube, a plastic shield, and change a few captured nuts!!
It still boggles my mind that there are people out there that believe that the Pinto gas tank ITSELF will explode. The Pinto tank was made the same way as other tanks of the era, with the same materials, but those other tanks don’t explode; why? Wait, maybe the tank itself was never the problem! Maybe it’s the GAS leaking from a ruptured tank that is the ‘issue’. This seems to make sense, as Ford did not change ANY tanks in ANY recall; they protected them from leaking.
What Ford did to the ‘exploding’ Pinto gas tank itself in the recall: NOTHING.
On a few occasions I have asked people that made a (stupid) comment about the tank as to what part of the ‘tank’ was the ‘problem’. Its amazing how fast they can go from being so smart and confident that they KNOW something and NEED to tell me, to a backpedaling moron.
There was another car during that era that was ‘attacked’ by the same person, the Corvair. Most people I talk to remember the car, but not the issue it had. I would ask here, but anyone can easily do the research to find out what ‘it’ was. If you don’t know off the top of your head you are in good company.
Sorry for the vent/rant, I have heard/read too many things bad about our cars lately.
