1974 pinto air cleaner adapter
« on: November 11, 2007, 03:01:10 PM »
I am putting a 2.3 1974 Pinto into my 54 willys jeep and the air cleanser is too huge. Does anyone know if they make after market or some kind of adapter oval to round so I could find a smaller cleaner?  Thanks

If this is small enough it might work...

You could try trimming the stock filter housing to the edge of the filter itself.  This makes the stock ford housing look like an open element air cleaner.  If that doesn't work, you could always weld/braze the diamond shaped opening part of the stock housing to a more compact housing with the wrong size carb opening.  I believe the earlier Pintos had steel housings, so it shouldn't be too difficult if you have a wire feed welder.  Either that, or from what I understand, putting a small 350cfm 2bbl Holley on a 2.3 is a breeze.
The Pinto I had I gave to my brother. The car was originally my mom's, (78 red Pinto sedan with a 2.3 and a 4spd.) I am originally from Tucson, AZ but moved to Oxnard CA :D
I'm looking for a Pinto wagon with an automatic.

I think I recall being told..... you can get mini-chrome cleaners from/for a VW Bug that will work??? could be for the early 2.0's???

I could be way off on this.... just thinking I remember someone telling me this once....
