Title: Rear Engine Seal
Post by: jeeprunne81 on October 10, 2010, 08:46:49 PM
Hey guys I need to know if it is possible to drop the oild pan on 1980 2.3l .  So I can drop the rear main bearing and change the rear seal.     Looks like it will be a tight fit.  I hope the rack and pinion doesn't get in the way.  last time I did it I had the engine out hoping to avoid that.  Help me refresh my memory so I am prepared to get this thing from leaving puddles in the drive way.

I haven't done it but been told you have to drop the rack in order to have enough clearance to pull the pan. Disconnecting the motor mounts and lifting the engine is not enough. I have 1 pinto with the same problem, tried to get the rack free and no go... I have to pull the motor to change the rear seal on that one.

Just in case you really need to know.
75 wagon 2.3
I removed motor mounts(not needed) just to get extra room
Jacked the motor up as far as I could
Removed starter
Rack and pinion had to be removed to get the oil pan off.
There is enough room to replace the rear main seal.

I had trouble getting the rack bolts out, the bolts are rusted to the sleeves in the bushings. 2 came out with some WD40 but 1 of the sleeves was/is rusted too bad. I will have to cut the sleeve off the bolt.. Be careful of using the BFH, The sleeve punched through the frame..I will need to weld that up.. I got into a rush with it.
Everything else came apart ease.

Now I had to remove the motor, I found water/coolant coming from number 2 cylinder. Either cracked head, block or bad head gasket.. Im thinking head gasket. Now I know where the coolant was going.. I removed a few rod and main caps and the bearings are worn out..
Now the wife cant stop me from finishing the turbo motor :)
