I thought we should start a project thread, so here it goes. Purchased this car for $300.00, and we are the 3rd owners. Background, 2.8 runabout. As of today we have the motor apart and the block and heads are getting tanked. the car had sat for 18 years under cover till we bought it. Interior is in very nice shape, just needs a good cleaning and going over. the rugs are in good shape, the leather is in perfect condition, no tears or any wear marks. the body will be the most time consuming aspect of this project, and the motor the most expensive.
the block needed hot tanking because the water that was in it evaporated after 18 years of sitting and left some rust damage. nothing that wont be cleaned up.
I say the engine will be most expensive because of the parts cost. the Cam is going to a custom shop this week for a custom grind, we have a MSD setup for the spark, and going to be running a 2BBL Rochester on this build. I will be doing a complete build of the motor.
Angie and I will be doing all the body work, spraying at least 3 base and setting 6 coats of clear onto the finish with 2 being layed then a complete wet sand between every two coats. followed by a full polish finish to bring the clear to full shine. Angie made a custom red mix up today from old part cans of red that we had laying around the shop, and we are going to be giving the starsky stripes painted on with a pure white doused in white pearls to make it stand off the red.
We have been slowly buying parts that were missing from the car, and as far as we can tell we have about 95% of all missing or broken bits. the rest of what we need will be made by us or bought as we see fit or as needed. Thanks to the people on this wonderful site for their bonanza of spare parts we are happy to report that finding things has been way easier than we thought it would be when we started out on this project. CHEERS guys!!!
here are a few pics, today we tore into engine compartment. we are planning to work on the body of the car on a fairly regular basis now that the weather is turning warm!!! so we plan to have her on the road by mid July, in time for the summer cruising season.
cheers
the day we bought it

WOW, what are you using to clean it up with?!?
LOL, I wish that cleaner did that.... we used TSP crystals with warm water. let it soak to get rid of the grime/oil... then we rough sanded the old paint then Angie went to work with Tremclad in the engine compartment. What you see is new paint. sorry to disapoint
you.
Today while Angie was busy sanding down the hood, I was busy placing things back in/on and tearing more stuff off.

Lol, it's okay. Wish there was some type of cleaner that did that much, I wouldn't have to buff all the paint on Brownie! :P
Ya I hear ya, a super cleaner that will take any old painted thing and turn it back into showroom gleen.... dang wouldn't that be worth a 1,000 bucks a gallon.... cheers, you are really going to town on your build looking good!!
This is at the end of 1 weeks work. Angie has done wonders to the passenger side, the dent is gone, and she is just about finished the tiny bit of work that needed to be done. pics as follows.
here is the dent when she started

The last couple days have been heartbreak and joy. We decided to do a custom mural under the hood, and had all going smooth till this morning when we were ready to start to cut into the heart of the project. Up till today the under side has been lightly sanded, 2 base coats, 2 clears then a full wet sand, then frisket papered and given the blue/purple highlights. the picture of the circle with the hood laying on the car shows what it looked like this morning, and we were ready to start the horse. As luck would have it, after taping off the under belly and cutting the image, when we started to pull the tape off for spraying the detail the clear was haveing a chemical reaction to the tape & paint. when we pulled up the whole set was lifting with the tape. heartbreaking!!! Angie figures that with this being under side of the hood oils were still being trapped under the base coat. only one thing to do... we had to take the underside back down to the original paint and then sand it down more and then give it 2 coats of epoxy primer.
After the primer went on then 2 base red then 2 more coats of clear. the hood is ready now to start again with the wet sanding and retaping for the circle.... today was a let down...
Not to be fully bummed out we decided to venture onto doing the custom valve covers.
these are the original 2.8 covers after 2 primer, 2 base coats and 2 clear. the added touch comes from the baby horse.... enjoy :)

How much $$$ to rent Angie for a week?
Dwayne
LOL... I guess that depends, we work best as a team. The cover was built and sprayed by me, (she cleared it) however, for the airfare I guess you get two for the price of one... how big is your dent(s). She does do excellent body work thou!!! While she went to work on redoing the hood I went to work on the covers. The other side of the car is mainly all sanding now with a couple small dings to get out. I will ask her tomorrow what the rate will be ...

I actually am capable of pretty good bodywork myself... my problem is lack of time. One of these days... ::)
Dwayne
ahhh time, yep that killer of great intentions.... I know and that other scary one is procrastination.... funny how work, bills and family seem to collide so well with projects and fun stuff. That is were the two of us are pretty lucky our hobbies and interests are the same.
You can relate then to the work involved in body work. :) it is funny when Angie and I talk to people about cars and things and she talks about painting and body work, guys have to take this second look and ask... what did you just say? ... then they raise an eyebrow as in... hmmm ya right, till they actualy see her work then they understand. some of her work on has won their owners trophies, and she has a couple of her own downstairs.
Do you do auto paint also, or just bodywork?
2 killer days work, 4 hours yesterday and 8 today produced this "old school" art work. 12 pics showing the proceedure. After resanding the underside and starting from scratch fixed all the oils from leeching.

we are still going to give this one more wet sand then 3 more clears to seal the paint. We will let this sit now till next weekend to cure the work.
Updating progress... (wich we will do every week or so... or when something good is done)
Started cleaning up the interior last couple days. Have the block and heads back form the shop and getting ready to figure out the parts list that will be going into the build. Cleaned up the ignition holder (the piece that holds the key/turn signals) when I first started with it there was no ignition and the column was torn apart from last owner. I looked over the parts that house the key and figured it was hooped. Before I was to chuck it and find a different one I guessed that maybe I could fix the seized pieces. After 2 hours of working it and soaking it I was able to get it to slide, painted it up and regreased the 2 steering wheel bearings.

todays attention was focused on placing in the gauge set that I was going to put into my truck. After debating about it, decided that yes I will put these into the car instead.
This is how I did it, and if you are going to do this I am going to give you a couple pointers, to help make it easier. This set comes in a set of three water/oil/volt and has a metal mounting bracket. I liked the distance that the package set the gauges at, so I placed the cardboard holder onto the dash where the gauges were going. after the circles where were I wanted them I scribed them into the dash/paint.
http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n69/ru_ready_4_r_n_r/scribecircles.jpg (http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n69/ru_ready_4_r_n_r/scribecircles.jpg)
I used a dremel to do all the cutting and grinding with. In the bits there is a fine scribing type bit. Using this makes a heavier imprint/etching to see the circle.
http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n69/ru_ready_4_r_n_r/etchingcircle.jpg (http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n69/ru_ready_4_r_n_r/etchingcircle.jpg)
etch in all 3 holes. Next comes 1 of the important issues. I used the metal cutting wheel on the dremel. Carefully cutting light (not to go through) on the INSIDE of the etched circle. the blade being careful not to damage the Aluminum dash. If pushed hard the straight wheel would make a straight cut and not a circle. time and PATIENTS is required. the reason to make sure to stay inside the etching is becuase after the circle is cut out you can clean up the hole and keep going to fit the gauges in, If out side the etch you can take away tooo much material and screw up your dash. CHECK to make sure taht no wires are sitting close to the are (hidden behind) where you are about to cut. A dremel will cut them before you are aware that you are that close. And the small sparks and smoke can distract your attention, so check that no wires are in danger.
http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n69/ru_ready_4_r_n_r/cuttingwheel.jpg (http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n69/ru_ready_4_r_n_r/cuttingwheel.jpg)
after cutting out the grind till the circle fits. On my set of gauges there is a top tang/holder, use what ever bit you think will get out that tiny amount of metal so it fits properly.
http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n69/ru_ready_4_r_n_r/firstdone.jpg (http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n69/ru_ready_4_r_n_r/firstdone.jpg)

WOW!!!!!! That's all I have to say is WOW!!!!. I'm so jealous, this will be a spectacular car once you have her done. The mural is exceptional.... Can't wait to see more pictures. Have a great time restoring this wonderful piece of Ford history.
Larry :police:
Thanks Lar, We have been truely enjoying the efforts and accomplishments in this build, tons of fun, and will be great when the day comes and we get to sit in her and turn the fresh new heart over.... vrooom. I forgot how easy and fresh it is to work on Ford's simplier days of cars. Not like working on our daily drivers, 2 ford rangers, and a chevS10. these old cars are nice and simple... no computers, no added junk to mess things up, just good ol' plain car.
cheers
Last of the dash pics for now, that is untill she is put back together.
here it is white, still needs clears, weather has not been nice to us, raining solid last few days so can't continue with the spraying.

found a killer steering wheel on CL tonight, will be picking it up after work tommorow, will post a pic of it. It is one of those deals that doesn't come around often.
cheers
Picked this up yesterday, this wheel should complement and finish off the interior. The fellow who sold me this wheel had it sitting/hung on the wall of his garage/workshop for 15 years and knew that when /if he was to ever sell it the wheel would be sold to someone who was doing a project and would love this wheel. Paid 100 for it and these are getting rare. the oak on it is in perfect shape and the chrome is mint.

This is going to be one fun Pinto to drive once it's done! You'll FEEL the excitement just sitting behind the wheel! :D
Strange things happen when you least expect them to happen... today was one of those days. Went on an errand and on the way back home happened to pass by a JY that I have driven past a few times, never stopped in there before. today I thought "I wonder if they have any 2.8 motors for parts" went in talked to the guy and he said maybe there might be one on an old bronco that is out back, go look. I was huh??? I am allowed back there? he said yes on sundays it is a bring your own tools and take what you are looking for... ohhh boy... venturing past the Ford cars on my way to see if the bronco has/had a 2.8, my eyes spot this old 78 mustang, the brakes stopped me in my tracks and peeking in I spot a complete center console.... yeppers that will be coming home with me. went back and sked the ol' guy how much, 30 and it is yours. wow we have a new project to recover. also grabbed a nice set 6X9 speakers, and some mint shape chrome window winders (from a 80 LTD wagon) and all the cluster light bulbs from the mustang....
here are a couple pics of the "raw" console before we attempt the new vinyl coverings in the near future.
before cutting it down to size.

hey dave, sorry just seen your comment, yes we can FEEL the excitement, just watching this build go together is a good feeling. sitting in her when the key is on and the motor is turning is going to be a whole other ball game.... neither of us have ever driven a Pinto before so we are really looking forward to bringing this ol' one back to life.
cheers
Awesome score! Those consoles are getting scarce! I'm curious as to what you might do to fill in where the center console mates with the stock center cubby. I have a gap at mine as well and just cut out some "chunks" of the left over end of the MII console and stuck them in there to fill it in temporarily, it looks decent though.
Try cleaning it up really well and use some SEM brand vinyl prep. It's like a neutralizer/cleaner for vinyl and ensures it's completely clean of oils and dirt. Once that's done spray it down with some SEM brand "landau black" (or which ever color you prefer) vinyl paint. It's flexible, long lasting, durable, and looks INCREDIBLE.
Watching this makes me wish I could keep Brownie! :(
hey dave, the plan is to just wash it up, then make a custom glued on refinish from the same vynil that we used on the dash cover, will mold & sew it into place, leaving the tranny indicator dial off and planning on building a white (vynil) area with the slot in it for the (auto) shifter. For the cubby and where it will fit the front end we are thinking about mating the red vynil to it be using foam (what ever thicknesses will work) and tight butting into place. will keep posting pics on this new little project. scarce probaly doesn't start to describe these... I was in total shock when I seen it sitting in there, and complete. funny thing is it was already unscrewed and everything... just sitting there waiting for the taking.... cheers
Not a very productive day, however, The dash's clusater was cleaned, lights checked, and placed into the dash. This gives the 1/2 way finished look as to what the rest will start to look like with the dash cover. Hoping tomorrow to get the rest of the steering stuff into place, and finishing off all the under dash wiring.

the last couple of days consisted of finishing off the interior doors. Angie wasn't happy with the clear that was layed on the white so she sanded it down and recleared them with tons of "bright white pearl & flamboyance sparkle" when you see the glove box you will see the sparkles. after it was dried on went the pinstriping.

also last few days I started the rear speaker case, and the white circle you see is plexiglass (white is the protective covering) it will be clear, and underneath the see through plexi will be the spare tire that will be seen with the spare tire cover that will be white and inlaid a red pinto emblem. (will post pics when it is finished). the plywood will be finished with the same red that the dash pad and the console will be made of.

hopefully tomorrow will get he dash/steering finished and the wiring near completion.
cheers
Wow, that white is amazing! I love the pearl in it, really brings the paint to LIFE!
Great progress, love the details in the progress updates, keep up the good work!
Thanks dave, I wasn't sure if I was going to keep posting the half completed bits and run a full (work in progress) thread or if it is better to post the completed works?
glad you like the work :) under the speaker section the amp will be hung upside down and all the wiring will be hidden under there over top of the black coverings. The amp will be wired direct from a fuse panel that I have bolted to the plastic console (under dash) isn't wired up yet, will show pics of how I will be doing this (done this) each unit will have independant switches for live power. head unit will be fused direct and switched, as will the amp. bolted in a 4 (glass fuse) holder for running the options, IE secondary switched lighting, stereo, (maybe second cigarrete lighter for plug in things, seeing that stock location is hard to get to. (will place this into the mustang console).
The motor parts should be here by end of next week and I can start to build up this one. unwrapped the reground cam today to take a look at it. wow the shop did a GREAT job on the grind. in all totaled $190 (can $) for the grind of the stock shaft and resurfaced 12 lifters. money well spent I figure.
cheers
LOL... I jut looked at the driver's door pic and it looks like the pinstripe tape is all wavey, the pic must have distorted on the resizing before I posted it. the tape is straight in real life...LOL
I love your use of the pinstripe on the interior of the door! Looks sharp... as does everything else the two of you have done so far!
Dwayne
Thanks Dwayne, :)
Yesterday I was hoping to get a good day on the car (until it was time to go to the track) was working away when my uncle called and said that his pit crew bailed and he needed more help. OK no prob, I was getting started on testing the sound system when he called.... Today I was able to get back at 'er and was able to test everything!!! worked like a charm.
http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n69/ru_ready_4_r_n_r/testingsoundsystem.jpg (http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n69/ru_ready_4_r_n_r/testingsoundsystem.jpg)
Here is a close up picture of the back of the (under dash) console. This shows how I will be running the extras in this build. I placed in another set of 2 for good measure today (just in case) the common is daisy linked and will be dual grounded from both the motor and the chassis. there are 2 future problems I see that I could encounter with this set up.... 1. blowing a fuse and having to take both, the middle console and this one out to change a fuse, and 2. making sure there is enough extra wire coiled up to be able to pull the console forward enough with out pulling the wires too hard. ** note to self - ADD extra 18 inches of wire **
http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n69/ru_ready_4_r_n_r/fusesbackofconsole.jpg (http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n69/ru_ready_4_r_n_r/fusesbackofconsole.jpg)
I didn't take a pic of the front of the console, however, this is where I set up 2 toggle switches (so far) they are on the top section that is closest to the under dash. room in there is pretty tight and I need to place some rubber strips there to make sure the switches don't ground to the frame holder. Before I place in this section for bolting I will be laying a rubber backing over the fuse holders to protect them from any misshaps and not getting shorted out.
After I knew this system was going to work I took it apart and then proceeded to strip the back seats out of the car. pulled up all the rugs, and then removed the plastic side wall panels. This ol car looks pretty bare as she sits now. painted the metal back seat base. (after taking it all apart first). Ran some of the wire lengths to the back of the car for the amp and then the run for the front speakers. needs a few more wire runs, and she is ready for the new carpet Angie was able to buy at her fabric supplier.
will post more as she gets completed....
Oh I almost forgot, this morning I went back to the JY, went looking for nice allen key headed bolts to complete the plexiglass. needed something that would look different. I had already looked at auto parts places for these type of bolts, no luck, my last effort would have been to a fastener place and pay throu the nose. After talking to the guys in the office they said go to the European section (and ignore that sign that says get a pass card to enter) well dang wouldn't you know it, after looking for 5 mins I get to peer under the hood of a 98 Mercedes and what would you guess they use to hold the fuel injectors onto the intake?? yep, allen head bolts :) gotta love JY's. No charge to boot!!! Tapped (as in tap & die) the bolts into the tangs that will be holding it down. will post pic after she is complete.
cheers
If you are running a lot of power to your amp, and even if not, you could go the same route I am going, as well.
I have one of these installed under the hood before the 8 gauge wire (originally wanted 4 gauge) to my amp runs into the car through the firewall:
http://a248.e.akamai.net/pix.crutchfield.com/products/2007/575/p575RFFAGU-f.jpeg (http://a248.e.akamai.net/pix.crutchfield.com/products/2007/575/p575RFFAGU-f.jpeg)
I've blown a couple 40 amp fuses off my 250 WATT (RMS) 90's model rockford fosgate amp. I had to up it to a 60 amp fuse to keep it from blowing. No issues though, and even with 8 gauge wire I shouldn't have any problems.
My brother who installs custom car stereo systems is fond of the dual fuse blocks when running two amps, one for sub and one for regular speakers:
https://www.addison-electronique.com/catalog/images/produits/section-c/030125.jpg (https://www.addison-electronique.com/catalog/images/produits/section-c/030125.jpg)
My deck runs off the stock radio wire, fuse located at Pinto fuse block. Would like to redo my wiring some day though.
Just a thought since you are going to be doing some custom car audio here.
Thanks for the info dave, I am getting tooo old to be cranking up the tunes in a car anymore so that doesn't scare me... LOL however, the wiring for the amp is 8GA straight off the battery through the firewall (grommets of course) into the fuse block. the line has a 30 Amp fuse built into it, if that one blows first I know I have probs. this is just a tiny amp rated to draw only 15 amps, so should be ok (I hope that is) i have to ask thou, what is that black fosgate thing? a fuse holder?
cheers
Yeah, it's a fuse holder. Wire goes in one way, AGU fuse is held (essentially suspended) in the middle and another run of wire goes in on the other side.
I don't crank up the audio on my 78' either, I just enjoy having SOME bass that smooths out the music. The audio in my car is better than my home theater and it's cheap compared to the home theater! Sound in the car is full, hits all of the highs and the lows without any vibration in the panel or distortion in the speakers. 8" Sony XPlode in the trunk in a little box, a 250WATT rockford fosgate amp my bother was getting rid of, Pioneer 6" full range speakers in the kick panels, and full range 6x9's in the rear deck.
Jazz and classical are BEAUTIFUL in the car! :D
no fancy sound systems for me at this stage of life but Jazz & Classical sure do make for some good listening after (and during)a 'rough' day at work!
Enjoying this thread and you guys talking about audio. I am an old-school audio fan, in fact my fanaticism back in the day now contributes daily to the continuous 24 hour a day ringing in my left ear. Ah, youth......
At any rate, I used to have a company car (Dodge minivan of all things) back in the 80's. Since I was on the road alot I built myself a custom oak veneered/carpeted box with three 10" Pyle woofers (two ported, one sealed), and a hinged door that held two Rockford Punch 45's and an OEQ-1 equalizer. The front speakers were a mix of RF tweeters and a midrange I don't recall, and I had a Sony removeable head cassette unit.
The system kicked nicely, the sound was absolutely clean. Never entered any competitions but really had fun with it. Of course, doing my wagon now I envision bringing this equipment back into use (still have it), though the cassette would be replaced with a CD player, and the speakers would be changed. Don't know if the ears can handle it though.... :nocool:.
Chris
I've heard about people getting the ringing in their ears from loud music in their youthful days. I've been a bit scared of that, the gift of hearing is a great one! I turn it up loud on occasion, but that's rare. Friends see my system and call it a waste because I don't "boom" (as they call it) the stereo while driving.
Boy, I hate to be the party pooper/old man, but when these people hit 50, they may be hearing something they don't want to - forever. It's nothing that can be treated, it's a permanent neurological condition. Believe you me, you don't want it. Every time I see one of these (people) drive by booming, I usually say "enjoy it while you have it".
Your attitude is golden, if you see it as a gift NOW, you can save it for later. Having had been a musician all my life, it stopped me dead in my tracks - and I SORELY miss it. I was warned in my youth and ignored it. January 28th 2007 was the start of it, and it's never stopped. You tend to remember the dates of unpleasant things.
Chris
I used to do stereo competition as well, crank up the tunes. fortunately i was smart enough to pack ear plugs to show off my car as it hit 146 with just one sub. i do plan on making my cruzin wagon pound for the odd competition in between the car shows. placing a larger inline fuse is definitely a wise decision stereo installation says it must be less then 12 inches from the battery so it will fully protect the wiring. just my few cents
p.s. i have no ringing. i do cherish my hearing too and am a big fan of all music but beleive it should be heard like the artist meant it to sound like.
I just love it when you can pull up to a car and the bass is so loud next to you that you want to walk over to them ans let them know that the car they are driving will be worth 100 bucks in a year because all that bass loosens bolts over time and they are now worthless.....
here is the latest updates. back seat out, cleaned, painted. (still have to attatch the new red carpet over this.

I have been keeping busy with that time consuming stuff of wires, and all those little things that you can't really get pictures of.... Angie has been making the car look new again while I have been busy with small things....

Before we left tonight we decided it was time to place on the name tag.

Not knowing any better for this is the first time I have had the oportunity to install a steering column, after trying to get this to work first time around by installing it backwards. Today she went together proper.
http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n69/ru_ready_4_r_n_r/steeringcolumn.jpg (http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n69/ru_ready_4_r_n_r/steeringcolumn.jpg)
well except for placing in the radio, the interior is as done as she is going to be. Now it is all body and motor work to do. We don't want to place in the new carpets till the body is painted, this way the carpets will stay fresh with no dust on them. The door skins can't be finished till the doors are painted, the seats of course can' return till the carpets are done... and the list continues.... LOL all waits now for the body. So untill we can get going on the rest (motor and body) things will be slower. here are a couple of pics that show up to date. the wiring is completed, and all the rest has been cleaned up.
I have a good weeks worth of work to do to the motor before assembly, porting and polishing, gasket matching, deburring, prepping the block and heads. then it will be onto the fun stuff. :)
waiting for the carpets.....

Just a side note: it's not only loud music you need to be careful of, after working in a shop for the last 30 years (dang I'm old) with air guns, blow guns and a whole array of other loud noises day in and day out, driving race cars with no exhaust, AND my share of music turned up too loud, I have constant ringing and hearing loss. Nowadays I always wear hearing protection (and keep the volume turned down) but it's too little too late. :(
The loss of hearing as we get older... and how the youn'ens just think... awww not going to happen to me.... oh how they will learn.
Angie was at her sewing machine doing other work last couple days and in her "spare" time she alternated on working on pinto stuff. here are a couple pics of the back speaker arrangement and how the amp is secured. the first pic is dark for some strange reason....
http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n69/ru_ready_4_r_n_r/backspeakersmounted.jpg (http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n69/ru_ready_4_r_n_r/backspeakersmounted.jpg)
amp (underneath)

She was also able to get the back seat rug sewn up and we placed it onto the back of the seat tonight.
http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n69/ru_ready_4_r_n_r/newbackseat.jpg (http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n69/ru_ready_4_r_n_r/newbackseat.jpg)
we have decided that it is a waste to let all things on the interior wait, so we are going to continue bouncing around doing things on the car. If the interior/rugs/seats and all in we decided to place some heavy painters tarps over the whole inside to keep it clean.
cheers :)
Looks great! Angie does a FINE job with what she is doing here! :D
I've always preferred keeping cars bone stock, but Angie's creativity is starting to win me over! Wow!
Dwayne
Her talents are good on sewing, I get the idea, we toss it around, I build, and she finishes/holds things while we put them together. She is very talented. this car is 100% a labour of love... LOL I think you guys understand. :)
this went together way better than I was expecting it to look. (will be nice when the plexi cover is off and you get to see what will be under it). thanks for the compliments, I will pass them on to her in the AM. cheers.
Here is the back area pretty much what it will look like. Angie isn't happy with this cover and being her first prototype in this it is a bit off on sizes. We guessed on it from not having a proper logo/decal pattern to use. This is what the finished back area will look like.
Today all the wiring was finished for the amp (I dislike soldering wires, takes too much patients) and somehow you need 3 hands..... placed in the back seat rest part. Amazing how fast 9 hours goes by working on a car. hoping that the rugs can be layed and cut into shape this weekend.
here is todays work. (the plexi isn't on yet, that will be one of the last things to be placed over the hole)
cheers

I love the concept! Once the fit is right, that's going to be totally awesome!
Dwayne
thanks dwayne, yes it will look nice when the fit is corrected.
Here is the hood on and up, placed it on for now to do the top body work on it. (it will be coming off again when the motor goes in) Safe keeping now on the car.

Seems like the logical place to keep it!!!

Hey all, I know that we seemed to have dropped out of sight for the last while.... we are still alive and kicking, had to place all projects on hold for the last month (and then some). We have been busy with work and also doing a major move, so time for fun, projects and the internet has been slowed to a crawl. We are on the final leg of the move and this week will be the start of the new house/shop. Packing up a shop, garage, and 3 bedroom house has been a nightmare.
cheers guys.

I'd been wondering where you were and what was going on. Glad to know all is well. It has been nearly thirteen years since the last time I moved, but I know all too well what a nightmare it can be! Tell Angie we said, "hi!" We'll look forward to updates on your Pinto project once you get rolling again!
Dwayne
WOW it's been so long that I had to reset the password..... LOL
Last couple years saw small progress on this car (project) however, this will be the summer that we will be driving it (crossing fingers) .... (gardens, animals, work, and other projects) seem to have ways of making distractions.
the car is now sitting with the engine in her, rebuilt, and redid the rocker springs with the floating ones. Had to make a new riser for the carb out of a 1 inch block of aluminum. She is sitting and waiting for the rest of the time consuming things... which brings me to the new question....
When I took the engine out (many moons ago) all the little hoses were gone and now I have no idea where/what the water outlets attach to. (thermostat housing) etc. Any people with the stock placement of the water lines on a 2.8 that can take a pic or 2 of what all the hoses are for would be extremely helpful.
I know on other posts we (Angie and I) talked about custom dash pads. We still want to do them (however) it is a time thing with us. We hope to have something going this fall/winter when we get house bound with the cold. We moved onto a farm a couple years back and now time chores seem to press time sideways.
here are a couple pics. thanks for reading again, wasn't sure if to make a new thread or keep this one. I will let mods decide. thanks

Welcome back! It's hard to believe it has been nearly two years since you last posted! Glad to know that you and Angie still have plans to finish your Pinto project... you two were cranking out some first-rate work, there! I've missed your updates.
I am a moderator on this forum and I see no reason not to revive the thread and continue it "as is"... it is the same project being done by the same two people. In fact, as far as I'm concerned, the gap will serve to remind others that these projects DO take time. If any of the other mods disagree, I'm sure they'll let me know, but I truly don't see a problem with it.
Once again, welcome back!
Dwayne :)
Hi Dwayne, thanks for the welcome back, (hi again) this time will be here for longer... lol. that poor car, every time I go into the room in the barn where she is sitting on blocks I want to spend 2-3 hours working on it, however, the reason I am in that room is to get a wrench or something for some other project.
over the last while I have placed in the steering wheel, set in the motor, got all the dual exhaust ready to weld and bend into place. Purchased a small electric fuel pump (made a plate for the block to cover the block hole) Placed in the rad, had to make a spacer for the carb to lift it for the throttle throw. Placing in a different 2 barrel so had to fab up something for I couldn't buy anything that would fit.
over the last 2 years we have still acquired a few new things for the car. Angie didn't think we should place in that old wooden steering wheel so I found a ralley style wheel that was for sale from a capri, so the car has a black wheel now. Angie has cover the console with that same nice red vinyl that is on the dash.
Last year at work I was able to bring home a non used self recovering sand blasting cabinet that I was able to get working with my compressor to blast the pieces that would fit in the doors. (IE. air filter holder, head light holders...)
Last year was able to get a 77 like ours for a parts car, all glass is in great shape with 2 sets of the side glass and perfect pop out top and back glass.
Just a mile from us we found another guy who is doing a V8 conversion (302) in an early 70's car. His car was an original granny owner with low miles in real nice shape. He is a real gear head, he was showing me how he had recut the front end and welded it back to make the handling better with the weight displacement for the motor to make her safer in driving. Also he has taken an explorer rear end to beef up the pinto's, shortened it and then bolted it in. I forgot to ask him if he knows about this site. Will have to ask next time I stop in and chat him.
How have things been with you? keeping the shiny side up?

I'm okay, but just can't find the time to do anything with any of my cars. I ended up moving my handicapped (spina bifida) sister in with us once my mother was no longer able to continue as her caregiver due to Alzheimer's. Mom is here too. That's on top of my wife being disabled from the stroke she had five years ago. I have my hands full trying to help all of them be the best they can be, and that doesn't leave much time for me and my toys. Not complaining... just stating facts. It's been nearly three years since the Pinto or either of my old Lincolns have been driven. That's just pitiful! I guess I'll get back to them someday maybe. Don't forget to keep us updated on any progress you and Angie make with your Pinto... that has, so far, been one awesome project!
Dwayne :)
ARRRRGGG i wrote half a book and went to post a pic and it said it was too large, hit the back button and all the text was gone..... note to self... write in notepad and copy paste..... ok second shot coming up..... (won't be as good as the last one)
hey wayne, take a hour a day to polish the cars and after a couple weeks find a car show to go to. We all need a couple hours to enjoy every once in a while :)
For me it was more finding excuses of why not to work on the car. however now i can feel the need to push to that finish line 2 year break is long enough.... only so many weeds a guy can pull in a garden anyway.
this is what the motor looks like tonight... it is one step forward a 2 back.... figured out the hoses now it is the sending unit for the gauges that are giving me pains... there is an adapter one that needs to go into the water passage first. and all the threads that are on the water neck are all the same size and too small for the adapter, so looks like I have to pull it apart and take it into work and get some help from a machinist and re-tap it bigger... nothing is ever easy. (see pic(s)) (IEQUUS gauges in case anyone was interested or has the same idea of putting them in) somehow I am sure that I am not the first person to encounter this problem so if anyone has any insight and how you fixed it please let me know.
Second thing to conquer is the MSD ignition. ( i will ask this in help also) but what wires get hooked up to the modual (besides the obvious ones) I am talking from the wire harness in the car. And what is this silver coloured box with these 4 wires? do I use these for the ignition? I wish that I had set this part up 2 years back because I could have swore that I had it all figured out... LOL
thanks
Completely ignore all my chatter about the water sending unit probs... 2 years is a long time to let a project sit. I was looking through a box today and found a set of adapters for the water casing. at least that is one thing that I don't have to worry about now. And I was tired last night when I was putting it together so add the 2 together and bingo brain fart.
LOL
Things are ticking along. Have all the ignition set up, redone most of all the wire looms, wiring, hoses. Now working on setting up the electric fuel pump, (making a place and running the tubes/pipe) placing into the wiring an inertia switch out of a ford ranger just in case to kill the power in an emergency.
Angie and I are booking no work for the first week of July so we can paint the car!!!! finally!!!!
the Motor section work is 95% done now. just exhaust and fuel to work on now!
We have been working on the car all this week to prep for paint, hopefully today this ol gal will be primed grey. just need to wash off all the dust and start the taping process.
Finally after 3 long years this car is not looking so beat up...LOL primed grey and the pics are still wet before a good wet sanding.... All I can say is thank god it isn't a Cadillac ... wet sanding a car is hell on the wrists (at least a pinto is small).
In the morning we will tape it off again and lay 2 red base coats down. then let her sit all day and dry in the heat of the room that it is sitting in. hopefully be able to retape for saturday's first 2 coats of clear. and this starts the process of laying clear then wet sanding then taping, repeat rinse ect. .... ....
red is the colour of the day...
what a long day. it was 2 base and 2 clears... now we need to wet sand this down and lay out the starsky stripe ... (i know... easier said than done) lol
we have painted the grill red also.
Looking good!!!
Dwayne :)
Thanks Dwayne. seems like a long time coming to get here. and many hours to go.
I was able to find a muffle shop that will build me a set of collectors and I will just trailer the car there after the painting is finished. The fellow said it won't be difficult to do and they will still use all the exhaust pieces I have already bought. (glass bottles, connectors and pipes) I was going to try and cheap out on this, however, no reason to do that on this project. do it right the first time will save in the long run.
how are things with you this month? you getting some polish on the car and taking any cars for a sunday drive?
Cheers
today is white stripe. This still needs touching up however, it has major brite white pearls and flambounce. she is going to look nice in the sun. have to run just wanted to show these. tomorrow will be another day of wet sanding and more clears.... feeling like I have gorrilla wrists.... lol
cheers

I'm afraid not. Mom took a definite nosedive healthwise and finally passed away Monday, July 9th. She was 79. Funeral planning and all the other things that are necessary at these times took up the remainder of the week, culminating in the funeral service and interment yesterday (Friday). She was in such bad shape that I find I can't really be sad about this... she is in a better place. I still have a sick wife and sister to take care of, but the burden has been lightened considerably. With any luck, I might get one my cars out for a spin before Summer is over!
Dwayne :)
So sorry to hear about your mom Dwayne. Like you said though, she is in a better place. Hang in there and life will get better. You still need to find yourself an hour a week.
cheers
today consisted of sanding, and pin striping. doesn't sound like much till you start doing it... there is light at the end of this body work. 2 more days and it will be finished. tomorrow is a tape, and lay 2 clears. wait till tuesday for the final sand clear, sanding and buff polish.
Very Nice! With the stripe it looks like it's moving while its sitting still. ;D
a really nice job! (what really impresses me is that you have a wife who is right in there with you getting dirty). now that is a woman to love to death!
Man, that is gonna look good 8)
Thanks for the compliments guys. Yeppers, we can't wait till this car is rolled out into the sun.
Srt, yes Angie is a sweet heart with a good eye on what she does. She is the one who actually knows all the paint and body work. Me?? I just help sand and hold things...lol. She is a talented woman who loves to get dirty. Her work has won tropheys when she used to paint (customize) and detail motorcycles years ago.
cheers
Lookin really good... If you were out by me I would have u guys do my body work so it would be right lol
r4pinto, thanks for the compliments, it is large volumes of work doing the body, (ask anyone who is in a body shop) many people think it is just grabbing a paint gun and away you go. that is the easiest 10 minutes of the whole project. sanding, sanding and more sanding is the most time consuming and painful. if she isn't straight first then the paint won't fix it. then comes the hours of taping.
we were lucky that a huge majority of the original paint and primers were still in good shape and that saved HOURS of prepping (best to be able to repaint over the original buff sand and prime over) many uninformed people who start out body work think it is best to strip the whole car down to bare metal. Largest waste of time and money one can do. unless there is a reason to take it down that far why do it? all you have done is open up bare metal that needs to be re-sealed and cured, not to mention sanded smooth then skim coated with fine body skim.
we have started the final buff polish yesterday, we will slowly work at this during the week (something called work is now interfering with fun) so a quarter panel at a time...
cheers.
was able to put a few things back together today.
front end... and passenger door is done... angie has been busy today wet sanding and polishing. slowly she is coming along bolt by bolt :) cheers
We are fitting and Angie is sewing the carpets this weekend. here is the work in progress. cheers
was able to test fit the console today. placed in the turn signals (front and back) finished off the rear hatch and was allowed to place on the new tires (wasn't allowed till angie finished all the polishing) which she was able to do today. the car looks kinda orange from the flash being close, trust me she is all red... lol tomorrow will be the wrap up for the carpets and hoping the console will be ready to bolt down.
nice and shiny... cheers
i think that the two of you should start a restoration business
SRT, thanks, If we did that then we might grow to hate it... lol. besides those days are getting close to done, not many guys can afford to shop out there vehicles for work. We are going in other directions this fall and winter. Angie wants to get back into sewing customs for interiors, (maybe rugs) seats, dashpads (we started to do this couple years back before we moved and the wheels fell off the project) just not enough hours in the day sometimes. we started the dashpads when we made the one in our car. Sorry to say at the time those plans fell through. This time though we will make it happen. Then comes the harder part, keeping the customs affordable for the average person to buy and still have us cover costs and a couple dollars for the kitty. See it is a precarious balancing act, however, we hope that between bobcats, pintos, hopefully (mustangs and mavericks) we can get the word out enough to make a go of it.
years back we started down a similar road with Ford Broncos, were we wanted to make custom seat covers (hog ring style) but we ran into a small problem that we didn't own one and ran into a sizing problem on a gorgeous set of covers she made a guy for free. (test set) he went postal on her because they didn't fit right (we didn't know that the seat we used as a pattern was the wrong year seat for his truck) so after that episode it took the wind out of her sails.
She has done many customs over the years but most of the work is hands on where the items can be left at her reach (seats, boats, what have you...) now having done the work on our own car we know were we can push the boundaries and make things fit proper.
Must wait and see where we can take this this fall/winter.
Cheers and thanks for all the compliments guys!!! Posting the work helps keep us motivated... :)
just a few pics of the car outside as she is sitting to get ready for the trailer ride later in the week to the muffler shop. cheers
Looking good!!! ;D
Dwayne :)
first venture to any shop for its first not us work. bang on job for some sound deadening... heehee new pipes.
does any one know of any v-6 2.8 stickers that have been remade for the tops of air filters? ours will be white
cheers
how's the weld quality on those pipes? was it gas welded or ? twin pipes out the rear or two into one and one out the back?
inquiring minds need to know!!!
Hi srt, the pipes are mig welded. straight off the exhaust manifolds, down to the bottles, back from the bottles a couple feet then they dump in front of the rear tires. dual pipes one on each side.
Thought I would add what I was up to today. Last week Angie painted the radio holder we got from fred, and today i was able to tie in the wires and place in the new clarion radio deck. Next to do is the glueing of the rugs and then putting in seats and the interior is close to finished.
cheers
What is that saying.... one step forward and 2/3/4 steps back? LOL
Have the MSD ignition probs all figured out. Have this car purring along now. Still on blocks without a driveshaft, however the motor has been fully broke in and is waiting for the proper carb tuning and needing the vacuum diagram book to get here from ebay. After running the motor for a while I noticed steam in the car's front interior... OOOOPS not good, turns out the heater core is shot.. took that out and will be fixing / replacing that...
Now noticing that it looks like the front seal is making its way to be not good... leaking uhhhg.... do I see a motor pull over the winter?
on the good side... she sounds soooo sweet when it runs.... No car shows this year... however, look out come april may 2013....
cheers all
carpets and seats in over the last week. new A-arms found on C-list to redo the front end over winter.
cheers
Looks fantastic! Did Angie do the upholstery work?
Dwayne :)
Hi Dwayne, Thanks! nope, those are the original seats. still in great shape after all those years from the car sitting.
We haven't started that project yet. very soon i will tie her to the sewing machine.... LOL
Life.... 3 years to this point!!!
We can see light at the end of the tunnel. Here is the car on the road after sitting for over 20 years. It was a nice day on sunday and it was a day for test and tune. I didn't know Angie took this picture of the car, she was following me in case of problems. (the truck had all the tools, oils, and emergency stuff in case of probs) only thing that is bothered is the carb needs fine tuning and there is a air trouble vacuum leak, had to run with 2 feet at stop signs to keep the idle up. besides that.... she ran good. This car is a head turner.... don't know if it was because of the rumble from the pipes.... or if it from no-one expecting to see a red pinto.... this car is going to be fun to drive.
Already have the entry forms for its first car show in April 19th weekend. it is the first show of the season around here and it is a 4 day event.... you park the car on thursday, and can't get it back till after the awards on sunday. the show encompasses 2 huge buildings. they love 1st time cars and there are tons of owner builds with great prizes (not trailer queen mega $$$ shop builds) the mega builds have their own categories.
The car isn't 100% yet, however, by end of the month it will be!!! still needs the final coat of clear, some last minute details for the interior and figuring out air filter system. just running without the hood for now and a chrome circle air cleaner to get the car around....
CHEERS
It's always cool when a Pinto hits the road again after some R&R
new pics first, story to follow
decided to post the pics first because i have lost text too many times while making posts before....
couple weeks back we took the car to a local cruise in, not a show, just a local drive in that hosts these car nights every week.
WOW.... these cars were extremely popular in the 70's every person that we talked to had/has a pinto story. Tons of fun!!!!
There is a huge show coming up in 2 weeks that we are taking the car to. never made it to the one a couple months back.
the car is going to the shop next week for a final timing tune... it is still running off and i can't get it 100%, so this is the main reason for not plating the car yet, (not to mention we have emissions tests that will need passing) so the timing needs to be fairly perfect.
here are the latest pics of what has been done to the car. she still needs a final wet sand and clear, this can wait till later... summer is here and time to find time for this car...
too many things that drag us away from this one now... gardens, house, and the next project being the 302 82 ranger, (not doing much to it yet except time on motor)
thanks for reading and keep the shiny side up while enjoying the summer!!!!!
cheers casey and angie
