Title: Project "Merc-Runa-faux"
Post by: Pintopower on May 06, 2010, 01:24:33 PM
Well, it is not time for my last Pinto project, and wouldn't you know it, it's a Bobcat. Bo is a 1976 Mercury Bobcat Villager Runabout. For those of you that do not know, the hatchback squire-villager was only available for 1976. This Bobcat is one of three known of in the country and by far the worst of the bunch. Since work is starting to pick back up and a house is looming in the future, I am fully aware that the Pintos and Fiats will need to take a back seat to the house and savings. Thusly, I must get the Bobcat squared away as much as I can before that joyous day of home ownership falls squarely on my lap.

This is the plan:

1. Running - The car must be gone through mechanically to ensure a reliable and safe vehicle. This starts with a new brake system followed by a full vehicle fluid flush and tune up.

2. Body - Since this car is a one year only model, the trim will be removed and sent out to be repaired and polished. The metal work will be done and the c-pillar rust issues fixed. The all glass hatch will be installed and the paint will be applied. It will be painted its final color, two stage 1975 Mercury Bobcat Green Metallic. If anyone has a color code I would be thrilled.

3. I want the interior to be dark green on the car, but as that will require a total interior replacement, it will be left tan for the foreseeable future. The dash will be rebuilt inside and out and the color resprayed. All the panels will be dyed their original colors. An inexpensive carpet will be installed and the front seats will be recovered with the original material.

So the project begins again...

Wow!  What a rare car!  Really doesn't look to be in all that bad shape... certainly better than the one dave87 was thinking of resurrecting from the wrecking yard!  Good luck and keep us posted with your progress!

I wish you much success on restoring her to former glory. Ah yes, I definitely know the joys and sadness of completely dismantling one of these cars - and you are heading in that direction. Best wishes!!

Looking forward to see this one restored and on the road again! :D :D :D

This is a Bobcat though, dwayne, the one in the yard is a Pinto. Woodgrain was used more on bobcats than Pintos.

It looks pretty complete compared to the Pinto you were looking at.  It should make an interesting project, and certainly a rare one!

Alberto that is a project worth undertaking however;  as to the house issue.

You will need to get a somewhat reinforced 'lap' .  (couldn't resist!)

Well thanks Phil! Do you have a scan of that so I can see what the colors look like? I just bought the PPG paint swatches for Mercury 75-76 so that should put a face with the name.

Thanks SRT!

popbumper - My sister (sirhugh) has asked me to clarify your nomenclature in regards to calling a car "she" or "her". My sister and I feel that wagons are Female, where as sedans and hatchbacks are Male. I mean come on Chris, how do you think they make new cars?

dholvrsn - it runs amazing. Since I adjusted the valves, new plugs, plug wires, cap, rotor, distributor (broken vacuum advance and bad bearing), fuel pump, gas tank, lines, carb, coolant and oil flush, new 3 core radiator and a thermostat, the car is one of the most silent and powerful V-6's I have ever driven. It really blew me and Pintony away.

dga57 - this is by far the nicest pinto I have ever purchased. Should be an easy build, since I have restored these guys:

>>>My sister (sirhugh) has asked me to clarify your nomenclature in regards to calling a car "she" or "her". <<<

Beware of the "Thought Police!"  The proper, politically correct term would be "Vehicular Resource" for all and any vehicle.  You are not to discriminate between car type, function, engine size, engine/transmission type or country of assembly and least of all - car color.  You also need to give a percentile allotment in your fleet for "Disabled Vehicles" (Note Pinto owners should have little difficulty meeting this mandate).

There should be no more manufacture specific car meets.  It is time for Multi Cartural Day!

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Oh.., and.., yes your cars look great too.

Title: Re: Project "Merc-Runa-faux"
Post by: Pintopower on May 23, 2010, 01:34:48 AM
I am a stickler for fluid flushes. When you own 12 running cars, they NEED to be kept that way. My secret: Get ALL fluids flushed every two years and sacrificial anodes in the cooling systems. Ok, manual transmissions and rear ends aren't really that important but everything else is.

So, the Bobcat went off to get his fluids flushed. When I replaced the brakes I flushed those myself so much like ALL of my cars, the fluid is clear as water (I like to point that out to people, I am kind of an butt).

The cooling system, on the other hand was a nice dark brown. The power steering looked like oil and the trans looked like maple syrup.

They needed to power flush the coolant three times to get it clean. I installed a new thermostat and stainless bolts. The car didn't seem to have a thermostat... for some reason... :-\

The trans got a full flush and filter change. It's a C4 too. I was glad to see that.

The jerky and chattery power steering is now smooth as silk. Nothing quite like brand new hydraulic fluid.

The 8" (with traction lock, how did that happen?) got a new front seal and a gear oil change.

I then reattached the brand new (and pretested, what you think new means it works?) heater core.

The car got a new 7  lbs Rad Cap sacrificial anode radiator cap (just like the rest of the herd). I run 7 pounders with over flow tanks. No reason to over stress the cooling system and so long as your car stays under 220 you will be fine. If not, then you have another problem.

http://www.stang-aholics.com/ShowItem/105598%20%22Rad%20cap%22%20w/sacrificial%20anode.aspx (http://www.stang-aholics.com/ShowItem/105598%20%22Rad%20cap%22%20w/sacrificial%20anode.aspx)

I went to pick it up with RacerX and it turned out he had never driven a V6 before. And, now, here is the funny thing. I own two other V6 Pintos and I must say, this Bobcat is really fast! Romp on it and it will spin the tires. I don't know what it's deal is. It's a 3:18 car too. Who knows. Maybe its all those years of no maintenance and Pennzoil.

Here was the only shot I was able to get whilst RacerX blasted away from my sisters Nissan 720.

Next is the glass-back conversion and then prep for the paint shop this week!

What have we learned? Flush your fluids often! Brakes and coolant are crucial! A clean and non corrosive coolant system will save you thousands in time and money! A clean and water free brake system is safe and saves money!

the 3:18 traction lock must be a common thing for a bobcat as mine is the same.

no just a 4 banger  i took it to a local shop  and had thenm service it a couple years ago  when they checked the rearend fluid it looked like "watery oil" so i ask them about it and he said it was a "posy" additive in it  he could tell by smell. then showed me by spinning the wheels.  but it is only a 6.75 rear end.

i like the tan on tan spedo cluster  i had though of doing that with mine insted of the  blue and black  i even painted one but the blue was not the right shade.  i see you put pinto lights on the back   hope fully it is just tempoary  what have you figured out about the  wood vynal ?

Phil, I also like the Dash area. It was easy for me to make it match since I resprayed the whole dash.

The pinto lights are temporary, I just want the kitties lights safe.

As for the vinyl, 3M makes 7 or 8 different styles. I will be going with the darkest, it look closest to the stock Merc style.

Well, another day and another mess that I sorted. I sanded, prepped and painted all the remaining interior metal on the Kitty. All done in SEM Light Buckskin and SEM primer with Bulldog adhesion promoter. It all came out amazing.

Before:
After:

Then I sorted the truck load of bright trim and chrome that a Bobcat has. Here is about 3% of it:

From there I moved on to what I know I didn't want to do, the floor boards.
Nice carpet:
Nice rust:
After I wire brushed it opened op a few dozen holes. Some one grab the welder! PINTONY!
The drivers side was infinitely better.
The reason for this was that the rear passenger window was missing when I bought the car. I was told that about 20 years ago it was broken; and left that way. Nice.
Note to self, install matching back window that is in my collection of parts.

Then I moved onto the all glass conversion.
I got the parts from member on here. The install was pretty straight forward after I figured out what I was missing. I saw that there was a metal welded to the body that I never noticed. I just made one and I will weld it up tomorrow...where the hell is Pintony, he was just here... Hmm...
Here is the parts car with the metal part I made:
Mine is just a strip of steel that I need to tack weld on.

Next I need to drop off the chrome and aluminum, and then the Kitty is out for Paint and extensive body work.

And not to go astray from the original point of this posting...but I noticed Phils Toys that your Bobcat has white slotted mags. I have a set of factory mags that aren't in stellar condition and I don't know how to restore them, but painting never crossed my mind until I saw your mags. Were they painted or powder coated or what from the factory? My white '76 would look good with white mags with the black paint stripe and red centers... just thinking. Sorry!

Becky,
Yes you are right, I didn't mean to destroy Bo's seff esteme but when he is with his sisters and other brother, he just looks pathetic.
Yes, there is a tiger on him in the first picture!
That is Fiat!
Lovepants72 and I bought an old Fiat dealer inventory a few years back and she came with it! She was found as a little kitten by the owners years ago and they fed her, fixed her and she stayed! She will NOT go in the house here. She hates it. She loves the barn with the cars so I need to double cover them! She prefers the Fiats over the Pintos, but hey, a warm hood is a warm hood. Pintony and her are very close.

Nice Phil, I saw that on Cookieboys site a while back. I still can't really see what you are talking about. I guess you better grab the fam and drive her out here so I can take a closer look! What you think about that Becky?

Beegle, anything to inspire! Glad I could help. Those wheels on Phils car came powder coated from Ford i think. Either way, that's that way to go. I had a set done recently.

I'll have to check in on getting them powder coated, I think it looks really good and would be a good road to go down for restoration of the wheels instead of investing in a better set. Thanks for the info!

Becky,
Yes you are right, I didn't mean to destroy Bo's seff esteme bu when he is with his sisters and other brother, he just look pathetic.
Yes, there is a tiger on him in the first picture!
That is Fiat!

Lovepants72 bought and old Fiat dealer inventory a few years back and she came with it! She was found as a little kitten by the owners years ago and they fed her, fixed her and she stayed! She will NOT go in the house here. She hates it. She loved the barn with the cars so I need to double cover them!

Here is my CW with them on:

What do I think about what... that gorgeous tiger draped on your Fiat or Phil coming out to sunny California with the family? lol.  ;D

phils toys,
You bought that Bobcat? I remember when that was for sale! RacerX and  I were in love with it!
I see the moldings now! Christine had those when I bought her in '96. They were just part of the body protection group when applied to the squire. You can see them here. They were factory and brown:
That was the day I bought that mess. God, ok that brings back bad memories. Lets look at this now:
Ah... Now I feel better. Any way, I do want to fly out to Carlisle but work has been bad (non-existant is more accurate) so I will be saving to drive the Pangra out there next year.

beegle55,
Not a problem!

blupinto,
I was talking about Phil coming out. I mean, how can we argue how adorable Fiat is. No question there! ;D

Well that is just great to hear! I wonder where some of these cars go!

I degreased and cleaned Bo today. The engine bay turned out rather nice. I pulled the condensor to get it checked/repaired/replaced and scrubbed behind all of that also. Then I taped the doors shut and drove him to my paint shop to get stripped and prepped for paint.

Nice and clean:

How about a factory crank back sunroof?  I was going to cut the roof off anyway before I scrapped the car.  Not sure how I would ship it to you though....

Well all the body work has been done. The roof rack was ditched since it caused EXTENSIVE rusting to the roof. The hatch area was modified and the pinch weld changed to the 77-80 style.

Alberto, did you replace the hatch seal or are you still using the original?  The one on my 78 glass hatch has shrunk some so I had to seal the lower corners to keep it from leaking.  Just curious to know what you are using.....

75bobcatV6: No i just polished the center chrome piece and painted the rest argent.

Tigger: The hatch pinchweld was modified to be like a 77-80 pinchweld. The difference is that the 71-76 have a lip that allows the gasket to be installed from the top rather than the side. If you slice that off you will be able to use a ford focus seal like you can use on the wagon hatch. It is nearly a perfect fit. Hosed it down and there were no leaks.

dga57: Thanks!

Some more updates, I have gotten Freddy's passenger compartment carpet and load bay carpet done. It was dyna-matted first and then a layer of recycled padding went over that. I did the head liner and visors (my Fiances' dad did them) plus made a steering wheel for him. The rim is cracked so the next thing is vinyl wrapping and to have the front seats done to match the rears with the correct brown plaid Merc. interior. The car has all new door and window seals from Greensales (the only place you should get anything Pinto from BTW) and next weekend I will be assembling the doors. The seatbelts were rewebbed at Ssnake-oyl.com in Texas and the Dash (which i need to install) was redone at Just Dashes.  Wood painting will come when my sister is back home from PA. The car will be getting the factory Ford mesh forged wheels with mercury wheel caps.

Humm i just noticed my bobcat has some trim yours don't. Mine has the rocker trim and a piece of trim that goes across the roof right above the quarter windows. Was that just something they added to the newer ones since mines a 78?

I kinda like yours since it doesn't have them. If i paint it again i might just remove those and smooth it out.

Thanks Dwayne!

Phil, would they be interested in parting with them? Send me a message with contact info if they are.

Bigtimmay - Because mine is a "Villager" hatchback with the wood decals, it did not have the rocker molding. As for above the quarter window, do you mean the drip rail? Mine had it but it was plastic and badly deteriorated. I have stainless ones for it.

Title: Re: Project "Merc-Runa-faux"
Post by: Pintopower on June 03, 2011, 05:29:12 PM
R4 Pinto - Yes the wood will be back on soon.

So the trim is all back on! Every inch has been all polished and repaired. The interior is all in minus the new dash and the recovered front seats (to match the rears). It is looking great and running great. You will also notice i ditched the full size spare in favor of space saver so that I could have a flat load floor instead of the ridiculous hump that the standard cars have. The door panels were cleaned and painstakingly masked off. Then I prepped and dyed them. They are slowly puffing back up as they have had stuff on them. The windsheild rubber was changed as was all the rest of the rubber in the whole car. I can't wait for the seats and the dash to go on! Plus the wood and wheels will finish it all off.
