Well, I've had this pinto since I was 14. Got it because my dad bought it for my sister to drive and she didn't want to be seen dead in it so he said I could have it and he had a 289 we could put in it. So I thought yeah why not and ended up restoring the whole thing, painting the underside and everything, interior is all redone, pretty well ground up restoration about 90% done.
Well, ends up I got to like trucks and had to many projects and it got put on the back burner. Soooo, 18 years later! I decided its been sitting long enough and I'm finishing it up. Got new wheels mounted today and working on putting 2-1/2" stainless exhaust and flowmasters on it thats why its on jack stands. Anyway, here is a pic. Let me know what ya think

I was posting first to him, Kimmy. You cut me off! :cheesy_p:
Great looking restore there Mark. good looking wheels too. There is only one problem with your picture, now we want more. You can't just show one picture, that's mean. :welcome:
Awesome Mark, you should be proud, thanks for sharing. If my wagon looks half as good as yours when I'm done.....

Convince? There's no need for convincing here!!! LOL I am on the hunt!!! Just need the right deal at the right time!! Any one want to trade a fixer sedan for a fixer wagon? LOL ;D
nice Wagon as the others stated, NEED MORE PICS!!! btw :welcome: :welcome:
:welcome: aboard! VERY cool wagon!
Dwayne
Thanks everybody :o I'll try to get some more pics later today. The engine isn't much to look at right now because I have my heads at an engine shop getting ported and putting bigger stainless valves in it. I just have some old heads on it right now so I can mock up the exhaust. Getting pretty excited since the last time I drove it was when I was 14 and it had a 4 cyl with a rod knock! :o

Wow, sure is a nice looking wagon!! I love the interior!!
Becky, look, no shag!!! ;D
very nice wagon. I need no rims atm i have those already, i do need the centers tho
I missed that you are getting rid of the rims! LOL Just overwhelmed by the great pics!!
I would love to get the rims and centers, but shipping would cost an arm an a leg on something like that!!! Bummer!!
Thanks for the compliments! I'm giving the tires to my brother but would like to get rid of the rims. Shipping is a pain in the :showback:. Probly kind of pricey. The center caps are the reason I ended up getting different rims because they are pitted pretty bad and with the rest of it looking as good as it does I figured I couldn't some bad lloking center caps! Plus I just love the look of the wheels I picked. I'll get more pics up as I go.
I should be getting my heads back within a couple weeks so when I get the motor all together again I'll get pics up! ;)
Mark:
My Rally wheel center caps are cruddy, too. I >did< find ONE NOS unit recently - for $65. I hope I can restore my other ones at a good plater.
I gotta ask - how/where did you get such a nice dash cap?
Chris
It was on a parts car I had years ago and I just painted it to match the rest of the interior.
:hypno: I am in love with your metallic green interior. The dash cap is to die for! :hypno:
Thats funny, I didn't know the dash caps were so hard to find! :o The interior vinyl is just like the original but I picked out the material for the inserts and door panels. I liked it alot better then the plaid! :hypno:
Yes, dash caps are non-existant, hard to repair, and the usual option is for a cosmetic fix (slap a plastic piece on it)!
Chris
As I said earlier, great looking car. Thanks for the new pictures.
As for the engine, when you do the engine pictures, could you get shots of your motor mounts and tell us what you used?
I used mustang II motor mounts. Bolted them right on.
Here a few quick pics with my phone. They are the mustang II mounts with a little piece of angle iron bolted to the bottom side and bolted to the frame. I gotta clean the old girl up, its dusty from sitting for 18 yrs. :hypno:
Oh and I also put a mustang II 8" rear axle in it out of the same car I got the motor mounts off. It's got 3.55 gears right now but thinking I'm going with 4.11 limited slip after I drive it a while. I just know I'm going to need all the traction aid I can get!
You were lucky to get thoses mounts. I asked because those are in very limited supply and /or VERY expensive. A few of the other guys here are doing research to find a alternative mounting system, so have went to a motor plate. I'd like to stay old school if possible. Thanks for the pictures though.
Chris my daughter bought a black dash cap 2 years ago from JC Whitney. Fred :)
WOW!!!! Wonderful wagon, it looks fantastic. I'm sure it'll be a head turner once she's on the road. Good luck with your restore....Larry :police:
289, your wagon is awesome!
What are you going to do for headers? I swear that engine looks small in there. LOL! Cant wait to see some more progress!
I had a 74 wagon for a little bit. I bought it with a blown 2.3 and had every intention of fixing it. It was metallic Blue with silver/blue flames. It had 13in centerlines a full custom interior. It was a Really nice custom but the paint had checked all over the car. I eventually had to give it up though. :'( Funny thing is i saw it 3 years later on ebay. SIGH!
I had it from 94-99 and never got anything done to it. :embarassed: Just never had enough money or time to have 2 project cars I wish i would have as i really like the early wagons.
Nice wagon. Love the wheels! Want those for my car.

I'm using some stock 289 exhaust manifolds because there is so little space! I would do headers but don't want the ones exiting out the fenderwells and all those crazy looking ones. I may lose a little power but so be it.
Thanks for all the compliments guys! I'm definitly getting excited to get her fired up!
78pinto did a writeup back in 2005 on conversion 74-80 V8 swaps. One idea he had was using the shorty Mustang headers installed backwards(exit from the front) and ran pipe under front suspension. That is how I'm doing mine.
Wow!!...a cleaner version of a green Pinto wagon!! :surprised:
This one's just like your's except its got a date with the Sawzall and the torch!!

I thought about running the exhaust out the front and under the front suspension but it would way to low for me. I wouldn't feel comfortable with it being so close to the ground. Mine is going to work out fine. All mandrel bent stainless 2.25 pipe. My manifolds my be somewhat restrictive but so be it. She will still scream. ;D
im hopin hes just making a drag pinto out of it... it looks too nice to cut up.
Yeah - what he said - that's too nice of an example.....

Well, I've been waiting for 2 months now to get my heads back and the guy hasn't even started yet so I ended up getting a different motor to put in for the time being. Should have the motor in, in the next week or so and she will be alive!! Finally! :o
Hoping to have the motor in today.
Here is a pic of the motor from a few days ago.
Glad to see you are still working on it. A lot of people start a V8 project and then quit when everything doesn't drop right in place. Love the looks of that wagon! Keep us posted... :read:
Oh yeah! The motor is in! Got it in last night. Should have it running in the next few days. Can't wait to hear it run!
Just wondering what mounts you used, looks like it was factory installed. Good job!!
Used mustang II mounts. Posted pics a page back I believe. Thanks for the comments!
Tomorrow should be the day the old girl fires up for the first time in 18yrs! Here is a crappy cell phone pic of what it looks like now.
looks good to me. let us know how she does when you fire her up
Very nice work, very nice! Looks just like you checked the V8 option box when ordered new! :fastcar:
Thanks guys! Just have some little things to wrap up before it fires but it should happen tomorrow unless something comes up, if so it will be saturday but damn I'm getting excited! :hypno: :hypno:
Wow, that's a real looker :hypno:. Bet she'll drive like a bat outta hell when done!!
Chris
Well, got it to fire friday night late but didn't have a ful pump hooked up so I let it sit til after work on sat and then no spark! It's got some major wiring issues that I will never figure out. If there is one weakness I have its wiring! Just doesn't compute in my head! throwing in the towel until this coming weekend, I have a buddy thats an electrical genious and he's gonna come over and figure it out!
Won't be long now guys! Got the wiring all figured out, now I'm waiting on my starter to get fixed. Had an automatic trans starter in it and destroyed it when the motor started! Whoops! :hypno: Waiting on some brake calipers too because from sitting so long they get froze up along with the rear wheel cylinders. Should be moving tomorrow! Yeah baby!! :hypno:
Wow, that is one fine looking pinto!
I had a '76 wagon that I put a 289 in and I used the stock exhaust manifolds as well. The tiny bit of performance that may be given up is not a huge loss when compared to the ridiculous amount of power you are gonna enjoy.
I tried to drive mine in the winter just one time and the brakes were just not enough to keep the back tires from wanting to start turning when it was in Drive, even at idle.
I guess it was not a winter car.
I hope you enjoy yours, it looks beautiful!
very nice. :)
Thanks guys! Getting my starter tomorrow, it was finished today but didn't get a chance to pick it up. Soooo, tomorrow it should run and move! ;D
:'( :'( Well today was my happiest day with the old girl, I got it running but then got a rod knock! Unreal! It's my buddys motor and was running strong as hell and all of a sudden started making some horendous noise and I shut it off. Back to the drawing board. Man was she fast though!
Duuude Sorry about that. :'( Well back to the drawing board. Dont scrimp though, go through the whole thing and check the clearances when you start the rebuild. Check for a bent crank, bent rods, and tight journals before you just throw new bearings in and go. Also check for contaminiation in the filter housing by cutting it open. That might give you some clues as to what went wrong.
GL!
sorry to hear the bad luck, it you were running stock cast pistons could have cracked or broken a skirt. i have done that myself. oh well its fixable. good luck
This is just a temporary motor until I get my other one done so it's not that big of deal. Just putting some bearings in should get me by for the rest of this season unless I see something majorly wrong.
Wow what a pain in my butt! I found out my problem with the motor. I gave it a compression check and found #4 cylinder had no compression. Tore it all down today and found a possible bolt in the cylinder and a broken piston and bent rod and more than likely bent valves!  :hangover: ??? :o Getting the parts tomorrow to get er all back together. Luckily there was no damage to the cylinder or the crank. I have no idea how something got inside but to late to try and figure that out.
On a better note, I got my hood painted and ready to put on. Here is a pic:
Wow sorry to hear that! My buddy bought a 64 Galaxie with a 352 and I worked to get it fired up for him as he does the body work and I do mechanical in our shop. I told him we really needed to check the heads and give it a good once over, but the cheap @ss said he didn't want to buy new gaskets '_' Long story short we fired it up and it ran good until those stuck lifters bent the rods to pieces and the engine shut down. Not saying anything like that happened in your situation, but after time things tend to go wrong. Good luck on getting it sorted out and the rest of the project looks really really great!
-beegle55
Well I didn't get my parts back on saturday like I wanted but Tuesday I should have the motor back together and running. My goal is to have it done for Thursday I have a car show to get it ready for. Talk about down to the last minute!
Hey i'm thinking of doing some 17 inch rims on my car.....do you know the size, offset and backspacing on your rims and the tire sizes? I'm wanting to get the FR500 rims. thanks, Jeff
http://i936.photobucket.com/albums/ad209/ttfuzz/DSC00075.jpg (http://i936.photobucket.com/albums/ad209/ttfuzz/DSC00075.jpg)
To all wondering about the rims and tire size: They fit great with no spacers, Not positive the back spacing, I think it was 4 in. The tires I used were 235/40r17. Its not hard to figure out what works, just measure from the wheel mounting surface into the inner wheel well and figure out what kind of back space you can go with.
Just a little update, I ended up putting a '98 roller motor 302 in my car with my 289 heads that I had 1.94 valves put in. It's got 10:1 compression and is a monster! Very happy with the performance but apparently I have to link the rear axle, it's twisting so much the tire rubbed on my inner fender well.... Never thought it would do that!!! Gonna have to do some major engineering to get it under control. On Sunday I put it in the first show it's ever been in and I got a 3rd place! Pretty happy but I think the judges were chevy guys and a late 70's nova beat me that was nothing special. Anyway, Just thought I'd give an update and tell ya another pinto has hit the streets again!!!! Good times!! :hypno: :hypno:

Well... as they say: Location, location, location!!!
Dwayne
Just finished up installing a dodge dakota radiator, still having some cooling issues though. I think all it is a thermostat sticking because two days ago I drove about 25 miles and didn't have a problem but yesterday it decided to piss out fluid I think from the water neck. I have one of those made in china chrome water necks on the engine with a tiny little o-ring and I think the thermostat sticks and it shoots the fluid out behind the neck. Going to put a good water neck on it and a fail-safe thermostat today and hope for the best! I'll post some pics of the radiator, turned out great!
All my cooling issues are solved! Had the wrong intake gasket on the engine and it started to leak. Now I find out that I can't get the car to charge unless I unplug the voltage regulator and run a jumper wire on the plug. Weird but at least it's charging now. Putting the car in another show on the 10th! Hopefully I'll win something! If not it's still fun to enter it in shows! More pics to come!
That is one one sweet looking Pinto. Need to see the engine bay :tgif:
Thanks! I'll try to get some more pics loaded soon. Gotta get some internet at home again makes things alot easier!
No problem...I like to see other V8 Pinto's to see what other people have done. Sometimes you something and go...why didn't I thunk it?...lol
Finally got some internet again so I'll post some more pics tomorrow of the engine compartment and whatever else I feel like! :)
Ok...appreciate it
nice pinto wagon mark!! i hope my 74 wagon looks that good after i get penelope done.

Nice wagon and very nice work.
What are you using to prop up the hood?
Looks cool.
Dick
It's the stock hood prop, just looks kinda weird from the angle of the pic I guess. Thanks for the compliments! :hypno:
There's a company that makes gas struts to fit the Pinto of any year. They look better than the prop rods.
OK on the stock hood prop. I guess my problem is that I have a 1972 Pinto and I do not see any props (struts) available before 1973. And because my steel hood has a big hole in it for the blower it can only be supported from the center or on both sides. Will have to work it out after more other pressing matters are finished.
Keep up the good work on that wagon. It really looks great.
Hey there pintoman,
heres what your looking for
http://www.redlinetuning.com/QL-FORD-PINTO-7180.html
I have a pair, just havent installed it yet. Very High quality stuff. Pricey though. However today more than ever, you get what you pay for....
I've installed 2 pair on some late model Mustangs. Very nice kits and they are a bit pricey but worth it. They add a custom touch to cars that use a prop rod.
To 71hotrodpinto,
Thanks for the web site link for the prop rods. Will definitely consider that option. That big hole in the steel hood makes it flimsy and without proper support it will not take much abuse like a fiberglass hood would. If stressed or twisted the steel will crease as all of the center and front inside foundation has been removed.
Those prop rods sure do look good.
Do you have any pics of the underside of the hood?
Here is an old picture that shows some of the under side of the hood. I can take another if necessary. Any particular part of the underside of the hood you would like to see?
WHOOOOA! :o

Hmm good point. However i was and still am, worried about my hood and the prop rods being to strong. So emailed them and asked about it. They were really help-full right off the bat. Told me i could swap them for some lower strength ones if i wanted but assured me that they would be fine. Id send them your pic and what your concerns are and see what they say.
Killer setup you have there! Must be a handfull!
WHOOOOOA is right!!....never seen a small block Ford with a Blower setup like that. Seen the small blowers but not a big boy like that. Very nice!! :surprised:
Taking the car out today for probably the last time! Meeting some friends for lunch, everyone going has to bring an old car so I figured I'd bring her out for one last time before the cover goes on for the winter!

After looking at you pic I have a feeling your hood will bend in the middle from the strut pressure when you try to close it.

Gotta enjoy it while I can before the snow starts! Then she'll be back in the garage under a cover til spring again.
I dont get snow down here lol. and I just heard from the shop I take my cars too when I have no time to work on em. I have to have the radiator rebuilt on the blue one as well as a complete brake system flush adjust and fill. they are turning the rotors and putting the new pads on for me as well. so this month has been fun already. lol
At least you will be able to enjoy your car when its done have fun!
its the fiancee's car but yeah i plan on it lol maybe one day i can convince her into letting me to the turbo swap on it lol
I think my next project I'm going to do to my car is lower the back about 1-1/2 to 2". gotta do some measuring but I want it to be level not higher in the back. Think it will look nice!
well you may be rite but it looks awesome now.
perhaps its just me but I like it Just as it is. looks good to me =)
We'll see. If I don't like the way it looks I'll put it back the way it was. I think an inch and a half wouldn't be bad at all.
In the next month or so I'm going to be pulling the rear end out of my car and installing a limited slip and 4.11 gears! Can't wait to have aome traction!
Got some bigger tires in the back and lowered it 2" in the back and also cut the rear bumper brackets and cut the rubber piece in front of the bumper and moved the whole thin 2-1/2"s closer to the car. Looks sooo much better I think. Been having an absolute blast with it so far this summer!

Yeah I think it looks much better then before, its got a little more tire and a little less rake to it. Love it!
