Title: 78 Crusing wagon restore
Post by: flash041 on February 26, 2009, 04:22:33 PM
Hello all

I Just started restoring my 78 Crusing wagon a few weeks ago.I bought the car new in July 1979 .It was at Don's Ford in Utica NY.I was planning on ordering a 1980 crusing wagon .I stopped by the dealer and found my 78 among all the 79's they had.I took it for a test drive , made the deal and had it delivered to my workplace that Friday ! Its only been driven a few winters ,so while it has rust , its not too bad.Except for July 1997-March 1998 it has been sitting for the past 17 years .It has the 2.8 V6 .I have started going through the engine first. So far I have put new valve cover gaskets on it,rebuilt the carb ,new heater core and raditor, water pump ,hoses plugs, wires.I plan to get the mechinals done first then do the body.I dont want a show car.just a nice looking driver.

Very cool! Good to see another 78 single owner here on the boards! While I am not an original owner, I am the son of the original owner and I most, if not all, of the history of the car. Don't forget, this thread is useless without pictures! ;) :P

I am the original owner of a 1977 Pinto Cruising Wagon also. My wife tried many times to get me to sell it but I didn't give in. Ordered it new in late 1976. Mine is the silver deluxe taped one in the middle of the page. (http://www.fordpinto.com/yourwagons.htm) The mentioned restoration is currently under way. Good to hear someone else hung onto theirs all this time also!

Even with the small areas of rust...she, is, a, BEAUTY! If you get it repainted, will you be keeping that same color and decal (tape) combination?

Wow!!!  :amazed: I too am a Pinto fanatic, and I really wanted a cruising wagon in the late 70's.  I had one child, and thought it'd be a great car for a small family.  The cruising wagon was really nice because it gave you that customized van look (which was popular in the late 70's early 80's), without the huge price tag.  I did drive one at that time, which was a year old. I wanted it really bad, but settled for a 1975 Pinto Squire wagon instead, it just had more equipment, and it was going to be my wife's car. Had to keep her happy.  Anyway, I'm happy to hear of you all keeping your original Pintos, no matter what the model.  I wish I had the ones back I've owned in the past, just didn't think about keeping them at the time.  Hindsight, Huh?????  Anyway, nice car, it'll be great when you get her back to her original beauty and grace.  Larry :police:

I plan to repaint it all original.Instead of tape I plan to paint the stripes on.I also had a 1975 Squire wagon. It was my car before my crusing wagon.I kept it to use as a winter car to save my 78.After several winters it got too draftey {rust holes} to drive.

Where in Wisconsin are you? If you are close to Milwaukee, you need to bring the car to the Milwaukee Mile on May 3rd for Drive the Mile. You will be able to meet up with cookieboy and one of his cars as well as both of my cars and maybe a Bobcat or two. Plus your admission will be FREE.
I cant wait to see it complete and finished.

COOL  ;D ;D  Tell your friends and neighbors to bring whatever they want because we allow ANYTHING with current registration and insurance on the track. It's open to the general public at 11am-3pm. Make sure you stop by and see at least my red squire wagon and whatever Cookieboy brings down. There might be a couple of more but we will see how things go.
I can expect to maybe see the CW at the Power Tour right ?  ;D

First time my Pinto has seen the light of day in 11 yrs! The body man who will be painting my car wanted to look at it to give me a few tips on fixing the rust.I plan to do all the metal work and stripping , and let him do the final prep and paint. My wife's car needed some paint work so while I was dropping off her car I thought he should look over mine. So this moring I put back on my wheels and took my car off the jack stands.  The exhaust still needs to be fixed , but I though my tempoarcrossover repair would hold for my short trip to the body shop.Well you probily know how that worked out! The body shop is about 35 miles from my house.About 20 into my trip my tempoary fix failed and the exhaust was dragging . The only thing had in the car to tie it up was some nylon rope.I tied it away from the broken open crossover so it would not melt.I made it to the body shop and there uded some mechanics wiire to tie it up a little better for my return trip home. The body shop man was suprised that my Pinto was not in all that bad of shape for sitting so long.He gave me some pointers and We left for home a bit loud, and with the windowe down so we would not die from the fumes !Made it back fine .The engine ran great andthe Tranmission shifted fine .Only other thing I found that the car need in universal joints. There was a virbration at times. Feel good to get it back on the road again.

Did you see the pictures of my red coupe  ;D ;D  Just make sure it has current registration and proof of insurance if you are going out on the track. even though I am helping out with the show, I have to do the same thing  ;D  if you let me know for sure by the 15th, I will cover your cost. The only catch is you have to be here by 7-9am. The Pintos take to the track at 10-10:30 with the rest of the Losers Car Club.

I might be coming to Madison for the Hot Rod Power Tour but we will see...

I just want to get the exhaust done.I also want to finish welding up the floor .I started this afternoon. The drivers side is fine except some surface rust from the inside back. The passenger back is almost all gone. The from had a small hole , which i welded a patch in today.I found a new u-joint in the back of the car.Turns out it is the front one that I bought who knows when. All I need to do is pick up the rear one and that is good to go.

If you can drive it or trailer it to Milwaukee, your registration is turned in. You are parking with the Losers Car Club (the one I am in) so bring it as it is. I might be limping my white wagon over there if I can get the water pump in it before then. we are talking no brakes (to speak of) and no front floors  ;D. But it's a V-6 squire wagon with a red plaid interior and wood grain everywhere  ;D. I will be there with at least two cars and Cookyboy is bringing one.

No trailerqueen here! If its there it will be under its own power.I think I may have located a NOS crossover for it. If so I hope to have the exhaust in it next week.

Well I am one step closer.I picked up a NOS crossover pipe today.I searched on line for a new one.I sent several email's to different exhaust sites . I got a responce for an ad in Hemmin gs .The person did not have one in stock , but located one at a muffler shop close to me.It was an old time muffler shop.Just the kind of place to find what I needed. When I got home I thought I would try to remove the old , original ,pile.I sprayed the nuts with penitrent, and All FOUR CAME OUT with no problem!!Now all I have to do is put the new one back in , get an exhaust pipe made , and get a new muffler .

New U-joints are in and it is insured.Ill be ready for Milwaukee in 2 weeks. The interior is gutted right now , so ill have to put in at least the driver's seat back in to drive it.

COOL!!!  I am going out to Jefferson on Sunday (rain or shine) to hand out flyers. I had thought about going tomorrow but I have stuff to do around here before Brian gets here next Friday. if you want, I can give you a call on Sunday and maybe we can meet up somewhere. I will be there at 6-7am and if it's nice, will be there until 1 or so. (MAYBE)
I have floors (patches) in the white wagon and a friend of mine is putting a brake line on for me next week. Either way, all three of my ponies will be at Drive the Mile. The guys I sold the Bobcat to are also bringing something so we are up to six.

We are meeting for breakfast somewhere that morning. I will let you know as soon as I find out where and what time. Either place is not too far from the track and easy enough to find. If we meet it will be EARLY (about 6am) because we have to be at the track a little before 7 we (Losers) are volunteers.
I am probably going to park one of my cars just outside the gate before I go to breakefast so that I can get all three of them in there LOL!!!

I will try and find you on Sunday morning (Jefferson) as soon as I get there. If it rains, I am bring my Jeep. If the weather holds, then I might bring the red wagon. What kind of stuff do you sell so that I will have an idea of what to look for   ;D

See ya Sunday

talk abut a comedy of errors at the parts store!I order my muffler last Friday , to be in the following day, Saturday. It did not come in.I went to the store Monday no muffler, Wednesday , no muffler . I called the district manage for the store since the store could not tell me where my muffler was.The store manager called me Yesterday and said he odered another muffer , and that in fact it was at the store.I went to the store to pick it up tonight , and...... they gave it to another customer that had also orderd a different muffler .They called that other person and he says he will return it tomorrow. So Hopefully I may get it tomorrow!!

Dave it was good to finally meet you today. The pictures of the restoration look pretty cool and I cant wait to see the car next week.

Now dry out, clean the mud off of everything and take a break for a day.

For the rest of you, he just spent the last two days at a swap meet that pretty much turned into a swamp meet. A lot of outside vendors got flooded out last night and left early today. It was pretty bad when I met up with him this morning but it was fun to talk Pintos with someone and meet another member of the group.

Thank you Mark for the invite.I am glad I came , even though my car needs to be painted. It pushed me to make the mechinal repairs I needed to make it road worthy.Driving home I rembered why I have kept my Pinto for 30 years .. Its just plain fun to drive!! I stoped by the bone yark to pick up some pieces thet I needed. My main thing to find was a radio.Mine has the am/fm stero .I did not find one in any pinto , but in a T-brid I did.it looks just like mine except it has 4 speaker output insead of two.I hooked it up to the two speakers and it soundes Great !I will add two speakers in the rear at some time.I did have to make a custom bracket and do a few other mods , but except for the knobs it looks as it did before.

what you accomplished this last spring and bringing it to the mile was amazing. I look forward to more get togethers this next summer and seeing the progress, even if it's not at the mile. I have my projects for the winter all lined up, may even get started soon, taking a bit of a "projects" break lately.

Finally started attaching the quarter! I finished the innerfender work and I am ready to weld.Yesterday I used a two part adhisive around the wheel well and gas filler area. it will be almost as strong as welding, and will be less likley to rust in the future. Those were the main troble spots on the original quarter.

Its time to get on my back and get dirty.I want to get the gas tank back in.Before I do I needed to get rid of the rust above where the tank goes.Below are a couple of pics before i started to sand/wirebrush it off.I did not find and new holes.I stripped off the loose rust and paint then treated it with rust converter.Tomorrow Ill put on a coat of paint and the next day undercoat it.Ill have more pics Tomorrow.I am too beat right now to take them!

Started grinding on the gas tank today. It did not leake before....now I have TWO HOLES LOL. They arent too bad and I think I can epoxy them. They are both on the top one next to the return line the other on the flat where the spare goes. The tank is not the original , I replaced it about 12 years ago, the last time it was on the road.I wont work on it any more this weekend, got a fun weekend with our convertible club.(convertibles optional it was minus 5 this morning ! )

In case you're interested, I'm restoring a 78 Cruising Wagon as well. I am going to see a graphics company Monday to have them recreate the original stripe package for my car. It is the same tri-stripe you have on your photo. Need a set? I'll know where to get them soon enough!

Yes I now plan to get new decals too.I was going to paint them on , they would sure last a long time. But it would just not look right.I have a local company that is going to give me an estimite for making them.Let me know how much you are being charged.Tell them you may have a second set sold if the price is right. The person here was going to use soild vinyl instead of dyed , so it would last a lot longer than the original.l

I did quickley look at the colors of vinyl , and found that violet lookerd really close to the correct color fir the 3rd stripe.I always thought it was purple.

I took the partial stripe kit I have and numerous photos and measurements folks have sent to me down to the graphics shop. They will do it all for under a thousand dollars. With one kit it is a bit more expensive, with multiples the price will come down. However, they also said they could produce the sets in a fashion that would allow them to be mailed to a graphics shop elsewhere for installation. I'm excited about it; I know I'm going to do it. So if you or anyone else is eventually interested, I can fix you up. Good luck on your project.

Got our in the nice bright sun (about 11 above this morn) for a little cruise today!Wen to the graphics place.Have not come up with the estimite for the stripes yet , but matched the colors as best we could from an unfaded area where the stripe wraped around the door. We came up with 3 colors, 3 mfgs.Avery Plum #9440-0 , Orical  orange-red #047 , 3M chrome yellow. Has any one else done this , and do you have the colors you used.Or if painted the paint codes.

Got the roof done , parts of the hood and front fenders.Tonorrow I will take final pics and measurments of the stripes , then remove them.Getting an estimite to have the paint work done. I showed the work I have been doing to a body man I know and he thought I should paint it myself.I would but not sure about the overspray in my atached garage even with an HVLP gun.

Flash on your templates you make.. record where the seams in the vinyl go as well!!  Put a pencil line through the template where the seam joints are and write on the template lap joint here !If you don`t have any seams in your stripe`s forget this part ... Cut capital letter T`s from bristle board  and line the top of the T with the moldings and mark where the stripe`s original placement was with a pen on the T,,,,make a pile of them to go around the hood and back and one side,,,And number them 1 through 25  I put one T every foot on my car..Then when the stripe`s are applied they will know exactly where they went ....This stopped all the guessing looking at  old  photo`s as a reference P.S record where the first T was placed and keep a record of the measurements between each T this will help when you put the T`s back in place to line the stripes too......\  Some of your T`s will have long bottoms,,,where the stripe`s dip down low on the wagon `s body

I used tracing paper and laid it on the car and pencil traces the stripes.I also pencil shaded the body lines door and hood gaps to know where they go.I  have just six sheets of paper.I traced all the lines together so I have all the size and spacing of the stripes.

Paint is more that 3/4 off!Tonight I decided to remove the paint from the right rear quarter.I wanted to replace it , but now I am going to repair it.It has two holes in the bottom and some rust scabs.I ground and blasted the scabs, and they are not all the way through. Also the wheel lip is all intact .So I will weld in new metal in the holes and seal where the scabs were.

Got the doors off today. The bottom on one was worse that I thought.Nothing that a little new metal wont solve. It was a warm and sunny day so I backed it out to clean the garage a bit.My wife cam home and said it looked sad.Have to remove the paint from the jambs, then all the paint is off! Then finish sand and fill, panel by panel.

Today cut the bottom three inches of the outer door skin off on both doors. I was going to just glue a new piece on , but decided to do it right and get rid of any rust in the bottom lip.As you can see the inside of the door skin is mostly rust free except on the lip.The out side also had pretty bad scabs up to three inches up , but not comming from the inside.

Today I replaced the door hinge pins and bushings.I figure since the doors are off it a good time to do it.I used Lawson Products part numbers 29823 door hinge pins and 96096 door hinge bushings. They are listed for Ford trucks 1985 and up.First I groung off the peened ends of the old pins.I drove them out and then drove the old bushings out. The new bushings have a larger outside diameter that the old ones. You can see the old and new side by side . It took a 15/32 drill to make them fit.I figure it a good thing to have the bushings be a little bigger if your hinge metal is a little egged out.I then drove the new bushings in, they are nice and snug! Then drove the pins in.For a little added insurance I put one spot welded on each pin to ensure that wont back out.

Now putting on the lower door skin panels.Rember I cut off the bottom three inches of the outerskin, and repaired the inner flange that was rusted.I bought universal door skin patch panels.Thet were 60 inches long x 5 inches wide , with the bottom edge already folded. On the existing skin i used a air flange tool to make a crimp in the panel so the two panels would fit flush and require miniumun body filler.Like the quarter wheel lip I used structrial adhiseve.I then put in a few spot welds at the crimped jount for good measure. Before folding the edge tight I filled the viod with seam sealer. Then a little fill and sanding and its done!

Did you spray your primer in the garage? HVLP? What kind of primer?

How did you do your jambs? What kind of paint? With HVLP or spray cans?

Curious since I'll get to this point in a few months myself.

I sprayed the primer and jambs in my garage.I got the supplies at NAPA The product line is ACME Finish 1 . Ive never painted a car with a spray gun before. I just studied it and Ive been in and around the auto repair business for over 30 years.I bought a inexpensive spray gun lit on ebay. $72 for the set of three guns. they seem to work very well, and yes they are all HVLP guns. The etch/sealer primer is the first one to put on. Its a thick primer , i had a couple times where it came out of the gun blotchy, I think because it was a bit cool here this weekend. The filler primer is much thinner . There is very little overspray with the primers. The base /clear is a different story.I used the touch-up gun and thought I would not have much over spray , but after a bit I had quite a cloud !I plan to paint the rest in a spray booth.

Use paint to stripe it. Mask each section individually & use the same number of coats for each color to keep the surface level & then clear it. If you do it right you will have a level surface under the clear & once its buffed you will never think of doing it any other way.

Whe is your next trip down here ? You are past due!

I know... I know... I need to hang out w/my "loser" friends...

...but "the big move" has me "busy" all the time trying to get organized in the new place. This year I will only be able to "road trip" on the holiday/long weekends and this 1st one it is unlikely I will be able to get away  >:(

I hope soon... just don't hold your breath as it could be awhile  :'(

When ever you can make it.  Got really busy sanding the second layer of filler primer today. After that I spot primer the spot i spot puttyed. The I had a " critical eye" look at it ( my wife) to point out the flaws. Then more spot putty. Looking good! Just about ready for final sanding before paint!

a set back tonight.I got two part seam sealer for the drivers side drip rail.It came out of the tube really hard, and lumpy.I tried to smooth it out but it would not.So after it dried a bit i started to grind it out, and I got black gooey specks all over the car! I cleaned up the mess  and proceded to chisel it out of the chanel.Re sanded the area , and will try again later this week.On a good note I orderd my new tires! got Cooper Cobra's 205 60 13 .They are discontinued but acan still get them.

I have front and rear sheet metal supports for the 77/78 rubber rock guards if you want original Ford parts. They might be spendy to ship though, due to their length.

Good progress, that new chrome strip is going to look great against the new paint! :D

great progress.

the full sized gun makes way less over spray and fog no matter what you are spraying. Noticed the same thing when i was doing the small parts on mine with a touch up gun.  had a massive fog in all 3 bays even with the fans on and the doors open for some airflow.  When we pounded on the rest of the body with the big gun it was far less hazy.

Nice score on the tires too. coopers are great. we used to run em back in our teens. cheap, sharp lookin w nice white letters. cool you found some.

Just goes to show you go with your instinct and take your time!I plan to do the headlight buckets and bumper fillers with the tough up gun mabe tomorrow to have them done.

I got the tires today .They look good.I like the wider tires.I had 70 series before.

What did you use to sand the bumper down with? Electric sander or by hand? I did my front and half the rear bumper by hand. Got worn out doing it and stopped. Rear bumper looks kind of funny half done...
Title: Re: 78 Crusing wagon restore
Post by: flash041 on June 09, 2010, 06:30:39 AM
I started the same way by hand and got wore out as well! I then used a 1/3 sheet vibrating sander, worked much better.I started with 80 grit then went to 600 then 1200.then I sprayed the whole bumper with oven cleaner.the spots that I missed stayed silver the rest turned black. I then resanded it and then polished it with a buffer and compound, then mag wheel polish.

Next the interior. Put in a new molded carpet, It fit perfectly! I started at the rear and worked forward. The carpet had marks on the back where to cut for the e brake shifter and consule.I fit it to the back feet area and rolled it forward. Also for now I put on a pair of slipon seat covers.

David
Where did you get your carpet? Most of the carpet I
see is two pieces. yours looks to be all one piece. That
is what I'm looking for. By the way, your car looks killer.
I can't believe you got all that done in such a short period
of time. Now thats what I call dedication. I can't wait to
see it with the stripes.

thanks Bill. Dedication or insanity take you pick! I got my carpet on ebay from ardvark motors. It is one piece except for in between the rear seats.Like I said it fit perfectly and was easy to install.
