Just a update on the progress on the HotPants kit molds. Things are moving along, as you know I already make the rear spoiler, I'm working on the side rocker w/spats molds now I have the Right side just about done the left side will be next week then the front spoiler for the early cars 71/73.
I'm going to make another front spoiler that will fit the other years so the Hotpants kit will work with all the pintos & wagons.
I started a album for the Hotpants kit progress.

Thanks Dave

It's nice when you have nice clean parts to work with but it's still a lot of work making good molds.

Mike, you are a true credit to our small (although steadily growing) community. The hard work and effort shows in what you do, and if it wasn't for absolutely good folks like yourself willing to take our niche to a higher level, some really neat projects would be hard pressed to come to fruition. I really think that you do not get enough thanks for your time and skills. Once I get my own projects actually started, I hope to join the ranks of the few folks that have purchased one of your products. I will tell you that your pillar pod has made me rethink trying to get a CW gauge setup for my '77 wagon.
Thanks Douglasskemp
I enjoy making parts, it's a lot of work & getting a little pricey today and I hope to make a few Bucks to recoup all the time I have invested in this glass..
I have both rocker molds just about ready they just need polished, I'll move on to the rear spats & the wagon spats next then the front spoiler..

I would be interested in knowing the price when they become available. Thanks to all you guys for the dedication to stuff like this. I'm on a budget, so I'd have to save up for something like that. Keep up the good work!

Map,
When you are ready- PM me & I can help you setup up shop on FP.com to sell your wonderful recreation- if you are willing. Always glad to help anyone who makes parts for our ponies...
Your stuff looks fantastic!
Ok Guy's here's a update..
As you all know I have the molds made from the original Hotpants kit. I took a shot in the dark on the molds hoping the original plastic would be close enough to make mold from. Well it didn't happen, the molds I made are clones of the originals but the originals as you know are plastic and the Fiberglass is rigged and after they cure there's no form fitting glass like plastic.
Problem #2 I didn't have a pinto to check the glass on for fit. My 73 has extensive rear Qt panel flairs so the Spats or rocker won't fit my car. I have a 76 wagon now as a test fit mule for the rocker glass but the rear QTs are so rusted I don't trust the rear spat fit. The big problem is the rocker pinch weld fit It's not close.
So I found another 76 wagon nice rust free car to use as a test fit Mule but I have to go get the car.
Back to problem #1
Now that I have a good test fit car I'll have to make the New Glass ( the first batch) fit, I'll have to cut some reliefs as I test fit the glass, make it fit and make new molds at the same time I can make the wagon rear spats..
I also have a wagon small rear spoiler (Volvo style) in the works after I get the Hotpants kit done.
Since the holidays are over I can devote some time to this project.
I want these kits to fit before they leave my hands..
Mike
Wow, using a '76 wagon as a guide is nice for me, since I have a '76 wagon that will need this kit.... ;D
Chris
That really blows that you have to start back at square one again. I'll be following this closely and hope everything turns out well the second time around. Good luck with it!
i am soooooo buying one of these kits!!! my little orange beast will look so good with it on. ive got 13x5 and 13x7 inch appliance mags on it now and this kit is just what the doctor ordered for the looks department!!! ive seen the little green one on the web and also a red one too, but orange is where its at with something like this! tell me your gonna have a kit for the 78 model year.....PLEASE!!! :hypno:
Any updates on "new" progress? Sure curious....
Chris
Hotpants update..
I know I know, I ran into a unexpected problem with the pinto wagon test fit car I won't get into details but the problem is suppose to be resolved next month.
I've been at a stand still for the past few months waiting for the test fit car/wagon to make sure the kit fits, I don't like complaints!
So looks like I'll be back on track soon..
Mike
Mike:
Personally, I'd rather see it done right than not at all, take your time and work it out. Thanks!

The built date is 4/77.
So how can a '76 have a build date of 4/77, or a '77 have a '76 front end? Really strange, unless someone swapped a '76 front end on it. ???
Chris
Looks like somebody got rid of the sloped rubber headlight doors and swapped in the earlier type, with matching grill.

We pulled the engine & trans last night, it's all cobbled together there was a 1966 C-4 trans the engine mounts are welded in But this car is clean the hole underside of the car is still in OEM brown paint! It's a New Mexico factory A/C car too. The only rust on the car is from dents..
I'm getting the rear QT panels ready for the rear spat plugs I have to add about 8"+ to make them look correct for a wagon then on to the front spoiler that will fit 71 to 80.
What would be the cost of the Whole kit?
Yes, what he said. I will absolutely save cash up for this kit.

The rear spats for the wagon will have to be built from scratch..
I am interested in the front spoiler as i already have the rear spoiler on my car.....
if its under 800 for the whole kit i might be able to swing it =)

Map351,
Please put me down for a set of rear spats....How much and what is your mailing address??? I will send you a money order faster then you expect it. Also, do you have any plans for a simple front wheel well mud flap that would be a subtle compliment to the rear spat flaps???
High_Horse
Ok gang, on the rear pinto wagon spats price is $100.00 Pr + shipping. I checked with ( Pintopower) on wagon dimensions of the rear QT panels, between the 2 wagons I have here & a few ( Pintopower) has there's not two alike. So I'm going to send the rear spats without a finished edge they will be a sand or grind to fit your QT panel fit on the top where it meets the QT panel..
I have to find boxes so this might take a week or so also I'm doing a little mold repair.
Mike
Pictures, please. Don't mean to be ignorant but I am not certain what the rear spats are, there have been a number of pics here of several pieces. If I missed it, sorry - please remind me.

Very nice!!!!!!!!! Question.....Would I get a discount on my order if I ordered a set of front spats along with the rear spats? Could one just put a little incert into the mold and produce a front splash with just about a foot long spat? It is very difficult to make this length determination from the picture so I will get back to you after I look at my car tomorrow.
High_Horse
Oh, YEAH, looking very good - getting excited about these!
Chris
I got the rear fender spats from MAP351 for the wagon. I prepped them and attached them to the body using the existing wheel lip molding holes. No sense drilling new ones. Any way, they fit GREAT! Much better than the original side parts. Plus they are rock solid and just made perfect! I was so sad that I had to sand down the beautiful finish so that the primer will stick. I will paint them Monday and install them Tuesday! I cant wait!
More pictures of the hotpants install are on my Flickr site.

Yes, we all know that I'm special! Hopefully for you, I wont be the only one with then for long!
map351,
Am I missing your mailing address somewhere? I would like to order a set of rear spats. Also, I am interested in a front wheel well spat or matching mud flap. I am thinking that a 12" extention back would look good.I kinda feel like that kid in the charles dickens story that is asking for "more" but I have to ask. The hotpants side molding would not work for me because my exhaust exits there and I was planning to fab a simple metal side molding that I could also use to support a multi-tube exhaust look.

I'm working out the front spoiler now , trying to make it fit All the models.. This cover needs major slicing & dicing to fit but it has the look like it should be there, the bottom of the spoiler is parallel with the rockers so it's not to low but gives a aero look. This is only a plug for the permanent mold.

I had a few set backs, The LS rocker mold (bad mold release) failed to release so I lost over 25 hrs and had to start over I'm just about ready to lay up another LS rocker mold. The front spoiler is getting close another 20 hr's to get it ready for a mold.
I keep nicking away at it.

Yes as soon as i get the molds done.
I'm trying to keep the price of the Hotpants kit under $600.00.
Mike
I have a '78 Cruiser with some kind of kit on it now, it's not a hot pants but looks somewhat similar. I am missing left rear and left door pieces. I loke the complete Kit.
Will it fit a '78?
I am interested.
Ok Gang It's update time. After having some personal family problems and a death to deal with I'm back on track on the HotPants Kit. I have the front bumper cover ( Hi Build Primer today) & the LS rocker skirt ready to make a mold. I hope to make the front bumper cover mold this week then on the the original HotPants (early) front spoiler Then I'll move up to the later year front spoiler.

The headlight doors are different they stick out more than the 77. Just on the Connors on the outside edge on the headlight door. Are your headlight doors like this?

It will be a bolt on, remove the bumper & filler under the grill bolt on the new cover/spoiler as you see it on the wagon.
What about the fit on a car like the first picture?
tinker.
it will fit that too. just change the headlight bezels to the early model and get a grill. the urethane bezels on a 77/8 have a built in flare behind the bumper that wont mate with what map has goin' on here. if you have a sacrificial set you may be able to trim it to fit. no promises.

Wish i had the time to do stuff like this i been really wanting to modify a older 78-80 camaro wing to fit my bobcat since im prolly never gunna find a rallye spoiler for a glassback.
Are you planning on making the Hot Pants kit with either front option-either the original spoiler or newer style cover? I definitely would want the original type. I think the cover you're making looks good but I want a period correct spoiler.

If your name suggests the Pinto you own is a 1975... the original front spoiler for the hot pants will not work for you. The hot pants front spoiler will only work on 1971-1973 cars, 1974 and up can not use the original hot pants from spoiler, changes for the 5mph impact and larger bumpers changed the front ends to much for it to work on the later cars... sorry

It only took a year of watching Ebay before mine popped up. I was thinking about modifying a Stang II spoiler at first. I love that tall spoiler on a Pinto. I would love to have a repop to modify for my trunk rather than the stock one that weighs about 12 pounds. That mother is heavy....

Hey Dave, Mike said earlier that...

front bumper cover/spoiler will fit the early cars up to 77.
Mike
the front end/fenders on the '79/'80 are to different/shape, '77/'78 I think would be a hard fit because of the headlight buckets but if converted to '74 thru '76 headlights and grill it might work.
So If I'm correct (Mike, correct me if I'm wrong) this front bumper/spoiler conversion would be the "hot part" for a '74/'75'/76 and maybe useable on the early '71/'72/'73 but I would be concerned on the '71-'73 because the dimensions and mounting on the early cars is different for smaller bumpers. Mike should know for sure on the early '71-'73's as he does have one to compair/look at...
Mike/Map has the final word on fitment but that's what I have understood (thoughts/concerns on '71 -'73 are my own) from previous posts...
Brian is correct on the 79/80 I'm going to fit this new front cover on a 79/80 front clip to see what needs tweaked to make it work. On the 71/78 this new FBC should be a bolt on with a early style set of headlight doors as stated in a earlier post.
I tried to eliminate all the differences in the front clips so this cover will fit 71/78. All you need is the 2 holes that attach the outer grill/bumper filler center grill support and bottom fender support. The FBC was mounted on a wagon with a built date of 4/77, I have a 73 and the first FBC will be mounted on it soon.

I just hate them big A$$ UGLY BUMPERS and I'm on a mission to do something about it! At the same time have a nice looking front spoiler that will serve a few different applications, the turbo guys with a FMIC a nice large opening, the Rally Guys big driving light openings or brake cooling ducts and a little better Aero front clip.
I have a rear bumper delete on the way too.

a perfect example of what needs to be done to a '77 or '78 to make it work?? I would guess?
The grille is a '76 (my personal favorite). I have 2 NOS ones. The headlight buckets are pre-'76 since they dont appear to accept the chrome trim on '76s. Looks like somebody ditched the endura buckets & stock grille.
Bumper looks killer....I cant wait to see one painted.
It may just work with the '77-8 headlights & grille....
Simply. Incredible. WOW.

Thanks Chris!!
Now for a highly technical question? Will a set of 1979/80 fenders bolt on a 77 uni body? Just looking for alternatives if i can't find a 79/80 pinto close to me.
Mike
Mike
I've got a 77 sedan delivery with 79/80 front sheetmetal
and it is a direct bolt on. Bumper aborbers are a little
different. I have one of your lower valances on it. I think
it might adapt quite nicely to a 79/80.
Bill
MIKE:
Can you explain how this mounts? Are the bumper brackets (on the front) that connect the metal bumper insert to the frame rails involved? If so, how is the mounting accomplished. If not , how is the mounting accomplished?
Thanks, becoming more and more interested as this moves along. Would NOT mind losing my chrome bumpers in favor of this setup.

There's 8 mounting points, 2 where the grill filler attaches to the fender( out board),2 on the center grill support,2 on the upper wheel opening, and 2 on the lower fender supports. You can leave the bumper supports on and bolt a piece of tubing across to connect them for a little safety or just take it all off and loose some weight. I'm guessing the FBC weights about 7Lbs.
From the bottom of the headlight door to the bottom of the spoiler is 11".
Mike
Got the second FBC made and found a set of 1980 fenders.

Mike
i have a 77 cruzin wagon but it will have a 76 bobcat front end on it when i am finished.
Pulled my 73 out of storage today and bolted on the new FBC.

Mold repair..
No matter how hard you try to get all the air pockets out they still end up in the corners.
Mike
Not sure if you tried but I use roven woven strains with some talc powder mixed in the gelcoat for the corners on my molds. I also use it in the corners of the parts.. Took care of my bubble trouble.
Just an idea

so what is the cost of the whole set up for a 75? I SHOULD have the wagon/trunk trade done tomm.
I think the spoiler and such would REALLY set this car over the top. Just need a cost guess-stamate to Texas ;D
IIRC the whole setup was slated to be within the $600 range, but of course there'd be shipping on top of that.
Chris
Map, if one of the front bumpers come out of the mold with damage around the wheelwell edge PM me. Im going to need to trim that area to work with my proposed flares so it can be damaged. Im in no hurry, Its gonna be well into next year before I get that far.
302PintoMan
I'm trying to keep the original kit at under $600.00 + shipping.
Pinto5.0
I've made 2 front covers and they come out nice just need a little sand/file fit, I have to modify the mold a little to add a little more under the headlight for a little more bolt up surface.
If anyone wants a front bumper cover or rear spoiler I'm trying to get the Hotpants done before NMRA Ford Expo in Columbus I can bring the glass with me and save the you shipping! Front Bumper cover/spoiler $250.00, rear spoiler $95.00 this is a 1 time price for the NMRA. Speak up quick i only have 2 made and I'm running out of resin & Gel coat, the next supply order will bump up the prices.
Mike
Hotpants update..I know it's been a wile.I have the LS rocker mold made. The RS rocker fits is good now I'm starting the early front spoiler mold.

Any updates on new glass? I know you were looking into adapting the front bumper to the '79-'80 nose & making a matching rear. I finally decided where I'm going with my '80 & it requires a set of these.
Mike,
Just a bump to see if the front bumper cover will fit a 1980 Pinto sedan? Awesome work, would love to pick up one of these for my project car. Also, any news on a rear bumper cover for the same?
Thanks!

I think this kit would look great on my backdated 74. I have those holes in the 73 valance to clear the extended radiator support and am wondering if the front spoiler will cover those holes. Do you have an idea on price yet?
Joe
Damn nice work! Very cool. Very tempted to get a kit for my wagon but still undecided. I like the look but don't know about on my car.....Maybe just maybe!
have you figured out a price yet?

Mike has put a lot of time and hard work into making these for us that want a vintage body kit for our Pintos and it shows. The quality is fantastic and since I provided the original NOS kit to make the molds from and have seen and compaired the results I am really happy Mike was willing to do this for us. He's also working on fiberglass bumper replacements for the late model Pintos.
These kits or parts can be ordered as wanted...
rear spoiler for hatchback or sedan = all years
sides and rear spats for hatchback, sedan and now wagons (never before available)
and the front spoiler for 1971 - 1973 only

Why did he stop posting on here?
Mike hasn't stopped posting, he's still doing his thing and I'm only trying to help get the word out that these are available.
I purchased the NOS Hot Pants Kit that Mike made the molds from to remake these kits. I wanted one for my car and found it impossible to find them at the time. Once I was able to secure a kit I begged and pleaded with Mike to make these available to all that wanted one and so I help spread the word so I don't feel guilty for begging and pleading with him to remake these for everyone...
Okay so when will be able to order.....

Am I right to assume that this repro kit is still available? Also, I couldn't help but notice that the front spoiler wasn't in the video. Only the rear spoiler and side pieces were shown. It's not a complete kit without the front spoiler and realistically that's the most important part.

yes it's still available, the front spoiler wasn't available when the video was made but is now... I have one. But if you have a 1975 as your name might suggest the front spoiler will only work for 1971 - 1973, this has been mentioned before, with the larger bumpers and changes made in 1974 and up the front spoiler will not work with the newer body style. However all other parts to the kit will fit and work for all years.
