Title: 8.8 rear swap
Post by: dholvrsn on August 03, 2008, 12:32:24 PM
I'm starting to get frustrated with the lack of available 8" parts these days. So are there any 8.8" rears that are close in width to the lovely Pinto?

IIRC: Doesn't the Ranger rear have the meatball off to one side to clear the gas tank?

Then why do the axle shafts have different part numbers left to right?

if it is cant be more than a inch i was going to pull the rear out of my ranger and put in a pinto 8" but the truck sold before i got to it. i had the rear out of my shed and sitting behind it it all looked REALLY close other than the saddle. the pumpkin looked to be right on.

The ranger is the way to go. I'm replacing capri rear end with a 90 ranger 7.5 rear with a 3:45 ratio. Wasn't lucky enough to score a 8.8

I am workin on getting  8.8 posse my self. Will be taking it to the Axle shop to have it trimmed down for a better fitment and to have the perches re-welded into the locationes needed for the bobcat.

yes, check the pics below.  this rear was taken out of a mid 90s 2wd (if i remember right) 4.0 ranger. later fx4 models could be had with a torsen locker, 31 spline, and 4.10s.

Bill, it's because the lengths are different from right to left going to the splines in the carrier.

Would I be better off getting one out of a fox since I want a little wider rear so I can run a little more backspace?

Then with a 8.8 how is the driveshaft length affected compared to a 8"?

Little off topic, but would be a good disk brake for the 8.8" rear (to clear 14" wheels)?

the Disc set for the late model mustangs that have them will not clear 14's.  I have the conversion started on mine and cant put the calipers on it as of yet till I get either 15's or what i Ultimately want 16's.

What would be the driveshaft length be for a 2.3/T-5 with a 8.8 rear??? Is it the same as an 8" rear?

with the 8.8 and t5 i had to have the driveshaft shortened 1 inch. retaining the matching flange on the 8.8 and the drive shaft.
