Wagon Trailer Hitch
« on: June 16, 2018, 03:33:19 PM »
I recently purchased a camper.  My old-home made hitch was strong enough, but i need to have the ball higher for the camper to tow level. I was going to fab a receiver hitch from scratch, but thought Id check to see if I could find a new one that would fit with few modifications. After searching online I settled for Curt number 11485, that fits a 2017 Mercedes-Benz C300. I contacted Curt for dimensions, and was confident that it would work.

I cut the outer corners as shown. On the right side I shaped one of the pieces I cut off and welded it in the gap that needed to be filled.

With the bumper on , I put the itch in place and marked the mounting holes that needed to be drilled. I removed the bumper and drilled the mounting holes.

I reinstalled the bumper. Support is needed at the bumper. I decided to use 5 inch long grade 8 bolts instead of welding on the receiver tube. I fabed two plates to keep the bolts together and used hardened washers for spacers. Supporting here is important, other wise the hitch would bend down under load.

Once it was done I used a 5 inch ball mount riser to attain the proper height. I also added a seven Pin RV plug and brake controller. The hitch fits Perfectly! Just like it was make for it!
