Steering coupler repair using Corevette parts

The plastic steering coupler on my 78 Pinto broke into four pieces.
The coupler is riveted to the flange on the ujoint shaft (towards steering wheel) and does not appear to be available as a separate part.
I used a coupler from a 63 Corvette from Corvette Central, $13, part #562074.
Coupler holes align perfectly.
I also installed four grade eights bolts (3/8 x 1.25 & 3/8 x 1.5) with self locking nuts.
I drilled out the rivets and hack saw two bolts.
If your steering seems loose check the coupler.

You must be talking about the rag joint  ;D   I was able to get a universal kit for about 15.oo but it's good to know that Corvette parts will work on the Pinto

i found a complete new coupler on ebay once complete ..think it was around 140.00 dollars

Hey 1978Pinto,

That Corvette part, is it rubber like the original part or is it made of corded belting, like from the sidewall of a tire? I think I will check out the Corvette site. Probably could have done that first, but it is more fun talking with Pinto guys and gals than it is looking at Corvette parts.

Well, curiosity got the cat. It looks just like the HELP kit I got from NAPA a few years ago. Belting. Not that that is a bad thing, just that I am looking for the NOS rubber for my Jade 430 mile car.

You need to buy the 1976 MPG that the Volo Auto Musem has. Only 4400 ACTUAL miles. I saw the car in person today and will get pictures posted soon.

Good luck finding the NOS piece
