In my 79 wagon I get 18-20 in the city with a worn out carb.

no kidding. since i have no speedometer, i can only estimate that im getting about 10-14. 3/4 of a tank lasted me 5 days.  almost as bad as my camaro...

At any rate it sounds like the mileage was much better than my Pinto... the last time I drove it it took abou 1/8 tank to drive about a mile... but that's with a bad motor, low pressure tires, and no pcv valve, as well as 3 bottles of advance auto parts smoke treatment to keep the compression high enough to run the car.

i am fixing to give her a tuneup maybe that will help, i hav found several vacuum leaks so thats probably causing the problem

How many miles do you estimate you drove on that 3/4 tank in 5 days?

I drive 60 miles per day. Depending on how fast I'm going, I get between 27 and 33 mpg with a 2.0. Granted, the 2.3 with all the smog stuff and the larger displacement won't get as high.

Still, the Pinto only has a 10 gal. tank (at least that's all I've been able to get into mine when it's on Empty). So 3/4 tank is only 7 1/2 gallons. If you drove 180 miles in those 5 days (avg. 36 miles per day), you're getting 24 mpg.

i have always had carb problems since i have onwned the car it get poor gas mileage most of the driving i do
is on the weekends i only drive too and from work thats about it
1/2 a tank and up does ok once it gets below that half it eats real quick

My '77 Pinto Wagon, before I spun a rod, and depending on how much I put my foot into it, got 28 to 31 mpg.  That is with a 2.3 EFI Turbo.

I'm averaging somewhere over 20, probably 24 or so (I don't keep track of it right now).   I'm not using much gas.

I used to get 24-27 m.p.g. when I kept track of my mileage.

Just stay away from the bad gas.  I put some gas with 10 per cent ethanol in my car last week, and my car started misfiring, and the mileage tanked.   As soon as I put Chevron super unleaded (with a bottle of STP) in the car, she started running like a real car again.

re: carbs:  the mechanic replaced mine the second year I had it.  It was getting to where he really couldn't tune the car right (neither could I).  A new carb will make a difference, but I'd get new plugs, cables, rotor, cap, etc. first.  Good spark plugs help.  I've heard mechanics say that bad quality spark plugs will affect the performance of the car.  I've used Bosch and NGK in mine.

I am getting 22.5 MPG on a 2.0 and believe I should be getting better. I think I am going to see what MPG I get with each type of gas. Just put in new wires, cap, rotor, NGK plugs, and air filter (has a Pertronix ignition). Car runs great, but it is running rich so I know that is where I am losing some of the fuel. But I feel we are getting ripped off all the way around with gasoline.

Well, I adjusted my fuel/air mixture and today I got 24.7 MPG. I am trying the different grades of gas to see which one offers the best MPG.
