Turbo swap part info needed
« on: October 18, 2003, 01:46:46 PM »
Next week I may be getting a turbo motor from an 88 T-bird. I will be taking the harness and computer out myself. Is there any thing that goes with the harness that I should make sure to grab? I will be getting the aircleaner box and the sensors that are between that and the turbo. Any thing else?
I was quoated $400.00 for engine, harness and computer. The car was hit in the rear.
Thanks

Grab the VAM ( vane air meter) the knock sensor, the O2 sensor, the IAC Idle Air Controll sensor, the Temp sensor and if you can get it the fuel pump relay.

I would try to get an engine harness from a Merkur rather than use the Turbo Coupe one, it has a ton of wires besides the engine stuff in it.

If you want the ECU to control boost, get the BCS as well.

It might not be a bad idea to try and get the exhaust  down pipe that comes off the turbo. Have one of the guys that works there torch it off right before the converter.

Thanks for all of the replies.
Is the BCS necessary for reliablity  ? I want to put the motor in stock. I dont know much about the turbo engines.I will probably rebuild the engine and do mods next winter.

Im pretty sure they are going to make the cut by the converter, but, it wouldnt hurt to ask.

Like Felix said, use a Merkur harness. Thats what I went with. It's much easier to work with, easier to get out of the car and the T/C one will have a bunch of stuff in it that you won't be using anyway.

Looks like there is alot of people doing the same thing. Now I'm curious about the Mercur harness. Your wright about easy removal. The T/C harness was a bitch to get out without tearing up but, I got it. Another harness means mo money. Well if it's gona help I might need one. Everything I have is out of an 85' T/C. Is this gona cause problems? ???

I looked a little when I was there and didnt see any xr4ti's. There was a Scorpio that had an NA engine in it. I searched the inventory online and didnt come up with any xr4ti's. If I find an xr4ti there on Sat. then, Ill try to get it.Otherwise  Im going to pull the TC harness because it is a package deal. If I dont end up using it, Ill sell it.

Well I was a little disappointed when I went back to the JY. Someone had taken the computer out of the T-bird I am getting the engine from. They cut the harness close to the computer. >:(  I grabbed it anyway and cut the connector off an 88 T-bird with a 3.8. Would it be ok to splice the wires or will it cause problems?

Someone also took the intercooler. ::) Thats ok because I am planning on using an in front of the radiator intercooler. So the yard nocked some $$ off.
The motor came with the T-5 bellhousing, starter, clutch and the fork? I forget what its called.
I grabbed the coil and just about everything connected to the harness. Even got the vacuum tower and some hoses. I got everything from the fender to the turbo inlet.

The engine is sitting in the back of the Ranger. I need to get an engine stand soon.

I think splicing the harness together will be more trouble than it's worth.

Glassman, you'll need a mech. bellhousing if you want to use the T-5 (grab the driveshaft too). The Stock Pinto tranny will work for a while (use the Pinto flywheel etc) I ran 13.88@110 with mine!

The NA v-6 computer/harness will not work but the parts you're looking for are easy to find.

I used an earlier TC harness in mine and re-pinned it for the LA3.

Plan on relocating the battery to the trunk and making a return line to the fuel tank, other then that it's a pretty easy swap! Good luck!

I have the harness for the Turbo Coupe. Just the plug on the end is cut off. I grabbed the connector from 3.8 T-bird. I dont have a computer yet. Ill probably get another harness.

Thanks for the help.  ;)

I'd get a new harness too Glassman some of those connectors have measured resistance wires on them. Splicing them would be a bad thing if accurate tuning ever becomes an issue.
