Maybe someone has a solution for me since the plastic ball was rotted. I need to screw the shifter back in. Thanks, George

Did you try doing a search?  I distinctly remember other members having this problem in the past, which means the information is here somewhere.  Go to Help & Support, located just above the Shout Box and click "Search".  I would keep it as generic as possible.  Try something like "shifter" and see what pops up.  Good luck!
