Lights fluctuates when engine runs???
« on: September 16, 2004, 01:14:34 PM »
On this cruiser wagon I just picked up, the light fluctuate when the engine runs?  Headlights, dash lights, dome light etc.  They all seem to do it.  It is not real bad but it is anoying.  Anyone ever have this happend to their car?  I am thinking the headlight switch could be bad but I don't know ???

could be that. Also could be the votage regulator or alternator. Does the brightness of the bulbs go up when you step on the gas a bit and at idle go dim?

No they don't seem to dim.  They just flicker/ fluctuate when you drive.  Almost like they are pulsating?

Sometimes this can happen with a bad ground. Although is hard to find every ground I would recommend looking for the ovious ones.

I had the exact same problem with my pinto. I'd agree with Brad about the grounds. When I moved my battery to the back and replaced all of the cable, problem solved. At the very least, check your engine-body ground and body-battery ground. The headlights have grounds somewhere up in the front. It would be worth checking/sanding (to the shiney metal) the contact areas for the grounds that you can find. Mine were all rusty.
