Help with alternator removal.
« on: March 24, 2004, 09:03:02 PM »
I have a 1947 Willys CJ2A Jeep with a 1970-73 1.6L Ford Pinto engine in it.  The alternator has failed and I am trying to remove it.  The alternator is located on the drivers side of the engine.  I got the top  bolt off and have unscrewed the bottom bolt 3-4" out but now it just spins in place and I cannot tell that it is moving out at all.  Anyone with a manual or experience????

I am not familiar with the 1.6L engine, but I assume it uses a standard Ford alternator.
It sounds to me like the inside of the bolt hole on the alternator has a buildup of corrosion that is preventing the threads from coming through.
Since you have already backed the bolt out enough for all the threads to clear, I think if you just find a way to pry straight out on the bolt head, it will come out.
Some penetrating oil might loosen up the corrosion a little and make the job easier.
Good luck!
