Heater Core Replacement
« on: November 09, 2004, 10:46:01 AM »
Just to clarify what ive read on this site and in my haynes manual, to remove the heater core, ihave to remove teh whole heater assembly, and to remove the heater assembly i have to dissconect the two cables and then its a matter of 4 bolts from the engine side of the firweall and one bolt on the cab side, and then teh whole thing shoudl come out in one piece?  while its out i am going to replace the wiper arm assembly as mine has alot of slop and play in it, from what i gather, its easy access to the wiper assembly once the heater assembly is out. once the heater assembly is out this is a no brainer.  i just want to make sure i dont have to start removing the dash/radio/etc...

is this correct (for a 75 merc bobcat)? how much time is involved in this assuming im reasonably mechanically inclined?

Assume it will take twice as long as expected. Crawling around the inside of the car on your head is not fun and , as I have discovered, you need lots of breaks as to let your arms recover from the cuts you will get from all the sharp, knife edge metel up in the dash......... >:(

fyi, its about a 5 hour job for someone who has never done it before...  :P

and on the same note, im pretty sure i connected the core backwards, but could someone confirm this before i go and start cutting and splicing hoses together again, i dont think its a big deal and am going to run it this way in the mean time...

bottom hose from the core should go to the feed coming from the carb over the valve cover and the top hose from the core should go forward and into the water pump correct?

A heater core is bi-directional. The reason for placing one hose on one tube or the other is purely for aesthetic purposes. This assumes you don't have a heater control valve. If you do, then the hose coming from the water pump will get the valve.
