gas smell carb help plase

 Well the stupid vette is broke down again so good old Pinto is in charge again. Got some new 13s again on it and its running great ven when the idle drops way too low it still keeps going :)

 But the gas smell :( I looked under the hood the hoses look ok and its only when Im driving with some rpms I seem to smell it.

I took the air cleaner off to look at the carb and there was some wet gas on top of both throttle plates, and in the little well area in front of the throttle bores, semi rectangular. Theres some liquid gas visible down in there but none on top anywhere. I think thats the vent area for the bowl?

 I doubt its loading up because the idle stays perfect for 10 minutes or more no sign of rpms dropping like it would if it was loading up. The carb isnt difficult to do Im just wondering what I missed last time I had it apart.

 Any ideas? This car served me and my family well for 30 yaers is the most reliable  car ever only failed to start 2 times in over 32 yeas I had it.

 It sounds like the Pinto has sat for a while?  The gas on the throttle plate is likely coming from the fuel bowl vent. This cn be from a number of places:

1. The neddle and seat have dirt in them.

2. The needle has a rubber tip that has rotted and gas is leaking into the bowl.

3. The float has gone bad and has a leak (internally).

I'd start by checking the needle and seat for debris. If the tip is rubber and it looks shot replace it (I'd rebuild the whole carb). When you get that far in it will be obvious if the float has a leak as you will feel fuel in it when shaken.

 It could be the float isnt adjusted right?

Possibly, but I doubt it. Most floats setting are fixed and unless something comes loose (on those that can be adjusted externally) that generally doesn't change. If some was in there tweaking things..., then yes it could be an issue.  A bad rubber tip on a float needle can also cause the float to rise. But, that is a secondasry effect of a primary (needle tip) problem.
