what carb should i run?
« on: June 02, 2012, 09:23:30 PM »
Hi all,

I have a 2.0 pinto motor in my offroad buggy.  It has a Holley 2300 carburator on it buy I'm not sure if its the 350 or 500 cfm? The car sat for six years and the carb is thrashed. I'm thinking about replacing the carb with the same thing.  Any suggestions on what cfm or will any other carb work better?
Thanks

Yes.  How do I tell if its the 350 or 500 cfm?

I have the 500cfm version and it has 4412 stamped on the vertical portion of the choke support housing (upper portion of the main body).  According to the links, the 350 should have 7448 stamped on it.

There are a couple helpful threads on tuning these carb's.  Racer Walsh sells a power valve modification that is reported to be helpful.  Search for "carb restrictor" on the link.

The above is incomplete, as there are several models for each cfm class.  Based on some of the web sites, found these model numbers (there probably are others):
350cfm: 7448, 80787
500cfm: 4412, 4365, 80583, 80402

Awesome..thank you for the help!  Would a 500cfm be too much for the 2.0?  The motor is pretty modified with straight exhaust, intake and cam...not sure what cam is in it.  I did do the work...

thanks,
~jw

My experience with the 500cfm was negative but I am a lousy tuner and did not know of the power valve modification.  Other people have had good results with them, see links.  Also a link for a Racer Walsh document that might be helpful.
