Title: v8 swap questions
Post by: bagsjosh on February 08, 2013, 08:31:33 AM
Right now im benchbuilding (daydreaming) a v8 pinto build. The two biggest questions that come to mind are front springs and differential. Correct me if im wrong but mustang ii v8 front springs will work in a pinto. And also the diff width is the same in pre 93 mustangs. Thanks for the help guys.

The rear end is easy, use an 8" rear end and use the front / rear springs from a V-6 Pinto.....No other changes needed. Trying to make do with Mustang II parts is okay but the V-6 Pinto parts fit better because they come  from a Pinto and going into a Pinto. The difference in weight between the V-6 and V-8 is not much.  So it's a much easier set up. Note if you want to change wheels etc things might change.

I HAVE A 1976 PINTO RUNABOUT WITH A 302 IN IT AND CURRENTLY REBUILDING THE FRONT END. O'REILLY AUTO PARTS OFFERS THE FRONT V-6 SPRINGS NEW FOR ABOUT $90.00 DOLLARS. MY PINTO HAS A FORD 9 INCH REAR END UNDER IT. THERE ARE 9 INCH REAR END THAT WILL BOLT UP WITHOUT HAVING IT NARROWED. CAN'T REMEMBER WHICH FORDS THE REAR ENDS COME OUT OF BUT SOMEONE ON THIS WEBSITE CAN TELL YOU.

Depending on how you do your build, ie. what motor 302 or 351with iron or alum and brass or alum rad i would not worry about the front spring yet. I'm using the stock 4cly spring and ride hight is fine..
here is a pic of how it sits..

Jugalo777, What's the biggest 15 inch tire that will fit upfront in your opinion. I also ordered MustangII V8 coil springs. They are an inch longer than the broken coil springs I took out which were for a V6 Pinto, yup both front coil springs broke but anyway do you think I will have any problem getting the Mustang coils in?

even with the inner frendwells out the biggest i have been able to fit is the 155-15.. You can probley get them in but its more the likely going to sit like a 4x4..

Are you using the engine form a Mustang II?  You may want to look into the oil pan issue.  The MII oil pan fits around the cross member, others do not without modification.

This pan fits as well. It's the one I'm using.
