ThunderPinto gets an engine.
« on: December 23, 2007, 10:52:39 AM »
OK...Folk. Maybe I am being premature with this thread but I am going to build an engine within the next 1 to 1.5 years. That is build the engine...I will be getting all the parts together previous to that. Although I have "built" many an engine I am not familiar with all the different stuff that is out there today for a street racey engine that will make ThunderPinto "all that". So FordPinto.com. ...Lets build an engine. Here are some of my ideas......All Aluminium...30 2/289 based block. No tubbing.

That's a nice block. With the 9.5" deck you can stuff 460 cubes in that thing! :o

78Pinto
90% street with occasional strip use. I would like it to do the quarter in 100 or plus with my c4 trans. I don't want to tub the car and I want to use the 8 inch rear end.

MrPinto, I can't go more then .250 additional stroke because of my pan proximity to the steering rack. I would like to go with a recipe that is tame yet peppy taking into account that the lesser engine weight would contribute to the overall dynamic.
It would be rediculous for me to say I want to make a Pinto GT-40. But I would like to entertain the thought. I don't think I can exceed 400 horse or might it be 350 or 300.?

Your goals don't seem to be too far out at all to me. 350-400 horse in a SBF is VERY doable with the right parts.

If your looking for a 90% street car that will finish the 1/4 at 100mph, I would save the $$ you'd spend on that aluminum block, and get a nice pair of 185-195cc aluminum heads (Canfield, TFS, AFR ect.), and put them on a good strong bottom end with some forged flat tops, a good intake like the Weiand Stealth, a good cam selection (I hear GREAT things about Jay Allen at Camshaft Innovations), 600 - 650cfm carb, long tube headers, a strong tranny with some stall, a little gear and you should be pretty much in the ballpark for what your looking for.

Don't get me wrong, that looks like a great block. I guess it comes down to the limits of your budget.

The Alumiium block thought comes from the v-8 verses turbo 4 debate. And I almost did the turbo 4 but this 302 and trans fell into my lap at the time.
Oh...And here is a point I forgot to mention. I can't use headers....Wel l...I mean that I don't want to change my configuration from the stock ex. manifolds. Maybe that is a limiting aspect?
Also, I need to call this World Engine place and ask them what the exact difference in weight is between the aluminium and cast engines.

Cheapest way to run 100 in the quarter mile on manifolds is with N2O.  If you're not going to run juice and you must stick with those manifolds, don't bother spending money on aluminum or big vale (2.02) heads - put it into your manifolds.  They choke everything off...

The speed shop manager here back in the day had a V8Pinto with manifolds on it and he ran 14 flat at 100mph.  His combination was stock 302 everything, including manifolds.  Dual exhaust, a T-5 manual trans, a BIG HUGE Erson cam, and a Tunnel Ram with dual 4's.

Stock heads, stock valves, stock everything except the cam and induction.  I remember him saying "yeah I'm supposed to run screw in studs with that cam but I don't...."

Do you have dual exhaust?  Spend a lot of time on it to avoid a real bad S bend exiting the manifolds, turning down at the firewall, and then heading back under the car.  The better (and larger) you can make that transition the better.

I understand why you want to run manifolds - I do; but headers are so liberating!

thats a nice down pipe.
Better than doing the reverse manifolds and under the cross member.

I'll have to take a closer look the next time we meet ..

If your going to put a v8 you will want to put two support tubes going from fire wall to subframe. Im building a 72 pinto drag car with a chevy 383 stroker. Had to move the motor back 16 inches and will have to add subframe conectors. I had to custom make the the frame conectors. You will also want to change your rearend to at least an 8 inch. One out of a ford granada will bolt right up.
Good luck

Thats what i put in my pinto. The rearend is 1 inch wider that makes it 1half inch diffrent on each side. As far as the the bolt up is the same.I will send pics when i get home.

IMHO--

Well, of course realizing that different people have different ideas of "bolt-in"

Personally, if there is a "but" in that statement, then it is not true.

A Granada rear-end will bolt-in, BUT it will make your leaf springs splay outward at the axle.  Not exactly the best idea if you plan on making the rear suspension compress any significant distance...lik e when hard launching at the track.

Yes it can be done, but there are better ways.
The Pinto I had I gave to my brother. The car was originally my mom's, (78 red Pinto sedan with a 2.3 and a 4spd.) I am originally from Tucson, AZ but moved to Oxnard CA :D
I'm looking for a Pinto wagon with an automatic.

Mine is like that.  I put it in a long time ago when I didn't know any better...  I doubt it's a granada housing, I just grabbed it out of my Dad's parts pile.  The pads are splayed like you describe.  I can't see how I could have installed it and not looked at that....

More recently, I went and got an actual Pinto 8" housing and will put that in when I get all the rear end bushings sourced...

The rearend is wider but were it bolts up to the leafs is the same. Also a granda front swaybar bolts up too.
