Title: Thought I'd put my 73 wagon here
Post by: dianne on September 25, 2013, 07:21:28 PM
In the welcome forums I've been posting my car, guess it should be here. It's closer to paint, maybe next week if I can finish all the dents, dings, and flaking paint. It turned out that someone, sometime must have painted this and the paint was cheap or not applied right. As I am sanding there are tons of flakes coming off. It's causing a heck of a lot of more work.

Well here's Milo!

That sucks, looks like it needs to be stripped to bare metal to do it right.

I some areas, mainly on the roof, hood and on the back of the wagon hatch on the top. The rocker panels are going to metal and the area where the paint is doing that I'll vibrate out with 80 grit and then 240 with the air grinder. I think that will get it perfect. This isn't a frame off restoration, just getting it to look new I guess or as close as I can. The Rambler is different, paint on it was good, just a lot of little dings and chips from being around in storage, for lack of a better term, and that's a pain. The Maverick needed more of all mechanical and stripped to metal and new floorboard for being in a field for 20 years.

LOL, how did I get myself into all of this ahahahaha

Yeah, that's the resto of the Rambler. I have a long way to go. Motor and trans should be back next week. After that the brakes, then to a welder to cut out all the rust and finish the body work and shoot!

Maverick, total rebuild and should be back for stripping and painting in a few weeks also!

This is the car today so far, more to go but had to go food shopping! The rain gutter have rust in the, I'm thinking bondo or putty to fill it in when done.

Dave is coming to put in my door panels on Tuesday and check out the work so far. Pretty cool!

Looks like it's coming along nicely.

Thank you! I want it as perfect as I can get it, so taking me a LOT longer than I thought. Those spots all over the car are actually rust under the paint. I think someone painted it and never did it properly or primed it it looks like before curing the rust.

This one is a keeper. Now all of my cars are keepers :(

Thanks for saying that! Just so much work on this, but it's an old timer and deserves the best I can give him :)

So it will look pretty cool when done! I can't wait, almost there now!

Thanks 74, this will be my first paint job on something this big like a car. I did my motorcycle and that was pretty darn perfect. But of course I'm worried about doing the car, so much to cover. This is going to be a single stage enamel and the Maverick two stage. The Rambler will be in Lacquer and would be the easiest since you can sand out your mistakes. I'm going to go slow on the paint though!

I'm hoping in two weeks. I am getting the Maverick back in two weeks, need that to drive while the car cures. I'm scrambling to get it completed/finished so I can have something to drive! But the Maverick needs to be sanded to metal and primed inside and out, so that has to be done before I can do the paint on the Pinto. I took on too many project cars at once, but I love everyone of them!

Thanks, I can't wait to finish it either!

Had a visit from Dave who put in my door panels also today :-D Great guy and appreciates all the work I'm putting into this thing! It's not far from paint, but dang does it look good so far.

Air shocks went in today and now it's level as it should have been! Woo Hoo!

Some pics with Dave visiting Milo!!!

PS - TELL DAVE TO PAINT THE CAR YELLOW AND NOT RED!!! Yellow was original!

I'll post more later. Dave is getting me a steering wheel like he has, door handles, and some other parts.

Those black panels I had listed Dave has and will be giving them to someone for shipping.

The blue is Dave's Pinto, the brown was his and I was lucky enough to get it! I'm trying to get it as close to new as I can. I had a Grabber Blue Boss 302, talk about wishing I still had that car :(

Sorry to hear about your grandfather. Post those pics :D

These were on ebay. Dave bought a pair today for 60 bucks, mine were NOS and around 55 when I got them, had to get an air kit also, while Dave's had the air kit with them!

Keep looking, they seem to turn up once in awhile. The ones I used were not for a wagon, but a 1 1/2" spacer did the trick actually and they fit like a glove after that!

So a direct bolt in for a wagon? Didn't know that. Next set I'll remember. But that's for a wagon only I guess?

Thanks,

Actually, the shocks are pretty much the same with the exception of that 1 1/2". The spacer made it fit perfectly!!!

But mine sagged around 3" and this was a BIG improvement and better than spending almost $400.00 on new springs. Dave told me that rearcking these would have been more.

Yeah, mainly because no one here does it anymore.

Here are pictures of the new door panels I installed for her yesterday. I didn't think I would ever see the correct door panels on the car again, but they look great! :) Nice find Dianne!

Also below are pictures of the beautiful air shock mounting on the passenger side. The car looks amazing at the proper height in the rear, I didn't think it was THAT low until I saw it at the correct level height! Must ride nice! I can't wait for mine to arrive, and hope it helps the rear sag on the driver side!

I'm lost. You bought 'Brownie', yeah? Brownie, the wagon? So, the shocks should have been a direct bolt-in, or did somebody miss something somewhere along the thread (could have been me)?

Otherwise...yo u need the springs! Glad he helped you out to make it right though. That's stand-up stuff you don't see much in this country anymore. :)

Yes, I bought Brownie and now he's Milo. The shocks are for hatchbacks and I have a wagon, if you look at the picture Dave took at the mechanics, you'll see the spacers that were needed for them to fit correctly. The springs are still there ;)

I'm going to help Dave with his bodywork and he's a great guy! Found him the air shocks. Now we need his car painted bright yellow :D I'll spray it for him also!

Warning: I admitted I probably missed something. :) lol So the shocks went in the Blue (Sedan/Runabout/not a wagon) car, then?

That's a tidbit worthy of the FAQ's (cause it's a 'forum' specific thing (people can Google to get anywhere, but once there, they're lost...cause there's no button that says 'Search.')...people don't know what the magnifying glass means. Or they have to join to search!!! (Ummm...so search once, at least, please, before posting.)

Just a lesson, whipper-snappers...that means 'I can't see what I'm looking for, so I'm "searching for it"! Or...I'm bored...so I'm going to burn ants.' They were, for the record, extremely handy for finding things like too-small fonts in encyclopedias.)

If you want to know how to set fire to stuff with a magnifying glass, just Google it. I'm going back to the UK for cam selection advice. :) lol

The air shocks went into the brown wagon (was Brownie is now Milio). Dave, the blue sedan not a wagon, just ordered his air shocks yesterday on ebay. So his car will have them without having to use spacers. Dave posted a picture from the mechanic's place to show the installation of Pinto air shocks manufactured for a sedan/hatchback/runabout in the Pinto wagon with the spacers. I hope that made it clearer.

I'm not certain what you are saying I did wrong and what I should have done before I posted. Are you saying that I should have searched the FAQs to see if someone else posted something about using standard Pinto shocks in a Wagon? Someone told me on a thread that there would be a difference and spacers should be used. In this thread I was discussing what I did on my Pinto, not for a FAQ, but what I had done on my wagon.

Again, are you telling me I posted something incorrectly on her Sir? Please explain yourself.

Again, I have no clue on the reference here and if you're trying to explain something. Are you attempting to teach me how to use a forum? I run one, I know how they work. Is it a specific rule as to what is allowed and I've broken some rule on the explanation of the air shocks on my wagon? You're somewhat ambiguous on your explanation and I am uncertain what you are trying to get across.

I don't understand what point you're trying to get across. Maybe after you're finished with the UK for cam selection advise you can tell me. Again, this is a thread on my project of my 1973 Pinto Wagon. If you read the thread you would probably have understood what is/was going on. If you're trying to tell me something, just say it...

OFFICIAL NOTICE (I feel like this needs to be made known to avoid confusion later):

I used to be the owner of this 1973 Pinto Station Wagon, previously known here as "Brownie". I sold it to Dianne in September 2013, hoping the restoration I originally started with would be continued, and the car would be loved and cherished by someone as much as it was when in my possession.

Dianne has more than exceeded my expectations with the car and love she has for this car, and it really re-lights that "Pinto Fire" I had two years ago, getting be back into the Pinto Scene and working on my own 1978 Sedan again.

Back on topic, there was a member somewhere here that has used sedan gas shocks on their station wagon (all years use the same shock, same for non-wagons). I remember this because I actually consulted their post prior to attempting the use of my old, but still good, rear shocks from my 78 sedan to hold me off until I was able to source proper station wagon shocks.

When properly installed with the spacer, it poses no threat to the function of the shock, and operates just as it should without over extension.

Once I got the proper shocks for the station wagon, I switched over to those and put the sedan ones back into my 78's spare parts pile for when mine were to go out again

EDIT: Here is the thread I got my info from. Wittsend's reply is my reference.

Of all the Pintos I've seen, the top one is the only one I ever saw on the two wagons. Mine and the 1970 I ran into at Walgreens one day. The shock mount on top is what I've seen on the other wagon. I haven't looked at any hatchbacks to be honest.

I think the initial confusion came from someone trying to make a joke I guess...

Title: Re: Thought I'd put my 73 wagon here
Post by: dave1987 on October 17, 2013, 10:15:02 PM
Wow, I've never seen a Pinto shock with an eyelet mount! Every Pinto shock I have ever seen was with threaded rod at both ends, and I've been under over 20 Pintos (maybe 9 were wagons), about 15 of them at junk yards (to be fair :P).

From the sounds of it, you may have a Mustang II lower shock mount (that's where the eyelet end is secured, correct?), since most of the Mustang II suspension in Pinto swappable.
Title: Re: Thought I'd put my 73 wagon here
Post by: dianne on October 18, 2013, 06:45:03 AM
So you can take Mustang II parts and place them on the Pinto? I had a new Mustang II in 1974, I sold the Boss 302 (yeah I know). I never looked under the car to be honest. Someone told me the Mustang II was based on the Pinto, kinda like the Monza and the Vega. So you can replace the shock mounts from a Mustang II in a Pinto? Hmmmmm

I don't need to change anything I guess, but that's good to know. More parts for a Mustang than a Pinto, kind of like more parts for a 1970 Mustang than a Maverick.
Title: Re: Thought I'd put my 73 wagon here
Post by: Wittsend on October 18, 2013, 10:45:10 AM
Well, a Mustang II person will debate that they and Pinto's are the same.  Regardless, there are many direct swap parts and others that work with little adaptation.  In the case of your '73 there are less parts that cross over.  '71-'73 Pinto's are their own animal.  And, FYI the '73 has a "one year only" steering rack.

Common parts that swap are:
8" rear end
Wheels
2.3 - V6 engine/parts
Transmissions (2.3 - V6)

Various interior parts (may require some modification):
Seats
Center console

Others will likely know more. I'm just going of the top of my sleepy morning head.

First off let me tell you your white Pinto looks awesome. I've been eye balling that white wagon also!

Dave has a center console in his Pinto that looks awesome in there! I need to find one in tan honestly. I had a Mustang II I bought new in 1974 after selling my 1970 Boss 302 (don't laugh at me, there was a gas shortage).

Thanks!

I gotta tell you, each time I think I'm close to paint, I need more work to make it as perfect as I can get it. So far I think I have the front fender done. Weather looks good so I did some work today. I ordered lacquer primer and it didn't come last week, I couldn't wait so sanded the heck out of Milo. I'll prime it when it gets in. I think I'm closer now LOL - said that before. Hoping to paint within the next month or so. I'm getting the Maverick back soon, I hope, and I'll have to sand the stuffins out of that one.

Here it is so far, getting those ridges out of the paint where you grind is a pain!

Honestly, I didn't have the talent, only the patience and YouTube. I'm pretty certain the fender is perfect and the rest that I got. When I get the primer I'll do it and we'll see when it's still wet. That shows everything in a bright light. Honestly, YouTube is teaching me!

I am so impatient on wanting to paint it, but I want it so perfect that it looks better than when it came from the factory if that's at all possible. I need to do the interior, said I wasn't going to, but I have to do the doors at the very least. Since Dave said something when we were looking at them, I have to have that perfect also - sheesh. That's next years project. I have to get the Ramble and Maverick done also.

I don't know much about heaters, but I got a 35,000 BTU propane one I'm hoping lets me work through the winter on the cars...

Oh trust me you've got the talent, I've tried several times at body work and glasswork and had tons of instruction and teaching and I can tell you how to do it all, but when it comes down to doing it not gonna happen it turns out worse than before I started, LOL..

Well, the proof will be when the paint goes on honestly. I've got to setup a paint booth thing in my garage yet. I read and watched some videos using blanket sheets (from Goodwill or Idaho Youth Ranch or the DI). First cleaning the floor real good after cleaning and blowing out the garage then spraying the walls some so any dust clings to the sheets. Any dust will show up pretty badly I think. I will have to try it and see. So we'll see how it turns out after I spray I guess, frigging me out, but they want a LOT to just spray the car. I'm going to buy a single stage paint from Limco or something like that.

So I dunno, patience is the big thing I guess...

If it works, everyone from work wants their cars done, LOL Told them they would have to sand and prep it like I am and I don't think they want to try it honestly... But I also have 2 others after this one :(

Thanks for the vote of confidence :)

dave1987 the eyelid bots to the top, and the lower end is the threaded rod! I don't have that upper mount on either of my wagons a 73 pinto and a 78 bobcat! so I have to figure they are correct plus when you look up a rear shock for a 78 bobcat at napa shows the eyelid shock! just my 2 cents take care

bbobcat75

its a ford product in early 90s ford had 3 different serp. belt set ups in the f150 with 3 different belts sizes and all would have same options figure that one out!! so these rear shocks are no real BIG surprise to me!! lol
take care!

I finished high school in 1973. I modelled legs instead of doing bodywork back then and ran brackets. My dad and brother built the cars and I ran the cars.

By doing it quickly and folding the bondo so it mixes well. I use the Evercoat for the mud and putty. Works much better than Bondo and you can get it at a body supply shop. At 4:07 he shows how to mix with no bubbles. This is how I am learning to do it. That fender that you didn't see, took me around 10 times. Hammering the creases each time actually to get rid of them. There are a LOT of videos that show this and putty also. YouTube has it if you want to learn it!

Yeah, it's all based on the time you put into the prep work and the final paint of course with zero to very little dust (that will be the big thing for me)...

OK, for those with pealing rain gutters I found the fix and seems to work good. The pictures don't show the rain gutters pealing and all rusted underneath, but think I posted one that was like that already. These rain gutters are pretty cool actually and the gutters were actually plastic I guess. So I took a dremel and small wire brush and ground them down to metal and no rust and the popped up gutter plastic to the edge. I used the brush and not a wheel for this, the wire wheel didn't seem to do the trick.

Got it to the point of being satisfied that I cured the rust and got the plastic wheeled out to the edge and then with my finger got some putty and filled it in. It worked pretty good. Sanded it with some good 3M 80 grit (the purple stuff) and then wet sanded some and this is the result of that.

The primer still needs to be wet sanded. At this time I pretty much have it done except one dent and waiting on a dent puller I ordered to come in. I think I'm ready for the final wet sanding and actually just have the dent (the other needs to be sanded yet).

So just some wet sanding and I'm pooped. I also am lending a saddle to a friend and it was in my storage shed, so had to treat that too - whew! But all the little chips are gone with the rust under it!

Honestly, I didn't know if this was going to work. I'll put them where I placed the others. I just want it as perfect as possible. Lot of states are different but AZ goes by a percentage of transparency on the doors and windshield, behind that don't matter, and cops carry a meter with them they'll pull you over if they think you're too dark and check it and they'll give you a ticket if it's too dark... Mine is tinted all the way around the back.

As you think you're closer to paint? You're not. I keep finding more wrong before paint. Maybe I am getting OCD on this, but I do want it perfect as possible. So the trouble with just doing a small dent takes awhile. The car is now at least 70% primer. This was a car that I originally thought would be some minor bodywork and a paint job. Oh well, the devil is in the details as they say.

You know how I am with the car ;) LOL  I ordered the paint, it doesn't ship for 5 more days. I'm not certain how I can fit it yet. The console in the car now actually comes real close to the shifter. I'm not certain if I can keep the original tray though and may have to cut that out to fit the console. Right now it's above my pay grade so might have someone do it. Found someone to do the seats and he said he can think of something on the console. If I could fit a 78 one in there, it would work. Thinking it through! Then I'm done until Spring after paint to work underneath. Gotta do the Maverick and get it in primer at least.

I just had the back window redone with outthe defroster, it looks good without the lines :-D

Hey no one bought those Pintos yet, just called the guy.

You'll like the detail work. Someone today said it's like 95% of the paintjob, they aren't kidding!
Title: Re: Thought I'd put my 73 wagon here
Post by: popbumper on November 13, 2013, 06:37:32 PM
This is really good stuff Dianne. As you have seen on my restoration (and you know from experience), bodywork is an absolute OCD fest, and it a tedious, tedious time killer. You will think you have something super flat until you throw some nice shiny paint on it. Then, the light catches it a certain way, and OOPS - there are tiny dents you missed in places you'd never guess. I am putting the first coat on the car after all the bodywork JUST to act as the guide for bodywork. I have found a number of missed spots, this paint will be sanded back down with 600 grit, any defects will be repaired with spot putty and a rust oxide primer (the car is brown), and then will be final painted.
Keep up the GREAT work, it's all worth the effort. I can't wait to get mine done too!!
Chris

Hey pop! Mine is also brown, although you can't tell now with all the primer LOL Would the red oxide in Lacquer be better than doing it with the gray lacquer primer I'm using? I guess the red would match the top coat. I plan on doing a single stage enamel urethane on it, and not the two stage.

The Maverick will be two stage because I bought the paint already and the King in pearl white, and thinking lacquer there also.

So back to the Pinto, are you saying that using the red oxide would be better than the grey?

Thanks!
Title: Re: Thought I'd put my 73 wagon here
Post by: popbumper on November 13, 2013, 07:12:52 PM
Well, I want to use the red oxide because it's closer in color to the final coat (easier to cover/hide). When I did the first bodywork I used standard grey. As far as final coat, I chose to use original enamel - I realize that urethanes are superior but I am trying to save some $$ - and it won't be a daily driver - and I am using a urethane hardener in it anyway, so it should be reasonably durable.

Guess that makes sense! Check out Limco paint, I think you might be surprised at the results and the cost. Single stage may only cost you around $160.00 with everything including the harder. The Maverick, got a deal, will have Deltron paint - but only because I got a deal from someone who decided to go with a different color - that stuff is expensive!

So, guess I'll get some red oxide and then resand LOL

I will, thanks for the tip. The Deltron has been real decent for me, but I need to spray in a dust free booth (or find someone to do it cheap). I can paint all day, love doing it, but I don't have the proper facilities.

Deltron is very expensive though and Limco is pretty good from the cars I've seen painted with it, and years later - not like Macco paint.

You can setup a booth like this:

1) Get old sheets at a Goodwill or other thrift store.
2) Clean the heck out of the area you're painting
3) Pin them up in your garage or work space to create the booth
4) Spray water on the floor, ceiling and the walls you made with the sheets

It works pretty darn good. If you do get dust, just sand it down later (enamel in about 6 months) and polish :)

I've heard that about makeshift booths - and I'm considering it - but I used to work in a woodshop that had a full size auto updraft paint booth where we painted cabinets. I have asked the owner if I could use it when the time comes....and he has agreed.....so hopefully that will still work out.....

Well, that would also work if you don't have that alternative :)

I'm real close. We had a warm Saturday last week and I took down a lot of the hood that I didn't before. Rust again under those little nicks. I think I'm almost there now, one small thing and the rain gutters (boy am I dreading that! Mask of course cause all the plastic. Hopefully I won't be doing this again LOL

The wheels all painted black. I like the contrast of the rings and hubs on it. Oh, also had to add some anodized aluminum gold granades to the valve stems on the wheels LOL

I had shell casings on my other cars - just cut down some and epoxied them in. Those kept disappearing, these probably will also...

I'm not certain, but I may let it sit until Spring with a ride once in awhile. I have my Maverick back next week and that needs more than the Pinto did and I do want to get started on the King Cobra II - sheesh I must be nuts! LOL

But it's cold now, and getting colder. We're see, I need to paint some on a BMW I have for winter and I don't care that much about it, so I may do some paint on it and see how it does in the cold curing. I have a propane heater, but I really want good conditions and I can go over it some more before painting :D

Thanks, it's getting close :D

Dianne,

Make sure that your paint booth , garage is well ventilated using a propane heater. Paint fumes can ignite if the LEL is too high. Just saying.

But that not coming for awhile? Maybe a year out or more, have the Mustang, Spitfire, Galaxie and Pinto. :(  How bad will it get messed up doing it? Won't it be better to patch up the paint later?
Title: Re: Thought I'd put my 73 wagon here

Always best to do all the mechanical work first.
You'll be changing the complete drive line, from in front of the rad support all the way back to the diff / rear springs.
Also the interior will have to be pulled (front) for the fire wall mods.
Carpet, insulation, seats, heater etc for the welding.

If you leave the fenders on during this process, you'll want good protection on them ..... best is to remove them, to protect them from scratches & small dents.

Engine & trans likely be in / out at least a dozen times, test fitting all to make sure.
Then the engine bay detail / paint work etc. when all fits good.

Post by: Reeves1 on July 07, 2014, 07:55:39 AM
Mild build & you'll not need sub frames installed.

If I were to do a mild build , I'd try to find a newer Ranger wrecked. Use the full drive line with the 4 LT engine - with mods / re-built with a little more go fast parts.
Likely no fire wall mods needed.
Newer Rangers (at least the ones the wife had/has) have a 4:88 diff gearing. That's why they are so snappy. OD in the trans makes HWY driving good.

I think it would be an easier swap than a V-8 as well.

I may stay with what I have for now, don't know what I'll do later, but that does look like a pretty good alternative :D

Thanks! I priced them and they aren't that much for a whole drivetrain depending on the year!! :D

07 for sale near me is $750.00. Whole truck. Roll over.
Would be the same (ish) for even the last year built : 2011.

Wife's 07 roll over went for $375.00 at auction. Insurance co. lied to me saying I'd be able to bid on it, so it "got away" (not happy about that & still kicking them for it).

Since I'm back to the living, well somewhat LOL. I am trading a rebuild on an engine for a paint job. This will be much better than I can do, and it will be perfect actually since he does high-end restorations. Doing the interior, jams, even taking the jams out and all glass. This will be a perfect paint I hope :) I'm pretty excited since I've seen the cars he's done at shows.

So the YELLOW, yes YELLOW, Pinto is being done. I'm even putting on the air dam.

I have used the Limco paint also , its good paint, the company has different lines of paint , BASF, when you think you are going to keep some thing forever use the top of the line and the best you can get , when I painted my airplane I used the best they had , GLASURIT , by the same company , done this about 15 years ago and still looks great , I know a few others after five years they are faded and chipping , the yellow will look nice with a few stripes , will see ya from a mile away ,

That's awesome, I should do that with this one. But it's here and documented :D You should have scanned and posted them on Misfits. Hopefully that will be here soon!

Had those hub caps before, and with the trim rings, one more trick is to find some old farmont wheels (14") and the hub cap will fit them too, and find some 14" trim rings also, the tires for 14" are easier to find , just a little taller makes the car ride better, and might check the car you are takeing the 2.3 out of, some had the same wheels as the farmont (fox body) , so just some info for you to have , 😄 later Blaine

He used the car this came out of and put a 5.0 in his 87. He had a donor car. You're saying that Mustang wheels fit these? I have a set on my Mustang I'm replacing with lacy wheels, the ones that were original. Do I have to swap anything?

Here it is again. Almost, well almost, getting ready for it's yellow paint. I may have to change the name from Milo to Bumble Bee :D

Interior is being painted also in yellow.

I think I want comfy seats, but they have to be black, I was going to do the originals in yellow and black. But I'm thinking more padded seats. I guess I can have more padding put in these. But I guess my car won't be stock much longer with the EFI engine (one of my guys thinks he could pick up a turbo real cheap for it). I don't know if I need the turbo, we'll see :)

Bumble Bee, I like the name :D I call the King Cobra Spike LOL

If you do the windshield has to come out for it to be done nice, change the seal then, they are known to leak there and rust the floor out,

It was pretty straight when he got it, but there was bodywork that I did on it. I think the pictures are posted here. He should have it out :) Guess he hasn't done it yet. The headliner is being replaced. I want one made to be honest, probably Yellow and Black. I'm still thinking of black stripes on the hood, I think they would look good - but I want the rack on top, so may not do good. I can always add them later, but the air dam will make a difference also I think. I know a lot of people don't like yellow, but honestly, I do :D

This car is great, no leaks and no rust on the pans :) Dave saved it and kept it well!

I honestly like this better than the King Cobra :D

LOL no flames ahahahahaha But what do you think about the black stripes from the air dam up to the roof line and somehow fade out where the rack is. Kind of like the duality of the car and the utilitarian nature of the roof rack so I can take it on a trip with modern air and a decent ride and at the same time bring it to a show and show it off. (LOL I'm Pintosphering now LOL) I mean this is the coolest of all cars made. I mean look at the lines on the wagon, the pencil bumpers and I'm not trying to brag about my car much, but I love it!

Honestly, I look at a 396 SS Chevelle, but the Pinto is cooler. I have a rare Mustang King Cobra, I like this better, to me it's cooler. These were people's cars and not hot rods, but lots did hotrod them, but someday, trust me, people will want one as bad as you or I. What's cool is that it's ours and we have one or more. Vegas, you know how I'm holding in my puke LOL

I didn't mean like I am facing you. I mean I loved watching all the projects. I loved doing mine. It was close to paint and he only had to take stuff off. It's going to be in my garage most the time since I have to buy all the trimming. So it will be little by little. Having to do the seats will be expensive. So trust me it's not like a fast project.

These are some more pictures of the paint job being done. He's gotten it all torn down. My only problem now is that he cut out all the rubber. Is there anyway to get the rear window rubber?

Hope he took out the side windows without cutting them also, I know you still can get the windshield seal, I seen a few of the rear lift gate seals on e-bay once in while,  I found the last engine mount today, the only thing left is one front spring and the oil pump pick up, will look more tomorrow, hope the weather holds out, also I will look on my spare lift gate to see if the seal is soft enough to remove without breaking it in case you can not find a seal,   Blaine

This is the car now. The original guy was going to do it, but he was an idiot. His work looked good and was about the same as a shop. But he wasn't primering it and there fish eyes all over the place. He wanted to prime it, which I thought he was going to. It was a nightmare. I was having a great Saturday driving out to Middleton with my best friend and this idiot calls me and tells me there is fisheye all over and said he solvent washed it and everything. He was more than a body shop when done so I was pissed and said no thank you. I think he was trying to bill me more than he should to get more of a trade. This is now at the Shave Shoppe here in Nampa. We're doing his alignments now also for his shop after he does tires after Friday when the guys are trained on the AccuTurn.

But the other guy put foil on it. I thought Ken was kidding. Ken is going (from the Shave Shoppe) to tape it off and remove the aluminium foil from the car. It's getting a yellow primer, then block sanded, then tapped and sprayed. I'm doing the engine bay in black, just in case I beat the crap out of it when the engine is replaced with the 2.3 EFI. He bakes it for an hour and then sprays the single stage with a clear and then bakes it again.

He's really good!

THIS CAR IS GONNA POP!!!!

The car is getting closer now!

Will be painted today :) In the paint booth. I can't wait until I see how this one pops when it's done! It's gonna be the brightest yellow!!!

I can't wait to get the engine in there. I will have the guys take pictures of each weld and everything being done here. I'll put it in the 2.3 EFI engine swap also. That should help anyone else and pinto_one should also be able to help!

Spoke to Dave on Facebook! He's making a custom ashtray for his Pinto now!

On a more serious note though, why yellow? No problems with yellow, it looks really nice, I just find that sometimes people have some interesting story or reason for their color choice.

I just think these cars look bad a$$ with yellow. The way with yellow. The way with being done this is being being done this thing will really pop. Blacked out windows in the back it will just look really cool I think. There's no special reason for the yellow other than I like it ;D

This is the Pinto primed. I guess he does things in stages. I would have just primed it and shot it, so I learned something new. He has a big paint booth, but he does a color change differently. I love the paint job so far and this is it in yellow primer. Pretty cool, you can get paint in different colors!

This is the Pinto painted with a first coat with single stage. What he does is paint a first coat only on the car with single stage. When he gets to the second coat, he mixes a 50/50 paint along clear to make it pop more. Pretty cool actually!

Gonna do this myself now if I paint myself!

 The Alignment Waltz
 The dance you can't escape..
Lest your tires the road will rape
It's all in the settings , that make the car go,
Camber, caster, and of course, that Big Toe
You'll get to know them, as they tweak the all the fittings
Your butt will get tired , and the time sneaks by with the sittings
When all is set, you'll strut about with glee,
Cause a car dog tracking, could cause you to pee!

It's been a long time getting my Pinto back from a friends paint shop, but it's finally back. I'll be doing some block sanding on drips on the car now. But it still looks good :)

I need clips, does anyone know where you can buy these so I can get the molding back on the wagon?

Anyone know what transmission with overdrive will bolt on to the 2.0?

The wagon is looking great , on the over drive will have to check and see what they used overseas on the 2.0'. They ran that same engine up past the 90s and know if they stuck the A4LD behind the 2.0 all you would need is the flywheel and bel housing , then find a early 85 bronco II with the A4LD and use that one , no computer needed ,  go to transmission center website and look up the write up on that trans ,  also you can ask Dutchwagon72 on this site , he has a 72 pinto wagon overseas and can look for you , he just got finished with a 2.0 fuel injection insatall , later Blaine

I was hoping for something simple LOL This isn't a daily drive though so it's kind of OK without it.

Thanks Blaine!

Not yet. Injured my back bad so driving another car for now. I also have to put in the dyna mat and find clips for the molding. Know where to buy those?

Go to your local body shop supply, bring you trim with you they should have a display with a tom of different clips you can match up ones that will work, I have done this countless time and it has never failed me yet.

Dianne, the yellow wagon is looking better and better!
As for Blaine's suggestion for the auto 2.0, A4LD was indeed mated to later Pinto 2.0's in Europe.
See image for example. Lot's of these lying around because people are discarding them all the time, they only keep the engines. Should be possible to find a flywheel and bellhousing if you want me too look for them.

Thanks for the compliment Dutch! What flywheel did you use and converter? Is it something I can find in the states? On the highway this one isn't too good and wines a lot. The 79 is going to be my daily driver and the 73 wagon and King Cobra are for fun :)

Let me know what those came out of there!

Thank you so much!!!

Sorry, but I have to explain; the unit in the picture isn't mine, I've got a T9 5-speed behind a 2.0 EFI.
I posted the picture to show that we do have A4LD's mated to Pinto 2.0 engines in Europe (in Ford Sierra's and Scorpio's). I don't know what flywheel, converter and bellhousing they use, but I could keep an eye open for them.
I don't think you will find these parts in the States.

I'll probably keep this one this way for now. Maybe one day I'll do a turbo swap in it :)

Thanks!

Thanks Dutchwagon for looking this up for us , cheep way for us here would just have a wrecking yard there remove the belhousing from the transmission and stuff the torque converter and flywheel Into the belhousing and box it up and just ship that , plenty of A4LD trans here to both it too,  I am so glad I put one in mine to rid of the high speed BUZZ on the open road , bet that T-9 make it very quite on the hwy , thanks again to our overseas Pinto Buddy ,

Do you know what flywheel/flex plate and bell housing we need?

Well the stock A4LD transmission is the same for the 2.3 except for the dowel pin size on the engine , and that is easy to be made , so really the only thing you need is a flywheel , ask Duchwagon if he can hunt one down for you , they came in the sierras and Scorpios over there with the 2.0s , then its a bolt in , or check E-Bay England or UK
Or burton power, I brought a few things for my 2.8 V-6 from them, send a e-mail and ask, or just collect everything and do it at a later time ,

Yeah, the 79 going to EFI needs another $600 in parts. Custom oil cooler lines and so on. Just never ends LOL

Yeah it's like triage. I have to decide what gets money first. Want the Blazer done first then finish the 79 glass back and 73 wagon. The King Cobra just gets pushed out more and more. I have to thin the herd, don't want to lose anything though :(

just an option for the earlier plan of sticking a A4LD behind the Pinto 2.0.
I did manage to find a flexplate, (very rusty) torque converter and bellhousing, they were offered to me by Mark, a member of sierrascorpioc lub.nl after me posting a request. He wants about $ 45.-- for it, but the pain comes when you add shipping cost, it will get nearer to $ 200,--, if the weight exceeds 44 lbs even more...
So if you really need these exotic parts, it can be arranged, if not, everybody just admire the images!

Thought I would post on here for those of you that knew Dianne. I am the one that acquired her yellow 73 wagon and I absolutely love it. I drive it almost daily. Working on trying to find some side mirrors, seat belts and lots of random interior parts. I plan on keeping it "stock" and just wanted to let you all know I was continuing where she left off. I didn't know her but come to find out we do have some common friends and it sounds like she was a wonderful person. I hope she is smiling down on me as I attempt to put the interior back in this beautiful car!

Looks great, almost new , make sure you get some fender covers so if you have to work on the engine you don't scratch the new paint 😎
