Title: The Restoration Of my 1977 V-6 Pinto Crusing Wagon
Post by: DBSS1234 on May 07, 2013, 02:48:33 PM
After sitting for far too many years I am finally going to start the restoration of my crusing wagon! I ordered this car new in the late fall of 1976 and it was delivered in the early spring of 1977. My plan is to do a ground up rotisserie restoration on the Pinto to as new factory stock condition and retrace the honeymoon trip my wife and I took in 1978 up the north shore of Lake Superior and across northern Minnesota. Over the next several months (hopefully not years) I plan on sharing the process via this web site. For my first post I am sharing some proof that quality was NOT always job 1 at Ford in the late 70's. Notice how the stripes end short of the front door edge and are not centered on the bubble window, and the door speaker holes look to be cut out with a dull hachet! I also included a picture of the original window sticker.

The doors speakers on my dad's 79 wagon were cut out the same way.  Post some more pictures of your CW please.

You do know that the Cruising Wagon Package was not installed by the factory but installed as a dealer option ?....That's why there is no information on how to install the panels in the factory Body and Chassis book. From 1977 on wards.

I've never heard that before, find it really hard to believe...

cruising wagons included...

sport mirrors
front spoiler
bigger sway bar in front
front disk brake coolers
special gauge package (would have required new wiring harness)
then the dealer would have had to remove the windows to install the cruising panels...
then the sticker package

that is an awful lot of work to expect a dealer to do IMHO

I disagree with this also, I was there when my Crusing Wagon came in on the transport. All striped and ready to go. All I had the dealer do was dealer prep and under coat (wish now I had not done the under coat as I now have a lot of little holes to fill)

My guess is a 3rd party did the conversions kinda like Shelby doing the Mustangs.

Also the entire metal part of the dash board was different - the center heat/air register was moved to the right due to the gauge panel. The instrument cluster is different due to the use of the tach. And there are 6 (3 per side) metal tabs spot welded to the quarter glass pinch weld to retain the inner trim panel(s).

Look what I found hiding under the carpet last night! Not sure what all the codes mean but the vin number matches so it is the build sheet for my car! The hole is from the seat belt mounting bolt driven right thru the paper.

I have my original build sheet also. I believe it found it under the passenger seat.I cant really remember that was 34 years ago! The Cruising wagons were built at the factory. At Carlisle in 2011 , I talked to a guy that worked in the New Jersey plant. He sad that the cars that needed special attention were puller off the line and put on a "dead line". There pannels and decals were added for the Cruising Wagons and wood grain for the Squires.

I am going to redo the original multi-color stripes as per factory but in paint instead of decals (cheaper and if done correctly more durable and you will not be able to tell the differance). To duplicate the pattern I am using the following process. As the pics show I locate a large piece of paper on the panel and do a "rubbing" of the stripes. After I paint the new panel silver, I will transfer to pattern onto the panel using a pounce wheel and a pounce bag. When I get to this point I will be sure to post the process.

The disassembly is going along very well on the cruising wagon. You guys in Californis and the desert south west may not be impressed by these pictures but us midwestern guys are, look NO rust.

Been working almost every night to get all the messy undercoating off. Propane torch, putty knife, flat blade screw driver to scrape it off and then a paint brush, solvent, and several old rags to mop it off. Did find an interesting paint detail under the undercoating. It looks like the black was painted first and then masked off with plain old masking tape and paper before the silver was applied (see pics).

I thought the under coating scraping was a dirty job, I forgot just how bad the sandblasting part of the job is! Lets just say even with an air supplied sandblasting hood, the damn sand gets every where! The first pics are of the engine compartment sandblasted and with a light coat of epoxy primer to prevent flash rusting. The last ones are of the bottom sandblasted but not yet primed (ran short of primer).

If you have not done the rest yet might I suggest getting a gallon of por15 for the undercarriage. it's a cynoacrylate based product that is almost unchippable. It's essentially black spray on crazy glue. won't fall off if it gets brake fluid on it, will go on over your epoxy too.   Best stuff ever. Wear a mask!!!  Looks awesome so far though. Did the same process on mine 'cept I went straight to blast. after 3 days of waving around a blast nozzle Was gonna go down to city hall n change my name to Sandin. middle name every, last name McCracken .

Ditto on POR-15 under there. I got a gallon of Rust Bullitt cheap so I used it a couple times & I'm not impressed with it. Go with the POR brand.

DO NOT store your Pinto long term with the battery installed, here is what happens. After some quality time with a wire feed welder and a little body work it is as good as new, even the pitting is fixed. As for the battery tray I got lucky and found an NOS part.

The cost of refinishing stock hardware can be very expensive so I decided to refinish my own at home. The following pictures show the refinishing of some phosphate and oiled parts. In this case they are the rack and pinion mounting bolts.

(http://i1080.photobucket.com/albums/j333/dbss1234/106_1519.jpg) (http://s1080.photobucket.com/user/dbss1234/media/106_1519.jpg.html)
This is the refinishing set up, Phosphoric acid solution, water bath, denatured alcohol bath, and the oil bath.

(http://i1080.photobucket.com/albums/j333/dbss1234/106_1521.jpg) (http://s1080.photobucket.com/user/dbss1234/media/106_1521.jpg.html)
The bolts as removed from the car before cleaning.

The bolts after sand blasting and wire wheel brushing.

One of the bolts in the phosphoric acid solution.

Refinished bolts, nuts, and washers after the oil bath.

If anyone is interested in the process you can PM and I will forward you a link to explain the process in detail.

Somebody once told me don't restore a car you restore the parts and reassemble the car. With that in mind I tried something new in the restoration game. Zinc plating my old fasteners at home. Below are pictures of the restoration of the starter cable assembly and explainations of them. If anybody wants to now how, PM me and I will forward you a link that explains the process in detail.

Computer power supply should work. Just remember you need about 140 mA per square inch of surface area on the part you are plating. Here is a link to the site I am using as a guide.

My wife said 'Don't burn the house down, and don't make it look like a meth lab.'

DON'T CROSS THE WRONG WIRES! Also, capacitors gonna burn you. Don't touch those, either. :) lol

Beyond that, it's a bunch of wires hooked to metallic objects simmering in a salt-solution on the kitchen table. How could it not look like a meth lab??? lol

Been working every night on the restoration and I am making pretty fair progress. Engine bay is painted. On disassambly I noticed that the motor mount brackets, battery tray, hood hinges, and hood bumpers were installed before paint......... .......so that is what I did also. I also included a picture of the replated hood latch along with the replated zinc dichromate (zinc and yellow) bolts.

Continuing with the restore the parts and reassemble the car approach here are some of the restored parts (front sway bar and front lower "A" frame struts). The three yellow stripes were faint but visable on the sway bar so I repainted them after refinishing the bar. Looking at the build sheet I found in the car it shows "Y" for the sway bar (Yellow). It would have sucked to be color blind and work on the assembly line at Ford! :)

I am finally getting to bolt some parts back onto the car! This is the restored front suspension. All replaced parts are NOS except for the LH upper "A" frame which has an after market ball joint (you can tell by the bolts holding it on instead of the stock rivets). I just couldn't find a nice NOS one. :(

Dang, that looks better than new!

That's pretty awesome actually! I don't know if I can do that, but I would like to try with the Mustang. Are you getting new springs?

Front springs are original, sandblasted and refinished. The rear springs are new, one of the old ones had the top leaf completely broken in two. I hung the rear springs up to paint tonight, I should have them painted and installed by the end of the weekend.

When you're finished, how close to new do you think the ride will feel? I have some squeaks in the wagon, is taking it apart like you are the only way to fix it, or can you clean, scrape, replace any bad gaskets, bolts that are rusted, and so on. Paint also I guess if you want it to look decent. Is what you're doing the only way to get a new ride feel again?

I hope this isn't a stupid question, but how did you deal with the pitting on some of those parts?  When I restored my suspension, I did not have a compressor, so I had to pay to have them blasted.  They looked great, except all the parts looked like they had a texture to them.  Yours look, as dianne said, brand new...here's a pic of my pitted parts:

Sanding with 80 grit and spending some time with it might do it. Or an orbital sander with 40 grit and smooth with 80 with a vibrating sander and then 200. That would provide that new look I think. Yours look good. Mine are minor surface rust only, so a light sanding and paint would do most of it. I don't know if that would only be cosmetic or show or if it makes for a new ride drive. I'd be happy with a perfect ride. I'd like to know how the new springs did. I compensated with air shocks and it didn't make a difference.

His is too perfect LOL, actually looks fake it's so good!

The only way to get the surface pitting perfect is to fill the pits with filler, sand, fill, sand, prime, sand, prime, sand and paint. I was going to wait and show the rear axle from start to finish but since you asked here it is in process. As for the ride, new ball joints, bushings, and rubber isolators should make it ride as new. Remember this isn't a Lincoln, so the ride will never be like new cars.

Rear axle housing is installed along with a pair of NOS Motorcraft shocks. Tomorrow I will install the axles and the rear brake components. I painted the brake backing plates today and they need over night to dry. The red you see on the carrier is Ditzler DP-74 epoxy primer used to duplicate the red oxide the factory used. On removable carrier axles Ford dipped the castings in red oxide primer before machining them. That is why you see the bright "silver" spots on the casting, this is where the casting was machined so there would be bare metal in this area. I painted these areas with a natural metal paint to duplicate this look but the paint won't rust. The ID tag I plated with zinc to avoid rust. The pinion nut and the carrier retaining nut are replated with a zinc dichromate finish.

thanks but already got the engine done , done a few mods , took the 2.9 crank out of my wifes dead bronco II , machined the nose to take the gear (never liked chains) and installed it with a comp two cam, headers and TBI fuel injection ( see ranger site for the 2.8 conversion ) and a remote oil filter ( got tired of oil running down my arm every time I pulled the filter ) and last a A4LD automatic overdrive , get rid of the buzz at hwy speeds, but yours will look like a factory new car, nice

Engine bay is ready for the completed engine/transmission assembly. Hope to get the transmission back from the shop next week (had a little problem with the reassembly and called in the reinforcements). If anyone needs some of the wire loom covering I have plenty and will sell you enough to redo your car cheap. I had to buy the stuff in 100' rolls so I have alot left over. I have 3/4" ID, 1/2" ID and 1/4" ID but no extra clips or connectors as I reused my old ones. Let me know if interested.

I believe it was just the medthod they used with a V-6 in 1977. There isn't mush room with a V-6 and power steering in that area.

Moving from front to back, the dash is in! For those of you with a black interior a perfect match for the factory semi flat black is SEM 39144 trim paint, it also comes in spray cans for those without a gun and an air compressor. The first picture is before the dash was installed and the second is after......... duh! ;)

Thanks for the kind complements. As for the bag vs bottle thing, I have owned this car since new and it came with the bag. I actually ordered it late in 1976 and it was built in March of 1977. Maybe it was an early build thing that got changed over later, or maybe they just ran out of bottles and used this to keep the line going? All I know is replacement bags are nonexistent but luckily mine is in good shape! If anybody out there has a good bag I would be interested in buying a spare!

Every time you post new photos I got to say wow, this is beyond Restoration . hope you got the dealer sticker to put on the window because its going to look better than new,  but also notice that you car does not have A/C , and been trying to find out the water pump pulley diameter , have two almost tore apart pintos and got the pulleys mixed up, one is smaller than the other , one pinto did not come with a/c and the one I am almost finished with does, also been thinking of making a two grove pulley because the belt broke and ran hot and cracked both heads , this set up always ate belts , also yours does not have the big alt , both of mine do, along with the big 5 blade flex fan from the factory , so if you have time can you let me know what diameter you have , thanks Blaine   (in hot butt Missisippi

I had a rubber stamp made to redo the part number stamp on the air cleaner snorkle. If any one restoring a 1977 V-6 Pinto out there would like to have the correct stamped number on the snorkle let me know. 1978 Pintos may be the same but I don't know for sure.

FINALLY got my brake booster back from the rebuilders so the engine compartment is done! I thought new cars have crowded engine compartments, this thing is busy under the hood and it doesn't even have A/C! Also my wife and I installed the windshield with a new gasket. The project is really starting to look like a car again.

Anyone following this restoration thread knows I am kind of a stickler for originality in my restorations. Along this line, I have never liked the look of modern sealed battries in old cars. It just doesn't look right.
To fix this problem I made a cover for the modern battery. First I got lucky and found an old Motorcraft vented type battery and cut the top off of it, enlarged the post holes, and repainted it with plastic paint. Then I went shopping for a battery that had the right dimensions and post spacing. That was the hard part but my local O'Reilly had one that worked. Here are pictures of my new battery with an old battery cover.

(http://i1080.photobucket.com/albums/j333/dbss1234/battery1.jpg) (http://s1080.photobucket.com/user/dbss1234/media/battery1.jpg.html)
The modern battery installed, it just doesn't look at home in there does it?

(http://i1080.photobucket.com/albums/j333/dbss1234/battery2.jpg) (http://s1080.photobucket.com/user/dbss1234/media/battery2.jpg.html)
Much better. The only give away is the height of the posts in the cable clamps! ;D

Another example of how quality was NOT job 1 at Ford in 1977. I was cleaning the inside of the doors after sandblasting and found these slugs in the doors. They evidently were left in the door after the hole for the stereo speaker wires were drilled. Not wonder my car had rattles I couldn't find! :P

Latest update on the progress of the restoration. Inside of the doors and the jamb area of the doors have been painted along with the inner workings (door latches and window regulators) getting cleaned, lubed and reinstalled (I even decided to use the correct rivets to reinstall the window regulator). I know I must be excessive compulsive!  :P
The seats and interior door panels cleaned up VERY nicely and look almost new!
Lastly I got the door frame tire size and air pressure decal reproduced. These should be correct for all Pintos 1975 thru 1978. If anyone needs one I had extra made and will let them go for $7.00 each including the postage.

Color could be changed on the pink one but the part number on the bottom starts with D7 with decodes to 1977. The door jamb decal should be the same unless I am mistaken.

Finished installing a new interior for a customer in a Ford Model A 5 window so I am back onto my Pinto. Finished cleaning and polishing the wheel tire assemblies. I also installed a NOS set of center caps for that final touch! Before everybody asks where I found raised white letter 13" tires let me say they are old (second set ever on bought for this car) I figure I bought them about 1982 or so, still have about 80% tread! These are going to be my "show" tires for limited trips locally only. I also have another set of slotted wheels (though not as nice as these) that I plan on mounting new black wall tires on for longer trips.

Fuel tank is cleaned, detailed, and installed with new filller neck seal and a NOS fuel pick-up/level sender. Tank was very nice on the inside so all I did was tape off the openings, lightly sand blast, epoxy prime, and paint it with Eastwood tank-tone silver. I could see the remains of the USS stamp on the tank so I replicated it for that finishing touch. :D

Super fine details on your restoration !
Better than new !

Q: the un-painted parts under the dash etc. Are you blasting/painting them ? I've been doing so with mine. Not worried about what was factory though. Just wanted no rust.

If I was doing one like you , I'd clear coat to preserve the bare metal look.

Unpainted parts are either blasted and clear coated or painted with a natural metal type of paint. I use a lot of Eastwood spray grey and detail grey. I buy it in the quart cans if available and use a touchup gun to spray it.

Finished painting the inside edges of the fenders and under the hood. Then I spent a little over 4 hours last night getting the doors, fenders and hood installed and the gaps as close to perfect as "Pintoly" possible. Ended up looking pretty darn good if I say so myself.
A little tip for anybody doing this, you will notice the thin plastic washers under the fender to body bolts. I made these from an old milk jug and use them to avoid damaging the paint when adjusting the fender into position. After everything looks good remove one bolt at a time, remove the washer, then reinstall the bolt.

IT'S ALIVE!!!!!! Fired up the motor last night for the first time since the rebuild. Last time I had heard it run was in 1992. Runs very nice but still needs a little fine tuning to be perfect. After watching all these auto restoration shows where there is always some major leak or other problem at first fire up it is nice to say "no leaks and the transmission is shifting fine". It is nice to have things go right once in awhile. :)

Final prime is done! First picture is after hand blocking the inital prime with 220 grit dry. This step gets the body perfectly straight. The other two pictures are of the car after the reprime (2K urethane primer). You can see from these pictures I masked off the entire bottom of the car with sheet plastic. This is the only way to keep my detailing from getting spoiled by all the overspray. Next step is to block sand it with 400 grit dry and lighly sand with 600 wet. Then COLOR COAT!!

HI-YO SILVER! The car is finally silver again! I painted it a urethane base coat/clear coat system (three coats color and four coats clear). The reason the paint is not shiney in the pictures is they show the paint after I have "color sanded" out all the orange peel texture with first 800 grit foloowed by 1000 grit sand paper wet. Next I will add the stripes and finish sand with 1500, 2000 and 3000 grit on a palm DA sander. Then finally I will buff it back to a nice shine.

As to how I am replacing the stripes, the third picure is a tease. More details to follow.  ;D

As promised, more details on how to repaint the original stripes on a tape striped car. The tool shown above is a pounce wheel. Think of it an itty bitty spur on a stick. Dress makers use it to transfer patterns.
First, as I showed earlier in this thread, I made rubbings of the stripes along with noteing key points to enable me to repostion the rubbings on the body panels. Then I used the pounce wheel to poke a string of small holes on the rubbing lines. Then hang the pierced rubbing back on the car. Using blue carpenters chalk and an old sock make a bag with the chalk in it. When you pat the templates with the bag some of the chalk will go thru the holes and leave the pattern on the car! Now carefully mark the lines with a pencil, if you don't do this you WILL accidently brush some of the chalk off when putting on the macking tape, usually in a very critical location. Here are pictures of the process.

Yipes! Stripes! My Pinto's got em! Some of you may remember this Beachnut chewing gum commercial, if so you get the joke. If not, google it.
Laid down the last stripe (purple) Monday and peeled off all the masking paper last night. Next step is to sand the stripes with 1000 grit, sand the entire car with 1500 and 3000 grit with a palm DA, and finally buff it all back to a blemish free high gloss! ;D
(http://i1080.photobucket.com/albums/j333/dbss1234/stripeslh.jpg) (http://s1080.photobucket.com/user/dbss1234/media/stripeslh.jpg.html)

The reason the silver is so dull is it has already been sanded with 1000 grit before the stripes were laid down.

$200 to $300 seems like a good price honestly. What do you think is a ridiculous price?

Just got an air damn for the Pinto LOL Now I need to start thinking about a power plant or doing what Scott did to his :)

No that's not bad, but $800 is as far as I'm concerned.

Make sure when you get them that ALL the filler pieces are included. There are also drip rail extensions but Tigger has a set for sale. My panels are useless since I only got the sides. I didn't know there were more pieces needed to install them.

You know, I've been thinking about putting those panels on my 73 wagon. I see the drip panels you're talking about in the back.

First off, would those fit a 1973 wagon? How are they in there, are they welded, like spot welded, or placed in there on something like a big window. There would probably have to be some welding and cutting on removing the post in the middle.

I think about it, then I think about having to do a color change so stripes would work on the car. With brown I would really be limited in color choices.

I dunno to be honest... Not certain the amount of labor and hours. I have a welder now I can call to do work. Maybe, I don't know. How many hours to install those and the drip rails in the back?

Dianne, the panels are not that hard to install, Four screws in the front and four in the back( that are covered w/ a metal strip that is almost always missing) the drip rail extension and two long tar like seals top and bottom. it's the factory inner panel that gets a little harder to install, if a person plans to use the factory panels. If you would like my picture gallery have pic's that show most of what I'm saying( may have to look around a little) Bud

I have no filler pieces or inner panels with the ones I have.  I guess my uncle didn't know those were necessary when he took them off 30 years ago.  So are my panels just useless then?

It's going to require some fabrication or weld them solid & fill the gap with metal. If you want a complete bolt on deal the pieces are necessary but if you have the skill to make what's missing it should be simple. Tigger posted pics in my thread showing the fillers.

There is a LOT more than just the panels on the outside it seems looking inside also. Not something I'll be doing for certain.

WOW, some good info here didn't know there was that much to it, haven't seen inner panels either. Wonder if you could just weld the outer panels in and make it look like the side is all one like a sedan delivery?, I'll have to think about this some.

The inner panels will be setup the same with the drip rails. Looked at pictures of them online.

If you look inside, you can see the interior panel and it has drip rails if you enlarge the picture. I don't think this is a simple solution unless you have ALL the parts...

These wagons look fine with the windows in back blacked out...

Been a VERY busy weekend. Saturday I installed the bubble windows and the rear glass then buffed the paint out. The buffing process I use is as stated before sand out to 3000 grit. First buff is with a foam cutting pad and Meguiar's M100Pro Speed Compound followed by a final buff with a foam polish pad and Meguiar's M205 Ultra Finishing Polish. Finally wash the car, have a beer and go take a nap! Sunday I started reassembly, about all I have left is front bumper, and interior install. Then it is misc. paint touchup, final checking of the mechanicals and a test drive. ;D

The chrome trim was dicussed before in this forum:
"I found a source for replacment chrome insert molding for Cruising wagon bubble windows. They are idenical ( except the back side is flat not pionted} to the ones used on 1978 Bronco windshield moldings.I matched my old one up the the new onesa friend just got. He got it from broncograveyar d.com . It is the same with and has lock edges like the Pinto's , like I said the back is flat , but I dont see why it wont work. Here is a link. http://broncograveyard.com/bronco/i-25180-windshield-reveal-molding-chrome.html (http://broncograveyard.com/bronco/i-25180-windshield-reveal-molding-chrome.html) "   As for the gaskets, I was lucky that mine were in fine shape. Up here in the rust belt metal disappears but rubber survives very nicely!

Interior is installed! Still need to paint and install the front spoiler, install a new pipe between the muffler and the cat., and do the detailing touchups. Next Wednesday it has an appointment for a front end alignment then it is as done as a hobby car ever is. Meaning it is never really done!

DB,
This has been the best restoration I've seen in detail, Thanks for showing the Perfection in effort execution. Of course,  if I had a career path that drove me nuts, My racer would be my escape as I bought every possible AN fitting to plumb it with and built a state of the art cage into it.  But instead, I'm writing Sci- Fi  automotive literary efforts and trying to save the Pinto corner of the Hobby from the EPA and CARB.  Your persistence and presentation is an inspiration to us all.

Keep it Shiny, and rolling! ;)

Just a little update. After getting a second set of wheels cleaned up and some new tires mounted I now have a "driver" set of wheels so I can let the little wagon leave city limits. I tested the quality of my mechanical restoration by taking in a show with Cookieboy in Aitkin, MN, a 378 mile round trip! It made the trip with out any problems, never had to even look at my emergency tool kit. :D

Here is a picture of the 77 and Cookie's 80 at the show.

At car shows people keep asking me how many 1977 Pinto Cruising Wagons were made so I ordered a Marti Report for my car. It breaks down as follows:

225,097 Pintos produced in 1977
  10,029 were Cruising Wagons
811 were silver with the 3 tone stripe package

Of the 225,097 Pinto produced 11.774 had the V-6 engine or 5.32% of production.

Applying the 5.23% to the 811 silver striped Cruising Wagons you get about 42 V-6 power silver striped Cruising Wagons........ ........

How many are left???? I only know of one...........
It should be a safe bet I won't have a dozen or more like me at a show.  ;)

Car show season in the great white north is pretty much over now. :'(  Here is how my Pinto done at the area shows.
It was fun listening to the comments. One I heard many times was, as people seen it was a Pinto they made some smart comment about blowing up or them being a piece of ____.  :( Then as they looked at it I heard them say This is pretty nice, I like it."  :)
Next on my list of personal cars to restore is my 1967 Mustang coupe. Same car as I had in high school in the mid 70's. It will be restored to 70's hot rod style. Big tires, jacked up, load exhaust....... ..........you get the idea!
