« on: November 16, 2016, 02:28:58 PM »
I was shocked to find a WC T5 for 75 bucks out of 88 mustang 2.3
No bell but if I can't find locally someone here might have one?  Excited as its going to friend, 1987 Dave,  in idaho.

WC T-5 tranies were never placed behind 2.3 engines or so I'm told. I'm sure someone on here will lets us know.

Actually they were World Class. Source    http://www.moderndriveline.com/Technical_Bits/t5_history.htm

In 1985, Ford was one of the first companies to adopt the World Class T-5 by installing it in both the 2.3L and 5.0L Mustang, Fairmont, T-bird, and Cougar, to name a few. The 5.0L V8 received a 3.35 first gear set with a .68od while the 2.3L received a 3.97:1 first gear with a .79:1 OD. The main reason for the 3.35:1 first gear in the 5.0L was to give the 5.0L some punch with 2.73:1 or optional 3.08:1 rear axle gears. The 1986 SVO received a one year only, 3.50 first gear ratio, as the 3.97 gear ratio was too low for the added power of the turbo charged 2.3L. No longer were 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears spinning on a solid output shaft as needle bearings were installed under each gear to reduce drag. The lower counter gears saw tapered bearings to replace the bronze thrust washer. All main shaft synchro's were fiber lined steel rings to improve rings friction surface while 5th remained bronze. Installing steel synchro rings with lining, improved two things, the rings don’t stretch and break and the added friction slowed the gear faster allowing for higher shift points. The Ford WC transmission V8 gear set remained through 1989. Torque rating remained the same at 265ft/lbs.

The common ID aspect is the bearing cup in the front of the trans. The Non-WC looks more like a freeze plug. The WC looks like it is machined.  That said, I don't know if they are interchangeabl e e. So, the ID is probably only useful with original installations - to be safe.  From what I've read the Non-WC and the WC differ only in the bearings (roller vs bronze) and the syncro's (brass vs lined). Apparently the gears themselves are similar with the exception of the aftermarket version.

The T-5 in stock form is only good for about 250-300 Ft Lb. torque.  GM never put them behind a 350 Engine which I think says a lot.  Most don't like the Mustang 3.35 1st gear. The preference is for the 2.95 1st gear in the GM trans or the aftermarket version.  For a mild HP engine that isn't thrashed at the dragstrip they are good transmissions. Tons more info on the internet for the reading. Most hate the near 4.00 1st gear in the 2.3 T5.

I wonder if there is enough spline on the input shaft to use an offset pilot bearing (extra material more towards the trans) and use the 3.35 Mustang trans with the 2.3?  One might have to turn the bearing out of bronze but it is only 1/4". A T-5 site made this comment, "The 4-cyl shaft is about a quarter inch longer than the 83-93 V-8 shaft.  The difference is considered negligible, but the pilot bearings are also different sizes."  Most hate the near 4.00 1st gear in the 2.3 T5.

It's going behind souped up 2.3.  Torque rating is fine for them as my other t5 came out turbocoupe.

If it has no issues that is a good price. Even at a Pick Your Part 40% off sale you are probably looking at about $120 - and you still need to pull it out yourself.  Have you had a look inside yet? Oh, and does the bearing cap match like in the photo for a WC T-5?

Here is a nice tear down/explanation of the T5. http://www.mustangandfords.com/how-to/drivetrain/1506-everything-you-ever-wanted-to-know-about-the-t-5-five-speed/
