Rear Brakes ???
« on: November 22, 2017, 11:41:39 AM »
The 1972 and 1978 are different??

I was gonna put the air cooled rear drums on my 72, but the auto sites and ebay ads say they're not the same.
My 71 has one air cooled type on it now . Here's a Photo of my my 72 project :)

The 78 will have wider brake shoes than the 72. They can be used on a 72 if you use the entire brakes. Backing plates / brake shoes / brake drums and all hardware.

you're saying to use all 78 Brake parts?,

Also, I'm buying new front brake lines for my 72. It was build in Oct of 71 so it calls for the 15 5/8" long hose lines, but the ones on there now look stretched to the max, looking like they're not even long enough when you turn the wheel all the way. So I was thinking on going for the 16 5/8" Long Hose, Cars built after 1-1972 thinking that's what it needs. You Think I should go with that. Auto store site says thread size is the same.

I was Also attempting to install a 78 pinto Sway Bar today, But it looked like it was gonna rub the brake hose over time, so I decided not to install it.

Thanks for the input.

The 78 has a larger axle hub than the 72 so the 78 drum will not center itself properly on the 72 smaller hub.  I believe the early wagon drums are wide like the 78 and have a small hub hole to register on the 72 small hub.  I have used the larger hub drum on the small axle hub by lightly applying the parking brake, then rotating the drum backwards till it is stopped by the wheel studs, then mount the wheel and torque the lugs.  This is a pain as you have do this process every time you change tires and it does not center the drum as well.

While there has been discussion about brakes and the hub or more importantly the center hole in the brake drum, there has been no mention between the 6-3/4" rear end and the 8" rear end.

I'd assume at some point Ford adopted the larger size center hole on later years based on what others have said here. For the record, my '73 wagon had the smaller hole/hub. This was with the 6-3/4" rear end. And when I went to a 8" rear end the original drum didn't fit.  The 8" had a large center brake drum hole that I assume, but can't confirm fit a later version of the 6-3/4" as well???

Anyway, in addition to the stated difference between drums in certain years there is the different rear ends that might be a factor also. Since the original posted says they have one of each brake drum type on their car now is it possible that it is  6-3/4" rear with one side having a later axle swap (if that is even possible?).

Why the worry over the rear brakes? The rear brakes do very little of the stoping and only keep the car going in a straight line as you use the brakes to stop. Stop worrying about them as they only do about 10% of the stoping. The only reason the factory's went to disc brakes on the rear was they were cheaper to mfg than drum brakes.

I've always wondered about that. Disc brakes sure have a simplicity to them. Still I see drum brakes on the "lesser" (cheaper) cars. So, it is confusing.

I read about the disc brakes being cheaper in an automotive trade magazine that I use to get while I lived in Denver. Think about it. A disc brake really only has 2 parts. A rotor and a caliper and both are complete when the mfg receives them. Drum brakes on the other hand has many small parts plus the brake shoes.
