ranger header swap

hi all, i put a 95 ranger header on my sons first pinto wagom (79). the problem is the holes in the exhaust ports the went to the stock egr tube molded into the castiron manifold. what's the best way to seal of the holes?  or how to fix the problem?  thanks 1st time owner, and new to your forum... gary d.

1st of all,  :welcome: to the site! Most anything you want to know about a Pinto can be found right here!
About the only thing you can do is find/make something to plug the holes. I.E. allen head plugs, small freeze plugs tapped in the holes, bolts with the head cut off and a screwdriver slot cut in the end, even JB weld will work. IIRC, the flange covers part of the hole so use some loc-tite, make it flush with the head and bolt the header back on.  8)
If you don't have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over?

Hi Gary:

This topic is near and dear to my heart, because I had a '79 wagon that I added a header to and had the SAME PROBLEM!

Let me say first that the engine will run like a bat out of hell with those egr holes left open  :hypno:. I could not believe the horsepower gain - it was like a difefrent car. I only ran it this way for a week, afraid that I might burn valves by keeping the holes open (besides, it would never pass inspection that way).

At any rate, my solution was to take large bolts, lterally hammer them in to the holes, and cut them flush to the head. While it was not the best solution, it worked great - and cut my horsepower down to the same bland level it started at!

thanks for the advice, i found some round stock that fit snugly (with hammer) in the holes, sounded better , but didn't drive yet.. working on the rear driver floor (small rust hole), and putting in new sunfire seats... send pics when we're done.. thanks again.. gary d.

Hey guys,

I did the same swap, but after plugging the holes, I made some steel plates to cover the holes, sandwiched between the mabifold and the head. No leaks. See pics below
