Question on painting
« on: February 22, 2014, 02:15:29 PM »
I am doing 4 cars as some of you know. My question is on paint. For example, I am doing the Maverick and Mustang down to metal and jams and everything. The Pinto, I would like to do under the hood and everywhere else. Just did the inside of the trunk today on the Maverick.

Can you paint a single stage, let's say under the hood or in the trunk and jams and later paint the car? Is that possible? Or will there be a problem later? This is my Maverick trunk for example and I would like to paint certain areas first and go back. I have PPG two stage paint for this one though. Maybe you don't need clear in those areas that aren't in the sun like the jams, rockers, trunk and hood?

Let me know and thanks!

I guess I could do it all at once when I'm painting. But just think it might be easier to do certain areas one at a time.

You mean in the trunk? The primer is lacquer and the inside of the trunk is that duplicolor speckle paint. I use lacquer since it dries real fast - well not so much in the cold :P Used 3 cans thought it would have been 5. I am so not looking forward to doing the trunk in the Galaxie LOL That thing is in the same shape as the Maverick was and a LOT bigger!

Be careful where you put the duplicolor speckle paint, I used it on my 1954 willys gas tank, after it rained the next day it all washed off :(
Remember with lacquer, you can put acrylic over lacquer but not lacquer over acrylic, it will wrinkle up and fall off.
You could go single stage on the inside and base clear on the outside.
Although on light traffic areas you might consider using base and then using the buzz bomb clear made by u-pol (don't quote me but from memory it is u-pol)might be easier being able to stay with one system.

Just my 2cents

The water turned it to mush, maybe I had a bad can or something, I have seen many people use it with good luck on interiors but with my jeep being open to the elements at the time it was too much for it.

I need to read the instructions. No cans left, but it would say interior or exterior.

I followed the instructions ones on mine. Seems like you shouldn't do it on enamel. I did mine over lacquer. You should be able to get lacquer in rattle cans I think, not certain though.

I suppose it could have been a bad can, but improper surface prep is the far more likely culprit.  The biggest problem with rattle cans is that people who know absolutely nothing about painting will buy one and just start spraying, expecting professional-looking results.  It doesn't work that way.  All the information and tips on the Duplicolor site apply to ALL paint application whether you are using a rattle can or a top-of-line spray gun.  Prep, prep, prep!!!

I took my trunk down to metal for the most part, ground out the rust, treated with that rust stuff, and when it was good, shot it with lacquer primer. After that dried for a day (didn't have to wait that long) painted with the speckle stuff. It certainly look professional! The trunk actually looks better in person than on the picture I have here.

True... and darker colors are the least forgiving of all.  You can always wet sand and buff out any imperfections, but that too is an art.  You seem to have the patience of Job so I think your paint is going to turn out just fine!  Whatever you do, don't rush and don't take any shortcuts!

I just want it right and when painted as near perfect as possible. That's why I got glide coat for finding ALL those little imperfections and it works great!

FYI, the paint companies have all been messing with their paint formulas to remove heavy amounts of VOC, that will result in lacquer not really having the traits the lacquer of old had. People who use Krylon have been saying their stuff is awful now. Supposedly the cans of lacquer are not lacquer at all anymore.

I know for a fact house paint has gone the same way, just try to get the most expensive paint you can buy now for exterior to last even 1/3 as long as it used to, impossible. Now it splits after 3 years, before, it stayed elastic for 15+ years, the only thing that made it come off was the old paint underneath lifting it loose.

I agree with the prep comments as to why paint washed right off, no paint does that if properly applied. You must have some hellacious acid rain there. I've got Duplicolor on cars and it's been there for many years and we have pretty high concentration of acid rain here.

Rust 'treatment' is a waste of time to me, the rust always shows back up and because part of the treatment is usually water based or miscible, again to lower VOC emissions and pollution. I glassbead or sandblast big rust spots to 100% remove every atom of rust. That or completely cutting the affected part out is all that will completely stop it.

Well, I grind the crap out the rust, think I posted some pics, but here it is. I grind it off hard until there are no signs. I used the rust remover just in case so to speak. My cars have been sitting for LONG periods of time and the surface rust is deep so I grind it out. Maybe I can skip that other stuff I guess and not waste the money or time on it.

Acrylic lacquer is not the same as the old school stuff, so it might be OK. I just don't know. This is the King Cobra. If you notice, it was deep rust so I ground it off until it was all gone. I do the whole car, you wouldn't believe that even if the paint looks OK, there is probably rust under it. On the Pinto, I ended up sanding and grinding most of the paint off.

To do these, I take 20 grit and then 40, then 80 and then vibrate it down smooth with 160 - love that purple stuff from 3m :)

It takes some work for certain! But doing it right and taking your time really seems to pay off!

Wow, I did NOT take mine down to metal EXCEPT where it was necessary. I painted and primed right over the original coats - and had no problems at all. But like the thread reads, painting DOES reveal flaws - and that's good - because what I thought was really patient, careful bodywork wasn't bad - but definitely wasn't perfect. And then of course I'm spraying with a dark brown metallic enamel - so the flaws REALLY show :)

I'll be happy when it's done but I will have someone who has the proper facilities do the final coat. I can minimize, but can't eliminate dust.

The Pinto will have metal flake, and I may add pearl to it also. Now with the air damn coming, I'll want it prefect! So I use the guide coat like crazy. I gotta tell you popbumper, I started with only wanting to do areas that needed stripping/grinding and leaving the other areas for just wet sanding. The more I took off, the more needed to. I've probably got about 60% stripped down on the Pinto and when I'm done it will more than likely be 80% or more. I keep finding stuff :(

I am painting it with a fake cheap paint booth setup. The dust should be minor.

I may bring it somewhere though, like I did the Galaxie (but that car doesn't fit in my garage LOL). So I may have it painted in a booth.

Speckle paint is a water base paint, and in Eastwood's catalog, they tell you to put a clear coat over the speckle paint to seal it. That why it washed off when it got wet.
Its better to be a has-been, than a never was.
