What is a reasonable price to pay for a paint job.  (I plan on fixing the rust spots myself and spot painting them with primer.)  Thanks, jt

It's a big question and cost can vary all over the map. From my perspective, nearing paint myself, the lowest I have found is from MAACO, where if I do all the work and deliver them a fully taped/prepped body, they'll shoot it for $400. I look at it this way - I am depending on them for their SPRAYING/booth capabilities alone, not any of the actual prep/bodywork. Of course, materials will cost me about another $500, so $1k after all is said and done would be my cost.
I don't think that's too bad, though I expect a decent job, and am not quite sure they can do it; I still need to shop around. Good luck.

I too am working on my paint prep. The primer alone is costing $180 gallon.  $60 for the reducer.  Have spent over $50 on sand paper, and $30 for bondo... and I have only got the two front fenders done.  Don't want to think too hard yet as to how much the paint is gonna run.  Anyway my point is, it's good if its cheap, but can be brilliant for less.  Shop carefully and find a trusted paint/body person to give you any pointers they can.  I have learned a ton already.

Here in Denver each Maaco is independently owned. I played them against each other for my business. I skipped the one with the bad reputation.
Then they have several grades of paint jobs. I took the two best bids to the place I liked the best and said give me a reason to choose you. He rewrote the bid and I got the best paint job at the price of the intermediate paint job. With the better guarantee. In this economy everyone will fight to get your business. This was three years ago. I don't know what prices are now. good luck

i would have to say you get what you pay for.
there is a lot of time in prep work and that it the base of a paint job. the guy spraying at maaco does it all day so a new car to a old car the paint comes out of the gun the same. good luck!!

I might add that when I talked to MAACO I told them I would be supplying my own paint. Why? One if the reasons that they are so low is because they use cheaper grades of paint. I would rather use real PPG Deltron acrylic enamel from my paint supplier and give it to them rather than have them mix me something of lower quality. My ONLY concern with this is that, while they spray paint all day/every day, they may not have much experience with shooting good quality acrylic enamel, as most if the time nowadays cars are painted with urethanes. So much to consider.
