Title: Oooops, I did it again..... A '76 wagon this time :)
Post by: Pinto5.0 on August 05, 2012, 10:22:12 PM
I have got to stop buying every Pinto that crosses my path  ::) .

My daily driver Neon has been run into the ground & I have a to-do list that's as long as my arm & I need to spend at least a month getting it reliable again. I wanted to drive Callisto while I R&R the Plymouth but between my overkill on the restoration & the 20 things that popped up needing addressed immediately, I just can't get Callisto on the road soon enough.

A few miles from my house this '76 wagon was for sale so I bought it as a driver to let me whip my Neon into shape.

Apparently it's an original Squire with all the trim & woodgrain removed. It's got 60K original miles & sat in a body shop the last 10 years.

If I keep it the lower quarters are going to need replaced & the paint is a 20 footer at best but the 2.3L engine runs great(now that I tuned it a bit) & holds 40 pounds oil pressure. The automatic transmission shifts smooth but I'm not a big automatic fan. A 4-speed swap is in it's future if I keep it.

Thanks guys  8)  but the pics make it look a bit better than it does in person. The paint shines somewhat but the bodywork under it is rough. There are deep sanding marks & the whole car will need re-done at some point. It's a 20 footer but at least it's better than primer & rust. For a grand I did OK but I have a long road ahead on this car.

With the exception of both lower quarters that are loaded with patches & bondo & the drivers floorpan I can't find any rust on her. A panel wagon(no portholes) was always a future build on my to-do list & I think this is a good candidate.

It will make a good driver/parts runner for a couple years while I whip my other cars into shape. My daughter wants my Neon(48K orig miles) as her 1st car which is 6 years away but that gives me time to get this car right before it becomes my main driver. With that in mind I'm not planning anything radical for this wagon. No V8, no turbo, just a good running 2300 & since I have all the parts probably a 4-speed swap.

I put near 100 miles on it over the weekend & it ran great other than a tendency to run close to 200 degree water temps in the 90 degree heat. Someone already replaced the 36 year old hoses & belts recently bit it's still sporting the ORIGINAL radiator, water pump & thermostat.

I ordered a brand new radiator from AutoZone($115 with discounts) & a new, not rebuilt, water pump plus a thermostat from Advance($32 after discounts) & I'm hoping that's all I need to spend on her for awhile. That's on this weekends to-do list along with checking the timing since I can pull the belt cover while it's apart.

Supposedly it's got a new timing belt & I suspect the lack of power is the 36 year old carb but I wanna double check the belt while I can. My '75 wagon was a 2.3L/auto & I seem to remember it having some balls. This thing isn't getting good mileage & power is non existent & that's going to get resolved real soon. I'll rebuild the carb & see where I need to go from there if that doesn't solve it. The cat's already been removed BTW.

I'm not enthused by the interior colors but at least it's not shredded.

I spent all day dodging rain drops & installed a new water pump, radiator, thermostat & upper & lower hoses. While I had the timing cover off to replace the pump I checked the timing at the belt since it was replaced before I got it & holy shizod it was off.

That sure explains my lack of power. It was off 35 degrees. I'm amazed it ran as good as it did though it really was a sled & couldn't maintain 65 mph.

I need this to be reliable so I just bought everything new. Grand total was roughly $170 which money was well spent. My engine temps went from 195 deg. in traffic to 175 deg. after idling for 45 minutes in my driveway.

Out with the old.....

and in with the new.....

BTW, the car runs great now that I solved the timing issues. I ran it to 80 mph & still had more left in her.

Thanks Bart. The pics make the interior look 10 times better than in person but it's not bad for 36 years old. The dash pad is still soft & has a small split which I can live with but the drivers seat is worn paper thin. I haven't made a plan for this car yet other than a driver but I have some ideas in the back of my head.

I always wanted a thin bumper sedan delivery & this may be the perfect car to do that with.

Yesterday I drove home an '87 Mustang LX that I found for $350 bucks. It has a 2.3L EFI with a T-5 trans. I wanted to do an EFI(non-turbo)/5-speed swap into this wagon down the road so I got a jump on it.

The only problem I face now is what to do with the rest of the Mustang after I strip out the drivetrain & wiring. I was planning to sell some parts off it & scrap the remains but this car is clean. I cant find any rust through & the floors are nice. I'm now debating on installing my 5.0/T-5 that was destined for my '73 & selling it for a profit.

I've been leaning towards a 2.3L turbo in the '73 with these $4.00 gas prices anyhow. Decisions, decisions, decisions..... .. :-\

i would pop in the 5.0 in the mustang and let her fly, every kid out there wants one and a easy $5,000.00 if its cleand and runs strong! just my 2 cents.
plus like you said gas prices keep climbing thats why im doing the 2.3 turbo set up in my wagon!

I took a good look at the car today & while the car is clean I will literally need a parts car to replace all the trim & interior pieces that the previous owner bought the car for. I'll end up wasting a year & a couple grand to get this car rolling & ready to sell. I'll just strip it out, sell the parts I don't need & scrap the remains.

you could always sell the body to some one wanting to build a race car either drag or circle. just a thought.

good luck

I just picked these up for the wagon an hour ago down in Cincinnatti. These will be on it by Saturday since the hubcaps just aren't doing it for me.

My Neon is nearly finished & should be back on the road in 2 or 3 weeks so then I can get back to my Pinto's.........

I picked up my Cruizin' Wagon side panels friday.

I just have one question about how they mount. At the front & rear are vertical flanges with screw holes running vertically. Does something cover those once they are screwed on? Am I missing some trim pieces?

I finally swapped wheels to rid the wagon of the "grandpa" look. Now I can drive it as-is until I whip the new wagon body into shape.

I just have one question about how they mount. At the front & rear are vertical flanges with screw holes running vertically. Does something cover those once they are screwed on? Am I missing some trim pieces?

The side panels mount along the vertical flanges as well as inside along the window channels.  If you flip the panels over you should see a bunch of small holes along the inner edges.  Inside the window channels, there are some plates that are spot welded that hold the inner carpet panels on along the bottom.  Those carpet pieces should have some plastic channel pieces and clips up top.  Unfortunately I do not have any pictures of those.  On the outside there are some corner pieces needed to trim out the drip rail and some moldings that cover the vertical screw holes.  The ones on the rear are metal and are painted body color.  The moldings near the doors is grey and are rubber with a metal strip in them.  I have a set of the corner moldings if you are interested but none of the other pieces.  Here are some pictures from the wagon I used to own.

Oh, that's you I bought the front spoiler from lol. I'm the guy who messaged you on Ebay about whether you had those missing pieces.

I paid way too much for the porthole panels because they were local & saved me 70 bucks shipping but I never owned a Cruising Wagon to know I was going to be missing pieces. My plan was to shoot them red & pop them on my wagon over a weekend. Instead I gave up & went back to my original plan.

I always wanted a true panel wagon & after talking with Pinturbo75's dad about how easily his were welded solid I'm just going that route on the '74 wagon shell.

^^Here's my replacement body^^. Mine needs quarters, doors, floor repairs & I found a few hidden issues that are probably much worse than they look. I can now whip this body into shape, get the 2.3L EFI out of my '87 Stang installed & wired & get it right while I drive mine till I'm ready to strip the last parts off it to complete the new one.

^^This is the vision of a panel I always had in my head anyhow so I may as well do it right the 1st time^^. I'm also leaning towards welding up the rear window like authentic deliveries & the Ford parts don't fit the theme.  I'll hang the porthole panels on my wall as a lesson on how to waste 175 bucks on parts I can't use unless someone out there really needs them.

This car has turned into a major project since I got the replacement shell for it. So much for just making a nice driver out of it on the cheap.  :'(

I was planning to use the stock EFI from the '87 Stang until I found a Merkur harness cheap. Now it's getting a turbo & I think I'll install the EFI on Callisto in a year or two.

I also ordered Wheel Vintique Smoothies with a 4-bolt pattern in 14x6 & 15x7 as well as '42 Ford hubcaps & ribbed trim rings for it. This should compliment the black suede paint I decided on.

I need to get them powdercoated red but this is what I'm gonna end up with.

I love rounding up parts for a build, it lets my imagination run wild. I always wanted a street rod but it's even more impractical than my Mustang so giving my wagon the "rod" treatment should check that one off my bucket list.

Finally snapped some pics of the turbo parts for the wagon. I have the complete bottom end from an '83 Turbo Coupe with 52,000 miles on it. I think I may re-do the hed off my '87 parts car, install a roller cam & bolt it on this engine.

I have the E6 manifold which I didn't want to run because of the blower motor clearance issue. I'm still leaning towards a center exit header by the time I'm ready to assemble this car but right now money is tight.

I have the inline intake which I wanted so I can build a box plenum down the road when I start pumping up the power. I gotta find 30# injectors & a fuel rail but that's easy stuff.

I also have the small VAM which I'll use untill I jump to bigger injectors & a bigger turbo.

I have plenty of intercooler piping, silicone connectors & clamps. It's a generic kit with 2 1/2" tubing & a blowoff valve. I got it all cheap from an abandoned project so the price was right.

It looks pretty but my assumption is that it's cheap Chinese junk that will self destruct the 1st time I bang through the gears. I guess I'm gonna find out in about a year.

I also have the stock '83 turbo but I need an exhaust housing & downpipe. I need to find a turbo shop that can assess it & let me know if it needs anything or is good to go as-is.

I haven't had much spare cash lately but I followed up some leads on some cheap turbo parts & combined with what I had laying around I should have everything I need for this wagon & the '80 Runabout plus enough spare parts to keep me running indefinitely.

This is the shortblock I plan to use in the wagon. It has 52K miles on it & the $100 price included the 52K mile T-3 from an 83 Turbo Coupe. The bottom end is buttoned up but until I get the head on it I stuffed the cylinders with WD-40 soaked paper towels. It seems to be keeping rust away for now.

I splurged a whopping $67 on Ebay for the front mount intercooler. It should get the job done & it fits nicely up front.

Now I just need this neverending winter to go the eff away......
Title: Re: Oooops, I did it again..... A '76 wagon this time :)
Post by: Pinto5.0 on May 27, 2013, 11:47:38 PM
I've had an issue with this car draining all the brake fluid out of the master cylinder to the rear brakes since I bought it & a left front caliper that sticks when the car sits for a couple weeks. I've never found a leaking brake line nor a leaky wheel cylinder to account for it so I assume it was the master cylinder.

I had Friday off so I installed a new master cylinder, rear wheel cylinders, rebuilt calipers, front brake pads, front hoses & all new rear brake springs. The rear brake shoes were in great shape & probably have another 20,000 miles left in them so I didn't replace them or the front rotors which looked like they were replaced less than 5K miles ago. I already re-packed the wheel bearings when I bought the car & they looked near new as well.

Wow, what a difference that made to my stopping ability. They felt fine before swapping everything but now it really feels firm. Best part is I'm no longer losing fluid. Thanks to discount codes for Advance Auto I spent just under 100 bucks(Gotta love how cheap most Pinto parts are) to completely R&R my brakes.

Next on the list is gonna be swapping upper/lower control arms since the upper bushings are pretty dry rotted. Ball joints & inner/outer tie rods as well as rack boots look great(60K mile car) but I have a full set of control arms I got off Ebay for 100 bucks that were blasted, painted & fitted with a full Speedway kit so I think I'll make time to install those before winter & get an alignment.

So far I just moved it over & covered it. That never ending winter we just got out of has me over 2 months behind on my to-do list. I did get the '77 scrapped & got the '80 in the garage & started working on it so hopefully I can get to the wagon this fall.

I picked up an NOS carb for the wagon last week & decided to install it Friday since I'm tired of this cars crappy 14-17 mpg. While I was at it I decided to install the rebuilt distributor I had as a spare.

When I pulled the cap off the stock distributor I found half the rotor contact plate was gone & the button in the cap was history. These were replaced before I got the car & had maybe 5K miles on them. I'm betting this wasn't helping my mpg's any but the car was running awesome & I put 2500 miles on it this way with no clue it was bad.

The carb needs some tuning yet but it feels like I gained 50 HP in this car. Wow, what a difference going 35 mph barely touching the gas where before I was giving it 1/4 throttle with the 36 year old carb.

Now if I can get it tuned correctly it should be a pleasure to drive.

It's a shame they only come in 7" width but a 205/55/15 should fit the front without rubbing if you didn't lower it. A 245/50/15 would be a good match for the rear & it's an inch taller.

BTW, my rears are 185/80/13 which is why they fill the wheelwells up. My fronts are shorter & I think they're 175/70/13

Nahhh not lowered and the wife don't want it lowered she likes it just the way it is(ok with me less work, lol)right now it has 175/80/13 all around but nobody here has them and want a fortune to order them, 185's would look nicer though. But I don't know wife don't want to spend a bunch of money on looks just have a nice reliable car, so I may just go with the 13's be still cheaper than buying 15" wheels and tires.

I finally went through 3/4 tank of gas with the new carb. It still needs some tweaking but 21.3 mpg with mostly around town driving isn't too shabby. That's at least a 35% increase over the stock carb & I hope it keeps up. I think with the correct adjustments it can pick up another 10% so tuning is next.

I also picked up a new cap/rotor with brass HEI style terminals & a set of MSD 8.5 mm wires for an '87 Mustang 2.3 along with a set of Denso Platinum TT plugs. I picked up a slight miss after swapping the junk cap/rotor & wires for some used ones I had lying around while I waited for the good parts to come in. Hopefully I can get to that this coming weekend.

It's an NOS 5200 for a '75 2.3/auto. I had to swap water choke housings but otherwise it was a perfect fit. I still can't get the choke set correctly but I'm working on it.

I was only getting 13-15 mpg with the factory carb though it ran flawlessly. It just didn't have any response & rebuilding didn't help

Had to have been something internally wrong with it then to get that bad of mileage, didn't check the mileage on mine when I drove it home but seems like I went a heck of a long ways before the needle started moving.

I didn't soak the carb when I rebuilt it, I just tossed a kit at it & hoped for the best. I'm sure a thorough rebuild may have fixed it but the NOS carb was a bolt on & fairly cheap. Since this engine will eventually end up in my '80 I figure it was worth getting it right now.

I spent a few hours under the hood & the choke is now adjusted & functions correctly. Yay me! Now if it still does it in the winter I'll be thrilled. I also installed the new late model cap/rotor, plugs & MSD wires. When I pulled the old cap off I found another ruined rotor under it.

I checked the distributor for a bent shaft but it's fine. I have no explanation for how 2 different rotors got torn up in 2 different caps. All I know is the late model cap/rotor is fine & I've pulled it 2x just to make sure. I'm also carrying a spare cap/rotor in the car now JIC.

I still have a bobble & variable idle that I can't seem to eliminate so I buttoned everything up & sprayed starting fluid around the base of the carb & the idle smoothed out instantly. Apparently the EGR plate to manifold gasket is leaking. That's next weekends job. I may change the intake & valve cover gaskets while I'm digging in. At some point I have to run out of stuff to replace!!

The wagon came in handy fixing my trailer. I parked it on top of the center rail to bend them back the other way before welding the new crossmembers in place. It worked perfectly.....

I've overloaded this trailer many times over 27 years so the 5/8" sagging in the center is expected but it's gone now & it's perfectly level. As soon as it's done I can go pick up the '71 & bring it home.

I changed the EGR to manifold gasket because it was leaking along the front. The new one got a light coat of Permatex on both sides to keep it sealed. I also picked up a new carb gasket because I was having doubts about the sealing ability of the 37 year old NOS gasket that came with the carb.

After all this work & swapping to the late model cap & rotor I now have pre-ignition & run-on that wasn't there before. I backed the timing down to 16 from 20 & it helped with the valve knock under load but this thing still isn't right.

Does anyone know if the increased rotor sweep(nearly 3x the stock style) is causing any of this by allowing longer spark duration from the coil?? I may have to start a thread on this one.

I also swapped out my oil pressure gauge that wouldn't read steady. Now I show 60 psi at 70 mph.

OK, I've swapped in Autolite 103 plugs which are 2 heat ranges colder. I also pulled the top off the carb & swapped in all 4 jets from the factory carb which were larger in an attempt to richen it up. I still have run-on & pre-ignition with the timing backed down. This week I'm going to file the rotor tip & see if that cures it.

If it doesn't I think I may put the smaller air jets back in with the larger fuel jets & if this 5200 works like a Weber IDF it should richen the A/F ratio considerably. As a last step I'll try premium fuel but that's gonna get expensive over the long term & I'm still clueless how changing to a quality plug wire could cause me to need premium fuel.

I am with you in that the ignition upgrades should not cause run on.  Verify that there is no voltage at the   12V coil terminal during run on.  With no voltage, I can not see how the ignition system could cause run on (the new cold plugs should eliminate them as "glow plug" sources).  If possible, try lowering the idle speed to see if it reduces run on.

Since winter hit in early October I only use the wagon a couple days a month but between the crappy gas mileage & the pre-ignition I'm just frustrated with this car. Today I picked up a fresh 2.3 turbo shortblock with all ARP hardware, gapless rings & new bearings for $300 so as soon as we thaw out I'm gonna put my fresh 79 turbo head on this shortblock as well as my spare D6 intake, new distributor & another NOS carb I have & swap this sucker in.

I'm debating on throwing another ignition box on it as well just to eliminate every last remaining part that could be causing either the fuel mileage or run-on problems. Eventually this bottom end will get a ported head & T-3 turbo but I really need to fix the issues with this wagon so this seems like the easiest solution.

I'm getting closer to my engine/trans swap in the wagon. I picked up a rebuilt 85ish Ranger engine that is .040 over & ran great.

I'm saving the round port head for use with my buggy since I have a matching dual Weber intake that's going on it. I cleaned up the block & a D port turbo head I had on the shelf.

I need to get it assembled & painted ASAP but time is at a premium lately. I have matching D port intake for the head ready to paint.

I bought a brand new Weber 38 to replace the stock progressive. I'm tired of messing with the NOS stock carb & not getting anywhere.

In an attempt to eliminate every problem this car is giving me, especially the 14 mpg issue, I am changing EVERYTHING I can think of. Besides the new engine, head & Weber I picked up an NOS distributor, NOS Duraspark box, new MSD Blaster 2 coil, NOS Ranger header & a new 2" in/out Dynomax muffler.

I have a nice polished plenum & filter I wanted to run on it so I found this billet adapter that is a perfect fit on the 38.

I'm also ditching the automatic for a T5 so I bought a new clutch kit & flywheel to go with the 87 Mustang bellhousing & T5 so I'm not guessing on throwout bearing length or flywheel to starter issues.

I put the pedals in the car a few days ago & I'll install the cable after I clean & paint the engine compartment.

I also stripped an 80 that had a tight manual steering rack & coupler so while the engine is out I'll swap out the worn power rack for the manual.

I got it from propane-kits on ebay. The opening is too big for a 36 though they claim it would fit.

The shame of it is that I'll be cutting this car up & scrapping it when the other wagon body is ready to roll. Luckily I'll be using all these parts on the new one.

No, this car took the late pedals. I haven't looked under the dash of the other wagon to see if it takes late or early style. The set you sent me will probably end up in the 71 I'm bringing home Saturday. It's been a V8 automatic for decades but I need the brake pedal for my 73 to run a 2.0/auto. for my stepson & the 71 has to get a T5.

No problem. They will sell just the adapter by itself if you message them. $89 sounds like a lot until you see the prices people want for adapters that wont fit the 38 & only fit the 32/36 carbs.

It's for a Dodge Durango V6 but I think the hoses are on the wrong side for a 302. The in/outlets are also the same size as stock 2.3 hoses. If you play around with Summit's parts finder you can input hose sizes & locations & find ones that should fit. I have an aluminum Griffin 2 core (1.25" cores) for a street rod with SBF in/out locations that should cool 450 HP & it only cost me $120. I forget the exact size but it's something like 19"x21" & it fits between the framerails.

Honestly, I saw some Pinto Parts on Craigslist and when I called the fenders were already gone (I wanted one instead of doing the bodywork). He sold the seats (blue though) and almost everything else. I called the day after the ad was posted. Yeah, Pinto parts LOL  So now I check twice a day.

I must have missed something, but why do you have to cut up and scrap this body when you are ready to build the other car? Or did you switch cars in the middle of this with the one with the bad floors?
I also got lost on when the run on stuff happened, it sounded like the car was running great.
Confused.  :-[ Or it could be the lack of a/c right now and being in Phoenix and frying my brain out.

This car was hit hard in the drivers quarter at one time plus again in the front. It still drives straight but there is a lot of hidden damage, not to mention rust. The other body is clean & has never been hit but the title is MIA. I need this car for that plus the interior, dash & all wiring. I'm going to save anything else that's usable but this body is shot.

It ran decent but has never gotten more than 15 mpg on it's best day. I've swapped everything on the engine trying to solve the fuel usage issues to no avail. I'm also now using water with no external leak so I'm thinking head gasket. If I have to tear into it that far I'm going to swap it out for another engine plus every new part I can replace in hopes I solve the mpg dilemma. I hate slush boxes so I'm popping one of my T5's in it while I'm at it. This is the drivetrain that will go in the other wagon shell & eventually become my daughters car so it's not just a waste of time since it has a future date with that car.

I found myself switching jobs which puts me 90 miles from home every day of the week. It's not worth the 3 hour round trip to go home daily so I rented a self storage to work on my cars while I'm sitting between runs. I built a loft for parts storage & brought everything I need including a generator for electricity.

It didn't take me long to get started. I had the old engine out by the end of the second day.

I swapped in the manual rack from the 80 after installing new boots, tie rod ends & bushings.

The 87 WC T5 is painted & ready to install along with one of my D5 direct pull bellhousings.

My truck has an air compressor so I use that to run my air tools & did some port clean up on the D-port head.

The engine is all painted up, has new gaskets, an NOS distributor, new timing belt & tensioner & should be going in next week.

At this rate I should have this car finished by mid August at the latest & can then bring the 80 hatch down & get moving on that car.

My clutch consists of a new Perfection flywheel, pressure plate & disc for an 87 Mustang. I know it's Chinese but they sell to Zoom & have a good rep so I should be in good shape.

I'm running one of my D5 direct pull bellhousings & during assembly discovered there was almost no clutch travel at the fork. I think the 75 flywheel is about 5/8" thicker than the one I'm running.

I swapped on a bellcrank bellhousing to check the travel since that's what my new flywheel was designed for. It has roughly an inch which only about half of that is needed.

I had a cracked bellcrank bell so I pulled the pivot ball out & swapped it for the 75 version since it's about 5/8" longer.

The longer pivot solved the problem & now I have 1-1/2" of travel so I installed everything with some red Loctite & buttoned it up.

I installed it Tuesday in about 15 minutes.

The 38/38 Weber looks great on there & between the NOS Duraspark, NOS distributor & the new MSD coil I have eliminated every single original piece on this car. I have a new NOS American made AC Delco fuel pump to replace the 40 year old original.

If this sucker still gets 14 mpg after all this I swear to god I'll set fire to it & burn it to the ground.

Wish I had thought to test fork movement on the floor like you did.
I installed my engine trans, had lots of stuff hooked up. Finally hooked up the cable......OPP S !
Pivot ball not long enough ! Had a Lakewood adjustable sent from the city for the fix.

Sleeping in the loft ?  ;D

The loft is filling up with parts week by week. Anything I may need is finding its way there. The toughest problem with working 90 miles from home is making sure I bring every part I could possibly need since there's no running home to my garage to grab it until the weekend. So far, so good.

I'm definitely glad I mocked up the clutch on the floor. I had a hunch the combo of a 1975 bellhousing & a 1987 flywheel & clutch was going to give me issues & I was right. I checked everything I could think of & the thickness of the flywheel was the only minor stumbling block. I have another D5 bellhousing for my 80 so now I know the fix going into that car since I have another new 87 style clutch for that car too. I could have just used the newer bellcrank bell but I had 2 of the 75's & I have 2 of the 79 D9 versions as well so why not make use of them.

Even though this car is my DD & beater all these parts will still be transferred to the other shell when the time comes so I want to get it right now for the sake of making the body swap easy down the road.

Clutch cable is in & hooked up. I've got good freeplay & plenty of throw.

Made my transmission mount from my old F150 work for the T5. I made this box to adapt the C4 into that truck & it was perfect in the Pinto.

I didn't even need to slot the holes in the stock mount.

I'm going to do the other 2 cars the same way. I like the clean look & no welding part.

It's #4 on the list after the 80 hatch then the 71 half hatch then the 72 V8 car. Most of the hard work on the 80 is done so it's mostly clean up, detailing & assembly. The 71 I just want to drive so it's gonna get a quickie assembly & I'll go crazy another day on it. The V8 car is gonna get the engine compartment & engine done to perfection & some primer on the body to make it one color so I can drive it. I'll work on it a little at a time while I'm driving it.

It sure looks pretty with everything clean & painted.

The front suspension was a nasty mess so I cleaned & painted everything. The upper control arms got swapped for a pair I had with new bushings & both ball joints are now new.

Swapped the headlights for some HID's & installed dedicated headlight wiring that runs power direct from the battery using relays instead of running all power through the headlight switch. All the stock headlight switch does now is turn them on.

Now that it's running I moved on to the body & paint. I always wanted to try moving my bumpers in but not all the way. I moved them back almost 2 inches which is perfect. I also got rid of the excess parts of the impact brace I didn't need.

I trimmed the rubber filler 2 inches & it came out great.

Under the red the drivers fender had 1/8" of paint. YES, 1/8" of paint, all 8 layers plus bondo. What a nightmare!

Under that mess was a 30 inch crease 1/4" deep filled with filler.

An hour of careful work with a hammer & dolly gave me a 90 percent improvement.

More dolly work got it ready for some filler, 1/16 inch versus the 1/4 inch I ground out.

A bit of primer later.....

Under the fender was this mess. Just another reason I have another shell to replace this one eventually.

I slathered everything in seam sealer & covered it in gray rustoleum paint.

Dug out 1/2 inch of bondo, all metal & fiberglass in the drivers door & found the whole front corner was GONE!

The back was swiss cheese as well.

I cut out the rust with the plan to just patch it to get me by a few years but it's a complete mess in the middle as well.

I've got another door with 90 percent less rust so I'm just gonna use it instead.

I took a break from the body to rid myself of the rubber isolators on the rear axle & make new perches. I needed a welder so I picked up this 110 volt Lincoln mig to run off my generator. It works great.

I painted the axle & springs with gray rustoleum

I also reinforced the shock mounts top & bottom.

Amazing like a hemorrhoid?! That was awful. I like the hid swap, looks really good. And there's something very cool about the pic with the fender sitting on the semi wheel.

The HID's have to be a huge improvement!  When I bought my '72 Squire and started back (about a four hour trip) from North Carolina with it, it got dark about halfway home.  I couldn't see a darned thing!  My friend Charlie was following behind me in my Lincoln MKT and whenever we were on these kinds of trips, we always kept a walkie-talkie set up for communication between us instead of fooling with cell phones.  I told him to pass me so I could follow those distinctive MKT taillights!  Between that and the light he was putting out with the HID's on the Lincoln, we made it home safely.  Other than that maiden voyage, I have not driven my Pinto at night so it has not been an issue.

Both fenders were off different cars. The passenger side had 3 colors on it but the drivers side had 8 without ever being stripped. The paint was do thick & had chips so deep that I originally thought there was 1/8" of bondo covering the entire fender until I sanded it down. The fenders will get used on the new shell in a few years so I took the time to fix them right.

The semi makes a good work bench LOL. The storage owner is nice enough to let me park it at my unit while I work which also makes it a 600 horsepower air compressor. Now that I have the ability to weld using my generator I can do pretty much anything there which is nice because I may have this job another year & a half before switching to the terminal near my house.

I installed halogens when I bought this car & never had much problem at night but the HID's are an experiment. They're a cheap $70 set from Taiwan but the quality is better than you would expect. If they perform as well as I think then the plan is to upgrade a couple other cars down the road with a better quality version NOT made in Asia. I'm also planning to french some LED fog lights into the bumper & out back some LED tail lights will replace the stock ones.

If I don't like any of the mods I wont duplicate them when I start prepping the new wagon body down the road. This car is still going to be my winter beater for a few years & this body is a mess but I want to take it from a nasty beater & make it presentable.

All painted up with new rustproof brake lines, wheel cylinders & an upgrade to 1/2" U-bolts.

Finally tackled my frenched marker lights. Welded up the stock ones.

Laid out the new location & drilled the perimeter.

Connected the dots with a pencil grinder then cleaned it up with a sanding roll.

Made a 3/8" deep ring & hand formed it to the new marker.

Welded it & cleaned it up & got a tight fit.

I fit it to the inside of the fender, tacked it then welded & ground it from the outside.

A coat of primer & it's ready for final blocking.

I've always wanted to try frenching lights but this is my first attempt. I always thought Pinto markers were massive & I really like the smaller 79-80 fronts but decided to try these Ford oval shaped ones & like the look.

I found some oval LED tail lights I might try out back plus a 3rd brake light I want to recess into the hatch.

I chopped out the rot & cleaned it up for welding.

Patched the holes in the doorskin.

Repaired the front corner with fresh sheetmetal.

The rear was replaced with part of the red door that wasn't completely rotted out plus some sheet steel.

Stripped the rest of the paint & it's all steel now. A few minor dings to smooth over with filler and it will be good to go plus some POR15 inside & out to keep future rust at bay.

Are you soda blasting? We are waiting on a whole new pressure pot system with a foot pedal to come this week. I can't wait!

Nice job making a good door out 2 crap ones. I build a lot of my cars that way. Things tend get pretty rusty before I get a hold of them. I love rust free projects too, but what do those owners do for fun?! Paint?!

I stripped it with wire wheels on my die grinder & my D/A sander. Blasting is the one thing my storage owner may frown upon. I can do it at home but dragging the door back & forth is a pain.

You are making good progress !

My next flurry of activity will likely be over the xmas break.

I'm behind where I wanted to be on this car. Since it's a driver my plan was to zip tie the body together just to get it on the road but it's so bad I can't even halfass the stupid thing. I'm just going to finish the doors, Tiger Hair what's left of the quarters, blow some cheap Street Rod satin black on it & call it a day. After I get the 80 hatch running I'm gonna bring the other wagon shell down & prep it for the parts swap ASAP.

Sort of know what you mean.

I had originally wanted to "quickly" go over the blue car, get a go fast toy on the road.

OCD kicked in.....

I think some may be surprised on how much I'm going to get into this to removed rust & strengthen the car (ie: welded seams, torque boxes, over built cage etc).

Will be a good start for the next owner, if I die of old age before getting it done  ;D

A little POR15 followed by some Blackcote on the inside & bottom of the doors. All that's left is to primer & paint it & get it back on the car.

An 1/8" indentation on the body line doesn't sound like much but it takes some work to get it straight.

I got back on mechanical work because winter is coming fast in Ohio. I put new U-joints & a new T5 yoke on the Aerostar aluminum driveshaft & installed it.

Next was cutting up the stock throttle cable bracket & welding it up to work with the Weber 38/38 which pulls down rather than up like the stock carb. It works perfectly.

I cut up the stock 76 downpipe & welded it together to work with the Ranger header.

It tucks neatly into the stock location.

I built the midpipe from 2" heavy wall aluminized exhaust tubing & some mandrel bends.

And I made an over the axle pipe the same way.

It's got plenty of clearance & does not rattle.

The U clamps are temporary. My flat band clamps arrived this week to replace them.

I welded the stuck muffler hanger to the new Dymomax muffler & tucked it in the stock location.

The tail pipe is just some scrap pieces. When the other shell is ready I'll make a nice dual exhaust to finish it off.

I cut & welded the stock battery clamp for my shorter battery & bolted it in place.

I closed up the shifter hole with some sheet metal. I'll weld it up nice on the next shell but I'm not wasting time on this mess of a back half so I screwed it down.

Here's a good shot of the buckled inner structure down the drivers side. This has always been a driver but there is so much damage it made another shell mandatory.

After all that I finally took it for a spin around the storage lot & got it up to 45 mph on the entrance road.

All that's left is the stereo which I'm working on now & throwing some paint at the fenders & door & getting it ready to drive this winter.

3rd last picture - the sound (?) deadener on the floor. Is it tar backed ? Meant for this application ? Light weight ?

Yeah, that truck is the perfect height & a LOT of work took place on those tires. Necessity at it's best.

It's not real heavy. I think it's made for sealing ductwork but it's adhesive backed. After they half baked the floor installation on that side they sealed it up with that stuff. The bubble insulation is just spray glued over that.

Thanks for all the pictures, really makes a build come alive!
Also like your bench, I have one Freightliner mudflap (used, million miles approx.) hanging in the garage, haven't found any particular use for it, other then nice decoration.

I've built so many cars & barely took any pics but I made up my mind to document these cars because even I forget what I do to get them back on the road & these threads are a great reminder.

My truck has come in very handy during this build. I can honestly say I doubt I could have gotten this far without it.

I finally got to paint the fenders. I propped them up in my storage & used my trucks air compressor to lay some street rod black on them.

And hung them on the car.....

I also primed the drivers door.

Then painted it though it wasn't quite ready & could have used some more blocking to get it perfect. I'll take care of that when the other shell is ready to paint. I put the glass in & the rubber on as well as the mirror.

Hanging a straight door showed me the quarter was hung in the wrong place entirely but I'm not worried about the mess. This will get scrapped eventually once I strip all these parts back off anyhow.

I buttoned up the engine

Installed a pair of air shocks

Screwed some sheet metal inside the rotted driver side wheelwell

I mounted my subwoofer out back. The 250 watt amp tucked nicely under the seat.

I just looked again. WOW, what a build. I just did my first rear quarter on a Camaro, but your welds are beautiful. Well compared to mine and the amount of welding.

That's awesome work!
