NOS Roof Rack Install
« on: April 15, 2014, 09:08:24 PM »
Fed/Ex Man brings cool stuff.......

Today he left me a NOS Roof Rack.  ( Thanks McDonald Parts..  )  Kit was 99.99% complete.  Missing 1 rivnut. Quick trip to hardware store fixed that.  Even had 40 year old install instructions and some sort of brown putty wrapped in wax paper.  Im guessing it was some sort of sealant back in the day.  Couple hours of install and now i have a place to mount my surfboard.

Thanks for looking,

I just don't like them, and I don't like anything screwed into the roof they're potential leakers, I already took one of the strips off and found rust around two of the  holes, so it's coming off along with the dumb wing as soon as I can find someone to do the body work on it.. :D

I didn't like it on my wagon so I took it off. Luckily the replacement body never had one so no holes to fill. The look I'm going for would be ruined by it.

I'd love to put one on my half hatch but just cant bring myself to drill the roof.

Love a roof rack on a wagon, but I pulled all the strips and filled the holes - all I'm gonna have is the outer peripheral parts. That's enough for me :). Looks superb though, nice job!!

Can I get a large picture of the roof rack installation guide? I have to take mine off and I'm worried I'll do something wrong. You can email it to me if it wouldn't be too much trouble...

Thanks,

Dianne

I did the same, left off the strips.

Home Depot like roofing patch or cement (flowable tar) will seal the screw holes bulletproof and lasts for years. What I use to seal any roof work involving holes. Have never ever had a leak from it.

Took the roof rack off of my Suburban tow truck and it looks 100% better. Made it look lower too.

Have any of you seen or used a removable gutter mount type rack? Something like you would see on an old bug?
