Title: Need to know which engine
Post by: dianne on January 24, 2015, 09:06:14 AM
As you may know, I have a garage now. So my guys and I were talking about the engine and a swap. I really don't need a 302 or other V8 in there since I have my King Cobra and thinking of a V8 conversion for the Spitfire. So, with that said, one of the guys said a 4 cylinder turbo from a Mustang Fox Body would work probably.

Any suggestions? I want more power and my guys will watch this thread also.

A yellow wagon would be awesome with some extra power than the 2.0

Dianne, the fuel injected turbo four was available from 83 to 89 the thunderbird turbo coupe from 83-88, svo from 84-86, and the merkur xr4ti until 89.. any of those are a good candidate for the swap.... the xr4ti has the easiest harness top use for the swap also...you will need 2.3 frame mounts since you have a 73 (like mine) .. good time for a t5 swap too...

Diane ,
A 2.0L with some minor rebuild upgrades is worth 150HP on 92 octane. That will spin the tires in 1st, 2nd with a L/S rear 8" 3.40 rear gear.  Just How much embarrassment will you inflict on those poor Ricers anyway? ;D My racer will run fine on 92 octane but does have those Pesky Dual Carbs that sound wicked at 7K RPM.. I can't tell you how much fun I had when they found out it wasn't a V8!! ;)

OK cool :) I know I love my Pinto, it's a keeper so I want to get a decent drive train in it. I like the idea of the turbo. And they are doing the first in the area swap of a Jeep 4.0 to a 5.0 and know that they are capable :)

Thanks :) I think that's the way I'm going to go. Did you hear that Aaron? LOL After the stang, this is the next one and no paint scratches LOL

I had an 84 turbo coupe back in the day. That car was fast :) The turbo caught on fire though and I lost the car. It's gonna be hard to find these cars and engines though. Initial search was nothing but I can call some yards in the area.

Wow the wiring harness on ebay is like $490.00. I think I'll start calling the yards!

I found a 2.3 l EFI on Craigslist from a fox body. But I'll call around. The 2.3 doesn't sound too bad!

A mustang?

Would rebuild the engine. Has an auto trans. I wouldn't pay this for it. But would the wiring hardness work with it? How much of swap work is there? I have Factory AC, would this work well in my Pinto?

I picked up a 2.3 EFI 1987 Mustang. It's coming with a new AC pump and compressor also. I can always make it a turbo :)

So this will go in the Pinto soon as it comes back from paint! Pretty cool :D

My understanding is I will need 2.3 frame mounts, I have Mustang II V8 mounts, but don't think that will fit. I'm thinking full rebuild, or an engine refresh as it's supposed to be fine. We'll know soon enough.

How hard will this one be?

Also, what gotchas are there?

I'm thinking something will be difficult. Does the 2.3 mounts use the mounts on the 2.3 87 engine?
