Mustang II front-end
« on: January 27, 2015, 07:10:19 PM »
Has anyone done a Mustang II front-end swap? I have the wrong front-end part for the King, so was wondering if anyone has done this before? If so what did you use?

I have a 73 wagon, and the wagon is not the same as 74 and up. I could keep what I have, but I want to change the ride some so it's like a Mustang :)

What have you all done here?
Vehicles:

- 1972 Plymouth Duster (To be a Pro Street)
- 1973 Ford Pinto wagon (registered ride 195)
- 1976 Mustang II mini-stock
- 1978 Mustang King Cobra II
- 1979 Ford Pinto Runabout
- 1986 Chevy K5 Blazer
- 1997 Suzuki Marauder

not much you can do, you can change the front spring rate but as for the rest it is very diffrent , the upper and lower arm are shorter and the spindel is not the same as the 74 up, 74 up pinto and mustang two share the same front end parts , but there are a few tricks you can do,  taller wheels , they always helped the ride of a pinto, and a spring replacement , yours over the years may have some sag to them, you can still get the springs made up , have to check for you ,

I'll look around. I just want a more modern ride. I guess replacing the rack and pinion will help on this. I can look. I am opening a machine shop in the next few months, and we're building CNC Plasma cutters and milling machines so I'm thinking we may be able to fabricate this!

You could look into the "universal" type II kits that are out there.
But either way, you would be looking at lots of cutting and welding. Which for you may not be a problem.  ;D
Most people wouldn't think it doable, but you aren't most people. And that is a good thing.  8)

the only thing I see bad on the car you have is the rack you have in it, it only fits that year, but still good if there is no slack in it and boots are good, 71 and 72 are the same and you can buy those cheep from flaming river, much to put on in yours , car is light enoughyou do not need power steering , as for ride and ride hight , you have to complete the car , knowing your going to put in the EFI 2.3 it might pick a few pounds , since I going to send you box of stuff to stuff in the engine I will send you some springs out of a 77 wagon is have , 74 up pinto/mustang two front springs are a tad bit taller , same dimeter , so you might have to get your guys (after the car is compleat and running ) install and check hight, cut down a tad until your happy with the right height ,

My guys can, read the one from Pinto_One below also. I'm going to try it and see how it does. The Mustang II Kits don't look too bad. How much difference would I get if we do that though in the drive? This is becoming more of a show car than a daily driver and I don't know if my baby will be be driven a lot on the roads now, but if I do shows I would end up driving more than likely and want something that rides nice. I drove this everyday for awhile, and could see myself doing that also though. I don't know until I feel the drive.

Like me? LOL thanks ;)

Yes I do know the kits, I help a few friends install a few over the years , and they weigh almost twice the org Mustang/Pinto does, because most were going into a larger and heaver car that some times has one of those mountain motors in it, still can be done but then you can go to power steering , but still I think I could save you much more if you want a wagon to fix up with the EFI , up dated mustang II/Pinto front end with power steering I believe it would save much time and money to borrow a trailer and drive down here and pick this up,  ::)

Idaho to Mississippi is far LOL Not a hop skip and a jump  ;)

They have replacement rack and pinions here for the 73 Pinto, maybe that and new coils like you said with larger tires will make it ride better. I have a set of wheels I'll put on it from the Mustang - although I love the look for the Pinto with those moons and trim rings too much.

I'll wait until the motor is swapped and decide :D

Thanks for all this info. Let me know when you round up all the parts!
