Title: just installed 38/38 carb
Post by: Jerry merrill on April 05, 2015, 02:18:34 AM
I just installed a weber 38/38 DGES carb on my 71, 2.3, 5spd trunk model. What a change for the better, feels like I just added 50HP, what a difference this made over the 32/36 motorcraft, best mod I have made yet. Not sure if it would work with auto or low numerical rear, mine has 3.55. Anyone else used one of these?

I put a Weber 38/38 DGAS on my Stock 72 2.0L and it was a night and day difference in pull on acceleration over even a Modded 32/36 carb. If you can fix the 2.3 L intake manifold flaws, or change it out for a better design, that 38 will scream. A Good header and exhaust work well and really compliment that carb. Jetting might be necessary, but it's minimal. The only thing that's more punchy is a pair of Sidedrafts properly sized for your motor mods if any.

Hi Jerry,

Where did you get the carb, and how much was it?

I found one on craigs list that was almost new for $100 including air filter. Weber carbs direct sells them for $219 new. I had to fabricate a mount for the intake throttle cable on the 2.3 as all I had is the 2.0 one. It works great so far with no changes to jetting.

I have one for my 76 wagon. I haven't put it on yet but I have everything to do it.

I also found an air cleaner adapter & had a TransDapt spacer drilled to adapt to the 2.3 intake. I can't wait to get this running.

There is some work involved since it's not a direct bolt on & it's not cheap but I've heard it makes an incredible difference in performance.

I have not heard of an adapter so I just used double gaskets, the stock thick ones and it works great. I cannot get over on how much better and how much more power it has.

If you have an inch to spare between the hood and air cleaner, put a carb. spacer in there. Do you have a header too?

I don't think there is an adapter that works without modifying it. Since a 2.3 intake has a Holley bolt pattern I used a 1 inch spacer & had a machine shop drill the 38/38 bolt pattern in it. It's perfect.

I have a Ranger header with 2 inch exhaust, milled head, adjustable cam sprocket and Ford roller cam, this carb woke it up big time.

just put the weber 38 on mine,no adapter plate needed for the bolt pattern on the 2.0l manifold, but it did need the linkage moved forward on the manifold to line up correctly, headers are next,as it's in a 52 jeep,
