My son needs a harmonic balancer for a '76 Mercury Bobcat. We have looked at salvage yards and JC Whitney. Tons of ebay ads with no luck. Any help would be appreciated immensely.

There is no harmonic balancer per say. Only a hub on the crankshaft about 4" in dia, that the pulleys bolt on to. At least my 2.3L engines are that way.

The mechanic said that the pulleys are separated? This is a complete learning experience for us. Am I looking for the wrong part?

Yes! The pulleys only bolt on to the hub. Thing does not look like a small block Ford.

Would you have ANY idea where to find this part? I have been on the internet and made almost 30 calls. My son goes to college in less than 2 weeks and this is his daily driver. PLEASE HELP.

Hi MSC,
If you have a 2.3L engine then you can contact Esslinger Engineering. They might have a used one. Also they sell brand new ones but they are smaller in diameter. The smaller dia. might cause the accessories, Alt. power steering, to not work properly until higher engine RPM's

I believe you are looking for the crankshaft pulley. I've attached the page from the 73-79 master parts book.
For a 1976 2.3L engine with air, I believe you are looking for D42E6312-BA, D42E6312-BC, D42E6312-BD, D42E6A312-CA, or D4FZ-6A312-D

Here is the exploded view. The part labeled 6A312 will be the crankshaft pulley.

As it turns out, the car in question is an early 1976 V6 car with power steering and A/C. It's not a 2300 at all.

When I decided to rebuild mine, I found a book written by Sven Pruett titled "How to build and modify Ford 60 degree V-6 engines" copy write 1994. In the book it states "Over the years, several different kinds of crank dampers have been used on the Ford V-6. Most of them were solid cast iron and did very little to dampen anything. For a brief period in the mid-1970s, some 2.8-liter engines were equipped with a true vibration damper. These units had an elastomeric ring just like those fitted to the small-block Ford engines. These dampers are fairly rare."
I had two engines to work from and truly don't remember what I put on the rebuilt one. But, I do have a balancer described above on my shelf.

The "solid" crank pulley (without the vibration damper) is listed as 11/76 and later for manual transmission cars. I have the part number as D7ZZ-6312-A. That would probably work just fine... if you can find one.
