Title: FUEL PUMPS??
Post by: Trucker Tim on June 04, 2015, 06:59:38 AM
Hey Crew.
Long time no see. What are your thoughts about the preferences between a mechanical fuel pump vs. an electric one?

Mechanical pumps for the 2.3 are inexpensive, usually pretty reliable, and will stop pumping if the engine dies. The plus side to an electric pump is you can instantly prime an engine that's been sitting awhile...less cranking. My $0.02

Can't beat a good mechanical for reliability and safety IMO, electrical is good for priming though but I just use a squirt bottle.. Guess I'm just paranoid after an electrical left me stranded in the middle of nowhere, lol..

Running a Mr,Gasket electric in my build, located 1 foot from the tank with no probs. 2.8 engine.  However, i did wire in a inertia switch into the wiring loop. Took it from a ford ranger that i had parted out, plus i wired in a kill switch under the dash for second measure.   so far all is working good.

cheers

Good new, not rebuilt mechanical pump can't be beat. I try to find older NOS ones on ebay to avoid Chinese junk at Autozone. If you travel it's a good idea to have an electric with a few feet of hose & some wire in the toolbox to get you going if the pump ever quits.

the only reason to run an electric for anything near stock is because you cant run a manual .. my V6 in my pinto can not run a manual .. i`ve had an electric since the day i built it 11 years ago .. not a moments problem ...

I want to thank all of you for your input!
Going to check and see if I have room in the Willys engine compartment for the mechanical pump. Might try and followup with a few pictures. I am told the pump from a Ranger might fit if I have a tight fit with the front drive shaft. Going to measure tomorrow am.

Yep, glad to hear problem solved. Learned something new too. In 30+ years of pintoing I had never seen a ranger style fuel pump. Putting that in the memory bank!
