Fuel Pump??
« on: September 02, 2017, 02:10:08 AM »
I just picked up a 72 pinto 2.0 4 speed, I got it running today for like 2 mins, then it wouldn't start, gas gauge was on empty. so I added 2 gals, then it wouldn't start, I look into the carb and it has a lot of gas build up inside. FUEL PUMP??  ???

NEED HELP, Stressed out on this project., lol

I am not familiar with the term "a lot of gas build up inside".  Looking into carb throat and operating the throttle linkage, you should see the momentary gas stream from the carb accelerator pump.  If so, gas is getting to the carb and the fuel pump is probably okay.  With your symptoms of running for a couple minutes then dying (if no gas in the carb), I would first suspect a clogged filter either the one by the carb or the sock in the tank.  But before doing a lot of work, the culprit(s) needs to be determined.  Disconnect the gas hose from the carb and put the free end into a catch can and crank the engine some to see if gas enters the can.  If no gas and there is a in line filter, pull hose from filter inlet, put it in the catch can and repeat cranking test.  If still no gas, pull the hose from the fuel pump inlet, put it in the catch can, and pressurize the gas tank (I blow into the gas tank filler to avoid over pressurizing it).  If you got gas at this step, it is likely the fuel pump.  If not, keeping moving back to towards the tank to find the obstruction.  Do not forget the vent system, crimped lines, crud in the carb, etc..  When working with the fuel system, keep a fire extinguisher handy to avoid further stress.

"I look into the carb and it has a lot of gas build up inside."

If I'm interrupting this correctly you see gas in the carburetor throat. If that is correct you might just have the opposite of what oldkayaker is assuming. The float needle and seat may have debris preventing the control of the gas into the float bowl (or the float has a hole and is sinking). Essentially the carburetor is flooding. My guess is it is one or the other.

If you pass the test he told you to do then assume a carburetor rebuild (or at least a cleaning) is necessary.  Also replace the fuel filter because this car probably sat a long time and who knows what is in the tank or the lines.

It was like a shot glass full of gas was build up in there. I then turned the gas throttle flap by had and then of course it drank it down like hitting a shot glass, LOL. I'll fiddle with it and report back, A carb at my parts stores is like $240, OUCH!!!

If you had the 1600 engine there are kits on Ebay for about $12. The 2.0 kit is $52. IF..., you can get the top off the carb without damaging the gasket you might find there is just debris in the needle and seat. Or, you will find that the float is sunk indicating it has a hole.  If it isn't too bad (and assuming it is brass) they can be soldered up.

For sure you don't have a fuel delivery problem, you have a fuel control problem.
