Title: Fragged!
Post by: entropy on July 31, 2016, 05:33:23 AM
So, I was doing some tuning on the V8 car a couple weekends ago.  The good news is, it made a whole lotta' buncha' more power.  The bad news is that during a...let's go with "street test"...after spinning through first and second, it used that power to frag something in the drivetrain during the 2-3 shift. "Why yes, AAA I'm going to need a flatbed tow in this empty industrial park.  Racing?!  Oh, heavens no!  That would be illegal and, after all, it's only a Pinto..."  So the engine and trans is coming out tomorrow.  My guess is something in the clutch came apart energetically (but not so much that it went through the bellhousing)....or I broke the input shaft off the trans.  I think it's likely the former.  The sound's coming from the bellhousing area and it sounds a lot like somebody put half a ton of scrap in a cement mixer.  Oh well....breaki ng things means an opportunity to bombproof it for the future, right?   :'(

Got the engine and trans out on Sunday.  The clutch is absolutely fine.  The trans...not so much.  I haven't cracked it open but it is *definitely* broken up pretty good in there. I knew it would break eventually...I mean, even though it's a light car, I'm still making about 100 lb/ft of torque more than it was rated for. Add drag radials and set the countdown timer.  So, now the question is what do I do about it?  The obvious and expensive answer is a gforce built T5.  Probably a faceplated one.  The other expensive answer is a TKO-500, but I can't imagine that's going to fit without cutting out the tunnel...which I really don't want to do. Anybody done one before?  Thoughts?  Suggestions?  Anybody got a burly, built T5 laying about?

You being in CA - should be lots of places that can build a bomb proof T-5 ?

C4 or Torqueflite.

C4 or Torqueflite.

thought about it, but I like having a clutch car and that overdrive is important when you've got a 4.11 gearset.

Yeah...I should be getting a quote tomorrow on a gforce rebuild.  Still trying to decide if I want to go dog box or stick with synchros.

......Aaaaaaaa and now I'm screwed.  The broken trans didn't have the aluminum tag with the serial number, so I had to do a bit of internet digging to find out what year Mustang the thing came out of.  Wow.  Not good.  1983.  That's right....guy who did the swap put an early  non-WC T5 transmission behind a small block that dynoed 350 lb/ft at the wheels. That's somewhere north of 400 at the flywheel. Being run through a transmission rated to somewhere around 265 lb/ft.  I'm surprised it lasted *this* long.  Seriously.

However, this also means that my trans is an even *more* useless paperweight, since I can't use this case to build anything worthwhile.  So....anybody in CA. got a 1985 or later T5 they want to sell? Broken is fine, since it's going to get turned into a Gforce Street t5

Now you got me wondering what T-5 I have in the shop...... do not recall a tag on it.
Big job to get at..... 3-4 engines/blocks to move & a truck load of other stuff !

Probably worth looking at, 'cause it it's one like mine, it simply will not do behind a V8 or turbo 4

It's easy to tell apart WC and non-WC T5s without a tag. The bearing cup on the input shaft side gives it away. I was going to suggest a toploader until you said it needed OD.  ;)

There's also Astro T5 transmissions.

Thought I had pictures of my T-5 - couldn't find them.
I do (sort of) posting about it before.....can not find the topic though.
Fairly sure it was determined to be a WC T-5 for a V8.

Will look into it......

Update: I've picked up a G-Force T5 and a McLeod Street Pro clutch.  I need to have the flywheel resurfaced (or possibly replace it with a new SFI rated one....still deciding), and soon my little monster will be back on the street doling out the harshness to cars that cost 10x more.

I would go with a new SFI rated flywheel for sure.
Are you running a safety bellhousing? Sounds like you should be.

I'm looking at the QuickTime ones.  Any experience with those or any others?

Quicktime on my B2.
Get in touch with them & tell your combo (motor/trans) to get the right one.

Quick update:  Engine and trans are still out of the car pending a weekend that isn't raining or threatening to rain.  I used some of the downtime to autopsy the T5 that broke.  Great googly moogly....I assumed that I had broken 3rd, since it broke during the 2-3 shift but noooooope!  Turns out I broke every tooth off of the main input shaft gear and turned the countershaft gear into more of a countershaft.. ..disk.  Oh, well.....the G-Force should hold up a bit better.

Well it kind of wound up being like a friend of mine called me and asked how can you tell if you over speed a engine , my reply was does it fit lossy in a five gallon bucket, guess yours fits that description well   :o

Boom!  Today, and for the first time since July 2016, the car went down the street under its own power.  Got a bit of tweaking to do on it and then all the cosmetic stuff goes back on.  After that, it's back to doling out the harshness on the streets....unt il the next thing breaks.  ;-)

Update:  Got tired of trying and failing to get that Holley Double Pumper to work right on the street.  Off it comes, and on goes a QuickFuel Brawler series with vacuum secondaries.  Feeling good about this one....

Racing as on a trailer going to a drag strip. That's racing.
