Title: Finally Get To Work On It!
Post by: 74 PintoWagon on May 14, 2014, 10:11:53 PM
Well, got the shop done enough to where I can get some work done so I figure I may as well put the new valve seals in, and right off the bat I had to make a tool, LOL..

Was kinda worried what I'd find when I popped the cover, couldn't believe what I saw, this thing is clean as a whistle like a brand new motor it's suppose to have 65,000mi on it and it sat for 15yrs.

This is the very first time I've worked on one of these things and I gotta say they are pretty darn simple to work on, this has to be the quickest I've ever changed valve seals, LOL, including making the tool I got less than an hour in it and I didn't even rush,LOL.

Tomorrow I think I'll pull the distributor and change the curve in it..

Well, finally got the distributor functioning the way I want it(sure wish I had a distributor machine)after about 8 times in and out of the car and almost took the BFH to the alternator.Got ta love remans, lol, it had real stiff springs and the tangs were bent so far out it was a wonder I had any advance at all, so I found some kind of light springs in the pile that works and bent the tangs so there's just enough tension on the springs to keep the timing steady at idle. The slots are 16R and 21R and couldn't find them in any charts so I had to switch them and run it to find out how many degrees each slot had, the narrow slot had 18*(18* inial 36* total)while the long slot had 30*(6* initial and 36* total), milled the narrow slot a few thousands and got it on the third shot, now the slot has 22* which gives me 14* initial and 36* total, checked the vacumm and is has 20* in the can. It now runs smoother peppier than it ever did and I was able to lean out the mixture screw about a 1/4 turn on the idle, now for a milage test I'll be doing that this next week..

Next project will be to move that dam alternator to passenger side..

If it sat for 15 years, it would benefit you GREATLY to replace the valve springs, too. 15 years is a LONG time for some of those springs to be compressed. A new set will make a big difference in how it runs.

What car is this one? Are you doing the Pinto?

Do you need to do a whole valve job?

Hydraulic lifters bleed down when they sit long term. I have 2 assembled heads off turbo cars that all the valves are closed because they have been sitting for years.

I checked them as I took them off and they're all good, besides with the wife driving probably never see 3000R's, lol..

You know I had forgotten that those followers bleed down that much. I remember now.....they'll compress like 1/2" or something crazy like that. Talk about lifter preload. lol

All of my Ford tech sheets state that the lifter should be placed in the soft jaws of your vice and bleed down completely, then reinstalled in the head one at a time to check the clearance at the rocker arms. That clearance should be .035 to .045 max. If more than that, shims should be placed under the lifter to get the proper clearance. I have seen them almost  twice the allowable clearance. And each lifter will be different. This is an easy check. Just like setting the clearance on a solid lifter cam.

My Ford manual says to use that tool and compress them all the way down and then check with a feeler gauge.

I never noticed the bleed down until a couple years ago when I started digging up turbo parts. This head is about to go on my new wagon engine & sat on a shelf for at least 3 years. One intake valve is barely open at this point.

I'm glad you finally got your shop together, and you get some quality underhood time. :)

Thanks man, yeah it is nice to have a bench to work on, lol, at least I got the clean area done and machines hooked up and I'll be able to make a buck or two now and then, in fact I got two trannys to do in the next week or so, general work area still needs to be wired up and lights put in but I can do that as I go along.

Okkkk, we did a mileage test last week, wife drives 75mi a week going back and forth to work(that's straight to work and straight home)and it would take 4gals, last week she did the exact same thing straight to work and straight home, this time it only took 3 1/2 gals, also it would take exactly 1qrt of oil now it is still on the full mark, so far I'm happy with it.... Next step will be the induction, now if I could just find the right size carb, in the meantime I guess I could start modifying the intake.
