moving back bumper

I moved my front bumpers so they don't stick out. Look in general pinto talk "stupid bumper fix" to see. Now I want to move the back. I seems that I could un bolt the mount drill 2 holes and bolt it back. bumpers fixed. In the photo you can see a a 1/16 inch thick metal strap welded in the way. It is the piece with the 3 holes in it big hole in center. 2 small holes at sides. I would need to cut this out of the way. It is so thin I can not figure it is a support of any kind. The hole in the center takes out the strength. Can anyone tell me the reason it is there. Is it there on the early years before the big bumpers? Any help would be appreciated.

It wouldn't cause any problems if you removed it. Any support will be gained again by bolting the bumper bracket back on.

I moved my rear bumper in but that was on my wagon which was a little easier than what I'm looking at with your car. Good luck on the mod.

Hi great idea and it works great, it's not as simple as it looks , but the end more than makes up for the irritation .
 first off if you just shift to the first set of holes you only gain about an inch so i opted to shift to the last set of holes .
the ones that remain after you remove the web. to do that on my 77 hatchback i had to cut the first set away with a 4 inch grinder , then moved the bumper mount back and re installed the spring shackle mount. reatached the rear shocks and found that the upper bumper bolts were unreachable. so back to the old drawing board this time i bolted the upper bolts to the mounts and reinstalled .
 now it looks great with about 1 inch clearance all around and i don't need the rubber filler panel at all.

did you mount the shackle in the same place? did you move that forward too? Did you see my post on moving the front bumper? It is called "stupid bumper fix" in the general talk forum.

yes i did had already done mine in front it was the back that had me tree ed. pot the shackles in the same place.
