Adding Gear Oil to Rear Differential
« on: February 15, 2012, 03:03:48 PM »
72 Pinto Station Wagon - I removed rear differential cover, drained gear oil, put on new gasket, replaced cover.  I cannot find any way to replace the gear oil.  There is a "breather" hose on the top center of the differential with a small rubber 10" long hose that goes up into a crossmember.  I tried to add oil thru this hose, no good.  Then removed the fitting for this "breather" on the top of the differential housing and my next effore will be to attempt to dribble a quart or so of gear oil thru this tiny fitting hole.  I have to believe that this is wrong.  I cannot find any other fittings on the rear end/differential housing anywhere to add oil.  Just this little fitting with a hose that goes off the top center of the housing.  If they are there I must have missed them.  I may go crazy here.  Help.  Thanks jt

When looking at the differential from the drive shaft side, there is a fill "bolt" to the right side, right above the half way casting line, kind of in a "corner".

To remove it you need a 3/8" extension (a three inch works great) on a 3/8" ratchet handle. To put it back on just put the fill cap/bolt on the end of the extension and screw it back in.

When filling, put a pan under the fill hole and pump fluid in until it starts to pour/drip out of the hole/differential.

Its there..  I just did this myself.  Looking at the butt-end of the car.  And crawling under the car from the rear you will find it on the LEFT hand side.  It sometimes get filled with dirt and can be difficult to spot..  A good flashlight and an inspection mirror helped me locate it..

I found it thanks to the advice.  It was totally covered with crud etc.  What a hassle.  Thanks very much.  jt
