Title: Addco front sway bar help
Post by: Bobcat Racer on April 10, 2012, 02:00:52 PM
I'm installing an Addco sway bar on my car and I don't have the directions.  The website states it is a direct bolt in swap but I don't think I can use the stock end links.  Anyone have any insight?  One goal I have is that I can switch it back to stock if needed.

Did the Addco come with any long bolts, spacers, urethane/rubber donuts, cup washers and two short pieces of angle iron (one hole would be about 1/2 inch and the other about a full inch on each one)?

If so, then that's what they want you to use.  The angle iron will mount to your lower control arm using the lower shock mount bolt, and you'll use the long bolts, spacers, donuts, cup washers, etc for the end links.  The saddles and saddle cushions should go in the same place as the original ones.

I just googled the Addco sway bars and came up with generic instructions at this site: http://www.addco.net/ (http://www.addco.net/)

I also have printed instructions/drawings for installation, but I don't think they're any more specific than what you'll find on the Addco website.

I hope this helps.

I bought an Addco 1" bar and the bracket they wanted fastened to the front control arm stuck out so far the outer tie rods would hit them. Maybe I had the wrong linkage kit in the box, but I opted for a later model Bobcat 15/16" sway bar which is a direct bolt on, and all of the bushings are still available at RockAuto.com

I have the instructions from the 70's vintage Addco sway bars, front and rear.  If the present Addco design is the same, they may help.  The scanned 6 pages gives a 420kb pdf document.  If interested, pm me your email address and will email the file to you.  Not sure if this will work but attached a 90kb jpeg image of the front instructions (the pdf is more clear).

Yep, those are the instructions I have and that little L bracket
you attatch to the lower arm, was interfering with steering linkage.
The Addco bar is a little shorter than the stock one to accommodate
the bushings being farther forward, so you can't use the factoty bushing
setup without moving the frame brackets back, which would require moving the fuel and return lines.. The frame brackets that came
with the kit wouldn't work either. It's either a real poor design, or mine came with all the wrong hardware.

Installed on my 71 with out a problem (that I can recall).  Maybe there are differences between the early and late model installations (assuming you got the right parts)?  I could not find my little L brackets to measure for you to compare.
