Title: 73 RUNABOUT RESTORATION ON HOLD FOR WANT OF FUEL TANK SENDER!
Post by: Henrius on October 04, 2018, 08:19:12 PM
I asked in two other threads and have gotten no response. Surely mine is not the only Pinto Runabout with a rusted-to-pieces fuel sending unit!

There is one for a Pinto Wagon on E-Bay, but it is different. Where can I buy a sender unit for this car, OR EVEN HAVE ONE MADE TO SPEC?  Nobody seems to know anything. Could I modify one from another model of Ford? I have no idea what resistance the unit is supposed to be.

ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED! I can't get the fuel system back together until I find a way around this impasse!

I found this unit a few years ago and bought it. It looks the same and is 95% the same side by side. I got too sick to finish the project. Someone else in the club bought it upon my recommendation . The member reported back that it works just the opposite as expected. It works but E=full and F=empty. This will make you functional as long as you don't forget how it reads. Perhaps it can be rewired. This address seems long to me but it works. If the link doesn't work, just look for pinto gas  tank  on amazon.
Good luck

Make a habit of filling it at the half-tank point and you never have to worry about it! :)

"The member reported back that it works just the opposite as expected. It works but E=full and F=empty."

Go to a hobby store and buy a packet of paste on letters or decals. Flip/Flop the "E" and the "F" on the gage and if anyone questions it tell them they must be dyslexic.

Years ago I had a Mazda that had the gas gage in the lower left corner of the cluster.  Therefore the needle swung upward and to the left for Full and downward to the right for Empty.  Basically reverse of most cars. There was a time I was driving my friends Jeep and knowing we had a long way to go I simply looked at the position of the needle. It was to the right (full) which in my car was empty.  When I mentioned we were almost out of fuel he looked at me like I was crazy... and to some extent I was beginning to think I was "losing it."  Then it dawned on me how my Mazda gage worked, I explained that to him and we both had a chuckle.

I am using a 71-73 mustang sending unit in a 72 pinto tank. This piece is readily available on line and just needed a little mod to the locating tabs to fit.
