Title: 2.3 NA to 2.5 Turbo (DIS engine) - Crankshafts
Post by: pintoguy76 on June 03, 2014, 02:27:20 AM
Thinking about starting some work on my pinto. Id like to turbo the DIS 2.3 I have in it now, but thinking of using a 2.5 crank and a 5.7" rod/piston/ring kit from esslinger. Will the 2.5 crank take the power like a 2.3 crank will? I noticed esslinger doesnt sell either crank, so Im assuming they both will hold up just fine? Let me know if I'm wrong....

I wouldnt recommend a 5.7 rod kit for a turbo engine. You end up with a very short piston with a minimal top ring to top of piston measurement. The short pistons tend to rock and thus have short lifespans, even more so in a turbo app.

Check with turboford.org for more info it has been done and safely but you need more facts before you spend some money...

Id just use a stock 2.5 crank cause your never gunna put out enough power to destroy it. As for the 5.7 rods they can be done that way but personally I wouldn't go that route. You can make same power with shorter rods and not have the issues that some 5.7 rod combos have.

X2 72pair. Longer rod is a NA thing, to allow more burn time with slower burn rate, turbo speeds that up greatly and no need to go long rod. Go for the durability especially if already going to the longer stroke crank.

you can do the 2.5 crank a couple different ways... one guy has very successfully use a 2.5 crank, 2.3 off the shelf aftermarket rods and custom pistons... others have used 2.5 crank 5.4 aftermarket rods and pistons.... both work well....

Whats the best piston/rod combo for a 2.5? I think I found some 5.2" rods and 2500cc pistons at one place. But that's it. Just one place. So I am assuming that combo isn't too popular. So is the stock rod the best way to go? And what is the size of a stock rod for a 2.5?

2.5 has 5.4 rods... crower sells em and diamond sells pistons for em..

put the turbo on it & run it.

see what breaks and take notes.

fix what breaks.

that's how we all learned. sometimes you just have to be a pioneer.
