Title: 1973 Wagon Project
Post by: PonyRider62 on August 17, 2019, 10:58:11 AM
 :) Hi Everyone!
Got This Car For Christmas! 2.0 With Headers, 4 Speed Manuel, Runs Pretty Well.
Would Love To Install A 5 Speed Trans.
Yeah She Needs A Lot Of Work!
Interior Is Restored Already, But Exterior Needs A Lot!
Guy Who Had It Lowered It Too Much, And Lost All Kinds Of Original Parts,
Met A Guy Near Me And Got A Lot Of Parts, But Still Need Stuff!
Interior Passenger Door Handle, Hood? Drivers Side Fender?
Front And Rear Bumpers?
Will Up Date As I Get Stuff Done!
Thanks!

Finally Got The Grill Done.
Not Sure If I'll Add The Pinto Emblem To It?
Thoughts?

The grill looks great!  As to adding the emblem, I guess it all depends on what you're going for here... if you want a stock appearance, then no.  No Pinto ever had an emblem on the grill.  If you're more into custom modifications, then do as you please; it's your car and you have every right in the world to do whatever you like with it.

Well Tried To Replace The Front Coils, But This Poor Car Has The Original Ball Joints!
Hard To Find And Pricey! Have To Modify The Lowers ( When They Get Here)
And Remove Rivets! (How Fun)
Hopefully I Can Do This Next Week, Have To Get It Off The Ground!

You can either use a grinder or a drill to get rid of the rivets.
Or, since you aren't keeping it bone stock you can get tubular control arms front Speedway. Either just the lowers or all four. They have screw in ball joints.

Got Lower Ball Joints For A 74 Cause I Heard They Could Be Made To Fit,
But I Got Lucky! I Think The Front Was Replaced With A 74 Or Newer As They Look Just Like The Ones I Bought.
My Friend Is A Professional Mechanic And Will Be Helping Me.
Probably Use A Air Chisel And Drill To Remove  The Rivets.

Lowering by torch wasn't really that uncommon back in the day.
Is it the best way, nope. but it was done a lot. The "look" was number one. Guys drove cars that barely handled on the street but looked super cool.

If you need parts let me know. I have a friend who might have what you need or can point you in the right direction.
Have fun.

Trying To Decide To Either Build Up The 2.0 Or Go With A 2.8 V6
Need A 73 Back Hatch, And A Windshield.
Title: Re: 1973 Wagon Project
Post by: 71pintoracer on March 27, 2020, 09:26:49 AM
l vote 2.0. With a little tuning they are great engines and respond well to slight mods. The 2.8 had a noisy valvetrain, prone to overheating and cracking heads. As far as power to weight ratio they were turds.

Looking Into Performance Crank And Cam Shafts And Oversized Pistons.

The 2.8 engine was not a bad engine , (if you keep the valves adjusted it was quite) have one in mne , redone mine years ago with a 2.9 crank and TBI fuel injection , if I had to do it all over again I would have used the 2.9 or even the 4.0 , but I wanted to keep it stock looking and keep the power stearing and must have aircond , still happy with it even though every 15K I have to adjust the valves ,  I still have a V-6 pinto cruse wagon that I am still trying to figure out what to stuff in it , got a 4.0 which I did a fitment and would work with no body cutting ,only they have not made that engine in almost twenty years , along with the 2.3 . 2.0 , 2.9 and over 25 for the 2.8 , next one I am going to see if it will fit is the 3.7 V-6 out of a 2015 mustang  , it was 300 HP and gave 30MPG in the car , fount they make a belhousing to fit the C4 trans to it , looking to that one , last if I could find a wrecked P100D Tesla and swap the drivetrain I would have a high 9 second 4WD Pinto Wagon with fake tailpipes sticking out the back to confuse everyone , but I only have one thing to say , please do not cut on the car and waste it ,seen many that were and later forgotten , hope this give you some ideas , good luck in your engine choice

When my Turbo Coupe went to the scrapper it looked like this (below). The 8.8 was removed and the 6.75 Pinto rear was quickly welded into place. The interior was completely gutted. Just a piece of pipe to the rack (one of the few parts concessions I made) for steering. The wheels were the spare and three 13" Pinto wheels. Otherwise this car was gutted of EVERYTHING. Made about $250 selling parts too.

I stripped mine to the bare metal because I had a lot of pock mark rust spots. I applied about 3-4 coats of Phosphoric Acid as well. I then used a 2K epoxy primer (PCL) and assumed that would hold it for the winter. The car is not garaged but it does have a cover so it doesn't get direct rain. Anyway, it still has a bunch of rust spots showing. So, as a warning don't let your hard work amount to nothing like mine did.

Nice looking wagon! I like those pop-out windows! Just a little FYI, not sure what kind of primer you're using but the primer that just uses reducer is porous and will cause surface rust to form after a period of time. The kind that uses activator is more of a primer/sealer and is more durable. If you're using that kind make sure to clean your gun right away!

The wheels look very nice!  15"?

I briefly had 225-60-16" and wheels from my '88 Turbo Coupe (Fox body) on my wagon. On the back I has to space the wheels out about 1/4" to clear the leaf springs. In corners there was minor rubbing on the inner wheel well. Up front there were minor clearance problems with the wheel openings primarily at the front edge if I recall correctly.

I realize you are in California, but I wanted to point out that there is a 1976 Pinto Wagon being auctioned until 12/30 in Colorado, but it has not received any bids as of yet. The minimal bid is 25 bucks. It has a lot of parts that you are seeking. I cut and pasted the link https://sca.auction/en/29105635-1976-ford-pinto

Hope that helps with your parts search...

I am the last person to criticize another person's project...howe ver, before you do a 4x4 Pinto, google it and you will find bazillions Pintos having been converted in such a manner. In other words, it will not be as unique as you think. What's more unique is keeping it stock or even resto-modded! You will be amazed how many people will come forward to see your Pinto!

Your 1973 seems decent, and not knowing what the overall condition it is in, I'd hazard a guess that it is easily restorable (easily is relative speaking ...chuckling)

Godspeed in your project! Hope to see you at the Stampede!

Happy Motoring!

It's Rustoleum " Galaxy Blue "
color shift.
It changes from blue to purple and other colors depending
on the light source.
Planning on doing the whole car with it.
